Abelian surfaces in Hesse form and explicit isogeny formulas

We develop a new method for the computation of $(3,3)$-isogenies between principally polarized abelian surfaces. The idea is to work with models in $\mathbb{P}^8$ induced by a symmetric level-$3$ theta structure. In this setting, the action of three-torsion points is linear, and the isogeny formulas can be described in a simple way as the composition of easy-to-evaluate maps. In the description of these formulas, the relation with the Burkhardt quartic threefold plays an important role. Furthermore, we discuss generalizations of the idea to higher dimensions as well as different isogeny degrees.

Integral differential forms for superelliptic curves

Given a superelliptic curve $Y_K : y^n = f(x)$ over a local field $K$, we describe the theoretical background and an implementation of a new algorithm for computing the $\mathcal{O}_K$-lattice of integral differential forms on $Y_K$. We build on the results of Obus and the second author, which describe arbitrary regular models of the projective line using only valuations. One novelty of our approach is that we construct an $\mathcal{O}_K$-model of $Y_K$ with only rational singularities, but which may not be regular.

Computing modular polynomials by deformation

We present an unconditional CRT algorithm to compute the modular polynomial $Φ_\ell(X,Y)$ in quasi-linear time. The main ingredients of our algorithm are: the embedding of $\ell$-isogenies in smooth-degree isogenies in higher dimension, and the computation of $m$-th order deformations of isogenies. We provide a proof-of-concept implementation of a heuristic version of the algorithm demonstrating the practicality of our approach. Our algorithm can also be used to compute the reduction of $Φ_{\ell}$ modulo $p$ in quasi-linear time (with respect to $\ell$) $\tilde{O}(\ell^2(\log p + \log \ell)^{\mathfrak{O}})$.

Reduction type of genus-3 curves in a special stratum of their moduli space

We study a 3-dimensional stratum $\mathcal{M}_{3,V}$ of the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_3$ of curves of genus $3$ parameterizing curves $Y$ that admit a certain action of $V= C_2\times C_2$. We determine the possible types of the stable reduction of these curves to characteristic different from $2$. We define invariants for $\mathcal{M}_{3,V}$ and characterize the occurrence of each of the reduction types in terms of them. We also calculate the $j$-invariant (resp. the Igusa invariants) of the irreducible components of positive genus of the stable reduction of $Y$ in terms of the invariants.

Failing to hash into supersingular isogeny graphs

An important open problem in supersingular isogeny-based cryptography is to produce, without a trusted authority, concrete examples of "hard supersingular curves" that is, equations for supersingular curves for which computing the endomorphism ring is as difficult as it is for random supersingular curves. A related open problem is to produce a hash function to the vertices of the supersingular $\ell$-isogeny graph which does not reveal the endomorphism ring, or a path to a curve of known endomorphism ring. Such a hash function would open up interesting cryptographic applications. In this paper, we document a number of (thus far) failed attempts to solve this problem, in the hope that we may spur further research, and shed light on the challenges and obstacles to this endeavour. The mathematical approaches contained in this article include: (i) iterative root-finding for the supersingular polynomial; (ii) gcd's of specialized modular polynomials; (iii) using division polynomials to create small systems of equations; (iv) taking random walks in the isogeny graph of abelian surfaces; and (v) using quantum random walks.

A user's guide to the local arithmetic of hyperelliptic curves

A new approach has been recently developed to study the arithmetic of hyperelliptic curves $y^2=f(x)$ over local fields of odd residue characteristic via combinatorial data associated to the roots of $f$. Since its introduction, numerous papers have used this machinery of "cluster pictures" to compute a plethora of arithmetic invariants associated to these curves. The purpose of this user's guide is to summarise and centralise all of these results in a self-contained fashion, complemented by an abundance of examples.

Differential Forms on Hyperelliptic Curves with Semistable Reduction

Let $C$ be a hyperelliptic curve over a local field $K$ with odd residue characteristic, defined by some affine Weierstrass equation $y^2=f(x)$. We assume that $C$ has semistable reduction and denote by $\mathcal{X} \rightarrow \textrm{Spec}\, \mathcal{O}_K$ its minimal regular model with relative dualizing sheaf $ω_{\mathcal{X}/ \mathcal{O}_K}$. We show how to directly read off a basis for $H^0(\mathcal{X},ω_{\mathcal{X}/\mathcal{O}_K})$ from the cluster picture of the roots of $f$. Furthermore we give a formula for the valuation of $λ$ such that $λ\cdot \frac{dx}{y} \land \dots \land x^{g-1}\frac{dx}{y}$ is a generator for $\det H^0(\mathcal{X},ω_{\mathcal{X}/\mathcal{O}_K})$.
