From Abelianization to Tangent Categories

A tangent category is a category with an endofunctor, called the tangent bundle functor, which is equipped with various natural transformations that capture essential properties of the classical tangent bundle of smooth manifolds. In this paper, we show that, surprisingly, the category of groups is a tangent category whose tangent bundle functor is induced by abelianization and whose differential bundles correspond to abelian groups. We generalize this construction by introducing the concept of linear assignments, which are endofunctors assigning to every object a commutative monoid in a natural and idempotent manner. We then show that a linear assignment induces a tangent bundle functor, whose differential bundles correspond to a notion of linear algebras. We show that any finitely cocomplete regular unital category is a tangent category whose tangent bundle functor is induced by the canonical abelianization functor, which is a monadic linear assignment. This allows us to provide multiple new examples of tangent categories including monoids, pointed magmas, loops, non-unital rings, Jónsson--Tarski varieties, and pointed Mal'tsev varieties.

Tangent structures for divided power algebras

We build a tangent structure on the category of divided power algebras using a particular notion of semidirect product. We show that this tangent structure admits an adjoint tangent structure, which involves a version of Kähler differentials, and which is similar to the Zariski cotangent space for affine schemes. We study vector fields and differential bundles for these two structures, which correspond respectively to a notion of special derivation, and to the category of modules over the underlying commutative algebra of a given divided power algebra.

Quillen (co)homology of divided power algebras over an operad

Barr--Beck cohomology, put into the framework of model categories by Quillen, provides a cohomology theory for any algebraic structure, for example André--Quillen cohomology of commutative rings. Quillen cohomology has been studied notably for divided power algebras and restricted Lie algebras, both of which are instances of divided power algebras over an operad $P$: the commutative and Lie operad respectively. In this paper, we investigate the Quillen cohomology of divided power algebras over an operad $P$, identifying Beck modules, derivations, and Kähler differentials in that setup. We also compare the cohomology of divided power algebras over $P$ with that of $P$-algebras, and work out some examples.

The Rosický Tangent Categories of Algebras over an Operad

Tangent categories provide a categorical axiomatization of the tangent bundle. There are many interesting examples and applications of tangent categories in a variety of areas such as differential geometry, algebraic geometry, algebra, and even computer science. The purpose of this paper is to expand the theory of tangent categories in a new direction: the theory of operads. The main result of this paper is that both the category of algebras of an operad and its opposite category are tangent categories. The tangent bundle for the category of algebras is given by the semi-direct product, while the tangent bundle for the opposite category of algebras is constructed using the module of Kähler differentials, and these tangent bundles are in fact adjoints of one another. To prove these results, we first prove that the category of algebras of a coCartesian differential monad is a tangent category. We then show that the monad associated to any operad is a coCartesian differential monad. This also implies that we can construct Cartesian differential categories from operads. Therefore, operads provide a bountiful source of examples of tangent categories and Cartesian differential categories, which both recaptures previously known examples and also yield new interesting examples. We also discuss how certain basic tangent category notions recapture well-known concepts in the theory of operads.

Cartesian Differential Comonads and New Models of Cartesian Differential Categories

Cartesian differential categories come equipped with a differential combinator that formalizes the derivative from multi-variable differential calculus, and also provide the categorical semantics of the differential $λ$-calculus. An important source of examples of Cartesian differential categories are the coKleisli categories of the comonads of differential categories, where the latter concept provides the categorical semantics of differential linear logic. In this paper, we generalize this construction by introducing Cartesian differential comonads, which are precisely the comonads whose coKleisli categories are Cartesian differential categories, and thus allows for a wider variety of examples of Cartesian differential categories. As such, we construct new examples of Cartesian differential categories from Cartesian differential comonads based on power series, divided power algebras, and Zinbiel algebras.

Unstable algebras over an operad II

We introduce a notion of unstable algebra over an operad in general characteristic. We show that the unstable algebra freely generated by an unstable module is itself a free algebra under suitable conditions. We introduce a family of '$q$-level' operads which allows us to identify unstable modules studied by Brown--Gitler, Miller and Carlsson to free unstable $q$-level algebras.

Divided power algebras and distributive laws

We study the divided power structures over a product of operads with distributive law. We give a systematic method to characterise the divided power algebras over such a product from the structures of divided power algebra coming from each of the the factor operads. We characterise divided power algebras with operadic derivation, as well as divided power $p$-level algebras in characteristic $p$, and divided power Poisson algebras in characteristic 3.

Unstable algebras over an operad

The aim of this article is to define and study a notion of unstable algebra over an operad that generalises the classical notion of unstable algebra over the Steenrod algebra. For this study we focus on the case of characteristic 2. We define $\star$-unstable $\mathcal P$-algebras, where $\mathcal P$ is an operad and $\star$ is a commutative binary operation in $\mathcal P$. We then build a functor that takes an unstable module $M$ to the free $\star$-unstable $\mathcal P$-algebra generated by $M$. Under some hypotheses on $\star$ and on $M$, we identify this unstable algebra as a free $\mathcal P$-algebra. Finally, we give some examples of this result, and we show how to use our main theorem to obtain a new construction of the unstable modules studied by Carlsson, Brown-Gitler, and Campbell-Selick, that takes into account their internal product.

Divided power algebras over an operad

The purpose of this paper is to give a characterisation of divided power algebras over a reduced operad. Such a characterisation is given in terms of polynomial operations, following the classical example of divided power algebras. We describe these polynomial operations in two different ways: one way uses invariant elements under the action of the symmetric group, the other coinvariant elements. Our results are then applied to the case of level algebras, which are (non-associative) commutative algebras satisfying the exchange law.
