RecipeNet: A Hierarchical Transformer for Recipe Data

Recipe data arises in domains such as materials synthesis, pharmaceutical formulation, and industrial manufacturing, where procedures are represented as ordered sequences of steps containing heterogeneous structured fields. Existing tabular learning methods typically flatten this structure into fixed-schema representations, limiting their ability to capture hierarchical field interactions and procedural dependencies. We propose RecipeNet, a hierarchical Transformer architecture that encodes field-level interactions within each step and sequential dependencies across steps through stacked Transformer encoders. Experiments on multiple recipe datasets and tasks demonstrate that RecipeNet consistently outperforms existing tabular models, highlighting the value of hierarchical and sequential modeling for recipe representation learning.

Label Smoothing++: Enhanced Label Regularization for Training Neural Networks

Training neural networks with one-hot target labels often results in overconfidence and overfitting. Label smoothing addresses this issue by perturbing the one-hot target labels by adding a uniform probability vector to create a regularized label. Although label smoothing improves the network's generalization ability, it assigns equal importance to all the non-target classes, which destroys the inter-class relationships. In this paper, we propose a novel label regularization training strategy called Label Smoothing++, which assigns non-zero probabilities to non-target classes and accounts for their inter-class relationships. Our approach uses a fixed label for the target class while enabling the network to learn the labels associated with non-target classes. Through extensive experiments on multiple datasets, we demonstrate how Label Smoothing++ mitigates overconfident predictions while promoting inter-class relationships and generalization capabilities.

Domain Adaptation Using Pseudo Labels

In the absence of labeled target data, unsupervised domain adaptation approaches seek to align the marginal distributions of the source and target domains in order to train a classifier for the target. Unsupervised domain alignment procedures are category-agnostic and end up misaligning the categories. We address this problem by deploying a pretrained network to determine accurate labels for the target domain using a multi-stage pseudo-label refinement procedure. The filters are based on the confidence, distance (conformity), and consistency of the pseudo labels. Our results on multiple datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our simple procedure in comparison with complex state-of-the-art techniques.

PatchRot: A Self-Supervised Technique for Training Vision Transformers

Vision transformers require a huge amount of labeled data to outperform convolutional neural networks. However, labeling a huge dataset is a very expensive process. Self-supervised learning techniques alleviate this problem by learning features similar to supervised learning in an unsupervised way. In this paper, we propose a self-supervised technique PatchRot that is crafted for vision transformers. PatchRot rotates images and image patches and trains the network to predict the rotation angles. The network learns to extract both global and local features from an image. Our extensive experiments on different datasets showcase PatchRot training learns rich features which outperform supervised learning and compared baseline.
