Robust synchrotron-based deep learning algorithm for intracochlear segmentation in clinical scans: development and international validation

Clinical imaging is routinely used for cochlear implant surgical planning yet lacks the resolution and contrast necessary to visualize the fine intracochlear structures critical for individualized intervention. To address this limitation, an ensemble deep learning model was developed to automatically segment cochlear micro-anatomy from standard clinical scans. The model was trained and validated using an independent internal dataset comprised of paired synchrotron and clinical scans of the same cochlea across various acquisition protocols. Performance was evaluated quantitatively on an unseen internal test dataset and a multi-institutional external test dataset. The deep learning model achieved accurate segmentation of intracochlear anatomy across all tested modalities, outperformed all previously published models, and demonstrated strong viability on the multi-institutional external dataset. Furthermore, anatomical measurements on the automatic segmentations closely matched those obtained from high-resolution ground truth segmentations, confirming reliable estimation of clinically relevant metrics. By bridging the gap between high-resolution imaging and routine clinical imaging, this work provides a practical solution for patient-specific cochlear implant surgical planning and postoperative assessment, advancing the goals of atraumatic insertions and more effective hearing restoration.

Unitarity in quantum cosmology: symmetries protected and violated

This work deals with the violation or retention of symmetries associated with the self-adjoint extension of the Hamiltonian for homogeneous but anisotropic Bianchi I cosmological model. This extension is required to make sure the quantum evolution is unitary. It is found that the scale invariance is lost, but the Noether symmetries are preserved.

Aspects of Quantum Cosmology

In this thesis, we try to resolve the alleged problem of non-unitarity for various anisotropic cosmological models. Using Wheeler-DeWitt formulation, we quantized the anisotropic models with variable spatial curvature, namely Bianchi II and Bianchi VI. We showed that Hamiltonian of respective models admits self-adjoint extension, thus unitary evolution. We further extended the unitary evolution for higher dimensional anisotropic cosmological models. We also showed that unitarity of the model preserves the Noether symmetry but loses the scale invariance. In later part of this thesis, we showed the equivalence of Jordan and Einstein frames at the quantum level for the flat FRW model. Obtained expressions for wave packet matched exactly in both the frames indicating the equivalence of frames. We also showed that equivalence holds true for various anisotropic quantum cosmological models, i.e., Bianchi I, V, X, LRS Bianchi-I and Kantowski-Sachs models.

Anisotropic n-dimensional quantum cosmological model with fluid

In the present work, we discuss the Wheeler-DeWitt quantization scheme for an n-dimensional anisotropic cosmological model with a perfect fluid in presence of a massless scalar field. We identify the time parameter using the generalization of Schutz formalism and find the wavepacket of the universe following standard Wheeler-DeWitt methodology of quantum cosmology. We also calculate the expectation values of scale factors and volume element. We show that quantized model escapes the singularity and supports bouncing universe solutions.

Direct Estimation of Regional Wall Thicknesses via Residual Recurrent Neural Network

Accurate estimation of regional wall thicknesses (RWT) of left ventricular (LV) myocardium from cardiac MR sequences is of significant importance for identification and diagnosis of cardiac disease. Existing RWT estimation still relies on segmentation of LV myocardium, which requires strong prior information and user interaction. No work has been devoted into direct estimation of RWT from cardiac MR images due to the diverse shapes and structures for various subjects and cardiac diseases, as well as the complex regional deformation of LV myocardium during the systole and diastole phases of the cardiac cycle. In this paper, we present a newly proposed Residual Recurrent Neural Network (ResRNN) that fully leverages the spatial and temporal dynamics of LV myocardium to achieve accurate frame-wise RWT estimation. Our ResRNN comprises two paths: 1) a feed forward convolution neural network (CNN) for effective and robust CNN embedding learning of various cardiac images and preliminary estimation of RWT from each frame itself independently, and 2) a recurrent neural network (RNN) for further improving the estimation by modeling spatial and temporal dynamics of LV myocardium. For the RNN path, we design for cardiac sequences a Circle-RNN to eliminate the effect of null hidden input for the first time-step. Our ResRNN is capable of obtaining accurate estimation of cardiac RWT with Mean Absolute Error of 1.44mm (less than 1-pixel error) when validated on cardiac MR sequences of 145 subjects, evidencing its great potential in clinical cardiac function assessment.

CHROTRAN: A mathematical and computational model for in situ heavy metal remediation in heterogeneous aquifers

Groundwater contamination by heavy metals is a critical environmental problem for which in situ remediation is frequently the only viable treatment option. For such interventions, a three-dimensional reactive transport model of relevant biogeochemical processes is invaluable. To this end, we developed a model, CHROTRAN, for in situ treatment, which includes full dynamics for five species: a heavy metal to be remediated, an electron donor, biomass, a nontoxic conservative bio-inhibitor, and a biocide. Direct abiotic reduction by donor-metal interaction as well as donor-driven biomass growth and bio-reduction are modeled, along with crucial processes such as donor sorption, bio-fouling and biomass death. Our software implementation handles heterogeneous flow fields, arbitrarily many chemical species and amendment injection points, and features full coupling between flow and reactive transport. We describe installation and usage and present two example simulations demonstrating its unique capabilities. One simulation suggests an unorthodox approach to remediation of Cr(VI) contamination.

Equivalence of Einstein and Jordan frames in quantized cosmological models

The present work shows that the mathematical equivalence of Jordan frame and its conformally transformed version, the Einstein frame, so far as Brans-Dicke theory is concerned, survives a quantization of cosmological models in the theory. We work with the Wheeler-deWitt quantization scheme and take up quite a few anisotropic cosmological models as examples. We effectively show that the transformation from Jordan to Einstein frame is a canonical one and hence two frames are equivalent description of same physical scenario.

Equivalence of Jordan and Einstein frames at the quantum level

It is shown that the Jordan frame and its conformally transformed version, the Einstein frame of nonminimally coupled theories of gravity, are actually equivalent at the quantum level. The example of the theory taken up is the Brans-Dicke theory, and the wave packet calculations are done for a homogeneous and isotropic cosmological model in the purest form of the theory, i.e., in the absence of any additional matter sector. The calculations are clean and exact, and the result obtained are unambiguous.

Unitary evolution for anisotropic quantum cosmologies: models with variable spatial curvature

Contrary to the general belief, there has recently been quite a few examples of unitary evolution of quantum cosmological models. The present work gives more examples, namely Bianchi type VI and type II. These examples are important as they involve varying spatial curvature unlike the most talked about homogeneous but anisotropic cosmological models like Bianchi I, V and IX. We exhibit either explicit example of the unitary solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation, or at least show that a self-adjoint extension is possible.
