On subgroups of Brin-Thompson groups $nV$

We prove that the Brin-Thompson group $nV$ is torsion locally finite for $ n \geq 1$ which is known only when $n = 1$, and $nV$ contains continuum many copies of the additive group of the rationals $\mathbb{Q}$ for $n \geq 2$ which is known to be false for the $n = 1$ case.

Normalized Entropy versus Volume

Thanks to a recent result by Jean-Marc Schlenker, we establish an explicit linear inequality between the normalized entropies of pseudo-Anosov automorphisms and the hyperbolic volumes of their mapping tori. As its corollaries, we give an improved lower bound for values of entropies of pseudo-Anosovs on a surface with fixed topology, and a proof of a slightly weaker version of the result by Farb, Leininger and Margalit first, and by Agol later, on finiteness of cusped manifolds generating surface automorphisms with small normalized entropies. Also, we present an analogous linear inequality between the Weil-Petersson translation distance of a pseudo-Anosov map (normalized by multiplying the square root of the area of a surface) and the volume of its mapping torus, which leads to a better bound.

Minimal dilatations of pseudo-Anosovs generated by the magic 3-manifold and their asymptotic behavior

This paper concerns the set $\hat{\mathcal{M}}$ of pseudo-Anosovs which occur as monodromies of fibrations on manifolds obtained from the magic 3-manifold $N$ by Dehn filling three cusps with a mild restriction. We prove that for each $g$ (resp. $g \not\equiv 0 \pmod{6}$), the minimum among dilatations of elements (resp. elements with orientable invariant foliations) of $\hat{\mathcal{M}}$ defined on a closed surface $\varSigma_g$ of genus $g$ is achieved by the monodromy of some $\varSigma_g$-bundle over the circle obtained from $N(\tfrac{3}{-2})$ or $N(\tfrac{1}{-2})$ by Dehn filling two cusps. These minimizers are the same ones identified by Hironaka, Aaber-Dunfiled, Kin-Takasawa independently. In the case $g \equiv 6 \pmod{12}$ we find a new family of pseudo-Anosovs defined on $\varSigma_g$ with orientable invariant foliations obtained from N(-6) or N(4) by Dehn filling two cusps. We prove that if $δ_g^+$ is the minimal dilatation of pseudo-Anosovs with orientable invariant foliations defined on $\varSigma_g$, then $$ \limsup_{\substack{g \equiv 6 \pmod{12} g \to \infty}} g \log δ^+_g \le 2 \log δ(D_5) \approx 1.0870,$$ where $δ(D_n)$ is the minimal dilatation of pseudo-Anosovs on an $n$-punctured disk. We also study monodromies of fibrations on N(1). We prove that if $δ_{1,n}$ is the minimal dilatation of pseudo-Anosovs on a genus 1 surface with $n$ punctures, then $$ \limsup_{n \to \infty} n \log δ_{1,n} \le 2 \log δ(D_4) \approx 1.6628. $$

Entropy, Weil-Petersson translation distance and Gromov norm for surface automorphisms

Thanks to a theorem of Brock on comparison of Weil-Petersson translation distances and hyperbolic volumes of mapping tori for pseudo-Anosovs, we prove that the entropy of a surface automorphism in general has linear bounds in terms of Gromov norm of its mapping torus from below and in bounded geometry case from above. We also prove that the Weil-Petersson translation distance does the same from both sides in general. The proofs are in fact immediately derived from the theorem of Brock together with some other strong theorems and small observations.

Entropy vs volume for pseudo-Anosov maps

We will discuss theoretical and experimental results concerning comparison of entropy of pseudo-Anosov maps and volume of their mapping tori. Recent study of Weil-Petersson geometry of the Teichmüller space tells us that they admit linear inequalities for both sides under some bounded geometry condition. We construct a family of pseudo-Anosov maps which violates one side of inequalities under unbounded geometry setting, present an explicit bounding constant for a punctured torus, and provide several observations based on experiments.

Circle packings on surfaces with projective structures and uniformization

Let Σ_g be a closed orientable surface of genus g \geq 2 and τa graph on Σ_g with one vertex which lifts to a triangulation of the universal cover. We have shown that the cross ratio parameter space \mathcal{C}_τassociated with τ, which can be identified with the set of all pairs of a projective structure and a circle packing on it with nerve isotopic to τ, is homeomorphic to \mathbb{R}^{6g-6}, and moreover that the forgetting map of \mathcal{C}_τto the space of projective structures is injective. In this paper, we show that the composition of the forgetting map with the uniformization from \mathcal{C}_τto the Teichmüller space \mathcal{T}_g is proper.

Circle packings on surfaces with projective structures

The Andreev-Thurston theorem states that for any triangulation of a closed orientable surface Σ_g of genus g which is covered by a simple graph in the universal cover, there exists a unique metric of curvature 1, 0 or -1 on the surface depending on whether g=0, 1 or \ge 2 such that the surface with this metric admits a circle packing with combinatorics given by the triangulation. Furthermore, the circle packing is essentially rigid, that is, unique up to conformal automorphisms of the surface isotopic to the identity. In this paper, we consider projective structures on the surface Σ_g where circle packings are also defined. We show that the space of projective structures on a surface of genus g \ge 2 which admits a circle packing by one circle is homeomorphic to R^{6g-6} and furthermore that the circle packing is rigid on such surfaces.

Configuration spaces of points on the circle and hyperbolic Dehn fillings, II

In our previous paper, we discussed the hyperbolization of the configuration space of n(> 4) marked points with weights in the projective line up to projective transformations. A variation of the weights induces a deformation. It was shown that this correspondence of the set of the weights to the Teichmüller space when n = 5 and to the Dehn filling space when n= 6 is locally one-to-one near the equal weight. In this paper, we establish its global injectivity.

Complex hyperbolic cone structures on the configuration spaces

The space of marked n distinct points on the complex projective line up to projective transformations will be called a configuration space in this paper. There are two families of complex hyperbolic structures on the configuration space constructed by Deligne-Mostow and Thurston. We first confirm that these families are the same. Then in view of the deformation theory for real hyperbolic cone 3-manifolds, we review the families for small n.

Configuration spaces of points on the circle and hyperbolic Dehn fillings

A purely combinatorial compactification of the configuration space of n (>4) distinct points with equal weights in the real projective line was introduced by M. Yoshida. We geometrize it so that it will be a real hyperbolic cone-manifold of finite volume with dimension n-3. Then, we vary weights for points. The geometrization still makes sense and yields a deformation. The effectivity of deformations arisen in this manner will be locally described in the existing deformation theory of hyperbolic structures when n-3 = 2, 3.

Deformations of hyperbolic 3-cone-manioflds

We show that any compact orientable hyperbolic 3-cone-manifold with cone angle at most πcan be continuously deformed to a complete hyperbolic manifold homeomorphic to the complement of the singularity. This together with the local rigidity by Hodgson and Kerckhoff implies the global rigidity for compact orientable hyperbolic 3-cone-manifolds under the same angle assumption.

Compact hyperbolic universe and singularities

Recently many people have discussed the possibility that the universe is hyperbolic and was in an inflationary phase in the early stage. Under these assumptions, it is shown that the universe cannot have compact hyperbolic time-slices. Though the universal covering space of the universe has a past Cauchy horizon and can be extended analytically beyond it, the extended region has densely many points which correspond to singularities of the compact universe. The result is essentially attributed to the ergodicity of the geodesic flow on a compact negatively curved manifold. Validity of the result is also discussed in the case of inhomogeneous universe. Relationship with the strong cosmic censorship conjecture is also discussed.
