A numerical lift force analysis on the inertial migration of a deformable droplet in steady and oscillatory microchannel flows at different Capillary numbers and oscillation frequencies

Inertial migration of deformable particles has become appealing in recent years due to its numerous applications in microfluidics and biomedicine. The physics underlying the motion of such particles is contingent upon the presence of lift forces in microchannels. This importance initiated several works to analyze and quantify such forces acting on particles. However, since most of such attempts have focused on solid and non-deformable particles, we extend the lift force analysis for the case of deformable droplets and study the effects of Capillary numbers on their dynamics in this paper. Furthermore, utilizing oscillatory flows as an alternative for steady currents within the microchannels has been proved to be beneficial by introducing new equilibrium positions for the particles. Therefore, the present analysis includes the oscillatory regimes and identifies the effects of oscillation frequencies on lift forces as well. We then propose an expression that mimics the lift force behavior in oscillatory flows accurately. Finally, we introduce a procedure to derive and predict a simple expression for the steady and averaged oscillatory lift for any given combination of Capillary number and oscillation frequency within a continuous range.

Dynamics of a droplet migration in oscillatory and pulsating microchannel flows and prediction and uncertainty quantification of its lateral equilibrium position using Multi Fidelity Gaussian processes

Dynamics of a droplet in oscillatory and pulsating flows of a Newtonian fluid in a microchannel has been studied numerically. The effects of oscillation frequency, surface tension, and channel flow rate have been explored by simulating the drop within a microchannel. These types of flows introduce new equilibrium positions for the drop compared to steady flows with similar conditions. The simulation results are very sensitive to the grid resolution due to the unsteady behavior of the base flow. Therefore, a set of fine grids have been used in this study to capture the physics of this problem more accurately. However, these fine grids make the computations significantly expensive. Therefore, a Multi Fidelity Gaussian processes method with two levels of fidelity has been used to predict the results of the remaining fine-grid simulations along with their uncertainties based on their correlations with those of the coarse-grid cases over a wide range of input parameters.

Inertial migration of a deformable capsule in an oscillatory flow in a microchannel

Dynamics of a deformable capsule in an oscillatory flow of a Newtonian fluid in a microchannel has been studied numerically. The effects of oscillation frequency, capsule deformability, and channel flow rate have been explored by simulating the capsule within a microchannel. In addition, the simulation captures the effect of the type of imposed pressure oscillations on the migration pattern of the capsule. An oscillatory channel flow enables the focusing of extremely small biological particles by eliminating the need to design impractically long channels. The presented results show that the equilibrium position of the capsule changes not only by the addition of an oscillatory component to the pressure gradient, but it also is influenced by the capsule deformability and channel flow rate. Furthermore, it has been shown that the amplitude of oscillation of capsules decreases as the channel flow rate and the rigidity of the capsule increases.

Numerical investigation of elasto-inertial particle focusing patterns in viscoelastic microfluidic devices

Viscoelastic microfluidic devices are promising for various microscale procedures such as particle sorting and separation. In this study, we perform three dimensional computational investigation of a particle in a viscoelastic channel flow by considering combined inertial and elastic effects. We calculate equilibrium positions of the particle in the microchannel for a wide range of Reynolds and Weissenberg numbers, which are important in the design of microfluidic devices. The results provide an insight into the motion of cells and particles and explain the findings of previous experiments. Furthermore, we suggest new particle behaviors that have not been found before. Ultimately, a phase diagram is provided to predict the particle dynamics under a wide range of inertial and elastic effects.

Fully Resolved Numerical Simulations of Fused Deposition Modeling. Part I-Fluid Flow

Purpose - This paper presents a first step toward developing a comprehensive methodology for fully resolved numerical simulations of fusion deposition modeling. Design/methodology/approach - A front-tracking/finite volume method previously developed for simulations of multiphase flows is extended to model the injection of hot polymer and its cooling down. Findings - The accuracy and convergence properties of the new method are tested by grid refinement and the method is shown to produce convergent solutions for the shape of the filament, the temperature distribution, contact area and reheat region when new filaments are deposited on top of previously laid down filaments. Research limitations/implications - The present paper focuses on modeling the fluid flow and the cooling. The modeling of solidification, volume changes and residual stresses will be described in Part II. Practical implications - The ability to carry our fully resolved numerical simulations of the fusion deposition process is expected to help explore new deposition strategies and to provide the "ground truth" for the development of reduced order models. Originality/value - The present paper is the first fully resolved simulation of the deposition in fusion filament modeling.

Effect of bubble deformability on the vertical channel bubbly flow

This article describes the fluid dynamics video: "Effect of bubble deformability on the vertical channel bubbly flow". The effect of bubble deformability on the flow rate of bubbly upflow in a turbulent vertical channel is examined using direct numerical simulations. A series of simulations with bubbles of decreasing deformability reveals a sharp transition from a flow with deformable bubbles uniformly distributed in the middle of the channel to a flow with nearly spherical bubbles with a wall-peak bubble distribution and a much lower flow rate.

Turbulent Bubbly Channel Flow: Role of Bubble Deformability

This article describes the fluid dynamics video: "Turbulent Bubbly Channel Flow: Role of Bubble Deformability." The effect of bubble deformability on the flow rate of bubbly upflow in a turbulent vertical channel is examined using direct numerical simulations. A series of simulations with bubbles of decreasing deformability shows a transition from flow where deformable bubbles remain in the middle of the channel to a situation where nearly spherical bubbles slide along the walls.
