Giant optical spin-orbit interactions in ferroelectric van der Waals waveguides

Optical spin-orbit interactions (SOI) link photonic spin to momentum, offering a route toward on-chip polarization control and beam steering. Nevertheless, achieving sufficient optical SOI and nonlinearities on sub-micrometer scales - a prerequisite for dense photonic integration - remains an outstanding challenge. Here, we show that highly birefringent van der Waals (vdW) waveguides provide an ideal, chip-compatible platform to address this limitation. We focus on the ferroelectric semiconductor NbOI2, which exhibits record optical nonlinearities and dielectric anisotropy. Using femtosecond optical microscopy, we image light propagation and harmonic conversion beyond the total internal reflection barrier over tens of micrometers in NbOI2 slab waveguides. We report giant optical spin-splitting through the optical spin Hall effect, which facilitates spatial separation of optical spin currents on sub-micrometer scales, in quantitative agreement with a microscopic light-matter interaction model. We further leverage optical spin-momentum locking to realize polarization-controlled waveguide steering. We generalize these observations across various vdW waveguides and empirically confirm a scaling law linking dielectric anisotropy to geometric spin-splitting. Our results establish highly anisotropic vdW waveguides as an ideal platform for densely integrated opto-spintronic technologies.

Exciton-Polariton Dynamics in Multilayered Materials

Coupling excitons with quantized radiation has been shown to enable coherent ballistic transport at room temperature inside optical cavities. Previous theoretical works employ a simple description of the material, depicting it as a one-dimensional single layer placed in the middle of an optical cavity, thereby ignoring the spatial variation of the radiation field. In contrast, in most experiments, the optical cavity is filled with organic molecules or multiple layers of two-dimensional materials. Here, we develop an efficient mixed-quantum-classical approach, introducing a bright layer description, to simulate the exciton-polariton quantum dynamics in three dimensions. Our simulations reveal that, for the same Rabi splitting, a multilayered material extends the quantum coherence lifetime and enhances transport compared to a single-layer material. We find that this enhanced coherence can be traced to a synchronization of phonon fluctuations over multiple layers, wherein the collective light-matter coupling in a multilayered material effectively suppresses the phonon-induced dynamical disorder.

Tilted Material in an Optical Cavity: Light-Matter Moiré Effect and Coherent Frequency Conversion

Exciton-polaritons formed inside optical cavities offer a highly tunable platform for exploring novel quantum phenomena. Here, we introduce and theoretically characterize a light-matter moiré effect (LMME) that arises when a 2D material is tilted inside a planar optical cavity, in contrast to stacking multiple layers at a twist angle as is done in forming 2D moiré hetero-structures. We show that this geometric tilt produces emergent periodicity in the light-matter coupling, yielding displaced replicas of the polariton dispersion and flat bands near the Brillouin-zone center. Through time-dependent quantum dynamical simulations, we demonstrate that LMME enables coherent frequency conversion and remains robust against phonon-induced decoherence. Our findings establish LMME as a new platform for engineering polariton band structures, the generation of flat bands and performing coherent frequency conversion relevant for developing polariton-based quantum devices.

Mean-field Mixed Quantum-Classical Approach for Many-Body Quantum Dynamics of Exciton-Polaritons

In this work, we use a mixed quantum-classical (mean-field) many-body approach for simulating the quantum dynamics of excitons and exciton-polaritons beyond the single-excitation subspace. We combine the multitrajectory Ehrenfest approach, which propagates slow degrees of freedom classically, with the Gross-Pitaevskii method, which propagates fast degrees of freedom in a mean-field fashion. We use this mean-field many-body Ehrenfest approach to analyze how the phonon-induced dynamic disorder and the many-body interaction affect the incoherent and coherent dynamics of excitons and exciton-polaritons. We examine how the number of excitations and the strength of repulsive exciton-exciton interaction nonlinearly influence the transport, Fröhlich scattering and decoherence.

Disorder induced topological phase transition in a driven Majorana chain

We study a periodically driven one dimensional Kitaev model in the presence of disorder. In the clean limit our model exhibits four topological phases corresponding to the existence or non-existence of edge modes at zero and pi quasienergy. When disorder is added, the system parameters get renormalized and the system may exhibit a topological phase transition. When starting from the Majorana $π$ Mode (MPM) phase, which hosts only edge Majoranas with quasienergy pi, disorder induces a transition into a neighboring phase with both pi and zero modes on the edges. We characterize the disordered system using (i) exact diagonalization (ii) Arnoldi mapping onto an effective tight binding chain and (iii) topological entanglement entropy.

Topological anomalous Floquet photon pump

There is a close theoretical connection between topological Floquet physics and cavity QED, yet this connection has not been realized experimentally due to complicated cavity QED models that often arise. We propose a simple, experimentally viable protocol to realize non-adiabatic topological photon pumping mediated by a single qubit, which we dub the anomalous Floquet photon pump. For both quantized photons and external drive, the system exhibits a non-trivial topological phase across a broad range of parameter space. Transitions out of the topological phase result from frequency-space delocalization. Finally, we argue that the protocol can be implemented in existing experiments via driven qubit non-linearities, with topological pumping witnessed in measurements of the cavity Wigner distribution functions.

Probing topological phases in a perturbed Kane-Mele model via RKKY interaction: Application to monolayer jacutingaite Pt$_2$HgSe$_3$

Quantum spin Hall insulators (QSHIs) are promising for spintronics, leveraging strong spin-orbit coupling for efficient spin manipulation via electrical and optical methods, with potential applications in memory storage, quantum computing, and spin-based logic. While the Kane-Mele model effectively captures the low-energy physics of these materials, the impact of perturbations driving phase transitions is less well understood. Developing approaches to describe these phases is crucial. Here, we study the noncollinear Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between two magnetic impurities in a \textit{perturbed} Kane-Mele model with strong spin-orbit coupling, relevant to monolayer jacutingaite Pt$_2$HgSe$_3$ as a prominent QSHI. By analyzing RKKY interactions, we reveal distinct, relative (rather than absolute) signatures of the different phase transitions induced by static and dynamic perturbations based on their impact on magnetic impurities. We then employ these perturbations to switch between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic or clockwise and counterclockwise magnetic interactions for control processes. Our results offer a practical way to track topological phases via magnetic properties.

Cavity induced many-body localization

In this manuscript, we explore the feasibility of achieving many-body localization in the context of cavity quantum electrodynamics at strong coupling. Working with a spinless electronic Hubbard chain sitting coupled to a single-mode cavity, we show that the global coupling between electrons and photons -- which generally would be expected to delocalize the fermionic excitations -- can instead favor the appearance of localization. This is supported by a novel high-frequency expansion that correctly accounts for electron-photon interaction at strong coupling, as well as numerical calculations in both single particle and many-bod regimes. We find evidence that many-body localization may survive strong quantum fluctuations of the photon number by exploring energy dependence, seeing signatures of localization down to photon numbers as small as $n\sim2$.

Inverted many-body mobility edge in a central qudit problem

Many interesting experimental systems, such as cavity QED or central spin models, involve global coupling to a single harmonic mode. Out-of-equilibrium, it remains unclear under what conditions localized phases survive such global coupling. We study energy-dependent localization in the disordered Ising model with transverse and longitudinal fields coupled globally to a $d$-level system (qudit). Strikingly, we discover an inverted mobility edge, where high energy states are localized while low energy states are delocalized. Our results are supported by shift-and-invert eigenstate targeting and Krylov time evolution up to $L=13$ and $18$ respectively. We argue for a critical energy of the localization phase transition which scales as $E_c \propto L^{1/2}$, consistent with finite size numerics. We also show evidence for a reentrant MBL phase at even lower energies despite the presence of strong effects of the central mode in this regime. Similar results should occur in the central spin-$S$ problem at large $S$ and in certain models of cavity QED.

Study of the effect of nearest neighbors on ferromagnetic to paramagnetic phase transition in 2D lattices by Monte Carlo algorithm

In this work we try to use the Monte Carlo algorithm, metropolis, to study the behavior of 2D magnetic systems; honeycomb, hexagonal and square lattices. In this study we use Ising Model of magnetism, with considering only nearest neighbors in the Hamiltonian and with the Ferromagnetic correlation constant. The code was written in Payton. In this calculation, by comparing the results obtained for all lattices, we will show that the paramagnetic to ferromagnetic phase transition depends on the number of neighbor and it is a direct dependence.
