Collective light-matter interaction in plasmonic waveguide quantum electrodynamics

Rabi oscillations characterize light-matter hybridization in the waveguide quantum electrodynamics~(WQED) framework, with their associated decay rates reflecting excitation damping, yet their behavior remains unresolved when collective emitters are coupled to a collective waveguide mode. This scenario reveals a conceptually novel collective-light-collective-matter interaction, realizable when a timed-Dicke state~(TDS) of subwavelength emitters couples to a slow, delocalized surface-plasmon mode, forming a hybridized plasmon-polariton~(HPP). The HPP acquires its directionality from the TDS via momentum matching. It also exhibits plasmonic characteristics, with excitation frequencies following the surface-plasmon dispersion relation. We obtain a Rabi oscillation and a long-time decay that describe the HPP and use them to reveal weak- and strong-coupling regimes through the emergence of normal-mode splitting. By performing a finite-time Lyapunov-exponent analysis, we show that the HPP also exhibits instantaneous decay and identify three distinct decay regimes: early-time rapid, transient-time oscillatory, and long-time classical. Finally, by analyzing the emission spectrum, we observe an anticrossing of the peak doublets~(a feature also seen in cavity QED setups) which originates from quantum vacuum effects and the resulting non-Markovian HPP evolution in our WQED.

On chip plasmonic slit cavity platform for room temperature strong coupling with deterministically positioned colloidal quantum dots

Strong coupling between quantum emitters and optical cavities is essential for quantum information processing, high-purity single-photon sources, and nonlinear quantum devices. Achieving this regime at room temperature in a compact, deterministic on-chip platform-critical for integration with nanoelectronic circuitry and scalable device architectures-remains a major challenge, mainly due to the difficulty of fabricating cavities with ultra-small mode volumes and precisely positioning quantum emitters. Here, we demonstrate a robust quantum plasmonic device in which colloidal quantum dots (Qdots) are strongly coupled to plasmonic slit cavities using a dielectrophoresis-based positioning technique with real-time photoluminescence (PL) feedback, providing directly resolvable coupled structures that enable parallel device fabrication and straightforward integration with additional optical elements such as waveguides. Our measurements reveal clear PL resolved Rabi splitting at room temperature with pre characterized cavities, with variations across devices that scale with the average number of coupled Qdots. While electrical tuning via the quantum-confined Stark effect is enabled by integrated electrodes, its impact is largely overshadowed by room-temperature spectral diffusion. Our results pave the way for scalable, electrically tunable quantum plasmonic platforms, offering new opportunities for integrated quantum photonic circuits, active light-matter interactions, and room-temperature quantum technologies.

Synthetic plasmonic lattice formation through invariant frequency comb excitation in graphene structures

Nonlinear surface-plasmon polaritons~(NSPPs) in nanophotonic waveguides excite with dissimilar temporal properties due to input field modifications and material characteristics, but they possess similar nonlinear spectral evolution. In this work, we uncover the origin of this similarity and establish that the spectral dynamics is an inherent property of the system that depends on the synthetic dimension and is beyond waveguide geometrical dimensionality. To this aim, we design an ultra-low loss nonlinear plasmonic waveguide, to establish the invariance of the surface plasmonic frequency combs~(FCs) and phase singularities for plasmonic peregrine waves and Akhmediev breather. By finely tuning the nonlinear coefficient of the interaction interface, we uncover the conservation conditions through this plasmonic system and employ the mean-value evolution of the quantum NSPP field commensurate with the Schrödinger equation to evaluate spectral dynamics of the plasmonic FCs~(PFCs). Through providing suppressed interface losses and modified nonlinearity as dual requirements for conservative conditions, we propose exciting PFCs as equally spaced invariant quantities of this plasmonic scheme and prove that the spectral dynamics of the NSPPs within the interaction interface yields the formation of plasmonic analog of the synthetic photonic lattice, which we termed \textit{synthetic plasmonic lattice}~(SPL).

Coherent amplification and lasing of weak surface-plasmon polaritons in a negative-index metamaterial with a resonant atomic medium

Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) lasing requires population inversion, it is inefficient and possesses poor spectral properties. We develop an inversion-less concept for a quantum plasmonic waveguide that exploits unidirectional superradiant SPP emission of radiation to produce intense coherent surface plasmon beams. Our scheme includes a resonantly driven cold atomic medium in a lossless dielectric situated above an ultra-low loss negative index metamaterial~(NIMM) layer. We propose generating unidirectional superradiant radiation of the plasmonic field within an atomic medium and a NIMM layer interface and achieve amplified SPPs by introducing phase-match between the superradiant SPP wave and coupled laser fields. We also establish a parametric resonance between the weak modulated plasmonic field and the collective oscillations of the atomic ensemble, thereby suppressing decoherence of the stably amplified directional polaritonic mode. Our method incorporates the quantum gain of the atomic medium to obtain sufficient conditions for coherent amplification of superradiant SPP waves, and we explore this method to quantum dynamics of the atomic medium being coupled with the weak polaritonic waves. Our waveguide configuration acts as a surface plasmon laser and quantum plasmonic transistor and opens prospects for designing controllable nano-scale lasers for quantum and nano-photonic applications.

Surface-polaritonic phase singularities and multimode polaritonic frequency combs via dark rogue-wave excitation in hybrid plasmonic waveguide

Material characteristics and input-field specifics limit the controllability of nonlinear electromagnetic-field interactions. As these nonlinear interactions could be exploited to create strongly localized bright and dark waves, such as nonlinear surface polaritons, ameliorating this limitation is important. We present our approach to amelioration, which is based on a surface-polaritonic waveguide reconfiguration that enables excitation, propagation and coherent control of coupled dark rogue waves having orthogonal polarizations. Our control mechanism is achieved by finely tuning laser-field intensities and their respective detuning at the interface between the atomic medium and the metamaterial layer. In particular, we utilize controllable electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) windows commensurate with surface-polaritonic polarization-modulation instability to create symmetric and asymmetric polaritonic frequency combs associated with dark localized waves. Our method takes advantage of an atomic self-defocusing nonlinearity and dark rogue-wave propagation to obtain a sufficient condition for generating phase singularities. Underpinning this method is our theory which incorporates dissipation and dispersion due to the atomic medium being coupled to nonlinear surface-polaritonic waves~(SPWs). Consequently, our waveguide configuration acts as a bimodal polaritonic frequency-comb generator and a high-speed phase rotator, thereby opening prospects for phase singularities in nanophotonic and quantum communication devices.

Polaritonic frequency-comb generation and breather propagation in a negative-index metamaterial with a cold four-level atomic medium

We develop a concept for a waveguide that exploits spatial control of nonlinear surface-polaritonic waves. Our scheme includes an optical cavity with four-level $\text{N}$-type atoms in a lossless dielectric placed above a negative-index metamaterial layer. We propose exciting a polaritonic Akhmediev breather at a certain position of the interface between the atomic medium and the metamaterial by modifying laser-field intensities and detunings. Furthermore, we propose generating position-dependent polaritonic frequency combs by engineering widths of the electromagnetically induced transparency window commensurate with the surface-polaritonic modulation instability. Therefore, this waveguide acts as a high-speed polaritonic modulator and position-dependent frequency-comb generator, which can be applied to compact photonic chips.
