An Application of a Self-consistent Mean-Field Theoretical Model to POPC-PSM-Cholesterol Bilayers

The connection between membrane inhomogeneity and the structural basis of lipid rafts has sparked interest in the lateral organization of model lipid bilayers of two and three components. In an effort to investigate anisotropic lipid distribution in mixed bilayers, a self-consistent mean-field theoretical model is applied to palmitoyloleoylphosphatidylcholine (POPC) - palmitoyl sphingomyelin (PSM) - Cholesterol mixtures. The compositional dependence of lateral organization in these mixtures is mapped onto a ternary plot. The model utilizes molecular dynamics simulations to estimate interaction parameters and to construct chain conformation libraries. We find that at some concentration ratios the bilayers separate spatially into regions of higher and lower chain order coinciding with areas enriched with PSM and POPC respectively. To examine the effect of the asymmetric chain structure of POPC on bilayer lateral inhomogeneity, we consider POPC-POPC interactions with and without angular dependence. Results are compared with experimental data and with results from a similar model for mixtures of dioleoylphosphatidylcholine (DOPC), steroyl sphingomyelin, and Cholesterol.

Random spread on the family of small-world networks

We present the analytical and numerical results of a random walk on the family of small-world graphs. The average access time shows a crossover from the regular to random behavior with increasing distance from the starting point of the random walk. We introduce an {\em independent step approximation}, which enables us to obtain analytic results for the average access time. We observe a scaling relation for the average access time in the degree of the nodes. The behavior of average access time as a function of $p$, shows striking similarity with that of the {\em characteristic length} of the graph. This observation may have important applications in routing and switching in networks with large number of nodes.

Shape anisotropy and Voids

Numerical simulations on a 2-dimensional model system showed that voids are induced primarily due to shape anisotropy in binary mixtures of interacting disks. The results of such a simple model account for the key features seen in a variety of flux experiments using liposomes and biological membranes.

Generalized Nambu system on S^3 and spinors

It is shown that the manifold S^3 can be equipped with a natural Nambu structure arising out of a cross product on the tangent space. Further, the group action of SU(2) on S^3 is shown to be Nambu action. Moreover, we compare the action of SU(2) on spinors with that of a Nambu system.

Momentum maps and Noether theorem for generalized Nambu mechanics

In Ref.~\cite{Sag} we proposed a geometric formulation of generalized Nambu mechanics. In the present paper we extend the class of Nambu systems by replacing the stringent condition of constancy of 3-form by closedness. We also explore the connection between continuous groups of symmetries and conservation laws for such systems. The Noether theorem for generalized Nambu systems is formulated by generalizing the notion of momentum map. In this case, a natural choice of dynamical variables for discussion of symmetries is 2-form fields. Thus the generators and the conserved quantities in Noether theorem are best expressed in terms of 2-forms. The connection between the generators and the conserved quantities is illustrated with the example of an axially symmetric top formulated as three dimensional Nambu system.

Effect of shape anisotropy on transport in a 2-dimensional computational model: Numerical simulations showing experimental features observed in biomembranes

We propose a 2-d computational model-system comprising a mixture of spheres and the objects of some other shapes, interacting via the Lennard-Jones potential. We propose a reliable and efficient numerical algorithm to obtain void statistics. The void distribution, in turn, determines the selective permeability across the system and bears a remarkable similarity with features reported in certain biological experiments.

On Generalized Nambu Mechanics

A geometric formulation of a generalization of Nambu mechanics is proposed. This formulation is carried out, wherever possible, in analogy with that of Hamiltonian systems. In this formulation, a strictly nondegenerate constant 3-form is attached to a 3n-dimensional phase space. Time evolution is governed by two Nambu functions. A Poisson bracket of 2-forms is introduced, which provides a Lie-algebra structure on the space of 2-forms. This formalism is shown to provide a suitable framework for the descrip tion of non-integrable fluid flow such as the Arter flow, the Chandrashekhar flow and of the coupled rigid bodies.
