Why does the Sun's torsional oscillation begin before the sunspot cycle?

Although the Sun's torsional oscillation is believed to be driven by the Lorentz force associated with the sunspot cycle, this oscillation begins 2--3 yr before the sunspot cycle. We provide a theoretical explanation of this with the help of a solar dynamo model having a meridional circulation penetrating slightly below the bottom of the convection zone, because only in such dynamo models the strong toroidal field forms a few years before the sunspot cycle and at a higher latitude.

Is Turbulence as Simple as Tossing a Coin?

A large variety of problems in statistical physics use a Gaussian distribution as a starting point. For the problem of intermittency in fluid turbulence, the Gaussian approximation is not a useful beginning. We find that the Cramer's rate function in the theory of large deviations as used in a simple coin toss is a promising starting point for giving an account of intermittency. In addition, it offers another view of Jarzynski equality.

Role of Third-Order Structure Function in Studying Two-Dimensionalisation of Turbulence

We look at various correlation functions, which include those that involve both the velocity and the vorticity fields, in two-dimensional (2D) isotropic homogeneous unforced turbulence. We adopt the more intuitive approach due to Kolmogorov (and subsequently, Landau in his text on fluid dynamics) and show that how the 2D turbulence's results, obtainable using other methods, may be established in a simpler way. Same method is used to calculate some third-order structure functions for quasi-geostrophic (QG) turbulence for the forward cascade of pseudo-potential enstrophy and the inverse energy cascade in quasi-geostrophic turbulence. These results motivate us to study the two-point third order structure function in the context of the two-dimensionalisation effect. Consequent studies enable us to give a reason for the inverse energy cascade in the two-dimensionalised rapidly rotating three dimensional (3D) incompressible turbulence. For such a system, literature shows a possibility of the exponent of wavenumber in the energy spectrum's relation to lie between -2 and -3. We argue the existence of a stricter range of -2 to -7/3 for the exponent in the case of rapidly rotating turbulence which is in accordance with the recent experiments. Also, a derivation for the two point third order structure function has been provided helping one to argue that even with slow rotation one gets, although dominated, a spectrum with the exponent -2.87, thereby hinting at the initiation of the two-dimensionalisation effect with rotation. Moreover, using the Gledzer-Ohkitani-Yamada (GOY) shell model, modified for rotation, these signatures of two-dimensionalisation effect have been verified.

A critical note on one-eighth law in 2D turbulence

We critically revisit the various attempts to prove one eighth law in 2D turbulence and reconcile them. Herein, the one-eight law has been proved for unforced 2D incompressible high Reynolds number turbulence. An exact expression of the time derivative of two-point second order velocity correlation function is also derived for the enstrophy cascade dominated regime.

On scaling laws in turbulent magnetohydrodynamic Rayleigh-Benard convection

We invoke the concepts of magnetic boundary layer and magnetic Rayleigh number and use the magnetic energy dissipation rates in the bulk and the boundary layers to derive some scaling laws expressing how Nusselt number depends on magnetic Rayleigh number, Prandtl number and magnetic Prandtl number for the simple case of turbulent magnetohydrodynamic Rayleigh-Benard convection in the presence of uniform vertical magnetic field.

On dynamics of velocity vector potential in incompressible fluids

An elegant quaternionic formulation is given for the Lagrangian advection equation for velocity vector potential in fluid dynamics. At first we study the topological significance of a restricted conserved quantity viz., stream-helicity and later more realistic configuration of open streamlines is figured out. Also, using Clebsch parameterisation of the velocity vector potential yet another physical significance for the stream-helicity is provided. Finally we give a Nambu-Poisson formalism of the Lagrangian advection equation for velocity vector potential.

On the MHD load and the MHD metage

In analogy with the load and the metage in hydrodynamics, we define magnetohydrodynamic load and magnetohydrodynamic metage in the case of magnetofluids. They can be used to write the magnetic field in MHD in Clebsch's form. We show how these two concepts can be utilised to derive the magnetic analogue of the Ertel's theorem and also, how in the presence of non-trivial topology of the magnetic field in the magnetofluid one may associate the linking number of the magnetic field lines with the invariant MHD loads. The paper illustrates that the symmetry translation of the MHD metage in the corresponding label space generates the conservation of cross helicity.

A study on bifurcation diagrams in relation to synchronisation in chaotic systems

We numerically study some of the 3-D dynamical systems which exhibit complete synchronisation as well as generalised synchronisation (GS) to show that these systems can be conveniently partitioned into equivalent classes facilitating the study of bifurcation diagrams (BDs) within each class. We demonstrate how BDs may be helpful in assessing the robustness of GS and in predicting the nature of the driven system by knowing the BD of driving system and vice versa. We extend the study to include the possible GS between elements of two different equivalent classes by taking the example of the Rossler-driven-Lorenz-system.

On the use of Kolmogorov-Landau approach in deriving various correlation functions in 2-D incompressible turbulence

We look at various correlation functions, which include those that involve both the velocity and the vorticity fields, in 2-D isotropic homogeneous decaying turbulence. We adopt the more intuitive approach due to Kolmogorov (and subsequently, Landau in his text on fluid dynamics) and show that how the 2-D turbulence results, obtainable using other methods, may be established in a simpler way. Also, some experimentally verifiable correlation functions in the dissipation range have been derived for the same system. The paper also showcases the inability of the Kolmogorov-Landau approach to get the ``one-eighth law'' in the enstrophy cascade region. As discussed in the paper, this may raise the spectre of logarithmic corrections once again in 2-D turbulence.

Effects of non-denumerable fixed points in finite dynamical systems

The motion of a spinning football brings forth the possible existence of a whole class of finite dynamical systems where there may be non-denumerably infinite number of fixed points. They defy the very traditional meaning of the fixed point that a point on the fixed point in the phase space should remain there forever, for, a fixed point can evolve as well! Under such considerations one can argue that a free-kicked football should be non-chaotic.

On the third order structure function for rotating 3D homogeneous turbulent flow

A form for the two-point third order structure function has been calculated for three dimensional homogeneous incompressible slowly rotating turbulent fluid. It has been argued that it may possibly hint at the initiation of the phenomenon of two-dimensionalisation of the 3D incompressible turbulence owing to rotation.

On knotted streamtubes in incompressible hydrodynamical flow and a restricted conserved quantity

For certain families of fluid flow, a new conserved quantity -- stream-helicity -- has been established.Using examples of linked and knotted streamtubes, it has been shown that stream-helicity does, in certain cases, entertain itself with a very precise topological meaning viz, measure of the degree of knottedness or linkage of streamtubes. As a consequence, stream-helicity emerges as a robust topological invariant.

Signatures of two-dimensionalisation of 3D turbulence in presence of rotation
