Free Surface Deformation and Cusp Formation During the Drainage of a Very Viscous Fluid

We report an experimental study of the deformation of the free surface of a very viscous fluid when drained out of a container through a circular orifice. At some critical height of the fluid, the free surface deforms and forms a dimple. At later times, this dimple becomes a cusp. We found that the height of the dimple measured from the bottom of the tank as well as the curvature of the dimple before the cusp formation, follows power laws behaviors. We found that this behavior was due to an interplay between viscous pressure and surface tension

Rippling Instability of a Collapsing Bubble

When a bubble of air rises to the top of a highly viscous liquid, it forms a dome-shaped protuberance on the free surface. Unlike a soap bubble, it bursts so slowly as to collapse under its own weight simultaneously, and folds into a striking wavy structure. This rippling effect occurs in fact for both elastic and viscous sheets, and a theory for its onset is formulated. The growth of the corrugation is governed by the competition between gravitational and bending (shearing) forces and is exhibited for a range of densities, stiffnesses (viscosities), and sizes -- a result which arises less from dynamics than from geometry, suggesting a wide validity. A quantitative expression for the number of ripples is presented, together with experimental results which are in agreement with the theoretical predictions.

Crescent singularities and stress focusing in a developable cone

we investigate developable cones (d-cones) topology and mechanical properties. We found that for a sample of a finite thickness the singularity is never pointlike but has a spatial extension in form of a crescent. The variations of the sheet local curvature versus the distance from the d-cone tip for all deformations showed that the d-cone tip is rejected by a distance which depends on the deformation and on the singularity extension. A further deformation of the d-cone leads to a transition to a plastic deformation equivalent to a decrease in the singularity size characterized from curvature and profile analysis. The crescent radius of curvature is measured both at small deformations and at large deformations. It is found that during the buckling process, the curvature of the crescent exhibit two different scaling versus the deformation. From the cone profile, we measured the reaction force of the plate to deformation and from force measurements, the energy necessary to create the singularity is characterized.

Spontaneous Curvature-induced pearling instability

We investigate the instability of a tubular fluid membranes made of a water soluble surfactant. The tubules are obtained at high salinities. The instability is due to the introduction within the vesicle multilayer of an alkane. We measure the wavelength of this instability versus the unperturbed radius of the tubules. To interpretthis dependance we use a model that includes not only the surface tension in the elastic energy but the spontaneous curvature as well. The spontaneous curvature is induced by the presenceof the oil in the bilayer of the membrane and give a selection of a non-zero wavelength.
