A novel directional coupler utilizing a left-handed material

A novel directional coupler with a left-handed material (LHM) layer between two single-mode waveguides of usual material is introduced. The coupling system is analyzed with the supermode theory. It is shown that such a LHM layer of finite length can shorten significantly the coupling length for the two single-mode waveguides. A LHM layer with two slowly tapered ends is used to avoid the reflection loss at the ends.

An open cavity formed with a photonic crystal of negative refraction

A novel open cavity formed by three 60-degree wedges of a photonic crystal with negative effective index is designed and studied. The quality factor of the open cavity can be larger than 2000. The influence of the interface termination on the resonant frequency and the quality factor is studied.

How to realize a negative refractive index material at the atomic level in an optical frequency range

The theoretical mechanism for realizing the negative refractive index with {\it electromagnetically induced transparency} (EIT) is studied. It is shown that in a three-level dense atomic gas, there is a frequency band in which the EIT medium will exhibit simultaneously negative electric permittivity and magnetic permeability in the optical frequency range, and the atomic gas thus becomes a left-handed material. The expressions for the electric permittivity and the magnetic permeability for the probe frequency is presented. One of the remarkable features of the present novel scheme is such that the obtained EIT left-handed material is {\it isotropic} and may therefore have some potentially important applications in the development of new techniques in quantum optics.

Explicit formula for the external driving field used to eliminate the decoherence of a two-state system coupled to a noise field

The elimination of decoherence of a multiphoton two-state quantum system by using an appropriate external driving field is considered. The multiphoton process caused by the noise field has a supersymmetric Lie algebraic structure. The time-evolution equations for the off-diagonal elements of the density operator of the two-state system are derived in the interaction picture. A simple explicit formula is given for the time-dependent external driving field used to eliminate the decoherence of the multiphoton two-state system.

Influence of the signal light on the transient optical properties of a four-level EIT medium

General formulae for the transient evolution of the susceptibility (absorption) induced by the quantum interference effect in a four-level N-type EIT medium is presented. The influence of the signal light on the transient susceptibility for the probe beam is studied for two typical cases when the strength of the coupling beam is much greater or less than that of the signal field. An interesting level reciprocity relationship between these two cases is found.

Finite-size effects of a left-handed material slab on the image quality

The characteristics of an imaging system formed by a left-handed material (LHM) slab of finite length are studied, and the influence of the finite length of the slab on the image quality is analyzed. Unusual phenomena such as surface bright spots and negative energy stream at the image side are observed and explained as the cavity effects of surface plasmons excited by the evanescent components of the incident field. For a thin LHM slab, the cavity effects are found rather sensitive to the length of the slab, and the bright spots on the bottom surface of the slab may stretch to the image plane and degrade the image quality.

Imaging Studies of Characteristics for a Slab of a Lossy Left-handed Material

The characteristics of an imaging system formed by a slab of a lossy left-handed material (LHM) are studied. The transfer function of the LHM imaging system is written in an appropriate product form with each term having a clear physical interpretation. A tiny loss of the LHM may suppress the transmission of evanescent waves through the LHM slab and this is explained physically. An analytical expression for the resolution of the imaging system is derived. It is shown that it is impossible to make a subwavelength imaging by using a realistic LHM imaging system unless the LHM slab is much thinner than the wavelength.

On unusual narrow transmission bands for a multi-layered periodic structure containing left-handed materials

A multi-layered structure consisting of alternate right-handed material (RHM) and left-handed material (LHM)is considered and the unusual narrow transmission bands are explained as the competitive results of the Bragg condition and the transparent condition. These unusual narrow transmission bands may exist regardless whether the optical length of the LHM layer cancels the optical length of the RHM layer or not. This unusual transmission property may disappear when the reflection coefficient for each interface is small and the optical length of the LHM layer does not cancel the optical length of the RHM layer. An non-ideal model when the LHM is dispersive and lossy is also employed to confirm the unusual transmission phenomenon.

Abnormal phenomena in a one-dimensional periodic structure containing left-handed materials

The explicit dispersion equation for a one-dimensional periodic structure with alternative layers of left-handed material (LHM) and right-handed material (RHM) is given and analyzed. Some abnormal phenomena such as spurious modes with complex frequencies, discrete modes and photon tunnelling modes are observed in the band structure. The existence of spurious modes with complex frequencies is a common problem in the calculation of the band structure for such a photonic crystal. Physical explanation and significance are given for the discrete modes (with real values of wave number) and photon tunnelling propagation modes (with imaginary wave numbers in a limited region).

Frequency range and explicit expressions for negative permittivity and permeability for an isotropic medium formed by a lattice of perfectly conducting $Ω$ particles

An analytical model is presented for a rectangular lattice of isotropic scatterers with electric and magnetic resonances. Each isotropic scatterer is formed by putting appropriately 6 $Ω$-shaped perfectly conducting particles on the faces of a cubic unit cell. A self-consistent dispersion equation is derived and then used to calculate correctly the effective permittivity and permeability in the frequency band where the lattice can be homogenized. The frequency range in which both the effective permittivity and permeability are negative corresponds to the mini-band of backward waves within the resonant band of the individual isotropic scatterer.

Degeneracy analysis for a super cell of a photonic crystal and its application to the creation of band gaps

A method is introduced to analyze the degeneracy properties of the band structure of a photonic crystal making use of the super cells. The band structure associated with a super cell of a photonic crystal has degeneracies at the edge of the Brillouin zone if the photonic crystal has some kind of point group symmetry. Both E-polarization and H-polarization cases have the same degeneracies for a 2-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal. Two theorems are given and proved. These degeneracies can be lifted to create photonic band gaps by changing the transform matrix between the super cell and the smallest unit cell. The existence of the photonic band gaps for many known 2D photonic crystals is explained through the degeneracy analysis.
