Zero-Shot Frequency Generalization for Radio Map Prediction via Cross-Attention Physics-Residual Learning

Deep learning models for radio map prediction are trained and tested at the same carriers and cannot serve unseen frequencies. We propose a two-stream network learning a residual over an analytic prior, fusing environment and physics streams by cross-attention. Evaluated at the query frequency, this free-space and knife-edge prior absorbs dominant frequency scaling of pathloss, leaving a residual that varies little across bands. Across 150 ray-traced scenes and four training carriers (1.8--28 GHz), the method reduces RMSE by 35.3% zero-shot at unseen carriers and scenes, and by 37.6% at extrapolated 60 GHz, outperforming interpolated 10 GHz.

S.E.A.G.R: A Socially and Emotionally Aware Greeting Robot Framework with Dual-Layer Cultural and Affective Modulation

This paper presents SEAGR (Socially and Emotionally Aware Greeting Robot), a robotic greeting framework designed for human-robot interaction environments involving users from diverse cultural backgrounds and different emotional states. Since greeting behaviour strongly influences first impressions, user comfort, and trust, robots operating in public spaces must be able to interact in a socially appropriate and adaptive manner. However, many existing systems still rely on static greeting routines that do not account for cultural variation, emotional context, or interpersonal distance. SEAGR introduces a dual-layer modulation framework in which cultural identity determines the appropriate greeting type, while affective cues influence how that greeting is executed. The system combines context-aware cultural mapping, emotion-based gesture modulation, and proxemic regulation within a unified Sense-Think-Act architecture. A low-cost prototype is implemented using a USB camera, ultrasonic sensor, Arduino-controlled servos, and a laptop-based Python processing system. This work is presented as a system design and proof-of-concept; empirical validation through user studies is explicitly acknowledged as a current limitation and is identified as the primary direction for future work.

Joint Outage Detection and Compensation for Self-Healing 5G RAN via Deep Reinforcement Learning

Self-healing radio access network (RAN) requires autonomous detection and compensation of base station (BS) failures. This letter proposes an end-to-end framework combining three-class cell outage detection (COD), distinguishing normal, failed, and collaterally degraded cells, with a deep Q-Network (DQN) based deep reinforcement learning (DRL) agent that jointly controls power and antenna tilt for cell outage compensation (COC). Evaluation results show that the proposed DQN agent achieves 99.1% coverage and 54% full-recovery rate, an 11$\times$ improvement over the best heuristic, while consuming less compensation energy than heuristic baselines and learning, without explicit geometric input, to prefer tilt-only compensation for centre-cell outage.

Hybrid Framework for Robotic Manipulation: Integrating Reinforcement Learning and Large Language Models

This paper introduces a new hybrid framework that combines Reinforcement Learning (RL) and Large Language Models (LLMs) to improve robotic manipulation tasks. By utilizing RL for accurate low-level control and LLMs for high level task planning and understanding of natural language, the proposed framework effectively connects low-level execution with high-level reasoning in robotic systems. This integration allows robots to understand and carry out complex, human-like instructions while adapting to changing environments in real time. The framework is tested in a PyBullet-based simulation environment using the Franka Emika Panda robotic arm, with various manipulation scenarios as benchmarks. The results show a 33.5% decrease in task completion time and enhancements of 18.1% and 36.4% in accuracy and adaptability, respectively, when compared to systems that use only RL. These results underscore the potential of LLM-enhanced robotic systems for practical applications, making them more efficient, adaptable, and capable of interacting with humans. Future research will aim to explore sim-to-real transfer, scalability, and multi-robot systems to further broaden the framework's applicability.

RadioSim Agent: Combining Large Language Models and Deterministic EM Simulators for Interactive Radio Map Analysis

Deterministic electromagnetic (EM) simulators provide accurate radio propagation modeling but often require expert configuration and lack interactive flexibility. We present RadioSim Agent, an agentic framework that integrates large language models (LLMs) with physics-based EM solvers and vision-enabled reasoning to enable interactive and explainable radio map generation. The framework encapsulates ray-tracing models as callable simulation tools, orchestrated by an LLM capable of interpreting natural language objectives, managing simulation workflows, and visually analyzing resulting radio maps. Demonstrations in urban UAV communication scenarios show that the agent autonomously selects appropriate propagation mechanisms, executes deterministic simulations, and provides semantic and visual summaries of pathloss behavior. The results indicate that RadioSim Agent provides multimodal interpretability and intuitive user interaction, paving the way for intelligent EM simulation assistants in next-generation wireless system design.

A Multi-Scale Feature Extraction and Fusion UNet for Pathloss Prediction in UAV-Assisted mmWave Radio Networks

Accurate pathloss prediction is essential for the design and optimization of UAV-assisted millimeter-wave (mmWave) networks. While deep learning approaches have shown strong potential, their generalization across diverse environments, robustness to noisy inputs, and sensitivity to UAV altitude remain underexplored. To address these challenges, we propose a UNet-based deep learning architecture that combines multi-scale feature extraction, convolution-based feature fusion, and an atrous spatial pyramid pooling (ASPP) bottleneck for efficient context aggregation. The model predicts pathloss maps from log-distance, line-of-sight (LOS) mask, and building mask inputs. In addition, we develop a fully vectorized LOS mask computation algorithm that significantly accelerates pre-processing and enables large-scale dataset generation. Extensive evaluations on both in-house ray-tracing data and the RadioMapSeer benchmark demonstrate that the proposed model outperforms several state-of-the-art baselines in accuracy and efficiency. All source code is publicly released to support reproducibility and future research.

Proactive Blockage Prediction for UAV assisted Handover in Future Wireless Network

The future wireless communication applications demand seamless connectivity, higher throughput, and low latency, for which the millimeter-wave (mmWave) band is considered a potential technology. Nevertheless, line-of-sight (LoS) is often mandatory for mmWave band communication, and it renders these waves sensitive to sudden changes in the environment. Therefore, it is necessary to maintain the LoS link for a reliable connection. One such technique to maintain LoS is using proactive handover (HO). However, proactive HO is challenging, requiring continuous information about the surrounding wireless network to anticipate potential blockage. This paper presents a proactive blockage prediction mechanism where an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is used as the base station for HO. The proposed scheme uses computer vision (CV) to obtain potential blocking objects, user speed, and location. To assess the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, the system is evaluated using a publicly available dataset for blockage prediction. The study integrates scenarios from Vision-based Wireless (ViWi) and UAV channel modeling, generating wireless data samples relevant to UAVs. The antenna modeling on the UAV end incorporates a polarization-matched scenario to optimize signal reception. The results demonstrate that UAV-assisted Handover not only ensures seamless connectivity but also enhances overall network performance by 20%. This research contributes to the advancement of proactive blockage mitigation strategies in wireless networks, showcasing the potential of UAVs as dynamic and adaptable base stations.

A Survey on Energy Optimization Techniques in UAV-Based Cellular Networks: From Conventional to Machine Learning Approaches

Wireless communication networks have been witnessing an unprecedented demand due to the increasing number of connected devices and emerging bandwidth-hungry applications. Albeit many competent technologies for capacity enhancement purposes, such as millimeter wave communications and network densification, there is still room and need for further capacity enhancement in wireless communication networks, especially for the cases of unusual people gatherings, such as sport competitions, musical concerts, etc. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been identified as one of the promising options to enhance the capacity due to their easy implementation, pop up fashion operation, and cost-effective nature. The main idea is to deploy base stations on UAVs and operate them as flying base stations, thereby bringing additional capacity to where it is needed. However, because the UAVs mostly have limited energy storage, their energy consumption must be optimized to increase flight time. In this survey, we investigate different energy optimization techniques with a top-level classification in terms of the optimization algorithm employed; conventional and machine learning (ML). Such classification helps understand the state of the art and the current trend in terms of methodology. In this regard, various optimization techniques are identified from the related literature, and they are presented under the above mentioned classes of employed optimization methods. In addition, for the purpose of completeness, we include a brief tutorial on the optimization methods and power supply and charging mechanisms of UAVs. Moreover, novel concepts, such as reflective intelligent surfaces and landing spot optimization, are also covered to capture the latest trend in the literature.

A Lightweight Cell Switching and Traffic Offloading Scheme for Energy Optimization in Ultra-Dense Heterogeneous Networks

One of the major capacity boosters for 5G networks is the deployment of ultra-dense heterogeneous networks (UDHNs). However, this deployment results in tremendousincrease in the energy consumption of the network due to the large number of base stations (BSs) involved. In addition to enhanced capacity, 5G networks must also be energy efficient for it to be economically viable and environmentally friendly. Dynamic cell switching is a very common way of reducing the total energy consumption of the network but most of the proposed methods are computationally demanding which makes them unsuitable for application in ultra-dense network deployment with massive number of BSs. To tackle this problem, we propose a lightweight cell switching scheme also known as Threshold-based Hybrid cEllswItching Scheme (THESIS) for energy optimization in UDHNs. The developed approach combines the benefits of clustering and exhaustive search (ES) algorithm to produce a solution whose optimality is close to that of the ES (which is guaranteed tobe optimal), but is computationally more efficient than ES and as such can be applied for cell switching in real networks even when their dimension is large. The performance evaluation shows that the THESIS produces a significant reduction in the energy consumption of the UDHN and is able to reduce the complexity of finding a near-optimal solution from exponential to polynomial complexity.

Revenue Maximization through Cell Switching and Spectrum Leasing in 5G HetNets

One of the ways of achieving improved capacity in mobile cellular networks is via network densification. Even though densification increases the capacity of the network, it also leads to increased energy consumption which can be curbed by dynamically switching off some base stations (BSs) during periods of low traffic. However, dynamic cell switching has the challenge of spectrum under-utilizationas the spectrum originally occupied by the BSs that are turned off remains dormant. This dormant spectrum can be leased by the primary network (PN) operators, who hold the license, to the secondary network (SN) operators who cannot afford to purchase the spectrum license. Thus enabling the PN to gain additional revenue from spectrum leasing as well as from electricity cost savings due to reduced energy consumption. Therefore, in this work, we propose a cell switching and spectrum leasing framework based on simulated annealing (SA) algorithm to maximize the revenue of the PN while respecting the quality-of-service constraints. The performance evaluation reveals that the proposed method is very close to optimal exhaustive search method with a significant reduction in the computation complexity.

Energy Optimization in Ultra-Dense Radio Access Networks via Traffic-Aware Cell Switching

Ultra-dense deployments in 5G, the next generation of cellular networks, are an alternative to provide ultra-high throughput by bringing the users closer to the base stations. On the other hand, 5G deployments must not incur a large increase in energy consumption in order to keep them cost-effective and most importantly to reduce the carbon footprint of cellular networks. We propose a reinforcement learning cell switching algorithm, to minimize the energy consumption in ultra-dense deployments without compromising the quality of service (QoS) experienced by the users. In this regard, the proposed algorithm can intelligently learn which small cells (SCs) to turn off at any given time based on the traffic load of the SCs and the macro cell. To validate the idea, we used the open call detail record (CDR) data set from the city of Milan, Italy, and tested our algorithm against typical operational benchmark solutions. With the obtained results, we demonstrate exactly when and how the proposed algorithm can provide energy savings, and moreover how this happens without reducing QoS of users. Most importantly, we show that our solution has a very similar performance to the exhaustive search, with the advantage of being scalable and less complex.

Context-Aware Wireless Connectivity and Processing Unit Optimization for IoT Networks

A novel approach is presented in this work for context-aware connectivity and processing optimization of Internet of things (IoT) networks. Different from the state-of-the-art approaches, the proposed approach simultaneously selects the best connectivity and processing unit (e.g., device, fog, and cloud) along with the percentage of data to be offloaded by jointly optimizing energy consumption, response-time, security, and monetary cost. The proposed scheme employs a reinforcement learning algorithm, and manages to achieve significant gains compared to deterministic solutions. In particular, the requirements of IoT devices in terms of response-time and security are taken as inputs along with the remaining battery level of the devices, and the developed algorithm returns an optimized policy. The results obtained show that only our method is able to meet the holistic multi-objective optimisation criteria, albeit, the benchmark approaches may achieve better results on a particular metric at the cost of failing to reach the other targets. Thus, the proposed approach is a device-centric and context-aware solution that accounts for the monetary and battery constraints.

Idiosyncratic Approach to Visualize Degradation of Black Phosphorus

Black Phosphorus (BP) is an excellent material for post graphene era due to its layer dependent band gap, high mobility and high Ion/Ioff. However, its poor stability in ambient poses a great challenge in its practical and long-term usage. Optical visualization of oxidized BP is the key and foremost step for its successful passivation from the ambience. Here, we have done a systematic study of the oxidation of BP and developed a technique to optically identify the oxidation of BP using Liquid Crystal (LC). Interestingly we found that rapid oxidation of thin layers of BP makes them disappear and can be envisaged by using the alignment of LC. The molecular dynamics simulations also proved the preferential alignment of LC on oxidized BP. We believe that this simple technique will be effective in passivation efforts of BP and will enable it for exploitation of its properties in the field of electronics.
