NepScript Genesis: Neural Architecture Search for Handwritten Devanagari Digit Synthesis

This paper introduces NepScript Genesis, a Neural Architecture Search (NAS) framework for automated Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) discovery, applied to conditional Devanagari handwritten digit synthesis. We compare five NAS strategies against a carefully constructed Deep Convolutional GAN (DCGAN) baseline (FID=332.28). Architecture selection utilizes a two-stage pipeline guided by a novel domain-aware evaluation metric (Enhanced Score). Results demonstrate that Adaptive Exploration achieves the optimal quality-efficiency trade-off, attaining an FID of 79.12 -- a 76.19% improvement over the baseline -- and the highest mode coverage among the NAS strategies (Recall=0.531) in under one GPU-hour. Furthermore, we demonstrate that incorporating script-specific structural heuristics into the search phase prevents early-stage mode collapse. In a downstream low-resource evaluation, augmenting 250 real training samples per class with GAN-generated digits from the best NAS model improves CNN classification accuracy from 91.0% to 96.5% (+5.5 percentage points), demonstrating that NAS-optimized synthesis produces digits of sufficient quality to benefit practical recognition pipelines when real data is scarce.

Disc-Centric Contrastive Learning for Lumbar Spine Severity Grading

This work examines a disc-centric approach for automated severity grading of lumbar spinal stenosis from sagittal T2-weighted MRI. The method combines contrastive pretraining with disc-level fine-tuning, using a single anatomically localized region of interest per intervertebral disc. Contrastive learning is employed to help the model focus on meaningful disc features and reduce sensitivity to irrelevant differences in image appearance. The framework includes an auxiliary regression task for disc localization and applies weighted focal loss to address class imbalance. Experiments demonstrate a 78.1% balanced accuracy and a reduced severe-to-normal misclassification rate of 2.13% compared with supervised training from scratch. Detecting discs with moderate severity can still be challenging, but focusing on disc-level features provides a practical way to assess the lumbar spinal stenosis.

ScriptViT: Vision Transformer-Based Personalized Handwriting Generation

Styled handwriting generation aims to synthesize handwritten text that looks both realistic and aligned with a specific writer's style. While recent approaches involving GAN, transformer and diffusion-based models have made progress, they often struggle to capture the full spectrum of writer-specific attributes, particularly global stylistic patterns that span long-range spatial dependencies. As a result, capturing subtle writer-specific traits such as consistent slant, curvature or stroke pressure, while keeping the generated text accurate is still an open problem. In this work, we present a unified framework designed to address these limitations. We introduce a Vision Transformer-based style encoder that learns global stylistic patterns from multiple reference images, allowing the model to better represent long-range structural characteristics of handwriting. We then integrate these style cues with the target text using a cross-attention mechanism, enabling the system to produce handwritten images that more faithfully reflect the intended style. To make the process more interpretable, we utilize Salient Stroke Attention Analysis (SSAA), which reveals the stroke-level features the model focuses on during style transfer. Together, these components lead to handwriting synthesis that is not only more stylistically coherent, but also easier to understand and analyze.
