Shuf-Scatter: Permutation-Based DLI Suppression for OFDM Ambient Backscatter

Direct Link Interference (DLI) remains a major bottleneck in Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM)-based Ambient Backscatter Communication (AmBC) systems. This letter proposes Shuf-Scatter, a scheme that applies a deterministic permutation to the reflected OFDM waveform to create a distinct correlation-domain signature. By exploiting the quasi-orthogonality between the reshuffled backscatter signal and the direct-link component, the proposed receiver effectively mitigates DLI and enables reliable detection without requiring dedicated spectral resources, or instantaneous Backscatter-Link (BL) Channel State Information (CSI). Analytical and simulation results demonstrate that Shuf-Scatter achieves superior Bit Error Rate (BER) performance under strong DLI while preserving the integrity of the legacy OFDM transmission.

Timing Misalignment and Its Impact on OTFS and Other Delay-Based Waveforms

The shift towards 6G wireless networks calls for advanced waveforms to support emerging applications such as ultra-reliable and massive machine-type communications. Among the proposed candidates, OTFS, ODDM, OTSM, and OCDM share the common feature of exploiting the delay domain for data transmission. While these waveforms offer significant advantages in high-mobility and sensing scenarios, their integration into multi-user uplink systems reveals a critical challenge: timing misalignment (TM). Unlike OFDM, where residual timing offsets translate into phase rotations, delay-based waveforms experience actual shifts of resources, whose impact we investigate in this work. We show that the aforementioned waveforms can be unified under a time-invariant setup through a common input--output relation, which enables a unified analysis of TM in uplink resource allocation. The results reveal a fundamental trade-off between interference mitigation and guard overhead in the presence of TM. We further benchmark the observed behavior against OFDM under Doppler spread as a reference impairment and highlight the analogy between TM in delay-based allocation and Doppler spread in frequency-based allocation. The results show that delay-based waveforms can maintain a net performance advantage over OFDM in the considered setup. Beyond this unified Doppler-free analysis, we evaluate the joint impact of Doppler spread and TM on each waveform individually. We also investigate BER performance and show how coding can mitigate the resulting interference. This study therefore establishes a problem framework that motivates the development of future compensation and scheduling strategies for practical multi-user operation of delay-based waveforms.

A Novel Coexistence Scheme for OFDM and OTFS Waveforms for Uplink in 6G Networks

The upcoming sixth generation (6G) wireless networks are designed to support advanced applications that the current air interface based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) cannot accommodate, necessitating innovations in waveform design. Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) has emerged as a promising alternative, offering enhanced performance particularly in high-mobility channel environments. However, deploying fundamentally different waveforms over the same frequencies fails to exploit the mutual relationships between them. In this paper, a forward-compatible yet backward-compatible coexistence framework is proposed, where various OFDM waveform options are incorporated while seamlessly integrating OTFS within the same network. The proposed coexistence paradigm involves utilizing a specially designed spreading matrix in the delay-Doppler (DD) domain to process OTFS data. The matrix is tailored to establish orthogonality between OTFS and OFDM waveforms, effectively reducing cross-interference when both coexist within the same time-frequency (TF) resources. Our results demonstrate up to a 6 dB improvement in bit error rate (BER) performance for the OTFS waveform compared to other coexistence schemes. The proposed approach also shows greater interference resilience and approaches the upper bounds of achievable rates. By utilizing the full bandwidth and time duration, it enhances range and velocity resolutions, leading to improved sensing performance. These findings are supported by mathematical analysis and extensive simulations for uplink scenarios.

CP-Aware OFDM-Based OOK Signaling

This letter addresses the challenge of cyclic prefix (CP) problem in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based on-off keying (OOK) generation for low-power Internet of Things (IoT) systems. We propose a CP-aware waveform design that generates the OOK signal over the entire CP-OFDM symbol duration, potentially breaking subcarrier orthogonality after passing through the channel if the CP is not matched. To enable such a mechanism, OOK has to be generated independently and a modification to the existing OFDM-based OOK generation block is needed. Additionally, a block-wise time shift can be applied to minimize CP mismatch. Analytical discussions and simulations confirm that the resulting interference on legacy subcarriers remains controlled, while OOK detection performance significantly improves, albeit with trade-offs that should be carefully considered in practical deployments.

Experimental emulation for OTFS waveform RF-impairments

Orthogonal time-frequency space (OTFS) waveform exceeds the challenges that face orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in the high-mobility environment with high time-frequency dispersive channels. Since practical pulse shaping design and RF-impairments effects have a direct impact on waveform behavior, this paper investigates experimental implementation for practical pulse shaping design and RF-impairments that affect OTFS waveform performance and compares them to OFDM waveform as a benchmark. Firstly, the doubly-dispersive channel effect is analyzed, then an experimental framework is established for investigating the RF-impairments include non-linearity, Carrier frequency offset, I/Q-imbalances, DC-offset, and phase noise are considered. The experiments were conducted in a real indoor wireless environment using software-defined radio (SDR)based on the Keysight EXG X-Serie devices. The experimental results validate the accuracy of the theoretical results.

Effect of Prefix/Suffix Configurations on OTFS Systems with Rectangular Waveforms

Recently, orthogonal time-frequency-space (OTFS) modulation is used as a promising candidate waveform for high mobility communication scenarios. In practical transmission, OTFS with rectangular pulse shaping is implemented using different prefix/suffix configurations including reduced-cyclic prefix (RCP), full-CP (FCP), full-zero suffix (FZS), and reduced-zero padded (RZP). However, for each prefix/suffix type, different effective channel are seen at the receiver side resulting in dissimilar performance of the various OTFS configurations given a specific communication scenario. To fulfill this gap, in this paper, we study and model the effective channel in OTFS systems using various prefix/suffix configurations. Then, from the input-output relation analysis of the received signal, we show that the OTFS has a simple sparse structure for all prefix/suffix types, where the only difference is the phase term introduced when extending quasi-periodically in the delay-Doppler grid. We provide a comprehensive comparison between all OTFS types in terms of channel estimation/equalization complexity, symbol detection performance, power and spectral efficiencies, which helps in deciding the optimal prefix/suffix configuration for a specific scenario. Finally, we propose a novel OTFS structure namely reduced-FCP (RFCP) where the information of the CP block is decodable.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS): Eigenvalue Decomposition-Based Separate Channel Estimation

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has recently drawn significant attention in wireless communication technologies. However, identifying, modeling, and estimating the RIS channel in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems are considered challenging in recent studies. In this paper, a disassembled channel estimation framework for the RIS-MIMO system is proposed based on the eigenvalue decomposition (EVD) concept to separate the cascaded channel links and estimate each link separately. This estimation is based on modeling the RIS-MIMO channel as a keyhole MIMO system model. Numerical results show that the proposed estimation method has a low estimation time overhead while providing less estimation error.

Flexible Physical Layer Security for Joint Data and Pilots in Future Wireless Networks

In this work, novel physical layer security (PLS) schemes are proposed for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) to secure both data and pilots. The majority of previous studies focus on only securing the data without considering the security of the pilots used for channel estimation. However, the leakage of channel state information (CSI) from a legitimate node to an eavesdropper allows the latter to acquire knowledge about the channel of the legitimate nodes. To this end, we propose adaptive and flexible PLS algorithms which can 1) secure data, 2) secure pilots, and 3) jointly secure both data and pilots. Particularly, minimum-phase all-pass channel decomposition is exploited, where the proposed algorithms use the all-pass component to provide security without harming the performance of the legitimate user. In the analysis for data security, we evaluated the secrecy under correlated and uncorrelated eavesdropping channels via closed-form bit error rate (BER) formulas. For pilot security, we analyzed the normalized mean squared error (NMSE) performance of the estimated channel. The simulation results along with theoretical analysis demonstrate that the proposed algorithms can effectively enhance the communication secrecy of the overall system.

A General Framework for RIS-Aided mmWave Communication Networks: Channel Estimation and Mobile User Tracking

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has been widely discussed as new technology to improve wireless communication performance. Based on the unique design of RIS, its elements can reflect, refract, absorb, or focus the incoming waves toward any desired direction. These functionalities turned out to be a major solution to overcome millimeter-wave (mmWave)'s high propagation conditions including path attenuation and blockage. However, channel estimation in RIS-aided communication is still a major concern due to the passive nature of RIS elements, and estimation overhead that arises with multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. As a consequence, user tracking has not been analyzed yet. This paper is the first work that addresses channel estimation, beamforming, and user tracking under practical mmWave RIS-MIMO systems. By providing the mathematical relation of RIS design with a MIMO system, a three-stage framework is presented. Starting with estimating the channel between a base station (BS) and RIS using hierarchical beam searching, followed by estimating the channel between RIS and user using an iterative resolution algorithm. Lastly, a popular tracking algorithm is employed to track channel parameters between the RIS and the user. System analysis demonstrates the robustness and the effectiveness of the proposed framework in real-time scenarios.
