Hybridizable Discontinuous Galerkin Methods for Thermo-Poroelastic Systems

We propose a high-order hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) formulation for the fully dynamic, linear thermo-poroelasticity problem. The governing equations are formulated as a first-order hyperbolic system incorporating solid and fluid velocities, heat flux, effective stress, pore pressure, and temperature as state variables. We establish well-posedness of the continuous problem using semigroup theory and develop an energy-consistent HDG discretization. The method exploits computational advantages of HDG-including locality and static condensation-while maintaining energy conservation for the coupled system. We establish an $hp$-convergence analysis and support it with comprehensive numerical experiments, confirming the theoretical rates and showcasing the method's effectiveness for thermo-poroelastic wave propagation in heterogeneous media.

Hybridizable Discontinuous Galerkin Methods for Coupled Poro-Viscoelastic and Thermo-Viscoelastic Systems

This article presents a unified mathematical framework for modeling coupled poro-viscoelastic and thermo-viscoelastic phenomena, formulated as a system of first-order in time partial differential equations. The model describes the evolution of solid velocity, elastic and viscous stress tensors, and additional fields related to either fluid pressure or temperature, depending on the physical context. We develop a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for the numerical approximation of this coupled system, providing a high-order, stable discretization that efficiently handles the multiphysics nature of the problem. We establish stability analysis and derive optimal $hp$-error estimates for the semi-discrete formulation. The theoretical convergence rates are validated through comprehensive numerical experiments, demonstrating the method's accuracy and robustness across various test cases, including wave propagation in heterogeneous media with mixed viscoelastic properties.

An $hp$ Error Analysis of HDG for Dynamic Poroelasticity

This study introduces a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method for simulating low-frequency wave propagation in poroelastic media. We present a novel four-field variational formulation and establish its well-posedness and energy stability. Our \(hp\)-convergence analysis of the HDG method for spatial discretization is complemented by a Crank-Nicolson scheme for temporal discretization. Numerical experiments validate the theoretical convergence rates and demonstrate the effectiveness of the method in accurately capturing poroelastic dynamics.

An $hp$ Error Analysis of HDG for Linear Fluid-Structure Interaction

A variational formulation based on velocity and stress is developed for linear fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems. The well-posedness and energy stability of this formulation are established. To discretize the problem, a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method is employed. An $hp$-convergence analysis is performed for the resulting semi-discrete scheme. The temporal discretization is achieved via the Crank-Nicolson method, and the convergence properties of the fully discrete scheme are examined. Numerical experiments validate the theoretical results, confirming the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method.

A DG method for a stress formulation of the elasticity eigenproblem with strongly imposed symmetry

We introduce a pure--stress formulation of the elasticity eigenvalue problem with mixed boundary conditions. We propose an H(div)-based discontinuous Galerkin method that imposes strongly the symmetry of the stress for the discretization of the eigenproblem. Under appropriate assumptions on the mesh and the degree of polynomial approximation, we demonstrate the spectral correctness of the discrete scheme and derive optimal rates of convergence for eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. Finally, we provide numerical examples in two and three dimensions.

A new DG method for a pure--stress formulation of the Brinkman problem with strong symmetry

A strongly symmetric stress approximation is proposed for the Brinkman equations with mixed boundary conditions. The resulting formulation solves for the Cauchy stress using a symmetric interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method. Pressure and velocity are readily post-processed from stress, and a second post-process is shown to produce exactly divergence-free discrete velocities. We demonstrate the stability of the method with respect to a DG-energy norm and obtain error estimates that are explicit with respect to the coefficients of the problem. We derive optimal rates of convergence for the stress and for the post-processed variables. Moreover, under appropriate assumptions on the mesh, we prove optimal $L^2$-error estimates for the stress. Finally, we provide numerical examples in 2D and 3D.

Symmetric mixed discontinuous Galerkin methods for linear viscoelasticity

We propose and rigorously analyse semi- and fully discrete discontinuous Galerkin methods for an initial and boundary value problem describing inertial viscoelasticity in terms of elastic and viscoelastic stress components, and with mixed boundary conditions. The arbitrary-order spatial discretisation imposes strongly the symmetry of the stress tensor, and it is combined with a Newmark trapezoidal rule as time-advancing scheme. We establish stability and convergence properties, and the theoretical findings are further confirmed via illustrative numerical simulations in 2D and 3D.

Mixed-hybrid and mixed-discontinuous Galerkin methods for linear dynamical elastic-viscoelastic composite structures

We introduce and analyze a stress-based formulation for Zener's model in linear viscoelasticity. The method is aimed to tackle efficiently heterogeneous materials that admit purely elastic and viscoelastic parts in their composition. We write the mixed variational formulation of the problem in terms of a class of tensorial wave equation and obtain an energy estimate that guaranties the well-posedness of the problem through a standard Galerkin procedure. We propose and analyze mixed continuous and discontinuous Galerkin space discretizations of the problem and derive optimal error bounds for each semidiscrete solution in the corresponding energy norm.

A mixed finite element method with reduced symmetry for the standard model in linear viscoelasticity

We introduce and analyze a new mixed finite element method with reduced symmetry for the standard linear model in viscoelasticity. Following a previous approach employed for linear elastodynamics, the present problem is formulated as a second-order hyperbolic partial differential equation in which, after using the motion equation to eliminate the displacement unknown, the stress tensor remains as the main variable to be found. The resulting variational formulation is shown to be well-posed, and a class of $\text{H}(\text{div})$-conforming semi-discrete schemes is proved to be convergent. Then, we use the Newmark trapezoidal rule to obtain an associated fully discrete scheme, whose main convergence results are also established. Finally, numerical examples illustrating the performance of the method are reported.

Mixed discontinuous Galerkin approximation of the elasticity eigenproblem

We introduce a discontinuous Galerkin method for the mixed formulation of the elasticity eigenproblem with reduced symmetry. The analysis of the resulting discrete eigenproblem does not fit in the standard spectral approximation framework since the underlying source operator is not compact and the scheme is nonconforming. We show that the proposed scheme provides a correct approximation of the spectrum and prove asymptotic error estimates for the eigenvalues and the eigenfunctions. Finally, we provide several numerical tests to illustrate the performance of the method and confirm the theoretical results.

A discontinuous Galerkin method for the time harmonic eddy current problem

We introduce and analyze a discontinuous Galerkin method for a time-harmonic eddy current problem formulated in terms of the magnetic field. The scheme is obtained by putting together a DG method for the approximation of the vector field variable representing the magnetic field in the conductor and a DG method for the Laplace equation whose solution is a scalar magnetic potential in the insulator. The transmission conditions linking the two problems are taken into account weakly in the global discontinuous Galerkin scheme. We prove that the numerical method is uniformly stable and obtain quasi-optimal error estimates in the DG-energy norm.

Coupling DG-FEM and BEM for time harmonic eddy current problem

We introduce and analyze a discontinuous Galerkin FEM/BEM method for a time-harmonic eddy current problem written in terms of the magnetic field. We use nonconforming N\'ed\'elec finite elements on a partition of the interior domain coupled with continuous boundary elements on the transmission interface. We prove quasi-optimal error estimates in the energy norm.

Acoustic vibration problem for dissipative fluids

In this paper we analyze a finite element method for solving a quadratic eigenvalue problem derived from the acoustic vibration problem for a heterogeneous dissipative fluid. The problem is shown to be equivalent to the spectral problem for a noncompact operator and athorough spectral characterization is given. The numerical discretization of the problem is based on Raviart-Thomas finite elements. The method is proved to be free of spurious modes and to converge with optimal order. Finally, we report numerical tests which allow us to assess the performance of the method.

A mixed discontinuous Galerkin method for the time harmonic elasticity problem with reduced symmetry

The aim of this paper is to analyze a mixed discontinuous Galerkin discretization of the time-harmonic elasticity problem. The symmetry of the Cauchy stress tensor is imposed weakly, as in the traditional dual-mixed setting. We show that the discontinuous Galerkin scheme is well-posed and uniformly stable with respect to the mesh parameter $h$ and the Lam\'e coefficient $\lambda$. We also derive optimal a-priori error bounds in the energy norm. Several numerical tests are presented in order to illustrate the performance of the method and confirm the theoretical results.

New developments on the coupling of mixed-FEM and BEM for the three-dimensional Stokes problem

In this paper we consider the three dimensional exterior Stokes problem and study the solvability of the corresponding continuous and discrete formulations that arise from the coupling of a dual-mixed variational formulation with the boundary integral equation method. More precisely, after employing the incompressibility condition to eliminate the pressure, we consider the resulting velocity-stress-vorticity approach with different kind of boundary conditions on an annular bounded domain, and couple the underlying equations with either one or two boundary integral equations arising from the application of the usual and normal traces to the Green representation formula in the exterior unbounded region. As a result, we obtain saddle point operator equations, which are then analyzed by the well-known Babuska-Brezzi theory. We prove the well-posedness of the continuous formulations, identifying previously the space of solutions of the associated homogeneous problem, and specify explicit hypotheses to be satisfied by the finite element and boundary element subspaces in order to guarantee the stability of the respective Galerkin schemes. In particular, following a similar analysis given recently for the Laplacian, we are able to extend the classical Johnson & N\'ed\'elec procedure to the present case, without assuming any restrictive smoothness requirement on the coupling boundary, but only Lipschitz-continuity. In addition, and differently from known approaches for the elasticity problem, we are also able to extend the Costabel & Han coupling procedure to the 3D Stokes problem by providing a direct proof of the required coerciveness property, that is without argueing by contradiction, and by using the natural norm of each space instead of mesh-dependent norms. Finally, we briefly describe concrete examples of discrete spaces satisfying the aforementioned hypotheses.

Symmetric coupling of LDG-FEM and DG-BEM

We analyze a discontinuous Galerkin FEM-BEM scheme for a second order elliptic transmission problem posed in the three-dimensional space. The symmetric variational formulation is discretized by nonconforming Raviart-Thomas finite elements on a general partition of the interior domain coupled with discontinuous boundary elements on an independent quasi-uniform mesh of the transmission interface. We prove (almost) quasi-optimal convergence of the method and confirm the theory by a numerical experiment. In addition, we consider the case when continuous rather than discontinuous boundary elements are used.

A decoupled preconditioning technique for a mixed Stokes-Darcy model

We propose an efficient iterative method to solve the mixed Stokes-Dracy model for coupling fluid and porous media flow. The weak formulation of this problem leads to a coupled, indefinite, ill-conditioned and symmetric linear system of equations. We apply a decoupled preconditioning technique requiring only good solvers for the local mixed-Darcy and Stokes subproblems. We prove that the method is asymptotically optimal and confirm, with numerical experiments, that the performance of the preconditioners does not deteriorate on arbitrarily fine meshes.

Discontinuous Galerkin hp-BEM with quasi-uniform meshes

We present and analyze a discontinuous variant of the hp-version of the boundary element Galerkin method with quasi-uniform meshes. The model problem is that of the hypersingular integral operator on an (open or closed) polyhedral surface. We prove a quasi-optimal error estimate and conclude convergence orders which are quasi-optimal for the h-version with arbitrary degree and almost quasi-optimal for the p-version. Numerical results underline the theory.
