Lipschitz regularity for manifold-constrained ROF elliptic systems

We study a generalization of the manifold-valued Rudin-Osher-Fatemi (ROF) model, which involves an initial datum $f$ mapping from a curved compact surface with smooth boundary to a complete, connected and smooth $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold. We prove the existence and uniqueness of minimizers under curvature restrictions on the target and topological ones on the range of $f$. We obtain a series of regularity results on the associated PDE system of a relaxed functional with Neumann boundary condition. We apply these results to the ROF model to obtain Lipschitz regularity of minimizers without further requirements on the convexity of the boundary. Additionally, we provide variants of the regularity statement of independent interest: for 1-dimensional domains (related to signal denoising), local Lipschitz regularity (meaningful for image processing) and Lipschitz regularity for a version of the Mosolov problem coming from fluid mechanics.

Total variation flow of curves in Riemannian manifolds

We consider the functional of total variation of maps from an interval into a Riemannian submanifold of $\mathbb R^N$. We define a notion of strong solution to the system of equations corresponding to the $L^2$-gradient flow of this functional. We prove global existence of strong solutions for initial data of bounded variation. We show that the solutions satisfy a variational equality, and deduce uniqueness in the case of non-positive sectional curvature. We prove convergence of strong solutions to a constant map in finite time.

Weak solutions of Anisotropic (and crystalline) inverse mean curvature flow as limits of $p$-capacitary potentials

We construct weak solutions of the anisotropic inverse mean curvature flow (A-IMCF) under very mild assumptions both on the anisotropy (which is simply a norm in $\mathbb R^N$ with no ellip\-ticity nor smoothness requirements, in order to include the crystalline case) and on the initial data. By means of an approximation procedure introduced by Moser, our solutions are limits of anisotropic $p$-harmonic functions or $p$-capacitary functions (after a change of variable), and we get uniqueness both for the approximating solutions (i.e., uniqueness of $p$-capacitary functions) and the limiting ones. Our notion of weak solution still recovers variational and geometric definitions similar to those introduced by Huisken-Ilmanen, but requires to work within the broader setting of $BV$-functions. Despite of this, we still reach classical results like the continuity and exponential growth of perimeter, as well as outward minimizing properties of the sublevel sets. Moreover, by assuming the extra regularity given by an interior rolling ball condition (where a sliding Wulff shape plays the role of a ball), the solutions are shown to be continuous and satisfy Harnack inequalities. Finally, examples of explicit solutions are built.

Characterization of the subdifferential and minimizers for the anisotropic p-capacity

We obtain existence of minimizers for the $p$-capacity functional defined with respect to a centrally symmetric anisotropy for $1 < p<\infty$, including the case of a crystalline norm in $\mathbb R^N$. The result is obtained by a characterization of the corresponding subdifferential and it applies for unbounded domains of the form $\mathbb R^N \setminus \overlineΩ$ under mild regularity assumptions (Lipschitz-continuous boundary) and no convexity requirements on the bounded domain $Ω$. If we further assume an interior ball condition (where the Wulff shape plays the role of a ball), then any minimizer is shown to be Lipschitz continuous.

Anisotropic Chan-Vese segmentation

In this paper we study a variant to Chan-Vese image segmentation model with rectilinear anisotropy. We show existence of minimizers in the $2$-phases case and how they are related to the (anisotropic) Rudin-Osher-Fatemi denoising model (ROF). Our analysis shows that in the natural case of a piecewise constant on rectangles image (PCR function in short), there exists a minimizer of the Chan-Vese functional which is also piecewise constant on rectangles over the same grid that the one defined by the original image. In the multiphase case, we show that minimizers of the Chan-Vese multiphase functional also share this property in the case that the initial image is a PCR function. We also investigate a multiphase and anisotropic version of the Truncated ROF algorithm, and we compare the solutions given by this algorithm with minimizers of the multiphase anisotropic Chan-Vese functional.

Existence of solutions to a phase-field model of 3D-grain boundary motion governed by a regularized 1-harmonic type flow

In this paper we propose a quaternion formulation for the orientation variable in the three dimensional Kobayashi--Warren model for the dynamics of polycrystals. We obtain existence of solutions to the $L^2$-gradient descent flow of the constrained energy functional via several approximating problems. In particular, we use a Ginzburg-Landau type approach and some extra regularizations. Existence of solutions to the approximating problems is shown by the use of nonlinear semigroups. Coupled with good a-priori estimates, this leads to successive passages to the limit up to finally showing existence of solutions to the proposed model. Moreover, we also obtain a maximum principle for the orientation variable.

An augmented Lagrangian model for signal segmentation

In this paper, we provide a new insight to the two-phase signal segmentation problem. We propose an augmented Lagrangian variational model based on Chan-Vese's original one. By using both energy methods and PDE methods, we show, in the one dimensional case, that the set of minimizers to the proposed functional contains only binary functions and it coincides with the set of minimizers to Chan-Vese's one. This fact allows us to obtain two important features of the minimizers as a byproduct of our analysis. First of all, for a piecewise constant initial signal, the jump set of any minimizer is a subset of the jump set of the given signal. Secondly, all of the jump points of the minimizer belong to the same level set of the signal, in a multivalued sense. This last property permits to design a trivial algorithm for computing the minimizers.

Kobayashi--Warren--Carter type systems with nonhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary data for crystalline orientation

In this paper we study the Dirichlet problem for the Kobayashi--Warren--Carter system. This system of parabolic PDE's models the grain boundary motion in a polycrystal with a prescribed orientation at the boundary of the domain. We obtain global existence in time of energy-dissipative solutions. The regularity of the solutions as well as the energy-dissipation property permit us to derive the steady-state problem as the asymptotic in time limit of the system. We finally study the $ω$-limit set of the solutions; we completely characterize it in the one dimensional case, showing, in particular that orientations in the $ω$-limit set belong to thee space of SBV functions. In the two dimensional case, we give sufficient conditions for existence of radial symmetric piecewise constants solutions.

Nonlinear diffusion in transparent media

We consider a prototypical nonlinear parabolic equation whose flux has three distinguished features: it is nonlinear with respect to both the unknown and its gradient, it is homogeneous, and it depends only on the direction of the gradient. For such equation, we obtain existence and uniqueness of entropy solutions to the Dirichlet problem, the homogeneous Neumann problem, and the Cauchy problem. Qualitative properties of solutions, such as finite speed of propagation and the occurrence of waiting-time phenomena, with sharp bounds, are shown. We also discuss the formation of jump discontinuities both at the boundary of the solutions' support and in the bulk.

Regular 1-harmonic flow

We consider the 1-harmonic flow of maps from a bounded domain into a submanifold of a Euclidean space, i.e. the gradient flow of the total variation functional restricted to maps taking values in the manifold. We restrict ourselves to Lipschitz initial data. We prove uniqueness and, in the case of a convex domain, local existence of solutions to the flow equations. If the target manifold has non-positive sectional curvature or in the case that the datum is small, solutions are shown to exist globally and to become constant in finite time. We also consider the case where the domain is a compact Riemannian manifold without boundary, solving the homotopy problem for 1-harmonic maps under some assumptions.

Total variation denoising in $l^1$ anisotropy

We aim at constructing solutions to the minimizing problem for the variant of Rudin-Osher-Fatemi denoising model with rectilinear anisotropy and to the gradient flow of its underlying anisotropic total variation functional. We consider a naturally defined class of functions piecewise constant on rectangles (PCR). This class forms a strictly dense subset of the space of functions of bounded variation with an anisotropic norm. The main result shows that if the given noisy image is a PCR function, then solutions to both considered problems also have this property. For PCR data the problem of finding the solution is reduced to a finite algorithm. We discuss some implications of this result, for instance we use it to prove that continuity is preserved by both considered problems.

Nonlinear diffusion in transparent media: the resolvent equation

We consider the partial differential equation $$ u-f={\rm div}\left(u^m\frac{\nabla u}{|\nabla u|}\right) $$ with $f$ nonnegative and bounded and $m\in\mathbb{R}$. We prove existence and uniqueness of solutions for both the Dirichlet problem (with bounded and nonnegative {boundary datum}) and the homogeneous Neumann problem. Solutions, which a priori belong to a space of truncated bounded variation functions, are shown to have zero jump part with respect to the ${\mathcal H}^{N-1}$ Haussdorff measure. Results and proofs extend to more general nonlinearities.

Large solutions for the elliptic $1$-Laplacian with absorption

In this paper we give a general condition on the absorption term of the 1-Laplace elliptic equation for the existence of suitable large solutions. This condition can be considered as the correspondent Keller-Osserman condition for the $p$-Laplacian, in the case $p=1$. We also provide conditions that guarantee uniqueness for solutions to such problems.

Energy dissipative solutions to the Kobayashi-Warren-Carter system

In this paper we study a variational system of two parabolic PDEs, called the Kobayashi-Warren-Carter system, which models the grain boundary motion in a polycrystal. The focus of the study is the existence of solutions to this system which dissipate the associated energy functional. We obtain existence of this type of solutions via a suitable approximation of the energy functional with Laplacians and an extra regularization of the weighted total variation term of the energy. As a byproduct of this result, we also prove some $Γ$-convergence results concerning weighted total variations and the corresponding time-dependent cases. Finally, the regularity obtained for the solutions together with the energy dissipation property, permits us to completely characterize the $ω$-limit set of the solutions.

Optimal waiting time bounds for some flux-saturated diffusion equations

We consider the Cauchy problem for two prototypes of flux-saturated diffusion equations. In arbitrary space dimension, we give an optimal condition on the growth of the initial datum which discriminates between occurrence or nonoccurrence of a waiting time phenomenon. We also prove optimal upper bounds on the waiting time. Our argument is based on the introduction of suitable families of subsolutions and on a comparison result for a general class of flux-saturated diffusion equations.

Large solutions for nonlinear parabolic equations without absorption terms

In this paper we give a suitable notion of entropy solution of parabolic $p-$laplacian type equations with $1\leq p<2$ which blows up at the boundary of the domain. We prove existence and uniqueness of this type of solutions when the initial data is locally integrable (for $1<p<2$) or integrable (for $p=1$; i.e the Total Variation Flow case).

Rotationally symmetric p-harmonic flows from D^2 to S^2: local well-posedness and blow-up

We study the $p$-harmonic flow from the unit disk $D^2$ to the unit sphere $S^2$ under rotational symmetry. We show that the Dirichlet problem with constant boundary conditions is locally well-posed in the class of classical solutions and we also give a sufficient criterion, in terms of the boundary condition, for the derivative of the solutions to blow-up in finite time.

Rotationally symmetric p-harmonic maps from D^2 to S^2

We consider rotationally symmetric $p$-harmonic maps from the unit disk $D^2\subset\real^2$ to the unit sphere $S^2\subset\real^3$, subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions and with $1<p<\infty$. We show that the associated energy functional admits a unique minimizer which is of class $C^{\infty}$ in the interior and $C^1$ up to the boundary. We also show that there exist infinitely many global solutions to the associated Euler-Lagrange equation and we completely characterize them.
