Transition redshift in $f(T)$ cosmology and observational constraints

We extract constraints on the transition redshift $z_{tr}$, determining the onset of cosmic acceleration, predicted by an effective cosmographic construction, in the framework of $f(T)$ gravity. In particular, employing cosmography we obtain bounds on the viable $f(T)$ forms and their derivatives. Since this procedure is model independent, as long as the scalar curvature is fixed, we are able to determine intervals for $z_{tr}$. In this way we guarantee that the Solar-System constraints are preserved and moreover we extract bounds on the transition time and the free parameters of the scenario. We find that the transition redshifts predicted by $f(T)$ cosmology, although compatible with the standard $Λ$CDM predictions, are slightly smaller. Finally, in order to obtain observational constraints on $f(T)$ cosmology, we perform a Monte Carlo fitting using supernova data, involving the most recent union 2.1 data set.

Generalized energy conditions in Extended Theories of Gravity

Theories of physics can be considered viable if the initial value problem and the energy conditions are formulated self-consistently. The former allow a uniquely determined dynamical evolution of the system, and the latter guarantee that causality is preserved and that "plausible" physical sources have been considered. In this work, we consider the further degrees of freedom related to curvature invariants and scalar fields in Extended Theories of Gravity (ETG). These new degrees of freedom can be recast as effective perfect fluids that carry different meanings with respect to the standard matter fluids generally adopted as sources of the field equations. It is thus somewhat misleading to apply the standard general relativistic energy conditions to this effective energy-momentum, as the latter contains the matter content and a geometrical quantity, which arises from the ETG considered. Here, we explore this subtlety, extending on previous work, in particular, to cases with the contracted Bianchi identities with diffeomorphism invariance and to cases with generalized explicit curvature-matter couplings, which imply the non-conservation of the energy-momentum tensor. Furthermore, we apply the analysis to specific ETGs, such as scalar-tensor gravity, $f(R)$ gravity and modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity. Interesting results appear such as matter that may exhibit unusual thermodynamical features, for instance, and gravity that retains its attractive character in the presence of negative pressures; or alternatively, we verify that repulsive gravity may occur for standard matter.

Unifying inflation with late-time acceleration in BIonic system

In this research, we propose a new model that allows to unify inflation, deceleration and acceleration phases of expansion history in BIonic system. In this model, in the beginning, there have been $k$ black fundamental strings that transited to the BIon configuration at a corresponding point. At this point, two universe brane and universe antibrane have been created, interacted with each other via one wormhole and inflated. With decreasing temperature, the energy of this wormhole flowed into universe branes and lead to inflation. After a short time, wormhole died, inflation ended and deceleration epoch started. With approaching two universe brane and antibrane together, tachyon was born, grew and caused creation of one new wormhole. At this time, two universe brane and antibrane connected again and late-time acceleration era of the universe began. We compare our model with previous unified phantom model and observational data and obtain some cosmological parameters like temperature in terms of time. We also find that deceleration parameter is negative during inflation and late-time acceleration epochs and positive during deceleration era. This means that our model is consistent with previous prediction and cosmological experiments.

Noether Symmetry Approach for teleparallel-curvature cosmology

We consider curvature-teleparallel $F(R,T)$ gravity, where the gravitational Lagrangian density is given by an arbitrary function of the Ricci scalar $R$ and the torsion scalar $T$. Using the Noether Symmetry Approach, we show that the functional form of the $F(R, T)$ function, can be determined by the presence of symmetries . Furthermore, we obtain exact solutions through to the presence of conserved quantities and the reduction of cosmological dynamical system. Example of particular cosmological models are considered.

Cosmological inflation in $F(R,\mathcal{G})$ gravity

Cosmological inflation is discussed in the framework of $F(R,{\cal G})$ gravity where $F$ is a generic function of the curvature scalar $R$ and the Gauss-Bonnet topological invariant $\cal G$. The main feature that emerges in this analysis is the fact that this kind of theory can exhaust all the curvature budget related to curvature invariants without considering derivatives of $R,$ $R_{μν}$, $R^λ_{σμν}$ etc. in the action. Cosmological dynamics results driven by two effective masses (lenghts) related to the $R$ scalaron and the $\cal G$ scalaron working respectively at early and very early epochs of cosmic evolution. In this sense, a double inflationary scenario naturally emerges.

Hojman Symmetry Approach for Scalar-Tensor Cosmology

Scalar-tensor Cosmologies can be dealt under the standard of the Hojman conservation theorem that allows to fix the form of the coupling $F(ϕ)$, of the potential $V(ϕ)$ and to find out exact solutions for related cosmological models. Specifically, the existence of a symmetry transformation vector for the equations of motion gives rise to a Hojman conserved quantity on the corresponding minisuperpace and exact solutions for the cosmic scale factor $a$ and the scalar field $ϕ$ can be achieved. In particular, we take advantage of the fact that minimally coupled solutions, previously obtained in the Einstein frame, can be conformally transformed in non-minimally coupled solutions in the Jordan frame. Some physically relevant examples are worked out.

Selection effects in Gamma Ray Bursts correlations: consequences on the ratio between GRB and star formation rates

Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) visible up to very high redshift have become attractive targets as potential new distance indicators. It is still not clear whether the relations proposed so far originate from an unknown GRB physics or result from selection effects. We investigate this issue in the case of the $L_X-T^*_a$ correlation (hereafter LT) between the X-ray luminosity $L_X (T_a)$ at the end of the plateau phase, $T_a$, and the rest frame time $T^{*}_a$. We devise a general method to build mock data sets starting from a GRB world model and taking into account selection effects on both time and luminosity. This method shows how not knowing the efficiency function could influence the evaluation of the intrinsic slope of any correlation and the GRB density rate. We investigate biases (small offsets in slope or normalization) that would occur in the LT relation as a result of truncations, possibly present in the intrinsic distributions of $L_X$ and $T^*_a$. We compare these results with the ones in Dainotti et al. (2013) showing that in both cases the intrinsic slope of the LT correlation is $\approx -1.0$. This method is general, therefore relevant to investigate if any other GRB correlation is generated by the biases themselves. Moreover, because the farthest GRBs and star-forming galaxies probe the reionization epoch, we evaluate the redshift-dependent ratio $Ψ(z)=(1+z)^α$ of the GRB rate to star formation rate (SFR). We found a modest evolution $-0.2\leq α\leq 0.5$ consistent with Swift GRB afterglow plateau in the redshift range $0.99<z<9.4$.

A bridge between unified cosmic history by $f(R)$-gravity and BIonic system

Recently, the cosmological deceleration-acceleration transition redshift in $f(R)$ gravity has been considered in order to address consistently the problem of cosmic evolution. It is possible to show that the deceleration parameter changes sign at a given redshift according to observational data. Furthermore, a $f(R)$ gravity cosmological model can be constructed in brane-antibrane system starting from the very early universe and accounting for the cosmological redshift at all phases of cosmic history, from inflation to late time acceleration. Here we propose a $f(R)$ model where transition redshifts correspond to inflation-deceleration and deceleration-late time acceleration transitions starting froma BIon system. At the point where the universe was born, due to the transition of $k$ black fundamental strings to the BIon configuration, the redshift is approximately infinity and decreases with reducing temperature ($z\sim T^{2}$). The BIon is a configuration in flat space of a universe-brane and a parallel anti-universe-brane connected by a wormhole. This wormhole is a channel for flowing energy from extra dimensions into our universe, occurring at inflation and decreasing with redshift as $z\sim T^{4+1/7}$. Dynamics consists with the fact that the wormhole misses its energy and vanishes as soon as inflation ends and deceleration begins. Approaching two universe branes together, a tachyon is originated, it grows up and causes the formation of a wormhole. We show that, in the framework of $f(R)$ gravity, the cosmological redshift depends on the tachyonic potential and has a significant decrease at deceleration-late time acceleration transition point ($z\sim T^{2/3}$). As soon as today acceleration approaches, the redshift tends to zero and the cosmological model reduces to the standard $Λ$CDM cosmology.

Noether Symmetry Approach for Dirac-Born-Infeld Cosmology

We consider the Noether Symmetry Approach for a cosmological model derived from a tachyon scalar field $T$ with a Dirac-Born-Infeld Lagrangian and a potential $V(T)$. Furthermore, we assume a coupled canonical scalar field $ϕ$ with an arbitrary interaction potential $B(T,ϕ)$. Exact solutions are derived consistent with the accelerated behavior of cosmic fluid.

Effective field theory from modified gravity with massive modes

Massive gravitational modes in effective field theories can be recovered by extending General Relativity and taking into account generic functions of the curvature invariants, not necessarily linear in the Ricci scalar R. In particular, adopting the minimal extension of f(R) gravity, an effective field theory with massive modes is straightforwardly recovered. This approach allows to evade shortcomings like ghosts and discontinuities if a suitable choice of expansion parameters is performed.

Extended Theories of Gravity with Generalized Energy Conditions

We address the problem of the energy conditions in modified gravity taking into account the additional degrees of freedom related to scalar fields and curvature invariants. The latter are usually interpreted as generalized {\it geometrical fluids} that differ in meaning with respect to the matter fluids generally considered as sources of the field equations. In extended gravity theories the curvature terms are encapsulated in a tensor $H^{ab}$ and a coupling $g(Ψ^i)$ that can be recast as effective Einstein field equations, with corrections to the energy-momentum tensor of matter. The formal validity of standard energy inequalities does not assure basic requirements such as the attractive nature of gravity, so we argue that the energy conditions have to be considered in a wider sense.

Extreme neutron stars from Extended Theories of Gravity

We discuss neutron stars with strong magnetic mean fields in the framework of Extended Theories of Gravity. In particular, we take into account models derived from $f(R)$ and $f(\cal G)$ extensions of General Relativity where functions of the Ricci curvature invariant $R$ and the Gauss-Bonnet invariant ${\cal G}$ are respectively considered. Dense matter in magnetic mean field, generated by magnetic properties of particles, is described by assuming a model with three meson fields and baryons octet. As result, the considerable increasing of maximal mass of neutron stars can be achieved by cubic corrections in $f(R)$ gravity. In principle, massive stars with $M> 4 M_{\odot}$ can be obtained. On the other hand, stable stars with high strangeness fraction (with central densities $ρ_{c}\sim 1.5-2.0$ GeV/fm$^{3}$) are possible considering quadratic corrections of $f(\cal {G})$ gravity. The magnetic field strength in the star center is of order $6-8\times 10^{18}$ G. In general, we can say that other branches of massive neutron stars are possible considering the extra pressure contributions coming from gravity extensions. Such a feature can constitute both a probe for alternative theories and a way out to address anomalous self-gravitating compact systems.

Chaos Removal in the $R+qR^2$ gravity: the Mixmaster model

We study the asymptotic dynamics of the Mixmaster Universe, near the cosmological singularity, considering $f(R)$ gravity up to a quadratic corrections in the Ricci scalar $R$. The analysis is performed in the scalar-tensor framework and adopting Misner-Chitré-like variables to describe the Mixmaster Universe, whose dynamics resembles asymptotically a billiard-ball in a given domain of the half-Poincaré space. The form of the potential well depends on the spatial curvature of the model and on the particular form of the self-interacting scalar field potential. We demonstrate that the potential walls determine an open domain in the configuration region, allowing the point-Universe to reach the absolute of the considered Lobachevsky space. In other words, we outline the existence of a stable final Kasner regime in the Mixmaster evolution, implying the chaos removal near the cosmological singularity. The relevance of the present issue relies both on the general nature of the considered dynamics, allowing its direct extension to the BKL conjecture too, as well as the possibility to regard the considered modified theory of gravity as the first correction to the Einstein-Hilbert action as a Taylor expansion of a generic function $f(R)$ (as soon as a cut-off on the space-time curvature takes place).

Cosmographic transition redshift in $f(R)$ gravity

We propose a strategy to infer the transition redshift $z_{da}$, which characterizes the passage through the universe decelerated to accelerated phases, in the framework $f(R)$ gravities. To this end, we numerically reconstruct $f(z)$, i.e. the corresponding $f(R)$ function re-expressed in terms of the redshift $z$ and we show how to match $f(z)$ with cosmography. In particular, we relate $f(z)$ and its derivatives to the cosmographic coefficients, i.e. $H_0, q_0$ and $j_0$ and demonstrate that its corresponding evolution may be framed by means of an effective logarithmic dark energy term $Ω_X$, slightly departing from the case of a pure cosmological constant. Afterwards, we show that our model predicts viable transition redshift constraints, which agree with $Λ$CDM. To do so, we compute the corresponding $z_{da}$ in terms of cosmographic outcomes and find that $z_{da}\leq1$. Finally, we reproduce an effective $f(z)$ and show that this class of models is fairly well compatible with present-time data. To do so, we get numerical constraints employing Monte Carlo fits with the Union 2.1 supernova survey and with the Hubble measurement data set.

Connecting early and late universe by $f(R)$ gravity

Inflation and dark energy are two of the most relevant aspects of modern cosmology. These different epochs provide the universe is passing through accelerated phases soon after the Big-Bang and at present stage of its evolution. In this review paper, we discuss that both eras can be, in principle, described by a geometric picture, under the standard of $f(R)$ gravity. We give the fundamental physics motivations and outline the main ingredients of $f(R)$ inflation, quintessence and cosmography. This wants to be a quick summary of $f(R)$ paradigm without claiming of completeness.

External stability for Spherically Symmetric Solutions in Lorentz Breaking Massive Gravity

We discuss spherically symmetric solutions for point-like sources in Lorentz-breaking massive gravity theories. This analysis is valid for Stückelberg's effective field theory formulation, for Lorentz Breaking Massive Bigravity and general extensions of gravity leading to an extra term $-Sr^γ$ added to the Newtonian potential. The approach consists in analyzing the stability of the geodesic equations, at the first order (deviation equation). The main result is a strong constrain in the space of parameters of the theories. This motivates higher order analysis of geodesic perturbations in order to understand if a class of spherically symmetric Lorentz-breaking massive gravity solutions, for self-gravitating systems, exists. Stable and phenomenologically acceptable solutions are discussed in the no-trivial case $S\neq 0$.

Precision cosmology with Padé rational approximations: theoretical predictions versus observational limits

We propose a novel approach for parameterizing the luminosity distance, based on the use of rational "Padé" approximations. This new technique extends standard Taylor treatments, overcoming possible convergence issues at high redshifts plaguing standard cosmography. Indeed, we show that Padé expansions enable us to confidently use data over a larger interval with respect to the usual Taylor series. To show this property in detail, we propose several Padé expansions and we compare these approximations with cosmic data, thus obtaining cosmographic bounds from the observable universe for all cases. In particular, we fit Padé luminosity distances with observational data from different uncorrelated surveys. We employ union 2.1 supernova data, baryonic acoustic oscillation, Hubble space telescope measurements and differential age data. In so doing, we also demonstrate that the use of Padé approximants can improve the analyses carried out by introducing cosmographic auxiliary variables, i.e. a standard technique usually employed in cosmography in order to overcome the divergence problem. Moreover, for any drawback related to standard cosmography, we emphasize possible resolutions in the framework of Padé approximants. In particular, we investigate how to reduce systematics, how to overcome the degeneracy between cosmological coefficients, how to treat divergences and so forth. As a result, we show that cosmic bounds are actually refined through the use of Padé treatments and the thus derived best values of the cosmographic parameters show slight departures from the standard cosmological paradigm. Although all our results are perfectly consistent with the $Λ$CDM model, evolving dark energy components different from a pure cosmological constant are not definitively ruled out.

Quantum Tests of the Einstein Equivalence Principle with the STE-QUEST Space Mission

We present in detail the scientific objectives in fundamental physics of the Space-Time Explorer and QUantum Equivalence Space Test (STE-QUEST) space mission. STE-QUEST was pre-selected by the European Space Agency together with four other missions for the cosmic vision M3 launch opportunity planned around 2024. It carries out tests of different aspects of the Einstein Equivalence Principle using atomic clocks, matter wave interferometry and long distance time/frequency links, providing fascinating science at the interface between quantum mechanics and gravitation that cannot be achieved, at that level of precision, in ground experiments. We especially emphasize the specific strong interest of performing equivalence principle tests in the quantum regime, i.e. using quantum atomic wave interferometry. Although STE-QUEST was finally not selected in early 2014 because of budgetary and technological reasons, its science case was very highly rated. Our aim is to expose that science to a large audience in order to allow future projects and proposals to take advantage of the STE-QUEST experience.
