Equivalence between Palatini and metric formalisms of f(R)-gravity by divergence free current

The equivalence between metric and Palatini formalisms in f(R)-gravity can be achieved in the general context of theories with divergence free current. This equivalence is a necessary result of a symmetry which is included in a particular conservation equation of the current. In fact the conservation equation, by an appropriate redefinition of the introduced auxiliary field, may be encoded in a massless scalar field equation.

Axially symmetric solutions in f(R)-gravity

Axially symmetric solutions for f (R)-gravity can be derived starting from exact spherically sym- metric solutions achieved by Noether symmetries. The method takes advantage of a complex coordi- nate transformation previously developed by Newman and Janis in General Relativity. An example is worked out to show the general validity of the approach. The physical properties of the solution are also considered.

A cosmological independent calibration of the Ep,i-Eiso correlation for Gamma Ray Bursts

The relation connecting the emitted isotropic energy and the rest-frame peak energy of the \nuFνspectra of Gamma-Ray Bursts (the Amati relation), strictly depends on the cosmological model, so we need a method to obtain an independent calibration of it. Using the Union Supernovae Ia catalog, we obtain a cosmographic luminosity distance in the y-redshift and demonstrate that this parametrization approximates very well the fiducial standard comsomlogical model \LambdaCDM. Furthermore, by this cosmographic luminosity distance dl, it is possible to achieve the Amati relation independent on the cosmological model. The cosmographic Amati relation that we obtain agrees, in the errors, with other cosmological-independent calibrations proposed in the literature. This could be considered a good indication in view to obtain standard candles by Gamma-Ray Bursts Key words. Gamma rays : bursts - Cosmology

f(R) cosmology by Noether's symmetry

A general approach to find out exact cosmological solutions in f(R)-gravity is discussed. Instead of taking into account phenomenological models, we assume, as a physical criterium, the existence of Noether symmetries in the cosmological f(R) Lagrangian. As a result, the presence of such symmetries selects viable models and allow to solve the equations of motion. We discuss also the case in which no Noether charge is present but general criteria can be used to achieve solutions.

Massive, massless and ghost modes of gravitational waves from higher-order gravity

We linearize the field equations for higher order theories that contain scalar invariants other than the Ricci scalar. We find that besides a massless spin-2 field (the standard graviton), the theory contains also spin-0 and spin-2 massive modes with the latter being, in general, ghost modes. Then, we investigate the possible detectability of such additional polarization modes of a stochastic gravitational wave by ground-based and space interferometric detectors. Finally, we extend the formalism of the cross-correlation analysis, including the additional polarization modes, and calculate the detectable energy density of the spectrum for a stochastic background of the relic gravity waves that corresponds to our model. For the situation considered here, we find that these massive modes are certainly of interest for direct detection by the LISA experiment.

PPN limit and cosmological gravitational waves as tools to constrain f(R)-gravity

We discuss the PPN Solar-System constraints and the GW stochastic background considering some recently proposed $f(R)$ gravity models which satisfy both cosmological and stability conditions. Using the definition of PPN-parameters $γ$ and $β$ in terms of $f(R)$-models and the definition of scalar GWs, we compare and discuss if it is possible to search for parameter ranges of $f(R)$-models working at Solar System and GW stochastic background scale.

Relativistic orbits and Gravitational Waves from gravitomagnetic corrections

Corrections to the relativistic theory of orbits are discussed considering higher order approximations induced by gravitomagnetic effects. Beside the standard periastron effect of General Relativity (GR), a new nutation effect was found due to the ${\displaystyle c^{-3}}$ orbital correction. According to the presence of that new nutation effect we studied the gravitational waveforms emitted through the capture in a gravitational field of a massive black hole (MBH) of a compact object (neutron star (NS) or BH) via the quadrupole approximation. We made a numerical study to obtain the emitted gravitational wave (GW) amplitudes. We conclude that the effects we studied could be of interest for the future space laser interferometric GW antenna LISA.

Stochastic Background of Relic Scalar Gravitational Waves tuned by Extended Gravity

A stochastic background of relic gravitational waves is achieved by the so called adiabatically-amplified zero-point fluctuations process derived from early inflation. It provides a distinctive spectrum of relic gravitational waves. In the framework of scalar-tensor gravity, we discuss the scalar modes of gravitational waves and the primordial production of this scalar component which is generated beside tensorial one. Then we analyze different viable $f(R)$-gravities towards the Solar System tests and stochastic gravitational waves background. The aim is to achive experimental bounds for the theory at local and cosmological scales in order to select models capable of addressing the accelerating cosmological expansion without cosmological constant but evading the weak field constraints. It is demonstrated that viable $f(R)$-gravities under consideration not only satisfy the local tests, but additionally, pass the PPN-and stochastic gravitational waves bounds for large classes of parameters.

On the well formulation of the Initial Value Problem of metric--affine $f(R)$-gravity

We study the well formulation of the initial value problem of f(R)-gravity in the metric-affine formalism. The problem is discussed in vacuo and in presence of perfect-fluid matter, Klein-Gordon and Yang-Mills fields. Adopting Gaussian normal coordinates, it can be shown that the problem is always well-formulated. Our results refute some criticisms to the viability of f(R)-gravity recently appeared in literature.

Gravitational waves about curved backgrounds: a consistency analysis in de Sitter spacetime

Gravitational waves are considered as metric perturbations about a curved background metric, rather than the flat Minkowski metric since several situations of physical interest can be discussed by this generalization. In this case, when the de Donder gauge is imposed, its preservation under infinitesimal spacetime diffeomorphisms is guaranteed if and only if the associated covector is ruled by a second-order hyperbolic operator which is the classical counterpart of the ghost operator in quantum gravity. In such a wave equation, the Ricci term has opposite sign with respect to the wave equation for Maxwell theory in the Lorenz gauge. We are, nevertheless, able to relate the solutions of the two problems, and the algorithm is applied to the case when the curved background geometry is the de Sitter spacetime. Such vector wave equations are studied in two different ways: i) an integral representation, ii) through a solution by factorization of the hyperbolic equation. The latter method is extended to the wave equation of metric perturbations in the de Sitter spacetime. This approach is a step towards a general discussion of gravitational waves in the de Sitter spacetime and might assume relevance in cosmology in order to study the stochastic background emerging from inflation.

Massive gravitational waves from f(R) theories of gravity: Potential detection with LISA

This letter is a generalization of previous results on gravitational waves (GWs) from f(R) theories of gravity. In some previous papers, particular f(R) theories have been linearized for the first time in the literature. Now, the process is further generalized, showing that every f(R) theory can be linearized producting a third massive mode of gravitational radiation. In this framework, previous results are particular cases of the more general problem that is discussed in this letter. The potential detectability of such massive GWs with LISA is also discussed with the auxilium of longitudinal response functions.

Accelerating cosmologies from non-local higher-derivative gravity

We study accelerating cosmological solutions of a general class of non-linear gravities which depend on Gauss-Bonnet and other higher derivative invariants. To achieve this goal a local formulation with auxiliary scalars for arbitrary higher-derivative non-local gravity is developed. It is demonstrated that non-local Gauss-Bonnet gravity can be reduced, in the local formulation, to a model of string-inspired scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. A natural unification, in the theory here developed, of the early-time inflation epoch with a late-time acceleration stage can also be realized.

Gravitational waves from stellar encounters

The emission of gravitational waves from a system of massive objects interacting on elliptical, hyperbolic and parabolic orbits is studied in the quadrupole approximation. Analytical expressions are then derived for the gravitational wave luminosity, the total energy output and gravitational radiation amplitude. A crude estimate of the expected number of events towards peculiar targets (i.e. globular clusters) is also given. In particular, the rate of events per year is obtained for the dense stellar cluster at the Galactic Center.

Solar system and equivalence principle constraints on f(R) gravity by chameleon approach

We study constraints on f(R) dark energy models from solar system experiments combined with experiments on the violation of equivalence principle. When the mass of an equivalent scalar field degree of freedom is heavy in a region with high density, a spherically symmetric body has a thin-shell so that an effective coupling of the fifth force is suppressed through a chameleon mechanism. We place experimental bounds on the cosmologically viable models recently proposed in literature which have an asymptotic form f(R)=R-lambda R_c [1-(R_c/R)^{2n}] in the regime R >> R_c. From the solar-system constraints on the post-Newtonian parameter gamma, we derive the bound n>0.5, whereas the constraints from the violations of weak and strong equivalence principles give the bound n>0.9. This allows a possibility to find the deviation from the LambdaCDM cosmological model. For the model f(R)=R-lambda R_c(R/R_c)^p with 0<p<1 the severest constraint is found to be p<10^{-10}, which shows that this model is hardly distinguishable from the LambdaCDM cosmology.

Tuning the stochastic background of gravitational waves with theory and observations

In this this paper the stochastic background of gravitational waves (SBGWs) is analyzed with the auxilium of the WMAP data. We emphasize that, in general, in previous works in the literature about the SBGWs, old COBE data were used. After this, we want to face the problem of how the SBGWs and f(R) gravity can be related, showing, vice versa, that a revealed SBGWs could be a powerly probe for a given theory of gravity. In this way, it will also be shown that the conformal treatment of SBGWs can be used to parametrize in a natural way f(R) theories.

Chiral Structures Under the Standard of Orthogonal Groups

General features of microscopic and macroscopic chiral structures can be discussed under the standard of orthogonal group theory. Configuration space of systems, not physical space, is taken into account. This change of perspective allows to overcome traditional shortcomings related to true and false chirality, statistical realization of mirror images, classification of objects as more or less chiral. From this viewpoint, a chiral object is a physical system whose configurations are described by the O(N) algebra in an abstract N-dimensional space. A quantum mechanical interpretation is straightforward due to the fact that combinations of chiral states give rise to parity states which can be interpreted as energy eigenstates.
