Exploiting the Einstein Telescope to solve the Hubble tension

We probe four cosmological models which, potentially, can solve the Hubble tension according to the dark energy equation of state. In this context, we demonstrate that the Einstein Telescope is capable of achieving a relative accuracy below $1\%$ on the Hubble constant independently of the specific dark energy model. We firstly build mock catalogs containing gravitational wave events for one, five and ten years of observations, and above Signal-to-Noise Ratio equal to nine. From these catalogs, we extract the events which are most likely associated with possible electromagnetic counterpart detected by THESEUS. Finally, we select four dark energy models, namely a non-flat $ω$CDM, an interacting dark energy, an emergent dark energy, and a time varying gravitational constant model, to forecast the precision down to which the Einstein Telescope can bound the corresponding cosmological parameters. We foresee that the Hubble constant is always constrained with less than $1\%$ uncertainty, thereby offering a potential solution to the Hubble tension. The accuracy on the other cosmological parameters is at most comparable with the one currently obtained using multiple probes, except for the emergent dark energy model for which the Einstein Telescope alone will be able to improve the current limits by more than one order of magnitude.

Quasars: standard candles up to z=7.5 with the precision of Supernovae Ia

Currently, the $Λ$ Cold Dark Matter model, which relies on the existence of cold dark matter and a cosmological constant $Λ$, best describes the Universe. However, we lack information in the high-redshift ($z$) region between Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) (up to $z=2.26$) and the Cosmic Microwave Background ($z=1100$), an interval crucial to test cosmological models and their possible evolution. We have defined a sample of 983 Quasars up to $z=7.54$ with reduced intrinsic dispersion $δ=0.007$ which determines the matter density parameter $Ω_M$ with the same precision of SNe Ia. Although previous analysis have been used Quasars as cosmological tools (e.g. Risaliti and Lusso 2019), this is the first time that high-redshift sources, in this case Quasars, as standalone cosmological probes yield such tight constraints on $Ω_M$. Our results show the importance of correcting cosmological relationships for selection biases and redshift evolution and how the choice of a golden sample reduces considerably the intrinsic scatter. This proves the reliability of Quasars as standard cosmological candles.

Modified Gravity and Cosmology: An Update by the CANTATA Network

General Relativity and the $Λ$CDM framework are currently the standard lore and constitute the concordance paradigm. Nevertheless, long-standing open theoretical issues, as well as possible new observational ones arising from the explosive development of cosmology the last two decades, offer the motivation and lead a large amount of research to be devoted in constructing various extensions and modifications. All extended theories and scenarios are first examined under the light of theoretical consistency, and then are applied to various geometrical backgrounds, such as the cosmological and the spherical symmetric ones. Their predictions at both the background and perturbation levels, and concerning cosmology at early, intermediate and late times, are then confronted with the huge amount of observational data that astrophysics and cosmology are able to offer recently. Theories, scenarios and models that successfully and efficiently pass the above steps are classified as viable and are candidates for the description of Nature. This work is a Review of the recent developments in the fields of gravity and cosmology, presenting the state of the art, high-lighting the open problems, and outlining the directions of future research. Its realization was performed in the framework of the COST European Action ``Cosmology and Astrophysics Network for Theoretical Advances and Training Actions''.

Reducing the uncertainty on the Hubble constant up to 35\% with an improved statistical analysis: different best-fit likelihoods for Supernovae Ia, Baryon Acoustic Oscillations, Quasars, and Gamma-Ray Bursts

Cosmological models and their parameters are widely debated, especially about whether the current discrepancy between the values of the Hubble constant, $H_{0}$, obtained by type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), and the Planck data from the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation could be alleviated when alternative cosmological models are considered. Thus, combining high-redshift probes, such as Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) and Quasars (QSOs), together with Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) and SNe Ia is important to assess the viability of these alternative models and if they can cast further light on the Hubble tension. In this work, for GRBs, we use a 3-dimensional relation between the peak prompt luminosity, the rest-frame time at the end of the X-ray plateau, and its corresponding luminosity in X-rays: the 3D Dainotti fundamental plane relation. Regarding QSOs, we use the Risaliti-Lusso relation among the UV and X-ray luminosities for a sample of 2421 sources. We correct both the QSO and GRB relations by accounting for selection and evolutionary effects with a reliable statistical method. We here use both the traditional Gaussian likelihoods ($\cal L_G$) and the new best-fit likelihoods ($\cal L_N$) to infer cosmological parameters of a non-flat $Λ$CDM and flat $w$CDM models. We obtain for all the parameters reduced uncertainties, up to $35\%$ for $H_{0}$, when applying the new $\cal L_N$ likelihoods in place of the Gaussian ones. Our results remain consistent with a flat $Λ$CDM model, although with a shift of the dark energy parameter $w$ toward $w<-1$ and a curvature density parameter toward $Ω_k<0$.

The energy-momentum complex in non-local gravity

In General Relativity, the issue of defining the gravitational energy contained in a given spatial region is still unresolved, except for particular cases of localized objects where the asymptotic flatness holds for a given spacetime. In principle, a theory of gravity is not self-consistent, if the whole energy content is not uniquely defined in a specific volume. Here we generalize the Einstein gravitational energy-momentum pseudotensor to non-local theories of gravity where analytic functions of the non-local integral operator $\Box^{-1}$ are taken into account. We apply the Noether theorem to a gravitational Lagrangian, supposed invariant under the one-parameter group of diffeomorphisms, that is, the infinitesimal rigid translations. The invariance of non-local gravitational action under global translations leads to a locally conserved Noether current, and thus, to the definition of a gravitational energy-momentum pseudotensor, which is an affine object transforming like a tensor under affine transformations. Furthermore, the energy-momentum complex remains locally conserved, thanks to the non-local contracted Bianchi identities. The continuity equations for the gravitational pseudotensor and the energy-momentum complex, taking into account both gravitational and matter components, can be derived. Finally, the weak field limit of pseudotensor is performed to lowest order in metric perturbation in view of astrophysical applications.

Ghost and Laplacian Instabilities in the Teleparallel Horndeski Gravity

Teleparallel geometry offers a platform on which to build up theories of gravity where torsion rather than curvature mediates gravitational interaction. The teleparallel analogue of Horndeski gravity is an approach to teleparallel geometry where scalar-tensor theories are considered in this torsional framework. Being teleparallel gravity of lower order in dynamics, this turns out to be more general than metric Horndeski gravity. In other words, the class of teleparallel Horndeski gravity models is much broader than the standard metric one. In this work, we explore constraints on this wide range of models coming from ghost and Laplacian instabilities. The aim is to limit pathological branches of the theory by fundamental considerations. It is possible to conclude that a very large class of models results physically viable.

Black hole shadow and chaos bound violation in $f(T)$ teleparallel gravity

We show that the so-called chaos bound, proposed by Maldacena, Shenker, and Stanford, can be violated in $f(T)$ teleparallel gravity. In particular, it is possible to select a new gravitational Lyapunov parameter, controlling chaotization of circular trajectories, in black hole photo-sphere, that can exceed the Maldacena, Shenker and Stanford thermal bound. This feature alters the standard quasi-normal modes and ringdown phase after black hole merging with intriguing implications for future gravitational wave detections and black hole shadow measurements. It is a general characteristic for several gravitational theories beyond standard General Relativity.

Questioning the $H_0$ tension via the look-back time

The Hubble tension is investigated taking into account the cosmological look-back time. Specifically, considering a single equation, widely used in standard cosmology, it is possible to recover both values of the Hubble constant $H_0$ reported by the SH0ES and Planck collaborations: the former is obtained through cosmological ladder methods (e.g. Cepheids, Supernovae Type IA) and the latter through measurements of the Cosmic Microwave Background. Also, other values obtained in the literature are achieved with the same approach. We conclude that the Hubble tension can be removed if the look-back time is correctly referred to the redshift where the measurement is performed.

Black hole thermodynamics from logotropic fluids

We show that the Einstein field equations with a negative cosmological constant can admit black hole solutions whose thermodynamics coincides with that of logotropic fluids, recently investigated to heal some cosmological and astrophysical issues. For this purpose, we adopt the Anton-Schmidt equation of state, which represents a generalized version of logotropic fluids. We thus propose a general treatment to obtain an asymptotic anti-de Sitter metric, reproducing the thermodynamic properties of both Anton-Schmidt and logotropic fluids. Hence, we explore how to construct suitable spacetime functions, invoking an event horizon and fulfilling the null, weak, strong and dominant energy conditions. We further relax the strong energy condition to search for possible additional solutions. Finally, we discuss the optical properties related to a specific class of metrics and show how to construct an effective refractive index depending on the spacetime functions and the thermodynamic quantities of the fluid under study. We also explore possible departures with respect to the case without the fluid.

A bias-free cosmological analysis with quasars alleviating $H_0$ tension

Cosmological models and their parameters are widely debated because of theoretical and observational mismatches of the standard cosmological model, especially the current discrepancy between the value of the Hubble constant, $H_{0}$, obtained by Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), and the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation (CMB). Thus, considering high-redshift probes like quasars (QSOs), having intermediate redshifts between SNe Ia and CMB, is a necessary step. In this work, we use SNe Ia and the most updated QSO sample, reaching redshifts up to $z\sim7.5$, applying the Risaliti-Lusso QSO relation based on a non-linear relation between ultraviolet and X-ray luminosities. We consider this relation both in its original form and corrected for selection biases and evolution in redshift through a reliable statistical method also accounting for the circularity problem. We also explore two approaches: with and without calibration on SNe Ia. We then investigate flat and non-flat standard cosmological models and a flat $w$CDM model, with a constant dark energy equation of state parameter $w$. Remarkably, when correcting for the evolution as a function of cosmology, we obtain closed constraints on $Ω_M$ using only non-calibrated QSOs. We find that considering non-calibrated QSOs combined with SNe Ia and accounting for the same correction, our results are compatible with a flat $Λ$CDM model with $Ω_M = 0.3$ and $H_0 = 70 \, \mathrm{km\,s^{-1}\,Mpc^{-1}}$. Intriguingly, the $H_0$ values obtained place halfway between the one from SNe Ia and CMB, paving the way for new insights into the $H_0$ tension.

Tracking the Local Group Dynamics by Extended Gravity

The Local Group (LG) of galaxies, modeled as a two body problem, is sensitive to cosmological contributions like those related to the presence of a cosmological constant $Λ$ into dynamics. Here we study the LG dynamics in the context of Extended Theories of Gravity like $f(R)$ gravity considered as dark energy and dark matter contributions. In the first approach, we perturb the dark energy effect considering a Yukawa-like interaction that naturally emerges from $f(R)$ gravity in the weak field limit. We assume the mass of LG from simulations and, from this, derive constraints on the Yukawa couplings: $α< 0.581$ and $m_{grav} < 5.095 \cdot 10^{-26} \, eV/c^2$. In the second part, considering a minimal extension of General Relativity, i.e. $f(R) \sim R^{1+ε}$, with $|ε|\ll 1$, we investigate the possibility that it replaces dark matter as a MOND-like theory. We find that there is a value of the parameter $β$ (derived starting from $ε$) which gives a minimal value for the LG mass. Moreover, this particular potential allows to calculate the ratio of dark matter and baryonic matter for the LG to be. We show that this ratio could falsify MOND-like theories.

Investigating dark energy by electromagnetic frequency shifts II: the Pantheon+ sample

Following results presented in Spallicci et al. (Eur Phys J Plus 137, 2022) by the same authors, we investigate the observed red shift $z$, working under the hypothesis that it might be composed by the expansion red shift $z_{\rm C}$ and an additional frequency shift $z_{\rm S}$, towards the red or the blue, due to Extended Theories of Electromagnetism (ETE). We have tested this prediction considering the novel Pantheon+ Catalogue, composed by 1701 light curves collected by 1550 SNe Ia, and 16 BAO data, for different cosmological models characterised by the absence of a dark energy component. In particular, we shall derive which values of $z_{\rm S}$ match the observations, comparing the new results with the ones obtained considering the older Pantheon Catalogue. We find interesting differences in the resulting $z_{\rm S}$ distributions, highlighted in the text. Later, we also add a discussion regarding Extended Theories of Gravity and how to incorporate them in our methodology.

Addressing Cosmological Tensions by Non-Local Gravity

Alternative cosmological models have been under deep scrutiny in recent years, aiming to address the main shortcomings of the $Λ$CDM model. Moreover, as the accuracy of cosmological surveys improved, new tensions have risen between the model-dependent analysis of the Cosmic Microwave Background and lower redshift probes. Within this framework, we review two quantum-inspired non-locally extended theories of gravity, whose main cosmological feature is a geometrically driven accelerated expansion. The models are especially investigated in light of the Hubble and growth tension, and promising features emerge for the Deser--Woodard one. On the one hand, the cosmological analysis of the phenomenological formulation of the model shows a lowered growth of structures but an equivalent background with respect to $Λ$CDM. On the other hand, the study of the lensing features at the galaxy cluster scale of a new formulation of non-local cosmology, based on Noether symmetries, makes room for the possibility of alleviating both the $H_0$ and $σ_8$ tension. However, the urgent need for a screening mechanism arises for this non-local theory of gravity.

Comparing Equivalent Gravities: common features and differences

We discuss equivalent representations of gravity in the framework of metric-affine geometries pointing out basic concepts from where these theories stem out. In particular, we take into account tetrads and spin connection to describe the so called {\it Geometric Trinity of Gravity}. Specifically, we consider General Relativity, constructed upon the metric tensor and based on the curvature $R$; Teleparallel Equivalent of General Relativity, formulated in terms of torsion $T$ and relying on tetrads and spin connection; Symmetric Teleparallel Equivalent of General Relativity, built up on non-metricity $Q$, constructed from metric tensor and affine connection. General Relativity is formulated as a geometric theory of gravity based on metric, whereas teleparallel approaches configure as gauge theories, where gauge choices permit not only to simplify calculations, but also to give deep insight into the basic concepts of gravitational field. In particular, we point out how foundation principles of General Relativity (i.e the Equivalence Principle and the General Covariance) can be seen from the teleparallel point of view. These theories are dynamically equivalent and this feature can be demonstrated under three different standards: (1) the variational method; (2) the field equations; (3) the solutions.

A cosmographic outlook on dark energy and modified gravity

The cosmographic technique is a powerful model-independent tool for distinguishing between competing cosmological scenarios. The key strengths and weaknesses of standard cosmography are discussed in view of healing the convergence problem endangering the high-redshift expansions of cosmological distances. We focus especially on rational cosmographic approximations to reconstruct the dark energy behaviour under the $f(R)$, $f(T)$ and $f(Q)$ gravity frameworks. Based on observational constraints over the cosmographic series, we investigate the origin of cosmic acceleration and the possibility of going beyond the standard cosmological model to explain the dark energy problem.

Non-Local Gravity Wormholes

We consider Non-local Gravity in view to obtain stable and traversable wormhole solutions. In particular, the class of Non-local Integral Kernel Theories of Gravity, with the inverse d'Alembert operator in the gravitational action, is taken into account. We obtain constraints for the null energy condition and derive the field equations. Two special cases for the related Klein-Gordon equation are assumed: one where the function in the gravitational action has a linear form and another one with exponential form. In each case, we take into account two forms for scalar fields and derive the shape functions. Asymptotic flatness and flaring-out conditions are checked. Energy conditions and dynamics of the solutions are examined at the throat. The main result is that non-local gravity contributions allow stability and traversability of the wormhole without considering any exotic matter.

Early and late time cosmology: the $f(R)$ gravity perspective

Discrepancies between observations at early and late cosmic epochs, and the vacuum energy problem associated with the interpretation of cosmological constant, are questioning the $Λ$CDM model. Motivated by these conceptual and observational facts, extensions of Einstein's gravity are recently intensively considered in view of curing unsolved issues suffered by General Relativity at ultraviolet and infrared scales. Here, we provide a short overview of some aspects of $f(R)$ gravity, focusing, in particular, on cosmological applications. Specifically, Noether symmetries are adopted as a criterion to select viable models and investigate the corresponding dynamics. We thus find solutions to the cosmological field equations, analyzing the behaviour of selected models from the matter-dominated to the present epoch. Moreover, constraints coming from energy conditions and the so-called swampland criteria are also considered. In particular, we qualitatively discuss the possibility of $f(R)$ gravity to account for fixing cosmic tensions.

Constraining $Λ$CDM cosmological parameters with Einstein Telescope mock data

We investigate the capability of Einstein Telescope to constrain the cosmological parameters of the non-flat $Λ$CDM cosmological model. Two types of mock datasets are considered depending on whether or not a short Gamma-Ray Burst is detected and associated with the gravitational wave emitted by binary neutron stars merger using the THESEUS satellite. Depending on the mock dataset, two statistical estimators are applied: one assumes that the redshift is known, while the other marginalizes over it assuming a specific redshift prior distribution. We demonstrate that {\em (i)} using mock catalogs collecting gravitational wave signals emitted by binary neutron stars systems to which a short Gamma-Ray Burst has been associated, Einstein Telescope may achieve an accuracy on the cosmological parameters of $σ_{H_0}\approx 0.40$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$, $σ_{Ω_{k,0}}\approx 0.09$, and $σ_{Ω_{Λ,0}}\approx 0.07$; while {\em (ii)} using mock catalogs collecting all gravitational wave signals emitted by binary neutron stars systems for which an electromagnetic counterpart has not been detected, Einstein Telescope may achieve an accuracy on the cosmological parameters of $σ_{H_0}\approx 0.04$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$, $σ_{Ω_{k,0}}\approx 0.01$, and $σ_{Ω_{Λ,0}}\approx 0.01$, once the redshift probability distribution of GW events is known from population synthesis simulations and/or the measure of the tidal deformability parameter. These results show an improvement of a factor 2-75 with respect to earlier results using complementary datasets.
