Quantum Dynamics of Solitons in Strongly Interacting Systems on Optical Lattices

Mean-field dynamics of strongly interacting bosons described by hard core bosons with nearest-neighbor attraction has been shown to support two species of solitons: one of Gross-Pitaevskii (GP-type) where the condensate fraction remains dark and a novel non-Gross-Pitaevskii-type (non-GP-type) characterized by brightening of the condensate fraction. Here we study the effects of quantum fluctuations on these solitons using the adaptive time-dependent density matrix renormalization group method, which takes into account the effect of strong correlations. We use local observables as the density, condensate density and correlation functions as well as the entanglement entropy to characterize the stability of the initial states. We find both species of solitons to be stable under quantum evolution for a finite duration, their tolerance to quantum fluctuations being enhanced as the width of the soliton increases. We describe possible experimental realizations in atomic Bose Einstein Condensates, polarized degenerate Fermi gases, and in systems of polar molecules on optical lattices.

Antiferromagnetic spin-S chains with exactly dimerized ground states

We show that spin S Heisenberg spin chains with an additional three-body interaction of the form (S_{i-1}S_{i})(S_{i}S_{i+1})+h.c. possess fully dimerized ground states if the ratio of the three-body interaction to the bilinear one is equal to 1/(4S(S+1)-2). This result generalizes the Majumdar-Ghosh point of the J_1-J_2 chain, to which the present model reduces for S=1/2. For S=1, we use the density matrix renormalization group method (DMRG) to show that the transition between the Haldane and the dimerized phases is continuous with central charge c=3/2. Finally, we show that such a three-body interaction appears naturally in a strong-coupling expansion of the Hubbard model, and we discuss the consequences for the dimerization of actual antiferromagnetic chains.

Resonantly Enhanced Tunneling and Transport of Ultracold Atoms on Tilted Optical Lattices

We investigate the resonantly enhanced tunneling dynamics of ultracold bosons loaded on a tilted 1-D optical lattice, which can be used to simulate a chain of Ising spins and associated quantum phase transitions. The center of mass motion after a sudden tilt both at commensurate and incommensurate fillings is obtained via analytic, time-dependent exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods (adaptive t-DMRG). We identify a maximum in the amplitude of the center of mass oscillations at the quantum critical point of the effective spin system. For the dynamics of incommensurate systems, which cannot be mapped to a spin model, we develop an analytical approach in which the time evolution is obtained by projecting onto resonant families of small clusters. We compare the results of this approach at low fillings to the exact time evolution and find good agreement even at filling factors as large as 2/3. Using this projection onto small clusters, we propose a controllable transport scheme applicable in the context of Atomtronic devices on optical lattices (`slinky scheme').

SU(N) magnetism in chains of ultracold alkaline-earth-metal atoms: Mott transitions and quantum correlations

We investigate one dimensional SU$(N)$ Hubbard chains at zero temperature, which can be emulated with ultracold alkaline earth atoms, by using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG), Bethe ansatz (BA), and bosonization. We compute experimental observables and use the DMRG to benchmark the accuracy of the Bethe ansatz for $N>2$ where the BA is only approximate. In the worst case, we find a relative error $ε\lesssim 4%$ in the BA ground state energy for $N \leq 4$ at filling 1/N, which is due to the fact that BA improperly treats the triply and higher occupied states. Using the DMRG for $N \leq 4$ and the BA for large $N$, we determine the regimes of validity of strong- and weak-coupling perturbation theory for all values of $N$ and in particular, the parameter range in which the system is well described by a SU$(N)$ Heisenberg model at filling 1/N. We find this depends only weakly on $N$. We investigate the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition from a Luttinger liquid to a Mott-insulator by computing the fidelity susceptibility and the Luttinger parameter $K_ρ$ at 1/N filling. The numerical findings give strong evidence that the fidelity susceptibility develops a minimum at a critical interaction strength which is found to occur at a finite positive value for $N>2$.

Unconventional magnetization plateaus in a Shastry-Sutherland spin tube

Using density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and perturbative continuous unitary transformations (PCUTs), we study the magnetization process in a magnetic field for all coupling strengths of a quasi-1D version of the 2D Shastry-Sutherland lattice, a frustrated spin tube made of two orthogonal dimer chains. At small inter-dimer coupling, plateaus in the magnetization appear at 1/6, 1/4, 1/3, 3/8, and 1/2. As in 2D, they correspond to a Wigner crystal of triplons. However, close to the boundary of the product singlet phase, plateaus of a new type appear at 1/5 and 3/4. They are stabilized by the localization of {\it bound states} of triplons. Their magnetization profile differs significantly from that of single triplon plateaus and leads to specific NMR signatures. We address the possibility to stabilize such plateaus in further geometries by analyzing small finite clusters using exact diagonalizations and the PCUTs.

Quantum Magnetism with Polar Alkali Dimers

We show that dipolar interactions between ultracold polar alkali dimers in optical lattices can be used to realize a highly tunable generalization of the t-J model, which we refer to as the t-J-V-W model. The model features long-range spin-spin interactions J_z and J_perp of XXZ type, long-range density-density interaction V, and long-range density-spin interaction W, all of which can be controlled in both magnitude and sign independently of each other and of the tunneling t. The "spin" is encoded in the rotational degree of freedom of the molecules, while the interactions are controlled by applied static electric and continuous-wave microwave fields. Furthermore, we show that nuclear spins of the molecules can be used to implement an additional (orbital) degree of freedom that is coupled to the original rotational degree of freedom in a tunable way. The presented system is expected to exhibit exotic physics and to provide insights into strongly correlated phenomena in condensed matter systems. Realistic experimental imperfections are discussed.

Tunable Superfluidity and Quantum Magnetism with Ultracold Polar Molecules

By selecting two dressed rotational states of ultracold polar molecules in an optical lattice, we obtain a highly tunable generalization of the t-J model, which we refer to as the t-J-V-W model. In addition to XXZ spin exchange, the model features density-density interactions and novel density-spin interactions; all interactions are dipolar. We show that full control of all interaction parameters in both magnitude and sign can be achieved independently of each other and of the tunneling. As a first step towards demonstrating the potential of the system, we apply the density matrix renormalization group method (DMRG) to obtain the 1D phase diagram of the simplest experimentally realizable case. Specifically, we show that the tunability and the long-range nature of the interactions in the t-J-V-W model enable enhanced superfluidity. Finally, we show that Bloch oscillations in a tilted lattice can be used to probe the phase diagram experimentally.

Phase diagram and continuous pair-unbinding transition of the bilinear-biquadratic S=1 Heisenberg chain in a magnetic field

We investigate the properties of the Heisenberg S=1 chain with bilinear and biquadratic interactions in a magnetic field using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group, Bethe ansatz and field theoretical considerations. In a large region of the parameter space, we identify a magnetized ferroquadrupolar Luttinger liquid consisting of a quasi-condensate of bound magnon pairs. This liquid undergoes a continuous pair unbinding transition to a more conventional Luttinger liquid region obtained by polarizing the system above the Haldane gap region. This pair unbinding transition is shown to be in the Ising universality class on top of a Luttinger liquid, leading to an effective central charge 3/2. We also revisit the nature of the partially polarized Luttinger liquid around and above the Uimin-Lai-Sutherland point. Our results confirm that this is a two-component liquid and rule out the formation of a single-component vector chiral phase.

Ground-State Phase Diagram of the 1D t-J model

We examine the ground-state phase diagram of the t-J model in one dimension by means of the Density Matrix Renormalization Group. This model is characterized by a rich phase diagram as a function of the exchange interaction J and the density n, displaying Luttinger-liquid (LL) behavior both of repulsive and attractive (i.e. superconducting) nature, a spin-gap phase, and phase-separation. The phase boundaries separating the repulsive from the attractive LL phase as J is increased, and also the boundaries of the spin-gap region at low densities, and phase-separation at even larger J, are determined on the basis of correlation functions and energy-gaps. In particular, we shed light on a contradiction between variational and renormalization-group (RG) results about the extent of the spin-gap phase, that results larger than the variational but smaller than the RG one. Furthermore, we show that the spin gap can reach a sizable value (~ 0.1 t) at low enough filling, such that preformed pairs should be observable at temperatures below these energy scales. No evidence for a phase with clustering of more than two particles is found on approaching phase separation.

Time evolution of correlations in strongly interacting fermions after a quantum quench

Using the adaptive time-dependent density matrix renormalization group, we study the time evolution of density correlations of interacting spinless fermions on a one-dimensional lattice after a sudden change in the interaction strength. Over a broad range of model parameters, the correlation function exhibits a characteristic light-cone-like time evolution representative of a ballistic transport of information. Such behavior is observed both when quenching an insulator into the metallic region and also when quenching within the insulating region. However, when a metallic state beyond the quantum critical point is quenched deep into the insulating regime, no indication for ballistic transport is observed. Instead, stable domain walls in the density correlations emerge during the time evolution, consistent with the predictions of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism.

Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya anisotropy and non-magnetic impurities in the $s = 1/2$ kagome system ZnCu_3(OH)_6Cl_2

Motivated by recent nuclear magnetic resonance experiments on ZnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2$, we present an exact-diagonalization study of the combined effects of non-magnetic impurities and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions in the $s = 1/2$ kagome antiferromagnet. The local response to an applied field and correlation-matrix data reveal that the dimer freezing which occurs around each impurity for $D = 0$ persists at least up to $D/J\simeq 0.06$, where $J$ and $D$ denote respectively the exchange and DM interaction energies. The phase transition to the ($Q = 0$) semiclassical, 120$^\circ$ state favored at large $D$ takes place at $D/J\simeq 0.1$. However, the dimers next to the impurity sites remain strong up to values $D \sim J$, far above this critical point, and thus do not participate fully in the ordered state. We discuss the implications of our results for experiments on ZnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2$.

Diagonalization- and Numerical Renormalization-Group-Based Methods for Interacting Quantum Systems

In these lecture notes, we present a pedagogical review of a number of related {\it numerically exact} approaches to quantum many-body problems. In particular, we focus on methods based on the exact diagonalization of the Hamiltonian matrix and on methods extending exact diagonalization using renormalization group ideas, i.e., Wilson's Numerical Renormalization Group (NRG) and White's Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG). These methods are standard tools for the investigation of a variety of interacting quantum systems, especially low-dimensional quantum lattice models. We also survey extensions to the methods to calculate properties such as dynamical quantities and behavior at finite temperature, and discuss generalizations of the DMRG method to a wider variety of systems, such as classical models and quantum chemical problems. Finally, we briefly review some recent developments for obtaining a more general formulation of the DMRG in the context of matrix product states as well as recent progress in calculating the time evolution of quantum systems using the DMRG and the relationship of the foundations of the method with quantum information theory.

Time evolution of one-dimensional Quantum Many Body Systems

The level of current understanding of the physics of time-dependent strongly correlated quantum systems is far from complete, principally due to the lack of effective controlled approaches. Recently, there has been progress in the development of approaches for one-dimensional systems. We describe recent developments in the construction of numerical schemes for general (one-dimensional) Hamiltonians: in particular, schemes based on exact diagonalization techniques and on the density matrix renormalization group method (DMRG). We present preliminary results for spinless fermions with nearest-neighbor-interaction and investigate their accuracy by comparing with exact results.
