The epsilon-regularity theorem for Brakke flows near triple junctions

We establish the $\varepsilon$-regularity theorem for $k$-dimensional, possibly forced, Brakke flows near a static, multiplicity-one triple junction. This result provides the parabolic analogue to L. Simon's foundational work on the singular set of stationary varifolds and confirms that the regular structure of triple junctions persists under weak mean curvature flow. The regularity holds provided the flow satisfies a mild structural assumption on its 1-dimensional slices taken orthogonal to the junction's $(k-1)$-dimensional spine, which prohibits certain topological degeneracies. We prove that this assumption is automatically satisfied by two fundamental classes of flows where such singularities are expected: codimension-one multi-phase flows, such as the canonical $\mathrm{BV}$-Brakke flows constructed by the authors, and flows of arbitrary codimension with the structure of a mod 3 integral current, which arise from Ilmanen's elliptic regularization. For such flows, therefore, the Simon type regularity holds unconditionally.

Area minimizing hypersurfaces modulo $p$: a geometric free-boundary problem

We consider area minimizing $m$-dimensional currents $\mathrm{mod}(p)$ in complete $C^2$ Riemannian manifolds $Σ$ of dimension $m+1$. For odd moduli we prove that, away from a closed rectifiable set of codimension $2$, the current in question is, locally, the union of finitely many smooth minimal hypersurfaces coming together at a common $C^{1,α}$ boundary of dimension $m-1$, and the result is optimal. For even $p$ such structure holds in a neighborhood of any point where at least one tangent cone has $(m-1)$-dimensional spine. These structural results are indeed the byproduct of a theorem that proves (for any modulus) uniqueness and decay towards such tangent cones. The underlying strategy of the proof is inspired by the techniques developed by Leon Simon in "Cylindrical tangent cones and the singular set of minimal submanifolds" (J. Diff. Geom. 1993) in a class of multiplicity one stationary varifolds. The major difficulty in our setting is produced by the fact that the cones and surfaces under investigation have arbitrary multiplicities ranging from $1$ to $\lfloor \frac{p}{2}\rfloor$.

Structure of two-dimensional mod$(q)$ area-minimizing currents near flat singularities: the codimension one case

We obtain a fine structural result for two-dimensional mod$(q)$ area-minimizing currents of codimension one, close to flat singularities. Precisely, we show that, locally around any such singularity, the current is a $C^{1,α}$-perturbation of the graph of a radially homogeneous special multiple-valued function that arises from a superposition of homogeneous harmonic polynomials. Additionally, as a preliminary step towards an analogous result in arbitrary codimension, we prove in general that the set of flat singularities of density $\frac{q}{2}$, where the current is ``genuinely mod$(q)$", consists of isolated points.

Classical solutions to the soap film capillarity problem for plane boundaries

We study the soap film capillarity problem, in which soap films are modeled as sets of least perimeter among those having prescribed (small) volume and satisfying a topological spanning condition. When the given boundary is the closed tubular neighborhood in $\mathbb{R}^3$ of a smooth Jordan curve (or, more generally, the closed tubular neighborhood in $\mathbb{R}^d$ of a smooth embedding of $\mathbb{S}^{d-2}$ in a hyperplane), we prove existence and uniqueness of classical minimizers, for which the collapsing phenomenon does not occur. We show that the boundary of the unique minimizer is the union of two symmetric smooth normal graphs over a portion of the plane; the graphs have positive constant mean curvature bounded linearly in terms of the volume parameter, and meet the boundary of the tubular neighbourhood orthogonally. Moreover, we prove uniform bounds on the sectional curvatures in order to show that the boundaries of solutions corresponding to varying volumes are ordered monotonically and produce a foliation of space by constant mean curvature hypersurfaces.

Dynamical instability of minimal surfaces at flat singular points

Suppose that a countably $n$-rectifiable set $Γ_0$ is the support of a multiplicity-one stationary varifold in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ with a point admitting a flat tangent plane $T$ of density $Q \geq 2$. We prove that, under a suitable assumption on the decay rate of the blow-ups of $Γ_0$ towards $T$, there exists a non-constant Brakke flow starting with $Γ_0$. This shows non-uniqueness of Brakke flow under these conditions, and suggests that the stability of a stationary varifold with respect to mean curvature flow may be used to exclude the presence of flat singularities.

End-time regularity theorem for Brakke flows

For a general $k$-dimensional Brakke flow in $\mathbb{R}^n$ locally close to a $k$-dimensional plane in the sense of measure, it is proved that the flow is represented locally as a smooth graph over the plane with estimates on all the derivatives up to the end-time. Moreover, at any point in space-time where the Gaussian density is close to $1$, the flow can be extended smoothly as a mean curvature flow up to that time in a neighborhood: this extends White's local regularity theorem to general Brakke flows. The regularity result is in fact obtained for more general Brakke-like flows, driven by the mean curvature plus an additional forcing term in a dimensionally sharp integrability class or in a Hölder class.

New advances on the existence and regularity of Brakke's mean curvature flows

In this survey paper, I discuss some recent progress on the existence and regularity of Brakke flows. These include: an "end-time version" of Brakke's local regularity theorem, which allows to extend the validity of the celebrated regularity theorem by White from limits of smooth mean curvature flows to arbitrary Brakke flows; a global-in-time existence theorem for multi-phase Brakke flows of grain boundaries satisfying suitable ${\rm BV}$ regularity in time, in both the unconstrained and the fixed boundary settings, with applications to Plateau's problem for the latter; and the proof that branching singularities of minimal surfaces are a trigger for dynamical instability, in the sense that they may be "perturbed away" by a non-trivial canonical Brakke flow. This note is an extended version of a talk given by the author at the MATRIX Research Institute on the occasion of the workshop entitled "Minimal surfaces and geometric flows: interaction between the local and the nonlocal worlds".

Excess decay for minimizing hypercurrents mod $2Q$

We consider codimension $1$ area-minimizing $m$-dimensional currents $T$ mod an even integer $p=2Q$ in a $C^2$ Riemannian submanifold $Σ$ of the Euclidean space. We prove a suitable excess-decay estimate towards the unique tangent cone at every point $q\in \mathrm{spt} (T)\setminus \mathrm{spt}^p (\partial T)$ where at least one such tangent cone is $Q$ copies of a single plane. While an analogous decay statement was proved in arXiv:2111.11202 as a corollary of a more general theory for stable varifolds, in our statement we strive for the optimal dependence of the estimates upon the second fundamental form of $Σ$. This technical improvement is in fact needed in arXiv:2201.10204 to prove that the singular set of $T$ can be decomposed into a $C^{1,α}$ $(m-1)$-dimensional submanifold and an additional closed remaining set of Hausdorff dimension at most $m-2$.

On the existence of canonical multi-phase Brakke flows

This paper establishes the global-in-time existence of a multi-phase mean curvature flow, evolving from an arbitrary closed rectifiable initial datum, which is a Brakke flow and a BV solution at the same time. In particular, we prove the validity of an explicit identity concerning the change of volume of the evolving grains, showing that their boundaries move according to the generalized mean curvature vector of the Brakke flow. As a consequence of the results recently established by Fischer et al. in arXiv:2003.05478, under suitable assumptions on the initial datum, such additional property resolves the non-uniqueness issue of Brakke flows.

Fine structure of the singular set of area minimizing hypersurfaces modulo $p$

Consider an area minimizing current modulo $p$ of dimension $m$ in a smooth Riemannian manifold of dimension $m+1$. We prove that its interior singular set is, up to a relatively closed set of dimension at most $m-2$, a $C^{1,α}$ submanifold of dimension $m-1$ at which, locally, $N\leq p$ regular sheets of the current join transversally, each sheet counted with a positive multiplicity $k_i$ so that $\sum_i k_i = p$. This completes the analysis of the structure of the singular set of area minimizing hypersurfaces modulo $p$, initiated by J. Taylor for $m=2$ and $p=3$ and extended by the authors to arbitrary $m$ and all odd $p$ in arXiv:2105.08135. We tackle the remaining case of even $p$ by showing that the set of singular points admitting a flat blow-up is of codimension at least two in the current. First, we prove a structural result for the singularities of minimizers in the linearized problem, by combining an epiperimetric inequality with an analysis of homogeneous minimizers to conclude that the corresponding degrees of homogeneity are always integers; second, we refine Almgren's blow-up procedure to prove that all flat singularities of the current persist as singularities of the $\mathrm{Dir}$-minimizing limit. An important ingredient of our analysis is the uniqueness of flat tangent cones at singular points, recently established by Minter and Wickramasekera in arXiv:2111.11202.

Plateau's problem as a singular limit of capillarity problems

Soap films at equilibrium are modeled, rather than as surfaces, as regions of small total volume through the introduction of a capillarity problem with a homotopic spanning condition. This point of view introduces a length scale in the classical Plateau's problem, which is in turn recovered in the vanishing volume limit. This approximation of area minimizing hypersurfaces leads to an energy based selection principle for Plateau's problem, points at physical features of soap films that are unaccessible by simply looking at minimal surfaces, and opens several challenging questions.

A multi-material transport problem with arbitrary marginals

In this paper we study general transportation problems in $\mathbb{R}^n$, in which $m$ different goods are moved simultaneously. The initial and final positions of the goods are prescribed by measures $μ^-$, $μ^+$ on $\mathbb{R}^n$ with values in $\mathbb{R}^m$. When the measures are finite atomic, a discrete transportation network is a measure $T$ on $\mathbb{R}^n$ with values in $\mathbb{R}^{n\times m}$ represented by an oriented graph $\mathcal{G}$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ whose edges carry multiplicities in $\mathbb{R}^m$. The constraint is encoded in the relation ${\rm div}(T)=μ^--μ^+$. The cost of the discrete transportation $T$ is obtained integrating on $\mathcal{G}$ a general function $\mathcal{C}:\mathbb{R}^m\to\mathbb{R}$ of the multiplicity. When the initial data $\left(μ^-,μ^+\right)$ are arbitrary (possibly diffuse) measures, the cost of a transportation network between them is computed by relaxation of the functional on graphs mentioned above. Our main result establishes the existence of cost-minimizing transportation networks for arbitrary data $\left(μ^-,μ^+\right)$. Furthermore, under additional assumptions on the cost integrand $\mathcal{C}$, we prove the existence of transportation networks with finite cost and the stability of the minimizers with respect to variations of the given data. Finally, we provide an explicit integral representation formula for the cost of rectifiable transportation networks, and we characterize the costs such that every transportation network with finite cost is rectifiable.

Collapsing and the convex hull property in a soap film capillarity model

Soap films hanging from a wire frame are studied in the framework of capillarity theory. Minimizers in the corresponding variational problem are known to consist of positive volume regions with boundaries of constant mean curvature/pressure, possibly connected by "collapsed" minimal surfaces. We prove here that collapsing only occurs if the mean curvature/pressure of the bulky regions is negative, and that, when this last property holds, the whole soap film lies in the convex hull of its boundary wire frame.

An existence theorem for Brakke flow with fixed boundary conditions

Consider an arbitrary closed, countably $n$-rectifiable set in a strictly convex $(n+1)$-dimensional domain, and suppose that the set has finite $n$-dimensional Hausdorff measure and the complement is not connected. Starting from this given set, we show that there exists a non-trivial Brakke flow with fixed boundary data for all times. As $t \uparrow \infty$, the flow sequentially converges to non-trivial solutions of Plateau's problem in the setting of stationary varifolds.

Area minimizing currents mod $2Q$: linear regularity theory

We establish a theory of $Q$-valued functions minimizing a suitable generalization of the Dirichlet integral. In a second paper the theory will be used to approximate efficiently area minimizing currents $\mathrm{mod}(p)$ when $p=2Q$, and to establish a first general partial regularity theorem for every $p$ in any dimension and codimension.

Regularity of area minimizing currents mod $p$

We establish a first general partial regularity theorem for area minimizing currents $\mathrm{mod}(p)$, for every $p$, in any dimension and codimension. More precisely, we prove that the Hausdorff dimension of the interior singular set of an $m$-dimensional area minimizing current $\mathrm{mod}(p)$ cannot be larger than $m-1$. Additionally, we show that, when $p$ is odd, the interior singular set is $(m-1)$-rectifiable with locally finite $(m-1)$-dimensional measure.

Smoothness of collapsed regions in a capillarity model for soap films

We study generalized minimizers in the soap film capillarity model introduced in [arXiv:1807.05200,arXiv:1907.00551]. Collapsed regions of generalized minimizers are shown to be smooth outside of dimensionally small singular sets, which are thus empty in physical dimensions. Since generalized minimizers converge to Plateau's type surfaces in the vanishing volume limit, the fact that collapsed regions cannot exhibit $Y$-points and $T$-points (which are possibly present in the limit Plateau's surfaces) gives the first strong indication that singularities of the limit Plateau's surfaces should always be "wetted" by the bulky regions of the approximating generalized minimizers.

Multiple valued sections of vector bundles: the reparametrization theorem for $Q$-valued functions revisited

We analyze a notion of multiple valued sections of a vector bundle over an abstract smooth Riemannian manifold, which was suggested by W. Allard in the unpublished note "Some useful techniques for dealing with multiple valued functions" and generalizes Almgren's $Q$-valued functions. We study some relevant properties of such $Q$-multisections and apply the theory to provide an elementary and purely geometric proof of a delicate reparametrization theorem for multi-valued graphs which plays an important role in the regularity theory for higher codimension area minimizing currents à la Almgren-De Lellis-Spadaro.
