BCS-Net: Boundary, Context and Semantic for Automatic COVID-19 Lung Infection Segmentation from CT Images

The spread of COVID-19 has brought a huge disaster to the world, and the automatic segmentation of infection regions can help doctors to make diagnosis quickly and reduce workload. However, there are several challenges for the accurate and complete segmentation, such as the scattered infection area distribution, complex background noises, and blurred segmentation boundaries. To this end, in this paper, we propose a novel network for automatic COVID-19 lung infection segmentation from CT images, named BCS-Net, which considers the boundary, context, and semantic attributes. The BCS-Net follows an encoder-decoder architecture, and more designs focus on the decoder stage that includes three progressively Boundary-Context-Semantic Reconstruction (BCSR) blocks. In each BCSR block, the attention-guided global context (AGGC) module is designed to learn the most valuable encoder features for decoder by highlighting the important spatial and boundary locations and modeling the global context dependence. Besides, a semantic guidance (SG) unit generates the semantic guidance map to refine the decoder features by aggregating multi-scale high-level features at the intermediate resolution. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our proposed framework outperforms the existing competitors both qualitatively and quantitatively.

Cycle-Interactive Generative Adversarial Network for Robust Unsupervised Low-Light Enhancement

Getting rid of the fundamental limitations in fitting to the paired training data, recent unsupervised low-light enhancement methods excel in adjusting illumination and contrast of images. However, for unsupervised low light enhancement, the remaining noise suppression issue due to the lacking of supervision of detailed signal largely impedes the wide deployment of these methods in real-world applications. Herein, we propose a novel Cycle-Interactive Generative Adversarial Network (CIGAN) for unsupervised low-light image enhancement, which is capable of not only better transferring illumination distributions between low/normal-light images but also manipulating detailed signals between two domains, e.g., suppressing/synthesizing realistic noise in the cyclic enhancement/degradation process. In particular, the proposed low-light guided transformation feed-forwards the features of low-light images from the generator of enhancement GAN (eGAN) into the generator of degradation GAN (dGAN). With the learned information of real low-light images, dGAN can synthesize more realistic diverse illumination and contrast in low-light images. Moreover, the feature randomized perturbation module in dGAN learns to increase the feature randomness to produce diverse feature distributions, persuading the synthesized low-light images to contain realistic noise. Extensive experiments demonstrate both the superiority of the proposed method and the effectiveness of each module in CIGAN.

Dual Swin-Transformer based Mutual Interactive Network for RGB-D Salient Object Detection

Salient Object Detection is the task of predicting the human attended region in a given scene. Fusing depth information has been proven effective in this task. The main challenge of this problem is how to aggregate the complementary information from RGB modality and depth modality. However, conventional deep models heavily rely on CNN feature extractors, and the long-range contextual dependencies are usually ignored. In this work, we propose Dual Swin-Transformer based Mutual Interactive Network. We adopt Swin-Transformer as the feature extractor for both RGB and depth modality to model the long-range dependencies in visual inputs. Before fusing the two branches of features into one, attention-based modules are applied to enhance features from each modality. We design a self-attention-based cross-modality interaction module and a gated modality attention module to leverage the complementary information between the two modalities. For the saliency decoding, we create different stages enhanced with dense connections and keep a decoding memory while the multi-level encoding features are considered simultaneously. Considering the inaccurate depth map issue, we collect the RGB features of early stages into a skip convolution module to give more guidance from RGB modality to the final saliency prediction. In addition, we add edge supervision to regularize the feature learning process. Comprehensive experiments on five standard RGB-D SOD benchmark datasets over four evaluation metrics demonstrate the superiority of the proposed DTMINet method.

Efficient VVC Intra Prediction Based on Deep Feature Fusion and Probability Estimation

The ever-growing multimedia traffic has underscored the importance of effective multimedia codecs. Among them, the up-to-date lossy video coding standard, Versatile Video Coding (VVC), has been attracting attentions of video coding community. However, the gain of VVC is achieved at the cost of significant encoding complexity, which brings the need to realize fast encoder with comparable Rate Distortion (RD) performance. In this paper, we propose to optimize the VVC complexity at intra-frame prediction, with a two-stage framework of deep feature fusion and probability estimation. At the first stage, we employ the deep convolutional network to extract the spatialtemporal neighboring coding features. Then we fuse all reference features obtained by different convolutional kernels to determine an optimal intra coding depth. At the second stage, we employ a probability-based model and the spatial-temporal coherence to select the candidate partition modes within the optimal coding depth. Finally, these selected depths and partitions are executed whilst unnecessary computations are excluded. Experimental results on standard database demonstrate the superiority of proposed method, especially for High Definition (HD) and Ultra-HD (UHD) video sequences.

Global-and-Local Collaborative Learning for Co-Salient Object Detection

The goal of co-salient object detection (CoSOD) is to discover salient objects that commonly appear in a query group containing two or more relevant images. Therefore, how to effectively extract inter-image correspondence is crucial for the CoSOD task. In this paper, we propose a global-and-local collaborative learning architecture, which includes a global correspondence modeling (GCM) and a local correspondence modeling (LCM) to capture comprehensive inter-image corresponding relationship among different images from the global and local perspectives. Firstly, we treat different images as different time slices and use 3D convolution to integrate all intra features intuitively, which can more fully extract the global group semantics. Secondly, we design a pairwise correlation transformation (PCT) to explore similarity correspondence between pairwise images and combine the multiple local pairwise correspondences to generate the local inter-image relationship. Thirdly, the inter-image relationships of the GCM and LCM are integrated through a global-and-local correspondence aggregation (GLA) module to explore more comprehensive inter-image collaboration cues. Finally, the intra- and inter-features are adaptively integrated by an intra-and-inter weighting fusion (AEWF) module to learn co-saliency features and predict the co-saliency map. The proposed GLNet is evaluated on three prevailing CoSOD benchmark datasets, demonstrating that our model trained on a small dataset (about 3k images) still outperforms eleven state-of-the-art competitors trained on some large datasets (about 8k-200k images).

Deep Learning-Based Intra Mode Derivation for Versatile Video Coding

In intra coding, Rate Distortion Optimization (RDO) is performed to achieve the optimal intra mode from a pre-defined candidate list. The optimal intra mode is also required to be encoded and transmitted to the decoder side besides the residual signal, where lots of coding bits are consumed. To further improve the performance of intra coding in Versatile Video Coding (VVC), an intelligent intra mode derivation method is proposed in this paper, termed as Deep Learning based Intra Mode Derivation (DLIMD). In specific, the process of intra mode derivation is formulated as a multi-class classification task, which aims to skip the module of intra mode signaling for coding bits reduction. The architecture of DLIMD is developed to adapt to different quantization parameter settings and variable coding blocks including non-square ones, which are handled by one single trained model. Different from the existing deep learning based classification problems, the hand-crafted features are also fed into the intra mode derivation network besides the learned features from feature learning network. To compete with traditional method, one additional binary flag is utilized in the video codec to indicate the selected scheme with RDO. Extensive experimental results reveal that the proposed method can achieve 2.28%, 1.74%, and 2.18% bit rate reduction on average for Y, U, and V components on the platform of VVC test model, which outperforms the state-of-the-art works.

Detect and Locate: Exposing Face Manipulation by Semantic- and Noise-level Telltales

The technological advancements of deep learning have enabled sophisticated face manipulation schemes, raising severe trust issues and security concerns in modern society. Generally speaking, detecting manipulated faces and locating the potentially altered regions are challenging tasks. Herein, we propose a conceptually simple but effective method to efficiently detect forged faces in an image while simultaneously locating the manipulated regions. The proposed scheme relies on a segmentation map that delivers meaningful high-level semantic information clues about the image. Furthermore, a noise map is estimated, playing a complementary role in capturing low-level clues and subsequently empowering decision-making. Finally, the features from these two modules are combined to distinguish fake faces. Extensive experiments show that the proposed model achieves state-of-the-art detection accuracy and remarkable localization performance.

Deep Magnification-Flexible Upsampling over 3D Point Clouds

This paper addresses the problem of generating dense point clouds from given sparse point clouds to model the underlying geometric structures of objects/scenes. To tackle this challenging issue, we propose a novel end-to-end learning-based framework. Specifically, by taking advantage of the linear approximation theorem, we first formulate the problem explicitly, which boils down to determining the interpolation weights and high-order approximation errors. Then, we design a lightweight neural network to adaptively learn unified and sorted interpolation weights as well as the high-order refinements, by analyzing the local geometry of the input point cloud. The proposed method can be interpreted by the explicit formulation, and thus is more memory-efficient than existing ones. In sharp contrast to the existing methods that work only for a pre-defined and fixed upsampling factor, the proposed framework only requires a single neural network with one-time training to handle various upsampling factors within a typical range, which is highly desired in real-world applications. In addition, we propose a simple yet effective training strategy to drive such a flexible ability. In addition, our method can handle non-uniformly distributed and noisy data well. Extensive experiments on both synthetic and real-world data demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method over state-of-the-art methods both quantitatively and qualitatively.

Learning Transformer Features for Image Quality Assessment

Objective image quality evaluation is a challenging task, which aims to measure the quality of a given image automatically. According to the availability of the reference images, there are Full-Reference and No-Reference IQA tasks, respectively. Most deep learning approaches use regression from deep features extracted by Convolutional Neural Networks. For the FR task, another option is conducting a statistical comparison on deep features. For all these methods, non-local information is usually neglected. In addition, the relationship between FR and NR tasks is less explored. Motivated by the recent success of transformers in modeling contextual information, we propose a unified IQA framework that utilizes CNN backbone and transformer encoder to extract features. The proposed framework is compatible with both FR and NR modes and allows for a joint training scheme. Evaluation experiments on three standard IQA datasets, i.e., LIVE, CSIQ and TID2013, and KONIQ-10K, show that our proposed model can achieve state-of-the-art FR performance. In addition, comparable NR performance is achieved in extensive experiments, and the results show that the NR performance can be leveraged by the joint training scheme.

Two-stream Hierarchical Similarity Reasoning for Image-text Matching

Reasoning-based approaches have demonstrated their powerful ability for the task of image-text matching. In this work, two issues are addressed for image-text matching. First, for reasoning processing, conventional approaches have no ability to find and use multi-level hierarchical similarity information. To solve this problem, a hierarchical similarity reasoning module is proposed to automatically extract context information, which is then co-exploited with local interaction information for efficient reasoning. Second, previous approaches only consider learning single-stream similarity alignment (i.e., image-to-text level or text-to-image level), which is inadequate to fully use similarity information for image-text matching. To address this issue, a two-stream architecture is developed to decompose image-text matching into image-to-text level and text-to-image level similarity computation. These two issues are investigated by a unifying framework that is trained in an end-to-end manner, namely two-stream hierarchical similarity reasoning network. The extensive experiments performed on the two benchmark datasets of MSCOCO and Flickr30K show the superiority of the proposed approach as compared to existing state-of-the-art methods.

RRNet: Relational Reasoning Network with Parallel Multi-scale Attention for Salient Object Detection in Optical Remote Sensing Images

Salient object detection (SOD) for optical remote sensing images (RSIs) aims at locating and extracting visually distinctive objects/regions from the optical RSIs. Despite some saliency models were proposed to solve the intrinsic problem of optical RSIs (such as complex background and scale-variant objects), the accuracy and completeness are still unsatisfactory. To this end, we propose a relational reasoning network with parallel multi-scale attention for SOD in optical RSIs in this paper. The relational reasoning module that integrates the spatial and the channel dimensions is designed to infer the semantic relationship by utilizing high-level encoder features, thereby promoting the generation of more complete detection results. The parallel multi-scale attention module is proposed to effectively restore the detail information and address the scale variation of salient objects by using the low-level features refined by multi-scale attention. Extensive experiments on two datasets demonstrate that our proposed RRNet outperforms the existing state-of-the-art SOD competitors both qualitatively and quantitatively.

Distortion-Aware Loop Filtering of Intra 360^o Video Coding with Equirectangular Projection

In this paper, we propose a distortion-aware loop filtering model to improve the performance of intra coding for 360$^o$ videos projected via equirectangular projection (ERP) format. To enable the awareness of distortion, our proposed module analyzes content characteristics based on a coding unit (CU) partition mask and processes them through partial convolution to activate the specified area. The feature recalibration module, which leverages cascaded residual channel-wise attention blocks (RCABs) to adjust the inter-channel and intra-channel features automatically, is capable of adapting with different quality levels. The perceptual geometry optimization combining with weighted mean squared error (WMSE) and the perceptual loss guarantees both the local field of view (FoV) and global image reconstruction with high quality. Extensive experimental results show that our proposed scheme achieves significant bitrate savings compared with the anchor (HM + 360Lib), leading to 8.9%, 9.0%, 7.1% and 7.4% on average bit rate reductions in terms of PSNR, WPSNR, and PSNR of two viewports for luminance component of 360^o videos, respectively.

Generalized Visual Quality Assessment of GAN-Generated Face Images

Recent years have witnessed the dramatically increased interest in face generation with generative adversarial networks (GANs). A number of successful GAN algorithms have been developed to produce vivid face images towards different application scenarios. However, little work has been dedicated to automatic quality assessment of such GAN-generated face images (GFIs), even less have been devoted to generalized and robust quality assessment of GFIs generated with unseen GAN model. Herein, we make the first attempt to study the subjective and objective quality towards generalized quality assessment of GFIs. More specifically, we establish a large-scale database consisting of GFIs from four GAN algorithms, the pseudo labels from image quality assessment (IQA) measures, as well as the human opinion scores via subjective testing. Subsequently, we develop a quality assessment model that is able to deliver accurate quality predictions for GFIs from both available and unseen GAN algorithms based on meta-learning. In particular, to learn shared knowledge from GFIs pairs that are born of limited GAN algorithms, we develop the convolutional block attention (CBA) and facial attributes-based analysis (ABA) modules, ensuring that the learned knowledge tends to be consistent with human visual perception. Extensive experiments exhibit that the proposed model achieves better performance compared with the state-of-the-art IQA models, and is capable of retaining the effectiveness when evaluating GFIs from the unseen GAN algorithms.

CSformer: Bridging Convolution and Transformer for Compressive Sensing

Convolution neural networks (CNNs) have succeeded in compressive image sensing. However, due to the inductive bias of locality and weight sharing, the convolution operations demonstrate the intrinsic limitations in modeling the long-range dependency. Transformer, designed initially as a sequence-to-sequence model, excels at capturing global contexts due to the self-attention-based architectures even though it may be equipped with limited localization abilities. This paper proposes CSformer, a hybrid framework that integrates the advantages of leveraging both detailed spatial information from CNN and the global context provided by transformer for enhanced representation learning. The proposed approach is an end-to-end compressive image sensing method, composed of adaptive sampling and recovery. In the sampling module, images are measured block-by-block by the learned sampling matrix. In the reconstruction stage, the measurement is projected into dual stems. One is the CNN stem for modeling the neighborhood relationships by convolution, and the other is the transformer stem for adopting global self-attention mechanism. The dual branches structure is concurrent, and the local features and global representations are fused under different resolutions to maximize the complementary of features. Furthermore, we explore a progressive strategy and window-based transformer block to reduce the parameter and computational complexity. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the dedicated transformer-based architecture for compressive sensing, which achieves superior performance compared to state-of-the-art methods on different datasets.

Deep Selective Combinatorial Embedding and Consistency Regularization for Light Field Super-resolution

Light field (LF) images acquired by hand-held devices usually suffer from low spatial resolution as the limited detector resolution has to be shared with the angular dimension. LF spatial super-resolution (SR) thus becomes an indispensable part of the LF camera processing pipeline. The high-dimensionality characteristic and complex geometrical structure of LF images make the problem more challenging than traditional single-image SR. The performance of existing methods is still limited as they fail to thoroughly explore the coherence among LF sub-aperture images (SAIs) and are insufficient in accurately preserving the scene's parallax structure. To tackle this challenge, we propose a novel learning-based LF spatial SR framework. Specifically, each SAI of an LF image is first coarsely and individually super-resolved by exploring the complementary information among SAIs with selective combinatorial geometry embedding. To achieve efficient and effective selection of the complementary information, we propose two novel sub-modules conducted hierarchically: the patch selector provides an option of retrieving similar image patches based on offline disparity estimation to handle large-disparity correlations; and the SAI selector adaptively and flexibly selects the most informative SAIs to improve the embedding efficiency. To preserve the parallax structure among the reconstructed SAIs, we subsequently append a consistency regularization network trained over a structure-aware loss function to refine the parallax relationships over the coarse estimation. In addition, we extend the proposed method to irregular LF data. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first learning-based SR method for irregular LF data. Experimental results over both synthetic and real-world LF datasets demonstrate the significant advantage of our approach over state-of-the-art methods.

Cross-modality Discrepant Interaction Network for RGB-D Salient Object Detection

The popularity and promotion of depth maps have brought new vigor and vitality into salient object detection (SOD), and a mass of RGB-D SOD algorithms have been proposed, mainly concentrating on how to better integrate cross-modality features from RGB image and depth map. For the cross-modality interaction in feature encoder, existing methods either indiscriminately treat RGB and depth modalities, or only habitually utilize depth cues as auxiliary information of the RGB branch. Different from them, we reconsider the status of two modalities and propose a novel Cross-modality Discrepant Interaction Network (CDINet) for RGB-D SOD, which differentially models the dependence of two modalities according to the feature representations of different layers. To this end, two components are designed to implement the effective cross-modality interaction: 1) the RGB-induced Detail Enhancement (RDE) module leverages RGB modality to enhance the details of the depth features in low-level encoder stage. 2) the Depth-induced Semantic Enhancement (DSE) module transfers the object positioning and internal consistency of depth features to the RGB branch in high-level encoder stage. Furthermore, we also design a Dense Decoding Reconstruction (DDR) structure, which constructs a semantic block by combining multi-level encoder features to upgrade the skip connection in the feature decoding. Extensive experiments on five benchmark datasets demonstrate that our network outperforms $15$ state-of-the-art methods both quantitatively and qualitatively. Subjective Quality Database and Objective Study of Compressed Point Clouds With 6DoF Head-Mounted Display

In this paper, we focus on subjective and objective Point Cloud Quality Assessment (PCQA) in an immersive environment and study the effect of geometry and texture attributes in compression distortion. Using a Head-Mounted Display (HMD) with six degrees of freedom, we establish a subjective PCQA database, named SIAT Point Cloud Quality Database (SIAT-PCQD). Our database consists of 340 distorted point clouds compressed by the MPEG point cloud encoder with the combination of 20 sequences and 17 pairs of geometry and texture quantization parameters. The impact of distorted geometry and texture attributes is further discussed in this paper. Then, we propose two projection-based objective quality evaluation methods, i.e., a weighted view projection based model and a patch projection based model. Our subjective database and findings can be used in point cloud processing, transmission, and coding, especially for virtual reality applications. The subjective dataset has been released in the public repository.

BridgeNet: A Joint Learning Network of Depth Map Super-Resolution and Monocular Depth Estimation

Depth map super-resolution is a task with high practical application requirements in the industry. Existing color-guided depth map super-resolution methods usually necessitate an extra branch to extract high-frequency detail information from RGB image to guide the low-resolution depth map reconstruction. However, because there are still some differences between the two modalities, direct information transmission in the feature dimension or edge map dimension cannot achieve satisfactory result, and may even trigger texture copying in areas where the structures of the RGB-D pair are inconsistent. Inspired by the multi-task learning, we propose a joint learning network of depth map super-resolution (DSR) and monocular depth estimation (MDE) without introducing additional supervision labels. For the interaction of two subnetworks, we adopt a differentiated guidance strategy and design two bridges correspondingly. One is the high-frequency attention bridge (HABdg) designed for the feature encoding process, which learns the high-frequency information of the MDE task to guide the DSR task. The other is the content guidance bridge (CGBdg) designed for the depth map reconstruction process, which provides the content guidance learned from DSR task for MDE task. The entire network architecture is highly portable and can provide a paradigm for associating the DSR and MDE tasks. Extensive experiments on benchmark datasets demonstrate that our method achieves competitive performance. Our code and models are available at https://rmcong.github.io/proj_BridgeNet.html.
