Anomalous Magnetothermopower in a Metallic Frustrated Antiferromagnet

We report the temperature $T$ and magnetic field $H$ dependence of the thermopower $S$ of an itinerant triangular antiferromagnet PdCrO$_2$ in high magnetic fields up to 32 T. In the paramagnetic phase, the zero-field thermopower is positive with a value typical of good metals with a high carrier density. In marked contrast to typical metals, however, $S$ decreases rapidly with increasing magnetic field, approaching zero at the maximum field scale for $T >$ 70 K. We argue here that this profound change in the thermoelectric response derives from the strong interaction of the 4$d$ correlated electrons of the Pd ions with the short-range spin correlations of the Cr$^{3+}$ spins that persist beyond the Néel ordering temperature due to the combined effects of geometrical frustration and low dimensionality.

55~Tesla coercive magnetic field in frustrated Sr$_3$NiIrO$_6$

We have measured extremely large coercive magnetic fields of up to 55~T in Sr$_3$NiIrO$_6$, with a switched magnetic moment $\approx 0.8~μ_{\rm B}$ per formula unit. As far as we are aware, this is the largest coercive field observed thus far. This extraordinarily hard magnetism has a completely different origin from that found in conventional ferromagnets. Instead, it is due to the evolution of a frustrated antiferromagnetic state in the presence of strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy due to the overlap of spatially-extended Ir$^{4+}$ 5$d$ orbitals with oxygen 2$p$ and Ni$^{2+}$ 3$d$ orbitals. This work highlights the unusual physics that can result from combining the extended $5d$ orbitals in Ir$^{4+}$ with the frustrated behaviour of triangular lattice antiferromagnets.

Low-moment magnetism in the double perovskites Ba2MOsO6 (M=Li,Na)

The magnetic ground states of the isostructural double perovskites Ba$_2$NaOsO$_6$ and Ba$_2$LiOsO$_6$ are investigated with muon-spin rotation. In Ba$_2$NaOsO$_6$ long-range magnetic order is detected via the onset of a spontaneous muon-spin precession signal below $T_{\mathrm{c}}=7.2\pm 0.2\;\mathrm{K}$, while in Ba$_2$LiOsO$_6$ a static but spatially-disordered internal field is found below 8 K. A novel probabilistic argument is used to show from the observed precession frequencies that the magnetic ground state in Ba$_2$NaOsO$_6$ is most likely to be low-moment ($\approx 0.2$\,$μ_{\rm B}$) ferromagnetism and not canted antiferromagnetism. Ba$_2$LiOsO$_6$ is antiferromagnetic and we find a spin-flop transition at 5.5\,T. A reduced osmium moment is common to both compounds, probably arising from a combination of spin-orbit coupling and frustration.
