Squeezing as a catalyst for non-Gaussian advantage in characterization of nonlinear media

We address the precise characterization of coupling strength of nonlinear media in continuous-variable (CV) quantum systems using coherent and squeezed vacuum states as Gaussian probes, together with their photon-added and photon-subtracted counterparts as non-Gaussian probes. We consider three main classes of nonlinear Hamiltonians, namely quadrature nonlinearities, generalized squeezing and Kerr-type interactions. By analytically evaluating the quantum Fisher information (QFI), we compare the performance of Gaussian and non-Gaussian probes and assess the optimal probe based on the probe parameters, energy resource and non-Gaussianity. Our results are twofold as follows: first, for coherent-state family, the improvement provided by photon addition at fixed coherent amplitude originates mainly from the extra energy carried by the probe and does not provide a genuine metrological resource, since the same precision can be achieved by a Gaussian coherent-state signal of a larger energy, which can be more easily produced. Second, in contrast, photon addition and subtraction become effective resources when applied to already nonclassical states such as squeezed vacuum states. In this case, they lead to a significant enhancement of the QFI, particularly for higher-order interactions. Although Gaussian squeezed states remain optimal at equal energy constraint, photon-added and photon-subtracted squeezed states achieve comparable sensitives with significantly lower squeezing requirements. Since large squeezing level remains experimentally challenging, these non-Gaussian probes offer a practical route towards enhanced estimation of the nonlinear coupling strength within currently accessible squeezing regimes.

On Markovianity and classicality in multilevel spin-boson models

We provide a detailed discussion about the unitary and reduced evolution induced by family of Hamiltonian models describing a multilevel system, with a ground state and a possibly multilevel excited sector, coupled to a multimode boson field via a rotating-wave interaction. We prove explicitly that the system, in the limit in which the coupling is flat with respect to the boson frequencies, is Markovian under sharp measurements in arbitrary bases; we also find necessary and sufficient conditions under which the process is classical, i.e. its family of multitime joint probability distributions satisfies the Kolmogorov consistency condition, and may thus be equivalently obtained by a classical stochastic process.

Memory effects displayed in the evolution of continuous variable system

We analyze non-Markovian memory effects displayed by the quantum Brownian motion modelled as quantum harmonic oscillators coupled to a bath consisting of harmonic oscillators. We study the time evolution of fidelity, Petz-Rényi relative entropy and quantum entanglement for a family of 1-, 2- and 3-mode Gaussian states.

Exploiting Gaussian steering to probe non-Markovianity due to the interaction with a structured environment

We put forward a measure based on Gaussian steering to quantify the non-Markovianity of continuous-variable (CV) Gaussian quantum channels. We employ the proposed measure to assess and compare the non-Markovianity of a quantum Brownian motion (QBM) channel, originating from the interaction with Ohmic and sub-Ohmic environments with spectral densities described by a Lorentz-Drude cutoff, both at high and low temperatures, showing that sub-Ohmic, high temperature environments lead to highly non-Markovian evolution, with cyclic backflows of Gaussian steerability from the environment to the system. Our results add to the understanding of the interplay between quantum correlations and non-Markovianity for CV systems, and could be implemented at the experimental level to quantify non-Markovianity in some physical scenarios.

Non-Markovian evolution of a two-level system interacting with a fluctuating classical field via dipole interaction

We address memory effects in the dynamics of a two-level open quantum system interacting with a classical fluctuating field via dipole interaction. In particular, we study the backflow of information for a field with a Lorentzian spectrum, and reveal the existence of two working regimes, where memory effects are governed either by the energy gap of the two-level system, or by the interaction energy. Our results shows that non-Markovianity increases with time, at variance with the results obtained for dephasing and despite the dissipative nature of the interaction, thus suggesting that the corresponding memory effects might be observed in practical scenarios.
