An Introduction to Measurement Uncertainty

This chapter introduces the fundamental principles of metrology and the concept of measurement uncertainty. It explains the role of measurement in engineering and manufacturing, outlines the distinction between error and uncertainty, and presents standard methods for evaluating uncertainty, including the GUM framework, uncertainty budgets, and Monte Carlo simulation. Practical examples and industrial standards are discussed to illustrate real-world applications.

Looking down the rabbit hole: Towards quantum optimal estimation of surface roughness

Surface roughness is an important quantity to many engineering and precision manufacturing disciplines. In this paper we investigate the problem of estimating the root-mean-square roughness of a sample by passive linear optics. By adopting quantum parameter estimation methods, we determine the ultimate precision limits for estimating spatial moments of a general three-dimensional distribution of incoherent point sources in the sub-diffraction regime. Specializing this result to the axial profile, we show that the information on the first moment (mean height) and standard deviation (roughness) is bounded by a constant. While classical imaging techniques fail to achieve this bound, a quantum inspired imaging technique based on spatial mode demultiplexing is proven to be optimal for estimating the axial standard deviation. This provides a powerful and experimentally accessible route to measuring roughness of nearly smooth surface patches beyond the diffraction limit.

Quantum Limits of Passive Optical Surface Metrology and Defect Detection

We develop a quantum statistical framework for passive optical surface metrology. Modelling a surface as an incoherent ensemble of point emitters imaged through a diffraction-limited system, we employ techniques from quantum parameter estimation and hypothesis testing to derive ultimate bounds for jointly estimating geometrical features and for deciding the presence or absence of surface defects, and we identify optimal measurements from the geometry of the point-spread-function manifold. As a representative application, we analyse a minimal surface crack model based on three point sources and show that spatial mode sorting can simultaneously enable near-quantum-limited estimation of crack width and depth and markedly enhanced detectability of the crack, compared with direct imaging. Our results pave the way towards enhanced optical inspection and characterisation of sub-diffraction surface features by probing a limited number of spatial modes without any illumination control.

Deep Learning-based Single-Shot Composite Fringe Projection Profilometry with Pixel-Wise Uncertainty Quantification

Driven by the growing demand for high-speed 3D measurement in advanced manufacturing, optical metrology algorithms must deliver high accuracy and robustness under dynamic conditions. Fringe projection profilometry (FPP) offers high precision, yet the 2pi ambiguity of the wrapped phase means that conventional absolute phase recovery typically relies on multiple coded patterns, sacrificing temporal resolution. Deep learning-based composite FPP (CFPP) shows promise for single-shot phase recovery from a composite fringe, but limited interpretability makes it difficult to assess reconstruction reliability or trace error sources in the absence of ground truth. To address this, we propose HSURE-CFPP (Heteroscedastic Snapshot-ensemble Uncertainty-aware Ratio Estimation for CFPP). HSURE-CFPP predicts the numerator-denominator ratio used for wrapped-phase computation with a heteroscedastic snapshot-ensemble network, enabling ultra-fast 3D imaging from a single composite fringe and producing pixel-wise uncertainty maps for confidence assessment and unreliable-region identification. Specifically, a heteroscedastic likelihood jointly estimates pixel-wise noise variance to capture data uncertainty, while a snapshot ensemble quantifies model uncertainty via dispersion across snapshots, yielding total predictive uncertainty as an interpretable reliability measure. Experiments on static and dynamic scenes demonstrate that HSURE-CFPP achieves high-accuracy reconstruction at high speed and that the predicted uncertainty correlates well with reconstruction errors, providing a deployable quality-assessment mechanism for deep-learning-based FPP.

General expressions for the quantum Fisher information matrix with applications to discrete quantum imaging

The quantum Fisher information matrix is a central object in multiparameter quantum estimation theory. It is usually challenging to obtain analytical expressions for it because most calculation methods rely on the diagonalization of the density matrix. In this paper, we derive general expressions for the quantum Fisher information matrix which bypass matrix diagonalization and do not require the expansion of operators on an orthonormal set of states. Additionally, we can tackle density matrices of arbitrary rank. The methods presented here simplify analytical calculations considerably when, for example, the density matrix is more naturally expressed in terms of non-orthogonal states, such as coherent states. Our derivation relies on two matrix inverses which, in principle, can be evaluated analytically even when the density matrix is not diagonalizable in closed form. We demonstrate the power of our approach by deriving novel results in the timely field of discrete quantum imaging: the estimation of positions and intensities of incoherent point sources. We find analytical expressions for the full estimation problem of two point sources with different intensities, and for specific examples with three point sources. We expect that our method will become standard in quantum metrology.

Towards superresolution surface metrology: Quantum estimation of angular and axial separations

We investigate the localization of two incoherent point sources with arbitrary angular and axial separations in the paraxial approximation. By using quantum metrology techniques, we show that a simultaneous estimation of the two separations is achievable by a single quantum measurement, with a precision saturating the ultimate limit stemming from the quantum Cramér-Rao bound. Such a precision is not degraded in the sub-wavelength regime, thus overcoming the traditional limitations of classical direct imaging derived from Rayleigh's criterion. Our results are qualitatively independent of the point spread function of the imaging system, and quantitatively illustrated in detail for the Gaussian instance. This analysis may have relevant applications in three-dimensional surface measurements.

Theory of genuine tripartite nonlocality of Gaussian states

We investigate the genuine multipartite nonlocality of three-mode Gaussian states of continuous variable systems. For pure states, we present a simplified procedure to obtain the maximum violation of the Svetlichny inequality based on displaced parity measurements, and we analyze its interplay with genuine tripartite entanglement measured via Renyi-2 entropy. The maximum Svetlichny violation admits tight upper and lower bounds at fixed tripartite entanglement. For mixed states, no violation is possible when the purity falls below 0.86. We also explore a set of recently derived weaker inequalities for three-way nonlocality, finding violations for all tested pure states. Our results provide a strong signature for the nonclassical and nonlocal nature of Gaussian states despite their positive Wigner function, and lead to precise recipes for its experimental verification.

Genuine tripartite entanglement and nonlocality in Bose-Einstein condensates by collective atomic recoil

We study a system represented by a Bose-Einstein condensate interacting with a cavity field in presence of a strong off-resonant pumping laser. This system can be described by a three-mode Gaussian state, where two are the atomic modes corresponding to atoms populating upper and lower momentum sidebands and the third mode describes the scattered cavity field light. We show that, as a consequence of the collective atomic recoil instability, these modes possess a genuine tripartite entanglement that increases unboundedly with the evolution time and is larger than the bipartite entanglement in any reduced two-mode bipartition. We further show that the state of the system exhibits genuine tripartite nonlocality, which can be revealed by a robust violation of the Svetlichny inequality when performing displaced parity measurements. Our exact results are obtained by exploiting the powerful machinery of phase-space informational measures for Gaussian states, which we briefly review in the opening sections of the paper.

Andreev reflection in ferrimagnetic CoFe2O4/SrRuO3 spin filters

We have performed point contact spectroscopy measurements on a sample constituted by a metallic ferromagnetic oxide (SrRuO_3) bottom electrode and a tunnel ferrimagnetic (CoFe_2O_4) barrier. Andreev reflection is observed across the tunnel barrier. From the comparison of Andreev reflection in SrRuO3 and across the CoFe_2O_4 barrier we infer that the ferrimagnetic barrier has a spin filter efficiency not larger than +13%. The observation of a moderate and positive spin filtering is discussed in the context of the microstructure of the barriers and symmetry-related spin filtering effects.

Electrical and magnetic properties of nano-scale Pi-junctions

The physics of the "Pi" phase shift in ferromagnetic Josephson junctions enables a range of applications for spin-electronic devices and quantum computing. In this respect our research is devoted to the evaluation of the best materials for the development and the realization of the quantum devices based on superconductors and at the same point towards the reduction of the size of the employed heterostructures towards and below nano-scale. In this chapter we report our investigation of transitions from "0" to "Pi" states in Nb Josephson junctions with strongly ferromagnetic barriers of Co, Ni, Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$ (Py) and Fe. We show that it is possible to fabricate nanostructured Nb/ Ni(Co, Py, Fe)/Nb $π$-junctions with a nano-scale magnetic dead layer and with a high level of control over the ferromagnetic barrier thickness variation. In agreement with the theoretical model we estimate, from the oscillations of the critical current as function of the ferromagnetic barrier thickness, the exchange energy of the ferromagnetic material and we obtain that it is close to bulk ferromagnetic materials implying that the ferromagnet is clean and S/F roughness is minimal. We conclude that S/F/S Josephson junctions are viable structures in the development of superconductor-based quantum electronic devices; in particular Nb/Co/Nb and Nb/Fe/Nb multilayers with their low value of the magnetic dead layer and high value of the exchange energy can readily be used in controllable two-level quantum information systems. In this respect, we discuss applications of our nano-junctions to engineering magnetoresistive devices such as programmable pseudo-spin-valve Josephson structures.

0-pi oscillations in nanostructured Nb/Fe/Nb Josephson junctions

The physics of the $π$ phase shift in ferromagnetic Josephson junctions may enable a range of applications for spin-electronic devices and quantum computing. We investigate transitions from ``0'' to ``$π$'' states in Nb/Fe/Nb Josephson junctions by varying the Fe barrier thickness from 0.5 nm to 5.5 nm. From magnetic measurements we estimate for Fe a magnetic dead layer of about 1.1 nm. By fitting the characteristic voltage oscillations with existing theoretical models we extrapolate an exchange energy of 256 meV, a Fermi velocity of $1.98 \times 10^5$ m/s and an electron mean free path of 6.2 nm, in agreement with other reported values. From the temperature dependence of the $I_CR_N$ product we show that its decay rate exhibits a nonmonotonic oscillatory behavior with the Fe barrier thickness.

Point-Contact Spectroscopy on RuSr2GdCu2O8

We present Point-Contact experiments on polycrystalline RuSr$_2$GdCu$_2$O$_8$ samples. The majority of tunneling curves shows a zero-bias conductance peak, which is modeled by assuming a d-wave pairing symmetry of the superconducting order parameter. The magnetic field dependence of the conductance spectra has been measured in very stable junctions. In some cases, due to the granularity of the samples, clusters of grains in series introduce peculiar features in the conductance spectra.

Point Contact Spectra on YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$/La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ bilayers

We present conductance characteristics of point contact junctions realized between a normal Pt-Ir tip and YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$/La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ (YBCO/LCMO) bilayers. The point contact characteristics show a zero bias conductance peak, as a consequence of the formation of Andreev bound states at the YBCO Fermi level. The temperature evolution of the spectra reveals a depressed zero bias peak and a reduced superconducting energy gap, both explainable in terms of spin polarization effects due to the LCMO layer.

Subharmonic gap structures and Josephson effect in MgB2/Nb micro-constrictions

Superconducting micro-constrictions between Nb tips and high quality MgB$_{2}$ pellets have been realized by means of a point-contact inset, driven by a micrometric screw. Measurements of the current-voltage characteristics and of the dynamical conductance versus bias have been performed in the temperature range between 4.2 K and 500 K. Above the Nb critical temperature T$_{C}^{Nb}$, the conductance of the MgB$_2$/normal-metal constrictions behaves as predicted by the BTK model for low resistance contacts while high resistance junctions show quasiparticle tunneling characteristics. Consistently, from the whole set of data we infer the value $Δ_π = 2.5 \pm 0.2$ meV for the three-dimensional gap of MgB$_2$. Below T$_{C}^{Nb}$, low resistance contacts show Josephson current and subharmonic gap structures (SGS), due to multiple Andreev reflections. Simultaneous observations of both features, unambiguously indicate coupling of the 3D band of MgB$_2$ with the Nb superconducting order parameter. We found that the temperature dependence of the Josephson critical current follows the classical Ambegaokar-Baratoff behavior with a value $I_CR_N=(2.1 \pm 0.1)$ meV at low temperatures.

Pairing state in the rutheno-cuprate superconductor RuSr2GdCu2O8: A point contact Andreev Reflection Spectroscopy study

The results of Point Contact Andreev Reflection Spectroscopy on polycrystalline RuSr$_2$GdCu$_2$O$_8$ pellets are presented. The wide variety of the measured spectra are all explained in terms of a modified BTK model considering a \emph{d-wave} symmetry of the superconducting order parameter. Remarkably low values of the energy gap $Δ=(2.8\pm 0.2)meV$ and of the $2Δ/k_BT_c\simeq 2$ ratio are inferred. From the temperature evolution of the $dI/dV$ vs $V$ characteristics we extract a sublinear temperature dependence of the superconducting energy gap. The magnetic field dependence of the conductance spectra at low temperatures is also reported. From the $Δ$ vs $H$ evolution, a critical magnetic field $H_{c_2}\simeq 30 T$ is inferred. To properly explain the curves showing gap-like features at higher voltages, we consider the formation of a Josephson junction in series with the Point Contact junction, as a consequence of the granularity of the sample.

Point Contact Study of the Superconducting Order Parameter in RuSr2GdCu2O8

We have performed a detailed study of the conductance characteristics obtained by point contact junctions realized between a normal Pt/Ir tip and syntered RuSr2GdCu2O8 (Ru-1212) samples. Indeed, this compound is subject of great interest due to the coexistence of both magnetic order and bulk superconductivity. In our experiments, the low temperature tunneling spectra reproducibly show a zero bias conductance peak that can be well reproduced by a generalized BTK model in the case of d-wave symmetry of the superconducting order parameter.
