Which AdS3 configurations contribute to the SCFT2 elliptic genus?

According to the AdS/CFT duality, the superconformal index of a superconformal field theory should have an AdS interpretation as a Euclidean functional integral with periodic boundary conditions on the fermions. Unlike the thermal case, the Euclidean continuation of the supersymmetric AdS black hole does not smoothly fill in these boundary conditions, leading us to ask the title question. In the context of AdS3/CFT2, we show using supersymmetric localization that the gravitational functional integral for the elliptic genus localizes onto asymptotically AdS3 configurations that are annihilated by a certain supercharge, in the relevant off-shell supergravity theory. For (0,4) superconformal field theories, we find such a localizing configuration in the 5d ${\cal N}=2$ off-shell supergravity theory that is asymptotically $AdS_3 \times S^2$. This configuration interpolates smoothly between the supersymmetric BTZ black hole in the interior and a constant gauge field configuration at the boundary, thus smoothly filling in the (++) boundary conditions for spinors on the boundary torus. It has an action equal to the supersymmetric BTZ black hole, holomorphic in the complex structure $τ$ of the boundary torus. Our results have interesting implications for the black hole Farey tail in AdS3, as well as for higher dimensional AdS theories.

Supersymmetric Index from Black Hole Entropy

For BPS black holes with at least four unbroken supercharges, we describe how the macroscopic entropy can be used to compute an appropriate index, which can be then compared with the same index computed in the microscopic description. We obtain exact results incorporating all higher order quantum corrections in the limit when only one of the charges, representing momentum along an internal direction, approaches infinity keeping all other charges fixed at arbitrary finite values. In this limit, we find that the microscopic index is controlled by certain anomaly coefficients whereas the macroscopic index is controlled by the coefficients of certain Chern-Simons terms in the effective action. The equality between the macroscopic and the microscopic index then follows as a consequence of anomaly inflow. In contrast, the absolute degeneracy does not have any such simple expression in terms of the anomaly coefficients or coefficients of Chern-Simons terms. We apply our analysis to several examples of spinning black holes in five dimensions and non-spinning black holes in four dimensions to compute the index exactly in the limit when only one of the charges becomes large, and find perfect agreement with the result of exact microscopic counting. Our analysis resolves a puzzle involving M5-branes wrapped on a 5-cycle in K3 x T^3.

Stringy effects in black hole decay

We compute the low energy decay rates of near-extremal three(four) charge black holes in five(four) dimensional N=4 string theory to sub-leading order in the large charge approximation. This involves studying stringy corrections to scattering amplitudes of a scalar field off a black hole. We adapt and use recently developed techniques to compute such amplitudes as near-horizon quantities. We then compare this with the corresponding calculation in the microscopic configuration carrying the same charges as the black hole. We find perfect agreement between the microscopic and macroscopic calculations; in the cases we study, the zero energy limit of the scattering cross section is equal to four times the Wald entropy of the black hole.

No entropy enigmas for N=4 dyons

We explain why multi-centered black hole configurations where at least one of the centers is a large black hole do not contribute to the indexed degeneracies in theories with N=4 supersymmetry. This is a consequence of the fact that such configurations, although supersymmetric, belong to long supermultiplets. As a result, there is no entropy enigma in N=4 theories, unlike in N=2 theories.

Corrections to the statistical entropy of five dimensional black holes

We compute the statistical entropy of the three charge (D1-D5-p) five dimensional black hole to sub-leading order in a large charge expansion. We find an agreement with the macroscopic calculation of the Wald entropy in R^2 corrected supergravity theory. The two calculations have a overlapping regime of validity which is not the Cardy regime. We use this result to clarify the 4d-5d lift for black holes on Taub-NUT space. In particular, we compute sub-leading corrections to the formula S^{4d} = S^{5d}. In the microscopic analysis, this correction arises from excitations bound to the Taub-NUT space. In the macroscopic picture, the difference is accounted by a mechanism present in a higher derivative theory wherein the geometry of the Taub-NUT space absorbes some of the electric charge.

A Farey tale for N=4 dyons

We study exponentially suppressed contributions to the degeneracies of extremal black holes. Within Sen's quantum entropy function framework and focusing on extremal black holes with an intermediate AdS3 region, we identify an infinite family of semi-classical AdS2 geometries which can contribute effects of order exp(S_0/c), where S_0 is the Bekenstein-Hawking-Wald entropy and c is an integer greater than one. These solutions lift to the extremal limit of the SL(2,Z) family of BTZ black holes familiar from the "black hole Farey tail". We test this understanding in N=4 string vacua, where exact dyon degeneracies are known to be given by Fourier coefficients of Siegel modular forms. We relate the sum over poles in the Siegel upper half plane to the Farey tail expansion, and derive a "Farey tale" expansion for the dyon partition function. Mathematically, this provides a (formal) lift from Hilbert modular forms to Siegel modular forms with a pole at the diagonal divisor.

Counting all dyons in N =4 string theory

For dyons in heterotic string theory compactified on a six-torus, with electric charge vector Q and magnetic charge vector P, the positive integer I = g.c.d.(Q \wedge P) is an invariant of the U-duality group. We propose the microscopic theory for computing the spectrum of all dyons for all values of I, generalizing earlier results that exist only for the simplest case of I=1. Our derivation uses a combination of arguments from duality, 4d-5d lift, and a careful analysis of fermionic zero modes. The resulting degeneracy agrees with the black hole degeneracy for large charges and with the degeneracy of field-theory dyons for small charges. It naturally satisfies several physical requirements including integrality and duality invariance. As a byproduct, we also derive the microscopic (0,4) superconformal field theory relevant for computing the spectrum of five-dimensional Strominger-Vafa black holes in ALE backgrounds and count the resulting degeneracies.

Fundamental Superstrings as Holograms

The worldsheet of a macroscopic fundamental superstring in the Green-Schwarz light-cone gauge is viewed as a possible boundary hologram of the near horizon region of a small black string. For toroidally compactified strings, the hologram has global symmetries of AdS_3 \times S^{d-1} \times T^{8-d}, (d =3,..,8), only some of which extend to local conformal symmetries. We construct the bulk string theory in detail for the particular case of d=3. The symmetries of the hologram are correctly reproduced from this exact worldsheet description in the bulk. Moreover, the central charge of the boundary Virasoro algebra obtained from the bulk agrees with the Wald entropy of the associated small black holes. This construction provides an exact CFT description of the near horizon region of small black holes both in Type-II and heterotic string theory arising from multiply wound fundamental superstrings.

On supersymmetry breaking in string theory from gauge theory in a throat

We embed the supersymmetry breaking mechanism in N=1 SQCD of hep-th/0602239 in a smooth superstring theory using D-branes in the background R^4 \times SL(2)_{k=1}/U(1) which smoothly captures the throat region of an intersecting NS5-brane configuration. A controllable deformation of the supersymmetric branes gives rise to the mass deformation of the magnetic SQCD theory on the branes. The consequent instability on the open string worldsheet can be followed onto a stable non-supersymmetric configuration of D-branes which realize the metastable vacuum configuration in the field theory. The new brane configuration is shown to backreact onto the background such as to produce different boundary conditions for the string fields in the radial direction compared to the supersymmetric configuration. In the string theory, this is interpreted to mean that the supersymmetry breaking is explicit rather than spontaneous.

D-branes in non-critical superstrings and duality in N=1 gauge theories with flavor

We study D-branes in the superstring background R^{3,1} \times SL(2,R)_{k=1}/U(1) which are extended in the cigar direction. Some of these branes are new. The branes realize flavor in the four dimensional N=1 gauge theories on the D-branes localized at the tip of the cigar. We study the analytic properties of the boundary conformal field theories on these branes with respect to their defining parameter and find non-trivial monodromies in this parameter. Through this approach, we gain a better understanding of the brane set-ups in ten dimensions involving wrapped NS5-branes. As one application, using the boundary conformal field theory description of the electric and magnetic D-branes, we can understand electric-magnetic (Seiberg) duality in N=1 SQCD microscopically in a string theoretic context.

D-branes in Unoriented Non-critical Strings and Duality in SO(N) and Sp(N) Gauge Theories

We exhibit exact conformal field theory descriptions of SO(N) and Sp(N) pairs of Seiberg-dual gauge theories within string theory. The N=1 gauge theories with flavour are realized as low energy limits of the worldvolume theories on D-branes in unoriented non-critical superstring backgrounds. These unoriented backgrounds are obtained by constructing exact crosscap states in the SL(2,R)/U(1) coset conformal field theory using the modular bootstrap method. Seiberg duality is understood by studying the behaviour of the boundary and crosscap states under monodromy in the closed string parameter space.

Non-critical Heterotic Superstrings in Various Dimensions

We construct heterotic string theories on spacetimes of the form R^{d-1,1} times N=2 linear dilaton, where d=6,4,2,0. There are two lines of supersymmetric theories descending from the two supersymmetric ten-dimensional heterotic theories. These have gauge groups which are lower rank subgroups of E_{8} times E_{8} and SO(32). On turning on a (2,2) deformation which makes the two dimensional part a smooth SL_{2}(R)/U(1) supercoset, the gauge groups get broken further. In the deformed theories, there are non-trivial moduli which are charged under the surviving gauge group in the case of d=6. We construct the marginal operators on the worldsheet corresponding to these moduli.

Topological Cigar and the c=1 String : Open and Closed

We clarify some aspects of the map between the c=1 string theory at self-dual radius and the topologically twisted cigar at level one. We map the ZZ and FZZT D-branes in the c=1 string theory at self dual radius to the localized and extended branes in the topological theory on the cigar. We show that the open string spectrum on the branes in the two theories are in correspondence with each other, and their two point correlators are equal. We also find a representation of an extended N=2 algebra on the worldsheet which incorporates higher spin currents in terms of asymptotic variables on the cigar.

D-branes in non-critical superstrings and minimal super Yang-Mills in various dimensions

We construct and analyze D-branes in superstring theories in even dimensions less than ten. The backgrounds under study are supersymmetric R^{d-1,1} \times SL(2,R)_k / U(1) where the level of the supercoset is tuned such as to provide bona fide string theory backgrounds. We provide exact boundary states for D-branes that are localized at the tip of the cigar SL(2,R)/U(1) supercoset conformal field theory. We analyze the spectra of open strings on these D-branes and show explicitly that they are consistent with supersymmetry in d=2,4 and 6. The low energy theory on the world-volume of the D-brane in each case is pure Yang-Mills theory with minimal supersymmetry. In the case with four macroscopic flat directions d=4, we realize an N=1 super Yang-Mills theory. We interpret the backreaction for the dilaton as the running of the gauge coupling, and study the relation between R-symmetry breaking in the gauge theory and the backreaction on the RR axion.

Liouville D-branes in Two-Dimensional Strings and Open String Field Theory

We study open strings in the noncritical $c=1$ bosonic string theory compactified on a circle at self-dual radius. These strings live on D-branes that are extended along the Liouville direction ({\it FZZT} branes). We present explicit expressions for the disc two- and three-point functions of boundary operators in this theory, as well as the bulk-boundary two-point function. The expressions obtained are divergent because of resonant behaviour at self-dual radius. However, these can be regularised and renormalized in a precise way to get finite results. The boundary correlators are found to depend only on the differences of boundary cosmological constants, suggesting a fermionic behaviour. We initiate a study of the open-string field theory localised to the physical states, which leads to an interesting matrix model.

Two-dimensional superstrings and the supersymmetric matrix model

We present evidence that the supersymmetric matrix model of Marinari and Parisi represents the world-line theory of N unstable D-particles in type II superstring theory in two dimensions. This identification suggests that the matrix model gives a holographic description of superstrings in a two-dimensional black hole geometry.

Notes on Non-Critical Superstrings in Various Dimensions

We study non-critical superstrings propagating in $d \le 6$ dimensional Minkowski space or equivalently, superstrings propagating on the two-dimensional Euclidean black hole tensored with d-dimensional Minkowski space. We point out a subtlety in the construction of supersymmetric theories in these backgrounds, and explain how this does not allow a consistent geometric interpretation in terms of fields propagating on a cigar-like spacetime. We explain the global symmetries of the various theories by using their description as the near horizon geometry of wrapped NS5-brane configurations. In the six-dimensional theory, we present a CFT description of the four-dimensional moduli space and the global O(3) symmetry. The worldsheet action invariant under this symmetry contains both the N=2 sine-Liouville interaction and the cigar metric, thereby providing an example where the two interactions are naturally present in the same worldsheet lagrangian already at the non-dynamical level.
