Mechanical balance laws for two-dimensional Boussinesq systems

Most of the asymptotically derived Boussinesq systems of water wave theory for long waves of small amplitude fail to satisfy exact mechanical conservation laws for mass, momentum and energy. It is thus only fair to consider approximate conservation laws that hold in the context of these systems. Although such approximate mass, momentum and energy conservation laws can be derived, the question of a rigorous mathematical justification still remains unanswered. The aim of this paper is to justify the formally derived mechanical balance laws for weakly nonlinear and weakly dispersive water wave Boussinesq systems. In particular, two asymptotic expansions used for the formal and rigorous derivation of the Boussinesq systems and the same are employed for the derivation and rigorous justification of the balance laws. Numerical validation of the asymptotic orders of approximation is also presented.

Equations for small amplitude shallow water waves over small bathymetric variations

A generalized version of the $abcd$-Boussinesq class of systems is derived to accommodate variable bottom topography in two-dimensional space. This extension allows for the conservation of suitable energy functionals in some cases and enables the description of water waves in closed basins with well-justified slip-wall boundary conditions. The derived systems possess a form that ensures their solutions adhere to important principles of physics and mathematics. By demonstrating their consistency with the Euler equations and estimating their approximation error, we establish the validity of these new systems. Their derivation is based on the assumption of small bathymetric variations. With practical applications in mind, we assess the effectiveness of some of these new systems through comparisons with standard benchmarks. The results indicate that the assumptions made during the derivation are not overly restrictive. The applications of the new systems encompass a wide range of scenarios, including the study of tsunamis, tidal waves, and waves in ports and lakes.

Mathematical modeling and numerical analysis for the higher order Boussinesq system

This study deals with higher-ordered asymptotic equations for the water-waves problem. We considered the higher-order/extended Boussinesq equations over a flat bottom topography in the well-known long wave regime. Providing an existence and uniqueness of solution on a relevant time scale of order $1/\sqrt{\eps}$ and showing that the solution's behavior is close to the solution of the water waves equations with a better precision corresponding to initial data, the asymptotic model is well-posed in the sense of Hadamard. Then we compared several water waves solitary solutions with respect to the numerical solution of our model. At last, we solve explicitly this model and validate the results numerically.

A regularized shallow-water waves system with slip-wall boundary conditions in a basin: Theory and numerical analysis

The simulation of long, nonlinear dispersive waves in bounded domains usually requires the use of slip-wall boundary conditions. Boussinesq systems appearing in the literature are generally not well-posed when such boundary conditions are imposed, or if they are well-posed it is very cumbersome to implement the boundary conditions in numerical approximations. In the present paper a new Boussinesq system is proposed for the study of long waves of small amplitude in a basin when slip-wall boundary conditions are required. The new system is derived using asymptotic techniques under the assumption of small bathymetric variations, and a mathematical proof of well-posedness for the new system is developed. The new system is also solved numerically using a Galerkin finite-element method, where the boundary conditions are imposed with the help of Nitsche's method. Convergence of the numerical method is analyzed, and precise error estimates are provided. The method is then implemented, and the convergence is verified using numerical experiments. Numerical simulations for solitary waves shoaling on a plane slope are also presented. The results are compared to experimental data, and excellent agreement is found.

Approximate Conservation Laws in the KdV Equation

The Korteweg-de Vries equation is known to yield a valid description of surface waves for waves of small amplitude and large wavelength. The equation features a number of conserved integrals, but there is no consensus among scientists as to the physical meaning of these integrals. In particular, it is not clear whether these integrals are related to the conservation of momentum or energy, and some researchers have questioned the conservation of energy in the dynamics governed by the equation. In this note it is shown that while exact energy conservation may not hold, if momentum and energy densities and fluxes are defined in an appropriate way, then solutions of the Korteweg-de Vries equation give rise to approximate differential balance laws for momentum and energy.

A Mathematical Justification of the Momentum Density Function Associated to the KdV Equation

Consideration is given to the KdV equation as an approximate model for long waves of small amplitude at the free surface of an inviscid fluid. It is shown that there is an approximate momentum density associated to the KdV equation, and the difference between this density and the physical momentum density derived in the context of the full Euler equations can be estimated in terms of the long-wave parameter.

On the generalized nonlinear Camassa-Holm equation

In this paper, a generalized nonlinear Camassa-Holm equation with time- and space-dependent coefficients is considered. We show that the control of the higher order dispersive term is possible by using an adequate weight function to define the energy. The existence and uniqueness of solutions are obtained via a Picard iterative method.

Well-posedness of the Green-Naghdi and Boussinesq-Peregrine systems

In this paper we address the Cauchy problem for two systems modeling the propagation of long gravity waves in a layer of homogeneous, incompressible and inviscid fluid delimited above by a free surface, and below by a non-necessarily flat rigid bottom. Concerning the Green-Naghdi system, we improve the result of Alvarez-Samaniego and Lannes (Invent. Math., 2008) in the sense that much less regular data are allowed, and no loss of derivatives is involved. Concerning the Boussinesq-Peregrine system, we improve the lower bound on the time of existence provided by M{\'e}sognon-Gireau (Adv. Differential Equations, 2017). The main ingredient is a physically motivated change of unknowns revealing the quasilinear structure of the systems, from which energy methods are implemented.

An improved result for the full justification of asymptotic models for the propagation of internal waves

We consider here asymptotic models that describe the propagation of one-dimensional internal waves at the interface between two layers of immiscible fluids of different densities, under the rigid lid assumption and with uneven bottoms. The aim of this paper is to show that the full justification result of the model obtained by Duchêne, Israwi and Talhouk [{\em SIAM J. Math. Anal.}, 47(1), 240--290], in the sense that it is consistent, well-posed, and that its solutions remain close to exact solutions of the full Euler system with corresponding initial data, can be improved in two directions. The first direction is taking into account medium amplitude topography variations and the second direction is allowing strong nonlinearity using a new pseudo-symmetrizer, thus canceling out the smallness assumptions of the Camassa-Holm regime for the well-posedness and stability results.

A new class of two-layer Green-Naghdi systems with improved frequency dispersion

We introduce a new class of Green-Naghdi type models for the propagation of internal waves between two (1+1)-dimensional layers of homogeneous, immiscible, ideal, incompressible, irrotational fluids, vertically delimited by a flat bottom and a rigid lid. These models are tailored to improve the frequency dispersion of the original bi-layer Green-Naghdi model, and in particular to manage high-frequency Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities, while maintaining its precision in the sense of consistency. Our models preserve the Hamiltonian structure, symmetry groups and conserved quantities of the original model. We provide a rigorous justification of a class of our models thanks to consistency, well-posedness and stability results. These results apply in particular to the original Green-Naghdi model as well as to the Saint-Venant (hydrostatic shallow-water) system with surface tension.

Shallow water asymptotic models for the propagation of internal waves

We are interested in asymptotic models for the propagation of internal waves at the interface between two shallow layers of immiscible fluid, under the rigid-lid assumption. We review and complete existing works in the literature, in order to offer a unified and comprehensive exposition. Anterior models such as the shallow water and Boussinesq systems, as well as unidirectional models of Camassa-Holm type, are shown to descend from a broad Green-Naghdi model, that we introduce and justify in the sense of consistency. Contrarily to earlier works, our Green-Naghdi model allows a non-flat topography, and horizontal dimension d = 2. Its derivation follows directly from classical results concerning the one-layer case, and we believe such strategy may be used to construct interesting models in different regimes than the shallow-water/shallow-water studied in the present work.

A new fully justified asymptotic model for the propagation of internal waves in the Camassa-Holm regime

This study deals with asymptotic models for the propagation of one-dimensional internal waves at the interface between two layers of immiscible fluids of different densities, under the rigid lid assumption and with a flat bottom. We present a new Green-Naghdi type model in the Camassa-Holm (or medium amplitude) regime. This model is fully justified, in the sense that it is consistent, well-posed, and that its solutions remain close to exact solutions of the full Euler system with corresponding initial data. Moreover, our system allows to fully justify any well-posed and consistent lower order model; and in particular the so-called Constantin-Lannes approximation, which extends the classical Korteweg-de Vries equation in the Camassa-Holm regime.

Derivation and analysis of a new 2D Green-Naghdi system

We derive here a variant of the 2D Green-Naghdi equations that model the propagation of two-directional, nonlinear dispersive waves in shallow water. This new model has the same accuracy as the standard $2D $ Green-Naghdi equations. Its mathematical interest is that it allows a control of the rotational part of the (vertically averaged) horizontal velocity, which is not the case for the usual Green-Naghdi equations. Using this property, we show that the solution of these new equations can be constructed by a standard Picard iterative scheme so that there is no loss of regularity of the solution with respect to the initial condition. Finally, we prove that the new Green-Naghdi equations conserve the almost irrotationality of the vertically averaged horizontal component of the velocity.

Large Time existence For 1D Green-Naghdi equations

We consider here the $1D $ Green-Naghdi equations that are commonly used in coastal oceanography to describe the propagation of large amplitude surface waves. We show that the solution of the Green-Naghdi equations can be constructed by a standard Picard iterative scheme so that there is no loss of regularity of the solution with respect to the initial condition.

Variable depth KDV equations and generalizations to more nonlinear regimes

We study here the water-waves problem for uneven bottoms in a highly nonlinear regime where the small amplitude assumption of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation is enforced. It is known, that for such regimes, a generalization of the KdV equation (somehow linked to the Camassa-Holm equation) can be derived and justified by A. Constantin, D. Lannes "The hydrodynamical relevance of the Camassa-Holm and Degasperis-Processi equations" when the bottom is flat. We generalize here this result with a new class of equations taking into account variable bottom topographies. Of course, the many variable depth KdV equations existing in the literature are recovered as particular cases. Various regimes for the topography regimes are investigated and we prove consistency of these models, as well as a full justification for some of them. We also study the problem of wave breaking for our new variable depth and highly nonlinear generalizations of the KDV equations.
