Quantum State of a Gravitating Spacetime Region

We associate a gravitational Hilbert space $\mathbf{H}_\sigma$ to any closed compact $(d-1)$-manifold $\sigma$ with real metric. A quantum state $\mathcal{J}(\sigma)$ is a $d$-manifold bounded by $\sigma$ and equipped with elliptic data. An inner product is defined by gluing states pairwise across $\sigma$ and evaluated by viewing the resulting closed $d$-manifold as a boundary condition on the gravitational path integral (GPI) over $(d+1)$-manifolds. If $\sigma$ is nonempty and the GPI is dominated by a single $(d+1)$-manifold $M$ in the $G_N\to 0$ limit, then $M$ contains a Lorentzian CRT fixed-point set, providing $\mathcal{J}(\sigma)$ with a classical spacetime interpretation. Conversely, given a finite Lorentzian domain with edge $\sigma$, a state $\mathcal{J}(\sigma)$ may be associated to it by deforming its initial data off the real Lorentzian section and retaining only elliptic data. This establishes a broad correspondence between non-asymptotic spacetime regions and quantum states. Assuming that $\mathbf{H}_\sigma$ factorizes over connected components of $\sigma$, our framework admits operators and partial traces. This allows us to explore the information-theoretic structure of the states we define. As an example, we construct a family of states by deforming partial Cauchy slices $\Sigma$ that straddle a two-sided black hole; $\sigma$ consists of two spheres. We construct the reduced state on one sphere and find that its R\'enyi entropies are positive, monotonic, and sensitive to all aspects of $\Sigma$ and its complex deformation. The von Neumann entropy, however, is controlled only by the maximin surface in the causal domain of $\Sigma$, independently of other parameters, so long as the complex deformation does not vanish. Our proposal may thus explain the efficacy of tensor network toy models of holography while transcending their limitations.

Quantum State of a Gravitating Region

We propose that any compact $d$-manifold with elliptic data, $\mathcal{J}$, prepares a quantum state $|\mathcal{J}\rangle$ on its $(d-1)$-boundary $\sigma$. Elliptic data consists of metric and field values, or their conjugates, but not both. No asymptotic structure is required. Inner products and traces are evaluated by the gravitational path integral with closed boundary conditions obtained by gluing elliptic data manifolds. In particular, we give a prescription for the R\'enyi entropies $S_n$ of a subregion of $\sigma$. In a class of examples, we find that $S_n$ is nonnegative and nonincreasing with $n$, as required for consistency. We obtain the von Neumann entropy by analytic continuation and find agreement with the minimal surface prescription of Bousso and Penington.

Tests of restricted Quantum Focusing and a new CFT bound

The restricted quantum focusing conjecture (rQFC) plays a central role in an axiomatic formulation of semiclassical gravity. Since much hinges on its validity, it is imperative to subject the rQFC to rigorous tests in novel settings. Here we do so in two independent directions. First, we prove rQFC in a class of spacetime dimension $d=2$ toy models, JT gravity coupled to a QFT. We also construct explicit counter-examples to the original and stronger Quantum Focusing Conjecture in a regime where matter quantum effects are comparable to the total dilaton value. Second, for $d>2$, we derive from the rQFC a constraint stronger than the Quantum Null Energy Condition (QNEC). In a broad class of states, this bound forbids the QNEC from saturating faster than $O(\mathcal{A})$ as the transverse area $\mathcal{A}$ of a certain null deformation shrinks to zero. We speculate about a universal strengthened QNEC holding across all QFT states.

Hollow-grams: Generalized Entanglement Wedges from the Gravitational Path Integral

Recently, Bousso and Penington (BP) made a proposal for the entanglement wedge associated to a gravitating bulk region. In this paper, we derive this proposal in time-reflection symmetric settings using the gravitational path integral. To do this, we exploit the connection between random tensor networks (RTNs) and fixed-geometry states in gravity. We define the entropy of a bulk region in an RTN by removing tensors in that region and computing the entropy of the open legs thus generated in the "hollowed" RTN. We thus derive the BP proposal for RTNs and hence, also for fixed-geometry states in gravity. By then expressing a general holographic state as a superposition over fixed-geometry states and using a diagonal approximation, we provide a general gravitational path integral derivation of the BP proposal. We demonstrate that the saddles computing the R\'enyi entropy $S_n$ depend on how the bulk region is gauge-invariantly specified. Nevertheless, we show that the BP proposal is universally reproduced in the $n\to1$ limit.

Fundamental Complement of a Gravitating Region

Any gravitating region $a$ in any spacetime gives rise to a generalized entanglement wedge, the hologram $e(a)$. Holograms exhibit properties expected of fundamental operator algebras, such as strong subadditivity, nesting, and no-cloning. But the entanglement wedge EW of an AdS boundary region $B$ with commutant $\bar B$ satisfies an additional condition, complementarity: EW$(B)$ is the spacelike complement of EW$(\bar B)$ in the bulk. Here we identify an analogue of the boundary commutant $\bar B$ in general spacetimes: given a gravitating region $a$, its \emph{fundamental complement} $\tilde{a}$ is the smallest wedge that contains all infinite world lines contained in the spacelike complement $a'$ of $a$. We refine the definition of $e(a)$ by requiring that it be spacelike to $\tilde a$. We prove that $e(a)$ is the spacelike complement of $e(\tilde a)$ when the latter is computed in $a'$. We exhibit many examples of $\tilde{a}$ and of $e(a)$ in de Sitter, flat, and cosmological spacetimes. We find that a Big Bang cosmology (spatially closed or not) is trivially reconstructible: the whole universe is the entanglement wedge of any wedge inside it. But de Sitter space is not trivially reconstructible, despite being closed. We recover the AdS/CFT prescription by proving that EW$(B)=e($causal wedge of $B$).

Holographic Entropy Cone Beyond AdS/CFT

We extend all known area inequalities obeyed by Ryu-Takayanagi surfaces of AdS boundary regions -- the holographic entropy cone -- to static generalized entanglement wedges of bulk regions in arbitrary spacetimes. The generalized holographic entropy cone is subject to a mutual independence condition on the bulk regions: each bulk input region must be outside the entanglement wedge of the union of all others. The condition captures when gravitating regions involve fundamentally distinct degrees of freedom despite the nonlocality inherent in the holographic principle.

Geometric Quantum States Beyond AdS/CFT

We characterize the quantum states dual to entanglement wedges in arbitrary spacetimes, in settings where the matter entropy can be neglected compared to the geometric entropy. In AdS/CFT, such states obey special entropy inequalities known as the holographic entropy cone. In particular, the mutual information of CFT subregions is monogamous (MMI). We extend this result to arbitrary spacetimes, using a recent proposal for the generalized entanglement wedge e(a) of a gravitating region a. Given independent input regions a, b, and c, we prove MMI: Area[e(a)]+Area[e(b)]+Area[e(c)]-Area[e(ab)]-Area[e(bc)]-Area[e(ca)]+Area[e(abc)] $\leq$ 0. We expect that the full holographic entropy cone can be extended to arbitrary spacetimes using similar methods.

Sharpening the Distance Conjecture in Diverse Dimensions

The Distance Conjecture holds that any infinite-distance limit in the scalar field moduli space of a consistent theory of quantum gravity must be accompanied by a tower of light particles whose masses scale exponentially with proper field distance $\Vertϕ\Vert$ as $m \sim \exp(- λ\Vertϕ\Vert)$, where $λ$ is order-one in Planck units. While the evidence for this conjecture is formidable, there is at present no consensus on which values of $λ$ are allowed. In this paper, we propose a sharp lower bound for the lightest tower in a given infinite-distance limit in $d$ dimensions: $λ\geq 1/\sqrt{d-2}$. In support of this proposal, we show that (1) it is exactly preserved under dimensional reduction, (2) it is saturated in many examples of string/M-theory compactifications, including maximal supergravity in $d= \text{4 - 10}$ dimensions, and (3) it is saturated in many examples of minimal supergravity in $d= \text{4 - 10}$ dimensions, assuming appropriate versions of the Weak Gravity Conjecture. We argue that towers with $λ< 1/\sqrt{d-2}$ discussed previously in the literature are always accompanied by even lighter towers with $λ\geq 1/\sqrt{d-2}$, thereby satisfying our proposed bound. We discuss connections with and implications for the Emergent String Conjecture, the Scalar Weak Gravity Conjecture, the Repulsive Force Conjecture, large-field inflation, and scalar field potentials in quantum gravity. In particular, we argue that if our proposed bound applies beyond massless moduli spaces to scalar fields with potentials, then accelerated cosmological expansion cannot occur in asymptotic regimes of scalar field space in quantum gravity.

Higher-Group Symmetries and Weak Gravity Conjecture Mixing

In four-dimensional axion electrodynamics, a Chern-Simons coupling of the form $θF \wedge F$ leads to a higher-group global symmetry between background gauge fields. At the same time, such a Chern-Simons coupling leads to a mixing between the Weak Gravity Conjectures for the axion and the gauge field, so that the charged excitations of a Weak Gravity Conjecture-satisfying axion string will also satisfy the Weak Gravity Conjecture for the gauge field. In this paper, we argue that these higher-group symmetries and this phenomenon of Weak Gravity Conjecture mixing are related to one another. We show that this relationship extends to supergravities in 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 dimensions, so higher-dimensional supergravity is endowed with precisely the structure needed to ensure consistency with emergent higher-group symmetries and with the Weak Gravity Conjecture. We further argue that a similar mixing of Weak Gravity Conjectures can occur in two-term Chern-Simons theories or in theories with kinetic mixing, though the connection with higher-group symmetries here is more tenuous, and accordingly the constraints on effective field theory are not as sharp.
