Electronic and magnetic structures and bonding properties of Ce2CrN3 and U2CrN3 from first principles

The electronic and magnetic structures of A2CrN3 (A = Ce, U) ternary compounds calculated based on band magnetism within DFT exhibit different behaviors of the nf elements (n = 4, 5 resp.). Charge analysis allows to formally express the two compounds as A2Cr 5+ N3 5- thus classifying them as covalent nitrides, i.e. far from formal exchange of +- 9 electrons. From establishing the energy-volume equations of state, the two compounds are found with hardness magnitudes: B0(A=Ce) =192 GPa and B0(A=U) = 243 GPa, within range of oxides due to covalent metal-nitrogen bonding shown as based on overlap matrix analysis. The uranium compound is harder due to a smaller volume and less compressible U versus Ce metals. Ce2CrN3 exhibits large magnetization on Cr (1.94BM) and a very small moment develops on cerium (0.14 BM) pointing out to an intermediate valence state while in U2CrN3, M(Cr) = 0.49 BM and M(U) = 0.97BM. These results are stressed by broad band-like density of states (DOS) behavior for A=U and localized DOS for A=Ce. Both compounds are found ferromagnetic in the ground state

Ab initio studies of magnetic properties of cobalt and tetracobalt nitride Co$_{4}$N

Magnetic properties and bonding analyses of perovskite structure Co$_{4}$N nitride have been investigated within density functional theory using both pseudo potential and all electron methods. In the same time, the structural and magnetic stability of pure cobalt in hexagonal close packed (HCP), face centered cubic (FCC) and body centered cubic (BCC) structures are reviewed. At equilibrium, non-spin polarized (NSP) and spin polarized (SP) calculations of the energy versus volume show that the ground state is ferromagnetic in both materials. HCP-Co is found to be more stable than the cubic ones. Magnetic moments of Co atoms in Co$_4$N nitride respectively belonging to two different crystallographic sites are studied over a wide range of the cubic lattice constant, and a comparison with the FCC-cobalt one is given. The volume expansion in the nitride indicates that the corner Co$^{I}$ atoms show localized magnetism while face center Co$^{II}$ atoms exhibit an itinerant behavior. Like in FCC-Fe/Fe$_{4}$N, a "low volume-low moment" and "large volume-high moment" behavior is observed for FCC-Co/Co$_4$N. The density of states of the Co$_{4}$N ferromagnetic ground state is interpreted within the rigid band model. The different bonding characters of Co$^I$-N versus Co$^{II}$-N are shown with help of electron localization fucntion ELF plots and spin resolved chemical bonding criteria.

Coherent view of crystal chemistry and ab initio analyses of Pb(II) and Bi(III) Lone Pair in square planar coordination

The stereochemistry of 6s2 (E) lone pair of divalent Pb and trivalent Bi (PbII and BiIII designated by M*) in structurally related PbO, PbFX (X= Cl, Br, I), BiOX (X= F, Cl, Br, I) and Bi2NbO5F is rationalized. The lone pair LP presence determined by its sphere of influence E, equal to those of oxygen or fluorine anions, was settled by its center then giving M*-E directions and distances. Detailed description of structural features of both elements in the title compounds characterized by [PbEO]n and [BiEO]n layers allowed to show the evolution of M*-E distance versus the changes with the square pyramidal SP coordination polyhedra. All are different, in red PbO one finds {PbEO4E4} square antiprism, a {[Bi.E]O4X4Xapical} monocapped square antiprism in PbFX and BiOX and {BiEO4F4}square antiprism in Bi2NbO5F. To analyze the crystal chemistry results, the electronic structures of these compounds were calculated within density functional theory DFT. Real space analyses of electron localization illustrate a full volume development of the lone pair on PbII within {PbEO4E4} in PbOE, {PbEF4X4} in PbFXE and Bi(III) within {BiEO4X4} square antiprisms, contrary to Bi(III) within {[Bi.E]O4F4Fapical} monocapped square antiprism. Larger hardness (larger bulk modules B0) and band gap characterize BiOF versus PbO due to the presence of F which brings antibonding Bi-F interactions oppositely to mainly bonding Bi-O. In PbFX and BiOX series there is a systematic decrease of B0 with the increasing volume following the nature and size of X which is decreasingly electronegative and increasingly large. The electronic densities of states mirror these effects through the relative energy position and relative electronegativities of F/X and O/X leading to decrease the band gap.

Electronic structure and crystal phase stability of palladium hydrides

The results of electronic structure calculations for a variety of palladium hydrides are presented. The calculations are based on density functional theory and used different local and semilocal approximations. The thermodynamic stability of all structures as well as the electronic and chemical bonding properties are addressed. For the monohydride, taking into account the zero-point energy is important to identify the octahedral Pd-H arrangement with its larger voids and, hence, softer hydrogen vibrational modes as favorable over the tetrahedral arrangement as found in the zincblende and wurtzite structures. Stabilization of the rocksalt structure is due to strong bonding of the 4d and 1s orbitals, which form a characteristic split-off band separated from the main d-band group. Increased filling of the formerly pure d states of the metal causes strong reduction of the density of states at the Fermi energy, which undermines possible long-range ferromagnetic order otherwise favored by strong magnetovolume effects. For the dihydride, octahedral Pd-H arrangement as realized e.g. in the pyrite structure turns out to be unstable against tetrahedral arrangement as found in the fluorite structure. Yet, from both heat of formation and chemical bonding considerations the dihydride turns out to be less favorable than the monohydride. Finally, the vacancy ordered defect phase Pd3H4 follows the general trend of favouring the octahedral arrangement of the rocksalt structure for Pd:H ratios less or equal to one.

Carbon-induced ionocovalence in MgH2 storage material

The overall large ionic character of MgH2 is reduced by inserting light elements from the first period, B and C, using a trirutile host superstructure. Both elements are found destabilizing to the structure with largely positive cohesive energy with interstitial B and slightly negative cohesive energy with interstitial C. This trend is also observed for low amounts of insertion down to (B,C)0.167MgH2. From the Bader charge analysis the largely ionic character of hydrogen is decreased to an average H-0.37 in the neighborhood of C and H-0.75 for the other hydrogen atoms atoms (resp. H-0.64 and H-0.76 for B insertion). This peculiar behavior should enable enhancing the kinetics of H release for potential applications.

Drastic changes in electronic, magnetic, mechanical and bonding properties from Zr2CoH5 to Mg2CoH5

Despite similarities in formulae and local structures of Zr2CoH5 and Mg2CoH5, they are shown from ab initio calculations to present contrasted electronic, magnetic, mechanical and bonding properties due to the environment of cobalt with hydrogen characterized by negatively charged CoHx entities (x = 4, 5 resp.) and to the chemical nature of Zr versus Mg. Zr2CoH5 is found more cohesive, harder and less ductile than Mg2CoH5. High density of states at the Fermi level arises from out-of-plane non-bonding Co-dz2 in Zr2CoH5 which is found metallic ferromagnet in the ground state, in contrast with non magnetic and insulating Mg2CoH5.

Semiconducting (Half-Metallic) Ferromagnetism in Mn(Fe) Substituted Pt and Pd Nitrides

Using first principles calculations as based on density functional theory, we propose a class of so far unexplored diluted ferromagnetic semiconductors and half-metals. Here, we study the electronic properties of recently synthesized $ 4d $ and $ 5d $ transition metal dinitrides. In particular, we address Mn- and Fe-substitution in PtN$_2$ and PdN$_2$. Structural relaxation shows that the resulting ordered compounds, Pt$_{0.75}$(Mn,Fe)$_{0.25}$N$_2$ and Pd$_{0.75}$(Mn,Fe)$_{0.25}$N$_2$, maintain the cubic crystal symmetry of the parent compounds. On substitution, all compounds exhibit long-range ferromagnetic order. While both Pt$_{0.75}$Mn$_{0.25}$N$_2$ and Pd$_{0.75}$Mn$_{0.25}$N$_2$ are semiconducting, Fe-substitution causes half-metallic behavior for both parent materials.
