Math Takes Two: A test for emergent mathematical reasoning in communication

Although language models demonstrate remarkable proficiency on mathematical benchmarks, it remains unclear whether this reflects true mathematical reasoning or statistical pattern matching over learning formal syntax. Most existing evaluations rely on symbolic problems grounded in established mathematical conventions, limiting insight into the models' ability to construct abstract concepts from first principles. In this work, we propose Math Takes Two, a new benchmark designed to assess the emergence of mathematical reasoning through communication. Motivated by the hypothesis that mathematical cognition in humans co-evolved with the need for precise communication, our benchmark tests whether two agents, without prior mathematical knowledge, can develop a shared symbolic protocol to solve a visually grounded task where the use of a numerical system facilitates extrapolation. Unlike many current datasets, our benchmark eschews predefined mathematical language, instead requiring agents to discover latent structure and representations from scratch. Math Takes Two thus provides a novel lens through which to develop and evaluate models with emergent numerical reasoning capabilities.

Integration of high-performance compact interferometric sensors in a suspended interferometer

Homodyne Quadrature Interferometers (HoQIs) are compact, low noise and high dynamic range displacement sensors designed for use in gravitational wave observatories. Their lower noise compared to the displacement sensors used at present makes them valuable for improving the seismic isolation in current and future detectors. This paper outlines the progression of this sensor from initial production and benchtop tests to in-vacuum static performance and installation in a gravitational wave detector prototype facility. A detailed design description is outlined, including the full signal and optical chain required for implementation in detectors. The measured in-vacuum static performance indicates a noise floor of $3-4\times10^{-13}m/\sqrt{\rm{Hz}}$ at 10Hz. Three HoQIs were installed on the beamsplitter suspension at the AEI 10m prototype. They measured motion of the intermediate mass across the entire bandwidth measured and showed minimal non-linearities and a good robustness to motion in unmeasured degrees of freedom, both important for practical use in dynamic systems such as seismic isolation.

Zeta functions of infinite graph bundles

We compute the equivariant zeta function for bundles over infinite graphs and for infinite covers. In particular, we give a ``transfer formula'' for the zeta function of infinite graph covers. Also, when the infinite cover is given as a limit of finite covers, we give a formula for the limit of the zeta functions.

Properties of the Generalized Zig-Zag Product of Graphs

The operation of zig-zag products of graphs is the analogue of the semidirect product of groups. Using this observation, we present a categorical description of zig-zag products in order to generalize the construction for the category of simple graphs. Also, we examine the covering properties of zig-zag products and we utilize these results to estimate their spectral invariants in general. In addition, we provide specific spectral analysis for some such products.
