A complete curve of genus 10 in the moduli space of curves of genus 3 and related questions

We show the existence of a complete trigonal curve of geometric genus 10 in the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_3$ of smooth complex projective curves of genus $3$, and of a complete curve of geometric genus 102 through a general point of $\mathcal{M}_3$. We also show that the moduli space $\mathcal{A}_3$ of principally polarized complex abelian threefolds contains a complete curve whose normalization is a hyperelliptic curve of genus 4.

Ends of the strata of differentials

We enumerate the ends of each stratum of meromorphic 1-forms on Riemann surfaces with prescribed multiplicities of zeroes and poles. Our proof uses degeneration techniques based on the construction by Bainbridge-Chen-Gendron-Grushevsky-Moeller of the moduli space of multi-scale differentials, together with recent classification of connected components of generalized strata by Lee-Wong. In particular, from these results we quickly deduce the theorem for holomorphic 1-forms, originally proved by Boissy.

Integrable systems approach to the Schottky problem and related questions

We give a somewhat informal introduction to the integrable systems approach to the Schottky problem, explaining how the theta functions of Jacobians can be used to provide solutions of the KP equation, and culminating with the exposition of Krichever's proof of Welters' trisecant conjecture in the most degenerate (flex line) case.

Compact Subvarieties of the Moduli Space of Complex Abelian Varieties

We determine the maximal dimension of compact subvarieties of $\mathcal{A}_g$, the moduli space of complex principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g$, and the maximal dimension of a compact subvariety through a very general point of $\mathcal{A}_g$. This also allows us to draw some conclusions for compact subvarieties of the moduli space of complex curves of compact type.

Tree-Level Superstring Amplitudes: The Neveu-Schwarz Sector

We present a complete computation of superstring scattering amplitudes at tree level, for the case of Neveu-Schwarz insertions. Mathematically, this is to say that we determine explicitly the superstring measure on the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{0,n,0}$ of super Riemann surfaces of genus zero with $n \ge 3$ Neveu-Schwarz punctures. While, of course, an expression for the measure was previously known, we do this from first principles, using the canonically defined super Mumford isomorphism. We thus determine the scattering amplitudes, explicitly in the global coordinates on $\mathcal{M}_{0,n,0}$, without the need for picture changing operators or ghosts, and are also able to determine canonically the value of the coupling constant. Our computation should be viewed as a step towards performing similar analysis on $\mathcal{M}_{0,0,n}$, to derive explicit tree-level scattering amplitudes with Ramond insertions.

Moduli of abelian varieties near the locus of products of elliptic curves

We study various naturally defined subvarieties of the moduli space ${\mathcal A}_g$ of complex principally polarized abelian varieties (ppav) in a neighborhood of the locus of products of $g$ elliptic curves. In this neighborhood, we obtain a local description for the locus of hyperelliptic curves, reproving the recent result of Shepherd-Barron that the hyperelliptic locus is locally given by tridiagonal matrices. We further reprove and generalize to arbitrary genus the recent result of Agostini and Chua showing that the locus of Jacobians of genus 5 curves with a theta-null is an irreducible component of the locus of ppav with a theta-null such that the singular locus of the theta divisor at the corresponding two-torsion point has tangent cone of rank at most 3. We further show that the locus of ppav such that the gradient vanishes, for some odd theta characteristic, locally has codimension $g$ near the diagonal. Finally, we obtain new results on the locus where the rank of the Hessian of the theta function at a two-torsion point that lies on the theta divisor is equal to 2.

Powers of the theta divisor and relations in the tautological ring

We show that the vanishing of the $(g+1)$-st power of the theta divisor in the cohomology and Chow rings of the universal abelian variety implies, by pulling back along a collection of Abel-Jacobi maps, the vanishing results in the tautological ring of $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ of Looijenga, Ionel, Graber-Vakil, and Faber-Pandharipande. We also show that Pixton's double ramification cycle relations, which generalize the theta vanishing relations and were recently proved by the first and third authors, imply Theorem $\star$ of Graber and Vakil. Moreover, our proof provides an algorithm for expressing any tautological class on $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ of sufficiently high codimension as a tautological class supported on the boundary.

A tale of two moduli spaces: logarithmic and multi-scale differentials

Multi-scale differentials were constructed by M.~Bainbridge, D.~Chen, Q.~Gendron, S.~Grushevsky, and M.~M\"oller, from the viewpoint of flat and complex geometry, for the purpose of compactifying moduli spaces of curves together with a differential with prescribed orders of zeros and poles. Logarithmic differentials were constructed by S.~Marcus and J.~Wise, as a generalization of stable rubber maps from Gromov--Witten theory. Modulo the global residue condition that isolates the main components of the compactification, we show that these two kinds of differentials are equivalent, and establish an isomorphism of their (coarse) moduli stacks. Moreover, we describe the rubber and multi-scale spaces as an explicit blowup of the moduli space of stable pointed rational curves in the case of genus zero, and as a global blowup of the incidence variety compactification for arbitrary genera, which implies their projectivity. We also propose a refined double ramification cycle formula in the twisted Hodge bundle which interacts with the universal line bundle class.

Differentiating Siegel modular forms, and the moving slope of ${\mathcal A}_g$

We study the cone of moving divisors on the moduli space ${\mathcal A}_g$ of principally polarized abelian varieties. Partly motivated by the generalized Rankin-Cohen bracket, we construct a non-linear holomorphic differential operator that sends Siegel modular forms to Siegel modular forms, and we apply it to produce new modular forms. Our construction recovers the known divisors of minimal moving slope on ${\mathcal A}_g$ for $g\leq 4$, and gives an explicit upper bound for the moving slope of ${\mathcal A}_5$ and a conjectural upper bound for the moving slope of ${\mathcal A}_6$.

Non-isomorphic smooth compactifications of the moduli space of cubic surfaces

The moduli space of complex cubic surfaces has three different, but isomorphic, compact realizations: as a GIT quotient, as a Baily--Borel compactification of a ball quotient, and as a compactified $K$-moduli space. From all three perspectives, there is a unique boundary point corresponding to non-stable surfaces. From the GIT point of view, to deal with this point, it is natural to consider the Kirwan blowup, while from the ball quotient point of view it is natural to consider the toroidal compactification. Both these spaces have the same cohomology and and it is therefore natural to ask whether they are isomorphic. Here we show that this is in fact not the case. Indeed, we show the more refined statement that both spaces are equivalent in the Grothendieck ring, but not $K$-equivalent. Along the way, we establish a number of results and techniques for dealing with singularities and canonical classes of Kirwan blowups and toroidal compactifications of ball quotients.

Singularities of theta divisors and the geometry of A_5

We study the codimension two locus H in A_g consisting of principally polarized abelian varieties whose theta divisor has a singularity that is not an ordinary double point. We compute the class of H in A_g for every g. For g=4, this turns out to be the locus of Jacobians with a vanishing theta-null. For g=5, via the Prym map we show that H in A_5 has two components, both unirational, which we completely describe. This gives a geometric classification of 5-dimensional ppav whose theta-divisor has a quadratic singularity of non-maximal rank. We then determine the slope of the effective cone of A_5 and show that the component N_0' of the Andreotti-Mayer divisor has minimal slope 54/7. Furthermore, the Iitaka dimension of the linear system corresponding to N_0' is submaximal.

On the cone of effective surfaces on $\overline{\mathcal A}_3$

We determine five extremal effective rays of the four-dimensional cone of effective surfaces on the toroidal compactification $\overline{\mathcal A}_3$ of the moduli space ${\mathcal A}_3$ of complex principally polarized abelian threefolds, and we conjecture that the cone of effective surfaces is generated by these surfaces. As the surfaces we define can be defined in any genus $g\ge 3$, we further conjecture that they generate the cone of effective surfaces on the perfect cone toroidal compactification of ${\mathcal A}_g$ for any $g\ge 3$.

Equations of linear subvarieties of strata of differentials

For a linear subvariety $M$ of a stratum of meromorphic differentials, we investigate its closure in the multi-scale compactification constructed by Bainbridge-Chen-Gendron-Grushevsky-Möller. We prove various restrictions on the type of defining linear equations in period coordinates for $M$ near its boundary, and prove that the closure is locally a toric variety. As applications, we give a fundamentally new proof of a generalization of the cylinder deformation theorem of Wright to the case of meromorphic strata, and construct a smooth compactification of the Hurwitz space of covers of the Riemann sphere.

An explicit solution to the weak Schottky problem

We give an explicit weak solution to the Schottky problem, in the spirit of Riemann and Schottky. For any genus $g$, we write down a collection of polynomials in genus $g$ theta constants, such that their common zero locus contains the locus of Jacobians of genus $g$ curves as an irreducible component. These polynomials arise by applying a specific Schottky-Jung proportionality to an explicit collection of quartic identities for theta constants in genus $g-1$, which are suitable linear combinations of Riemann's quartic relations.

Complete moduli of cubic threefolds and their intermediate Jacobians

The intermediate Jacobian map, which associates to a smooth cubic threefold its intermediate Jacobian, does not extend to the GIT compactification of the space of cubic threefolds, not even as a map to the Satake compactification of the moduli space of principally polarized abelian fivefolds. A much better "wonderful" compactification of the space of cubic threefolds was constructed by the first and fourth authors --- it has a modular interpretation, and divisorial normal crossing boundary. We prove that the intermediate Jacobian map extends to a morphism from the wonderful compactification to the second Voronoi toroidal compactification of the moduli of principally polarized abelian fivefolds --- the first and fourth author previously showed that it extends to the Satake compactification. Since the second Voronoi compactification has a modular interpretation, our extended intermediate Jacobian map encodes all of the geometric information about the degenerations of intermediate Jacobians, and allows for the study of the geometry of cubic threefolds via degeneration techniques. As one application we give a complete classification of all degenerations of intermediate Jacobians of cubic threefolds of torus rank 1 and 2.

The moduli space of multi-scale differentials

We construct a compactification of the moduli spaces of abelian differentials on Riemann surfaces with prescribed zeroes and poles. This compactification, called the moduli space of multi-scale differentials, is a complex orbifold with normal crossing boundary. Locally, our compactification can be described as the normalization of an explicit blowup of the incidence variety compactification, which was defined in [BCGGM18] as the closure of the stratum of abelian differentials in the closure of the Hodge bundle. We also define families of projectivized multi-scale differentials, which gives a proper Deligne-Mumford stack, and our compactification is the orbifold corresponding to it. Moreover, we perform a real oriented blowup of the unprojectivized moduli space of multi-scale differentials such that the $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb R)$-action in the interior of the moduli space extends continuously to the boundary.
