Multiplier ideals in algebraic geometry

In this expository introductory text we discuss the multiplier ideals in algebraic geometry. We state Kawamata-Viehweg's and Nadel's vanishing theorems, give a proof (following Ein and Lazarsfeld) of Kollár's bound on the maximal multiplicity of the theta divisor, and explain the asymptotic constructions and the ideas of Siu's proof of the deformation invariance of plurigenera. We also indicate the analytic interpretation of the theory.

Cubic equations for the hyperelliptic locus

We discuss the conjecture of Buchstaber and Krichever that their multi-dimensional vector addition formula for Baker-Akhiezer functions characterizes Jacobians among principally polarized abelian varieties, and prove that it is indeed a weak characterization, i.e. that it is true up to additional components, or true precisely under a general position assumption. We also show that this addition formula is equivalent to Gunning's multisecant formula for the Kummer variety. We then use Buchstaber-Krichever's computation of the coefficients in the addition formula to obtain cubic relations among theta functions, which (weakly) characterize the locus of hyperelliptic Jacobians among irreducible abelian varieties. In genus 3 our equations are equivalent to the vanishing of one theta-null, and thus are known classically by work of Mumford and Poor, but already for genus 4 they appear to be new.

Theta functions of arbitrary order and their derivatives

In this paper we establish the relationships between theta functions of arbitrary order and their derivatives. We generalize our previous work math.AG/0310085 and prove that for any n>1 the map sending an abelian variety to the set of Gauss images of its points of order 2n is an embedding into an appropriate Grassmannian (note that for n=1, i.e. points of order 2, we only get generic injectivity). We further discuss the generalizations of Jacobi's derivative formula for any dimension and any order. The series of embedding of the level covers of moduli spaces of principally polarized abelian varieties into Grassmannians that we define can be considered as the odd counterpart of the classical embeddings into projective spaces, by taking the values of even theta constants, considered by Igusa and Mumford.

The degree of the Jacobian locus and the Schottky problem

We show that the degree of the images of the moduli space of (principally polarized) abelian varieties A_g and of the moduli space of curves M_g in the projective space under the theta constant embedding are equal to the top self-intersection numbers of one half the first Hodge class on them. This allows us to obtain an explicit formula for the degree of A_g, and an explicit upper bound for the degree of M_g. Knowing the degree of A_g allows us to effectively determine the subvariety itself, i.e. to effectively obtain all polynomial equations satisfied by theta constants. Furthermore, combining the bound on the degree of M_g with effective Nullstellensatz allows us to rewrite the Kadomtsev-Petvsiashvili (KP) partial differential equation as a system of algebraic equations for theta constants, and thus obtain an effective algebraic solution to the Schottky problem.

Gradients of odd theta functions

We show that a generic principally polarized abelian variety (ppav) is uniquely determined by its theta hyperplanes. These are the non-projectivized version of those studied by Caporaso and Sernesi (see math.AG/0204164), which in a sense are a generalization to ppavs of bitangents of plane quartics, and of hyperplanes tangent to a canonical curves of genus $g$ in $g-1$ points. More precisely, we show that, generically, the set of gradients of all odd theta functions at the point zero uniquely determines a ppav with level (4,8) structure. We also show that our map is an immersion of the moduli space of ppavs.

Explicit upper bound for the Weil-Petersson volumes

An explicit upper bound for the Weil-Petersson volumes of the moduli spaces of punctured Riemann surfaces is obtained, using Penner's combinatorial integration scheme with embedded trivalent graphs. It is shown that for a fixed number of punctures n and for genus g going to infinity, the Weil-Petersson volume of M_{g,n} has an upper bound c^g g^{2g}. Here c is an independent of n constant, which is given explicitly.
