A question of Kuhnau

It is well known that the square is not a Strebel's point (i.e., its extremal Beltrami coefficient is not Teichmuller). Many years ago, Reiner Kuhnau posed the question: does there exist in the case of a "long" rectangle the corresponding holomorphic quadratic differential? We prove that the answer is negative for any bounded convex quadrilateral and establish a stronger result for rectangles.

Quasiconformal features and Fredholm eigenvalues of convex polygons

An important open problem in geometric complex analysis is to find algorithms for explicit determination of basic functionals intrinsically connected with conformal and quasiconformal maps, such as their Teichmuller and Grunsky norms, Fredholm eigenvalues and the quasireflection coefficient. This has not been solved even for convex polygons. This case has intrinsic interest in view of the connection of such polygons with the geometry of the universal Teichmuller space. We provide a new approach, based on affine transformations of univalent functions.

Holomorphic contractibility of Teichmüller spaces

The problem of holomorphic contractibilty of Teichmüller spaces T(0, n) of the punctures spheres (n > 4) arose in the 1970s in connection with solving the algebraic equations in Banach algebras. We provide a positive solution of this problem.

Complex rigidity of Teichmüller spaces

We outline old and new results concerning the well-known problems in the Teichmüller space theory, i.e., whether these spaces are starlike in the Bers holomorphic embedding and whether any Teichmüller space of dimension greater than 1 is biholomorhically equivalent to bounded convex domain in a complex Banach space.

Complex geodesics and variational calculus for univalent functions

It turns out that complex geodesics in Teichmüller spaces with respect to their invariant metrics are intrinsically connected with variational calculus for univalent functions. We describe this connection and show how geometric features associated to these metrics and geodesics provide deep distortion results for various classes of functions with quasiconformal extensions and create new phenomena which do not appear in the classical geometric function theory.

Hyperbolic geodesics, Krzyz's conjecture and beyond

In 1968, Krzyz conjectured that for non-vanishing holomorphic functions $f(z) = c_0 + c_1 z + \dots$ in the unit disk with $|f(z)| \leq 1$, we have the sharp bound $|c_n| \leq 2/e$ for all $n \geq 1$, with equality only for the function $f(z) = exp [(z^n - 1)/(z^n + 1)]$ and its rotations. This conjecture was considered by many researchers, but only partial results have been established. The desired estimate has been proved only for $n \leq 5$. We provide here two different proofs of this conjecture and its generalizations based on completely different ideas.

A short geometric proof of the Zalcman and Bieberbach conjectures

We show that complex geometric features of Teichmuller spaces create explicitly the extremals of generic homogeneous holomorphic functionals on univalent functions. In particular this gives proofs of the well-known Zalcman and Bieberbach conjectures and many new distortion theorems.

Milin's coefficients, complex geometry of Teichmüller spaces and variational calculus for univalent functions

We investigate the invariant metrics and complex geodesics in the universal Teichmüller space and Teichmüller space of the punctured disk using Milin's coefficient inequalities. This technique allows us to establish that all non-expanding invariant metrics in either of these spaces coincide with its intrinsic Teichmüller metric. Other applications concern the variational theory for univalent functions with quasiconformal extension. It turns out that geometric features caused by the equality of metrics and connection with complex geodesics provide deep distortion results for various classes of such functions and create new phenomena which do not appear in the classical geometric function theory.

Strengthened Grunsky and Milin inequalities

The method of Grunsky inequalities has many applications and has been extended in many directions, even to bordered Riemann surfaces. However, unlike the case of functions univalent in the disk, a quasiconformal variant of this theory has not been developed so far. In this paper, we essentially improve the basic facts concerning the classical Grunsky inequalities for univalent functions on the disk and extend these results to arbitrary quasiconformal disks. Several applications are given.

The Zalcman conjecture and related problems

At the end of 1960's, Lawrence Zalcman posed a conjecture that the coefficients of univalent functions $f(z) = z + \sum\limits_2^\infty a_n z^n$ on the unit disk satisfy the sharp inequality $|a_n^2 - a_{2n-1}| \le (n-1)^2$, with equality only for the Koebe function. This remarkable conjecture implies the Bieberbach conjecture, investigated by many mathematicians, and still remains a very difficult open problem for all n > 3; it was proved only in certain special cases. We provide a proof of Zalcman's conjecture based on results concerning the plurisubharmonic functionals and metrics on the universal Teichmüller space. As a corollary, this implies a new proof of the Bieberbach conjecture. Our method gives also other new sharp estimates for large coefficients.

Hyperbolic metrics, homogeneous holomorphic functionals and Zalcman's conjecture

We show, using the Kobayashi and Caratheodory metrics on special holomorphic disks in the universal Teichmuller space, that a wide class of holomorphic functionals on the space of univalent functions in the disk is maximized by the Koebe function or by its root transforms; their extremality is forced by hyperbolic features. As consequences, this implies the proofs of the famous Zalcman and Bieberbach conjectures.

Hyperbolic distances, nonvanishing holomorphic functions and Krzyz's conjecture

The goal of this paper is to prove the conjecture of Krzyz posed in 1968 that for nonvanishing holomorphic functions $f(z) = c_0 + c_1 z + ...$ in the unit disk with $|f(z)| \le 1$, we have the sharp bound $|c_n| \le 2/e$ for all $n \ge 1$, with equality only for the function $f(z) = \exp [(z^n - 1)/(z^n + 1)]$ and its rotations. The problem was considered by many researchers, but only partial results have been established. The desired estimate has been proved only for $n \le 5$. Our approach is completely different and relies on complex geometry and pluripotential features of convex domains in complex Banach spaces.

The Green function of Teichmüller spaces with applications

We describe briefly a new approach to some problems related to Teichmüller spaces, invariant metrics, and extremal quasiconformal maps. This approach is based on the properties of plurisubharmonic functions, especially of the plurisubharmonic Green function. The main theorem gives an explicit representation of the Green function for Teichmüller spaces by the Kobayashi-Teichmüller metric of these spaces. This leads to various applications. In particular, this gives a new characterization of extremal quasiconformal maps.
