IMProofBench: Benchmarking AI on Research-Level Mathematical Proof Generation

As the mathematical capabilities of large language models (LLMs) improve, it becomes increasingly important to evaluate their performance on research-level tasks at the frontier of mathematical knowledge. However, existing benchmarks are limited, as they focus solely on final-answer questions or high-school competition problems. To address this gap, we introduce IMProofBench, a private benchmark consisting of 77 peer-reviewed problems developed by expert mathematicians. Each problem requires a detailed proof and is paired with subproblems that have final answers, supporting both an evaluation by human experts and a large-scale quantitative analysis through automated grading. Furthermore, unlike prior benchmarks, the evaluation setup simulates a realistic research environment: models operate in an agentic framework with tools like web search for literature review and mathematical software such as SageMath. Our results show that current LLMs can already solve a significant percentage of research-level questions. IMProofBench will continue to evolve as a dynamic benchmark in collaboration with the mathematical community, ensuring its relevance for evaluating the next generation of LLMs.

Diffeomorphism groups of solid tori and the rational pseudoisotopy stable range

We compute the rational homotopy groups of the classifying space $\mathrm{BDiff}_{\partial}(S^1 \times D^{d-1})$ of the topological group of diffeomorphisms of $S^1 \times D^{d-1}$ fixing the boundary for $d \geq 6$, in a range of degrees up until around $d$. This extends results of Budney-Gabai, Bustamante-Randal-Williams, and Watanabe. As consequences of this computation, we determine the rational pseudoisotopy stable range for compact spin manifolds with fundamental group $\mathbf{Z}$ of dimension $d\geq 6$ to be $[0,d-5]$, and compute in this range the rational homotopy groups of $\mathrm{BDiff}_{\partial}(S^1 \times N)$ for compact simply-connected spin $(d-1)$-manifolds $N$. Finally, by combining our results with work of Krannich-Randal-Williams and Kupers-Randal-Williams on $\mathrm{BDiff}_{\partial}(D^d)$, we compute the rational homotopy groups of the space $\mathrm{Emb}_{\partial}(D^{d-2}, D^d)$ of long knots in codimension 2 for $d \geq 6$, again in the same range.

A Weiss-Williams theorem for spaces of embeddings and the homotopy type of spaces of long knots

We establish a pseudoisotopy result for embedding spaces in the line of that of Weiss and Williams for diffeomorphism groups. In other words, for $P\subset M$ a codimension at least three embedding, we describe the difference in a range of homotopical degrees between the spaces of block and ordinary embeddings of $P$ into $M$ as a certain infinite loop space involving the relative algebraic $K$-theory of the pair $(M,M-P)$. This range of degrees is the so-called concordance embedding stable range, which, by recent developments of Goodwillie-Krannich-Kupers, is far beyond that of the aforementioned theorem of Weiss-Williams. We use this result to obtain split fibre sequences in the concordance embedding stable range, with explicit, analysable base and fibre, which determine the homotopy type of spaces of long knots of codimension at least 3. This leads to explicit computations of homotopy groups, including torsion information, in that range. In doing so, we carry out an extensive analysis of certain geometric involutions in algebraic $K$-theory that may be of independent interest.

Mapping class groups of $h$-cobordant manifolds

We prove that the mapping class group is not an $h$-cobordism invariant of high-dimensional manifolds by exhibiting $h$-cobordant manifolds whose mapping class groups have different cardinalities. In order to do so, we introduce a moduli space of "$h$-block" bundles and understand its difference with the moduli space of ordinary block bundles.
