Holography and Cheeger constant of asymptotically CMC submanifolds

Let $(M^{n+1},g_+)$ be an asymptotically hyperbolic manifold. We compute the Cheeger constant of conformally compact asymptotically constant mean curvature submanifolds $ ι: Y^{k+1} \to (M^{n+1},g_+)$ with arbitrary codimension. As an application, we provide two classes of examples of $(n+1)$-dimensional asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds with Cheeger constant equal to $n$, whose conformal infinity is of the following types: 1) positive Yamabe invariant, and 2) negative Yamabe invariant. Moreover, in the same spirit as Blitz--Gover--Waldron \cite{BlitzSamuel2021CFFa}, we show that an asymptotically hyperbolic manifold with umbilic boundary is conformally weakly Poincaré--Einstein if and only if the third conformal fundamental form of the boundary vanishes. Next, in the space of asymptotically minimal hypersurfaces $Y$ within a Poincaré--Einstein manifold, we identify an extrinsic conformal invariant of $\partial Y$ which obstructs the vanishing of the mean curvature of $Y$ to second order. This conformal invariant is a linear combination of two Riemannian hypersurface invariants of $\partial Y,$ one which depends on its extrinsic geometry within $\overline{Y}$ and the other on its extrinsic geometry within $\partial M;$ neither of which are conformal invariants individually. Finally, we show that for asymptotically minimal hypersurfaces with mean curvature vanishing to second order inside of a Poincaré--Einstein space, being weakly Poincaré--Einstein is equivalent to the boundary of $Y$ having vanishing second and third conformal fundamental forms when viewed as a hypersurface within the conformal infinity.

Existence and Regularity of Extremal Metrics for the Conformal Dirichlet-to-Robin Map

We study the variational properties of the spectrum of the Dirichlet-to-Robin map $\mathcal{D}_g$ on connected compact manifolds with boundary of dimension at least three. For the first eigenvalue, we show that Type II Yamabe metrics extremize the first normalized eigenvalue functional, and we characterize all extremals. If $[g]$ is a conformal class for which $\mathcal{D}_g$ has at least two negative eigenvalues, then we show the existence of a generalized metric that maximizes the second normalized eigenvalue of $\mathcal{D}_g$ in the conformal class. Moreover, we show that each such metric either defines a solution to an Escobar--Yamabe type equation on manifolds with boundary that changes sign along the boundary, or a weakly free-boundary harmonic map into the unit Euclidean ball.

Sharp Spectral Bounds for the $p$-Laplacian and Polyharmonic Operators on Asymptotically Hyperbolic Manifolds

We derive sharp bounds for three types of eigenvalue problems. First, we derive an upper bound for the first $p$-Dirichlet eigenvalue on conformally compact (CC) spaces. As a consequence, we show that for a class of CC submanifolds of asymptotically hyperbolic spaces, the asymptotic sectional curvatures, the meeting angle at infinity, and the vanishing of the norm of the mean curvature are all determined by its first $p$-Dirichlet eigenvalue. Additionally, we derive sharp upper bounds for the first eigenvalue of polyharmonic operators under both clamped and buckling boundary conditions. Finally, we prove sharp lower bounds for all three types of eigenvalue problems on weakly Poincaré-Einstein spaces with $\text{Ric}_{g_+}\ge -ng_+$ and whose conformal infinity has nonnegative Yamabe constant, and on their submanifolds.

First Eigenvalue Estimates for Asymptotically Hyperbolic Manifolds and their Submanifolds

We derive a sharp upper bound for the first eigenvalue $λ_{1,p}$ of the $p$-Laplacian on asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds for $1<p<\infty$. We then prove that a particular class of conformally compact submanifolds within asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds are themselves asymptotically hyperbolic. As a corollary, we show that for any minimal conformally compact submanifold $Y^{k+1}$ within $\mathbb{H}^{n+1}(-1)$, $λ_{1,p}(Y)=\left(\frac{k}{p}\right)^{p}$. We then obtain lower bounds on $λ_{1,2}(Y)$ in the case where minimality is replaced with a bounded mean curvature assumption and where the ambient space is a general Poincaré-Einstein space whose conformal infinity is of non-negative Yamabe type. In the process, we introduce an invariant $\hat β^Y$ for each such submanifold, enabling us to generalize a result due to Cheung-Leung.

Extremal metrics for the Paneitz Operator on closed four-Manifolds

Let $(M^4,g)$ be a closed Riemannian manifold of dimension four. We investigate the properties of metrics which are critical points of the eigenvalues of the Paneitz operator when considered as functionals on the space of Riemannian metrics with fixed volume. We prove that critical metrics of the aforementioned functional restricted to conformal classes are associated with a higher-order analog of harmonic maps (known as extrinsic conformal-harmonic maps) into round spheres. This extends to four-manifolds well-known results on closed surfaces relating metrics maximizing laplacian eigenvalues in conformal classes with the existence of harmonic maps into spheres. The case of general critical points (not restricted to conformal classes) is also studied, and partial characterization of these is provided.

Variational Properties Of The Second Eigenvalue Of The Conformal Laplacian

Let $(M^n,g)$ be a closed Riemannian manifold of dimension $n\ge 3$. Assume $[g]$ is a conformal class for which the Conformal Laplacian $L_g$ has at least two negative eigenvalues. We show the existence of a (generalized) metric that maximizes the second eigenvalue of $L_g$ over all conformal metrics (the first eigenvalue is maximized by the Yamabe metric). We also show that a maximal metric defines either a nodal solution of the Yamabe equation, or a harmonic map to a sphere. Moreover, we construct examples of each possibility.

Extremal Eigenvalues Of The Conformal Laplacian Under Sire-Xu Normalization

Let $(M^n,g)$ be a closed Riemannian manifold of dimension $n\ge 3$. We study the variational properties of the $k$-th eigenvalue functional $\tilde g\in[g] \mapsto λ_k(L_{\tilde g})$ under a non-volume normalization proposed by Sire-Xu. We discuss necessary conditions for the existence of extremal eigenvalues under such normalization. Also, we discuss the general existence problem when $k=1$.
