Constructing integrable systems of semitoric type

Let M be a connected, symplectic 4-manifold. A semitoric integrable system on M essentially consists of a pair of independent, real-valued, smooth functions J and H on the manifold M, for which J generates a Hamiltonian circle action under which H is invariant. In this paper we give a general method to construct, starting from a collection of five ingredients, a symplectic 4-manifold equipped a semitoric integrable system. Then we show that every semitoric integrable system on a symplectic 4-manifold is obtained in this fashion. In conjunction with the uniqueness theorem proved recently by the authors (Invent. Math. 2009), this gives a classification of semitoric integrable systems on 4-manifolds, in terms of five invariants. Some of the invariants are geometric, others are analytic and others are combinatorial/group-theoretic.

Symplectic inverse spectral theory for pseudodifferential operators

We prove, under some generic assumptions, that the semiclassical spectrum modulo O(h^2) of a one dimensional pseudodifferential operator completely determines the symplectic geometry of the underlying classical system. In particular, the spectrum determines the hamiltonian dynamics of the principal symbol.

Semitoric integrable systems on symplectic 4-manifolds

Let M be a symplectic 4-manifold. A semitoric integrable system on M is a pair of real-valued smooth functions J, H on M for which J generates a Hamiltonian S^1-action and the Poisson brackets {J,H} vanish. We shall introduce new global symplectic invariants for these systems; some of these invariants encode topological or geometric aspects, while others encode analytical information about the singularities and how they stand with respect to the system. Our goal is to prove that a semitoric system is completely determined by the invariants we introduce.

Spectral asymptotics via the semiclassical Birkhoff normal form

This article gives a simple treatment of the quantum Birkhoff normal form for semiclassical pseudo-differential operators with smooth coefficients. The normal form is applied to describe the discrete spectrum in a generalised non-degenerate potential well, yielding uniform estimates in the energy $E$. This permits a detailed study of the spectrum in various asymptotic regions of the parameters $(E,\h)$, and gives improvements and new proofs for many of the results in the field. In the completely resonant case we show that the pseudo-differential operator can be reduced to a Toeplitz operator on a reduced symplectic orbifold. Using this quantum reduction, new spectral asymptotics concerning the fine structure of eigenvalue clusters are proved. In the case of polynomial differential operators, a combinatorial trace formula is obtained.

Moment polytopes for symplectic manifolds with monodromy

A natural way of generalising Hamiltonian toric manifolds is to permit the presence of generic isolated singularities for the moment map. For a class of such ``almost-toric 4-manifolds'' which admits a Hamiltonian $S^1$-action we show that one can associate a group of convex polygons that generalise the celebrated moment polytopes of Atiyah, Guillemin-Sternberg. As an application, we derive a Duistermaat-Heckman formula demonstrating a strong effect of the possible monodromy of the underlying integrable system.

Diophantine tori and spectral asymptotics for non-selfadjoint operators

We study spectral asymptotics for small non-selfadjoint perturbations of selfadjoint $h$-pseudodifferential operators in dimension 2, assuming that the classical flow of the unperturbed part possesses several invariant Lagrangian tori enjoying a Diophantine property. We get complete asymptotic expansions for all eigenvalues in certain rectangles in the complex plane in two different cases: in the first case, we assume that the strength $ε$ of the perturbation is ${\cal O}(h^δ)$ for some $δ>0$ and is bounded from below by a fixed positive power of $h$. In the second case, $ε$ is assumed to be sufficiently small but independent of $h$, and we describe the eigenvalues completely in a fixed $h$-independent domain in the complex spectral plane.

Symplectic Techniques for Semiclassical Completely Integrable Systems

This article is a survey of classical and quantum completely integrable systems from the viewpoint of local ``phase space'' analysis. It advocates the use of normal forms and shows how to get global information from glueing local pieces. Many crucial phenomena such as monodromy or eigenvalue concentration are shown to arise from the presence of non-degenerate critical points.

On semi-global invariants for focus-focus singularities

This article gives a classification, up to symplectic equivalence, of singular Lagrangian foliations given by a completely integrable system of a 4-dimensional symplectic manifold, in a full neighbourhood of a singular leaf of focus-focus (=nodal) type.

Singular Bohr-Sommerfeld Rules for 2D Integrable Systems

In this paper, we describe Bohr-Sommerfeld rules for semi-classical completely integrable systems with 2 degrees of freedom with non degenerate singularities (Morse-Bott singularities) under the assumption that the energy level of the first Hamiltonian is non singular. The more singular case of {\it focus-focus} singularities is studied in [Vu Ngoc San, CPAM 2000] and [Vu Ngoc San, PhD 1998] The case of 1 degree of freedom has been studied in [Colin de Verdiere-Parisse, CMP 1999] Our theory is applied to some famous examples: the geodesics of the ellipsoid, the $1:2$-resonance, and Schroedinger operators on the sphere $S^2$. A numerical test shows that the semiclassical Bohr-Sommerfeld rules match very accurately the ``purely quantum'' computations.
