Preconditioning of a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for the coupled Stokes--Darcy system

We propose parameter-robust preconditioners for the statically condensed linear system arising from a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin discretization of the coupled Stokes--Darcy system. The design strategy relies on first applying the operator-preconditioning framework [Numer. Linear Algebra Appl., 18(1):1--40, 2011] to construct a preconditioner for the non-condensed discretization. This is done by proving uniform well-posedness of the scheme. Next, we prove robustness of the resulting condensed preconditioner applied to the reduced linear system using the framework we proposed in [SIAM J. Sci. Comput., 47(6):A3212--A3238, 2025]. Numerical examples demonstrate robustness of the proposed preconditioners.

Robust preconditioning for an HDG discretization of the time-dependent Stokes equations

We present parameter-robust preconditioners for linear systems that arise after applying static condensation to a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) discretization of the time-dependent Stokes problem. Building upon the theoretical framework introduced in our previous work [SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing, 47(6):A3212-A3238, 2025], we extend the analysis to derive new preconditioners that remain robust with respect to all physical and discretization parameters. The construction relies on first establishing uniform well-posedness of the HDG formulation (before static condensation) through appropriately defined norms. Based on this result, we identify sufficient conditions that a norm on the face space must satisfy to guarantee parameter-robustness of the resulting preconditioner for the statically condensed HDG system. Numerical experiments in two and three dimensions verify our theoretical results.

Preconditioning a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for Navier-Stokes at high Reynolds number

We introduce a preconditioner for a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin discretization of the linearized Navier-Stokes equations at high Reynolds number. The preconditioner is based on an augmented Lagrangian approach of the full discretization. Unlike standard grad-div type augmentation, however, we consider augmentation based on divergence-conformity. With this augmentation we introduce two different, well-conditioned, and easy to solve matrices to approximate the trace pressure Schur complement. To introduce a completely algebraic solver, we propose to use multifrontal sparse LU solvers using butterfly compression to solve the trace velocity block. Numerical examples demonstrate that the trace pressure Schur complement is highly robust in mesh spacing and Reynolds number and that the multifrontal inexact LU performs well for a wide range of Reynolds numbers.

Preconditioning of a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for Biot's consolidation model

We present a parameter-robust preconditioner for a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) discretization of a four-field formulation of Biot's consolidation model. We first determine a parameter-robust preconditioner for the full discretization. HDG methods, however, allow for static condensation. We therefore apply the framework presented in our previous work [arXiv:2503.05918, 2025] to show that a reduced form of the preconditioner is also parameter-robust for the reduced HDG discretization. We verify the parameter-robustness of the preconditioner through numerical examples in both two and three dimensions.

Parameter-robust preconditioning for hybridizable symmetric discretizations

Hybridizable discretizations allow for the elimination of local degrees-of-freedom leading to reduced linear systems. In this paper, we determine and analyse an approach to construct parameter-robust preconditioners for these reduced systems. Using the framework of Mardal and Winther (Numer. Linear Algebra Appl., 18(1):1--40, 2011) we first determine a parameter-robust preconditioner for the full system. We then eliminate the local degrees-of-freedom of this preconditioner to obtain a preconditioner for the reduced system. However, not all reduced preconditioners obtained in this way are automatically robust. We therefore present conditions that must be satisfied for the reduced preconditioner to be robust. To demonstrate our approach, we determine preconditioners for the reduced systems obtained from hybridizable discretizations of the Darcy and Stokes equations. Our analysis is verified by numerical examples in two and three dimensions.

A coupled HDG/DG method for porous media with conducting/sealing faults

We introduce and analyze a coupled hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin/discontinuous Galerkin (HDG/DG) method for porous media in which we allow fully and partly immersed faults, and faults that separate the domain into two disjoint subdomains. We prove well-posedness and present an a priori error analysis of the discretization. Numerical examples verify our analysis.

A posteriori error analysis of a space-time hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for the advection-diffusion problem

We present and analyze an a posteriori error estimator for a space-time hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin discretization of the time-dependent advection-diffusion problem. The residual-based error estimator is proven to be reliable and locally efficient. In the reliability analysis we combine a Peclet-robust coercivity type result and a saturation assumption, while local efficiency analysis is based on using bubble functions. The analysis considers both local space and time adaptivity and is verified by numerical simulations on problems which include boundary and interior layers.

Design and analysis of an exactly divergence-free hybridized discontinuous Galerkin method for incompressible flows on meshes with quadrilateral cells

We generalise a hybridized discontinuous Galerkin method for incompressible flow problems to non-affine cells, showing that with a suitable element mapping the generalised method preserves a key invariance property that eludes most methods, namely that any irrotational component of the prescribed force is exactly balanced by the pressure gradient and does not affect the velocity field. This invariance property can be preserved in the discrete problem if the incompressibility constraint is satisfied in a sufficiently strong sense. We derive sufficient conditions to guarantee discretely divergence-free functions are exactly divergence-free and give examples of divergence-free finite elements on meshes with triangular, quadrilateral, tetrahedral, or hexahedral cells generated by a (possibly non-affine) map from their respective reference cells. In the case of quadrilateral cells, we prove an optimal error estimate for the velocity field that does not depend on the pressure approximation. Our analysis is supported by numerical results.

A hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for the coupled Navier-Stokes/Biot problem

In this paper we present a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for the time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations coupled to the quasi-static poroelasticity equations via interface conditions. We determine a bound on the data that guarantees stability and well-posedness of the fully discrete problem and prove a priori error estimates. A numerical example confirms our analysis.

A hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for the dual-porosity-Stokes problem

We introduce and analyze a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method for the dual-porosity-Stokes problem. This coupled problem describes the interaction between free flow in macrofractures/conduits, governed by the Stokes equations, and flow in microfractures/matrix, governed by a dual-porosity model. We prove that the HDG method is strongly conservative, well-posed, and give an a priori error analysis showing dependence on the problem parameters. Our theoretical findings are corroborated by numerical examples

Space-time hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for advection-diffusion on deforming domains: The advection-dominated regime

We analyze a space-time hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method to solve the time-dependent advection-diffusion equation on deforming domains. We prove stability of the discretization in the advection-dominated regime by using weighted test functions and derive a priori space-time error estimates. A numerical example illustrates the theoretical results.

Hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin methods for the coupled Stokes--Biot problem

We present and analyze a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) finite element method for the coupled Stokes--Biot problem. Of particular interest is that the discrete velocities and displacement are $H(\text{div})$-conforming and satisfy the compressibility equations pointwise on the elements. Furthermore, in the incompressible limit, the discretization is strongly conservative. We prove well-posedness of the discretization and, after combining the HDG method with backward Euler time stepping, present a priori error estimates that demonstrate that the method is free of volumetric locking. Numerical examples further demonstrate optimal rates of convergence in the $L^2$-norm for all unknowns and that the discretization is locking-free.

A hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for the coupled Navier-Stokes and Darcy problem

We present and analyze a strongly conservative hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin finite element method for the coupled incompressible Navier-Stokes and Darcy problem with Beavers-Joseph-Saffman interface condition. An a priori error analysis shows that the velocity error does not depend on the pressure, and that velocity and pressure converge with optimal rates. These results are confirmed by numerical examples.

Analysis of an embedded-hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for Biot's consolidation model

We present an embedded-hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin finite element method for the total pressure formulation of the quasi-static poroelasticity model. Although the displacement and the Darcy velocity are approximated by discontinuous piece-wise polynomials, $H(\text{div})$-conformity of these unknowns is enforced by Lagrange multipliers. The semi-discrete problem is shown to be stable and the fully discrete problem is shown to be well-posed. Additionally, space-time a priori error estimates are derived, and confirmed by numerical examples, that show that the proposed discretization is free of volumetric locking.

A hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for the fully coupled time-dependent Stokes/Darcy-transport problem

We present a high-order hybridized discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method for the fully coupled time-dependent Stokes-Darcy-transport problem where the fluid viscosity and source/sink terms depend on the concentration and the dispersion/diffusion tensor depends on the fluid velocity. This HDG method is such that the discrete flow equations are compatible with the discrete transport equation. Furthermore, the HDG method guarantees strong mass conservation in the $H^{\rm div}$ sense and naturally treats the interface conditions between the Stokes and Darcy regions via facet variables. We employ a linearizing decoupling strategy where the Stokes/Darcy and the transport equations are solved sequentially by time-lagging the concentration. We prove well-posedness and optimal a priori error estimates for the velocity and the concentration in the energy norm. We present numerical examples that respect compatibility of the flow and transport discretizations and demonstrate that the discrete solution is robust with respect to the problem parameters.

An algebraic preconditioner for the exactly divergence-free discontinuous Galerkin method for Stokes

We present an optimal preconditioner for the exactly divergence-free discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretization of Cockburn, Kanschat, and Schötzau [J. Sci. Comput., 31 (2007), pp. 61--73] and Wang and Ye [SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 45 (2007), pp. 1269--1286] for the Stokes problem. This DG method uses finite elements that use an $H({\rm div})$-conforming basis, thereby significantly complicating its solution by iterative methods. Several preconditioners for this Stokes discretization have been developed, but each is based on specialized solvers or decompositions, and do not offer a clear framework to generalize to Navier--Stokes. To avoid requiring custom solvers, we hybridize the $H({\rm div})$-conforming finite element so that the velocity lives in a standard $L^2$-DG space, and present a simple algebraic preconditioner for the extended hybridized system. The proposed preconditioner is optimal in $h$, super robust in element order (demonstrated up to 5th order), effective in 2d and 3d, and only relies on standard relaxation and algebraic multigrid methods available in many packages. The hybridization also naturally extends to Navier--Stokes, providing a potential pathway to effective black-box preconditioners for exactly divergence-free DG discretizations of Navier--Stokes.

An interface-tracking space-time hybridizable/embedded discontinuous Galerkin method for nonlinear free-surface flows

We present a compatible space-time hybridizable/embedded discontinuous Galerkin discretization for nonlinear free-surface waves. We pose this problem in a two-fluid (liquid and gas) domain and use a time-dependent level-set function to identify the sharp interface between the two fluids. The incompressible two-fluidd equations are discretized by an exactly mass conserving space-time hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method while the level-set equation is discretized by a space-time embedded discontinuous Galerkin method. Different from alternative discontinuous Galerkin methods is that the embedded discontinuous Galerkin method results in a continuous approximation of the interface. This, in combination with the space-time framework, results in an interface-tracking method without resorting to smoothing techniques or additional mesh stabilization terms.

Convergence to weak solutions of a space-time hybridized discontinuous Galerkin method for the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations

We prove that a space-time hybridized discontinuous Galerkin method for the evolutionary Navier--Stokes equations converges to a weak solution as the time step and mesh size tend to zero. Moreover, we show that this weak solution satisfies the energy inequality. To perform our analysis, we make use of discrete functional analysis tools and a discrete version of the Aubin--Lions--Simon theorem.
