Predictive coding: A Possible Explanation of Filling-in at the blind spot

Filling-in at the blind-spot is a perceptual phenomenon in which the visual system fills the informational void, which arises due to the absence of retinal input corresponding to the optic disc, with surrounding visual attributes. Though there are enough evidence to conclude that some kind of neural computation is involved in filling-in at the blind spot especially in the early visual cortex, the knowledge of the actual computational mechanism is far from complete. We have investigated the bar experiments and the associated filling-in phenomenon in the light of the hierarchical predictive coding framework, where the blind-spot was represented by the absence of early feed-forward connection. We recorded the responses of predictive estimator neurons at the blind-spot region in the V1 area of our three level (LGN-V1-V2) model network. These responses are in agreement with the results of earlier physiological studies and using the generative model we also showed that these response profiles indeed represent the filling-in completion. These demonstrate that predictive coding framework could account for the filling-in phenomena observed in several psychophysical and physiological experiments involving bar stimuli. These results suggest that the filling-in could naturally arise from the computational principle of hierarchical predictive coding (HPC) of natural images.

Investigation of stochastic resonance (SR) near homoclinic bifurcation in a unijunction transistor (UJT) relaxation oscillator

A P-spice simulation followed by an experiment with a unijunction transistor (UJT) has been carried out to investigate stochastic resonance (SR) in which the response of a nonlinear system to a weak periodic input signal is amplified by an optimum level of noise. The experiments were carried out in the vicinity of homoclinic bifurcation and the quantification of SR has been done by normal variance (NV) and signal to noise ratio (SNR) techniques. We have also developed a tentative mathematical model based on the current-voltage characteristic of the UJT and obtained a second order differential equation that was solved using MATLAB to yield a response similar to the one observed experimentally.

Comparison of Bulk Micromegas with Different Amplification Gaps

The bulk Micromegas detector is considered to be a promising candidate for building TPCs for several future experiments including the projected linear collider. The standard bulk with a spacing of 128 micron has already established itself as a good choice for its performances in terms of gas gain uniformity, energy and space point resolution, and its capability to efficiently pave large readout surfaces with minimum dead zone. The present work involves the comparison of this standard bulk with a relatively less used bulk Micromegas detector having a larger amplification gap of 192 micron. Detector gain, energy resolution and electron transparency of these Micromegas have been measured under different conditions in various argon based gas mixtures to evaluate their performance. These measured characteristics have also been compared in detail to numerical simulations using the Garfield framework that combines packages such as neBEM, Magboltz and Heed. Further, we have carried out another numerical study to determine the effect of dielectric spacers on different detector features. A comprehensive comparison of the two detectors has been presented and analyzed in this work.

A Possible Model of Noise Enhanced Visual Perception in Human Vision

We demonstrate, through simulation, that a simple centre surround receptive field of vision is capable of exhibiting stochastic resonance. We also show that this could be used to model the nature of contrast sensitivity enhancement of human vision, through stochastic resonance, observed in psychophysical experiments.

Can Centre Surround Model Explain the Enhancement of Visual Perception through Stochastic Resonance?

We demonstrate the ability of centre surround model for simulating the enhancement of contrast sensitivity through stochastic resonance observed in psychophysical experiments. We also show that this model could be used to simulate the contrast sensitivity function through stochastic resonance. The quality of the fit of measured contrast sensitivity function to the simulated data is very good.

Laser Actuated Presentation System

We present here a pattern sensitive PowerPoint presentation scheme. The presentation is actuated by simple patterns drawn on the presentation screen by a laser pointer. A specific pattern corresponds to a particular command required to operate the presentation. Laser spot on the screen is captured by a RGB webcam with a red filter mounted, and its location is identified at the blue layer of each captured frame by estimating the mean position of the pixels whose intensity is above a given threshold value. Measured Reliability, Accuracy and Latency of our system are 90%, 10 pixels (in the worst case) and 38 ms respectively.

A possible low-level explanation of "temporal dynamics of brightness induction and White's illusion"

Based upon physiological observation on time dependent orientation selectivity in the cells of macaque's primary visual cortex together with the psychophysical studies on the tuning of orientation detectors in human vision we suggest that time dependence in brightness perception can be accommodated through the time evolution of cortical contribution to the orientation tuning of the ODoG filter responses. A set of Difference of Gaussians functions has been used to mimic the time dependence of orientation tuning. The tuning of orientation preference and its inversion at a later time have been considered in explaining qualitatively the temporal dynamics of brightness perception observed in "Brief presentations reveal the temporal dynamics of brightness induction and White's illusion" for 58 and 82 ms of stimulus exposure.

Coherence resonance in an unijunction transistor relaxation oscillator

The phenomenon of coherence resonance (CR) is investigated in an unijunction transistor relaxation oscillator (UJT-RO) and quantified by estimating the normal variance (NV). Depending upon the measuring points two types of NV curves have been obtained. We have observed that the degradations in coherency at higher noise amplitudes in our system is probably the result of direct interference of coherent oscillations and the stochastic perturbation. Degradation of coherency may be minimal if this direct interference of noise and coherent oscillations is eliminated.
