A Bound on Massive Higher Spin Particles

According to common lore, massive elementary higher spin particles lead to inconsistencies when coupled to gravity. However, this scenario was not completely ruled out by previous arguments. In this paper, we show that in a theory where the low energy dynamics of the gravitons are governed by the Einstein-Hilbert action, any finite number of massive elementary particles with spin more than two cannot interact with gravitons, even classically, in a way that preserves causality. This is achieved in flat spacetime by studying eikonal scattering of higher spin particles in more than three spacetime dimensions. Our argument is insensitive to the physics above the effective cut-off scale and closes certain loopholes in previous arguments. Furthermore, it applies to higher spin particles even if they do not contribute to tree-level graviton scattering as a consequence of being charged under a global symmetry such as $\mathbb{Z}_2$. We derive analogous bounds in anti-de Sitter spacetime from analyticity properties of correlators of the dual CFT in the Regge limit. We also argue that an infinite tower of fine-tuned higher spin particles can still be consistent with causality. However, they necessarily affect the dynamics of gravitons at an energy scale comparable to the mass of the lightest higher spin particle. Finally, we apply the bound in de Sitter to impose restrictions on the structure of three-point functions in the squeezed limit of the scalar curvature perturbation produced during inflation.

A Conformal Collider for Holographic CFTs

We develop a formalism to study the implications of causality on OPE coefficients in conformal field theories with large central charge and a sparse spectrum of higher spin operators. The formalism has the interpretation of a new conformal collider-type experiment for these class of CFTs and hence it has the advantage of requiring knowledge only about CFT three-point functions. This is accomplished by considering the holographic null energy operator which was introduced in arXiv:1709.03597 as a generalization of the averaged null energy operator. Analyticity properties of correlators in the Regge limit imply that the holographic null energy operator is a positive operator in a subspace of the total CFT Hilbert space. Utilizing this positivity condition, we derive bounds on three-point functions $\langle TO_1O_2\rangle$ of the stress tensor with various operators for CFTs with large central charge and a sparse spectrum. After imposing these constraints, we also find that the operator product expansions of all primary operators in the Regge limit have certain universal properties. All of these results are consistent with the expectation that CFTs in this class, irrespective of their microscopic details, admit universal gravity-like holographic dual descriptions. Furthermore, this connection enables us to constrain various inflationary observables such as the amplitude of chiral gravity waves, non-gaussanity of gravity waves and tensor-to-scalar ratio.

Bulk Matter and the Boundary Quantum Null Energy Condition

We investigate the quantum null energy condition (QNEC) in holographic CFTs, focusing on half-spaces and particular classes of states. We present direct, and in certain cases nonperturbative, calculations for both the diagonal and off- diagonal variational derivatives of entanglement entropy. In d > 2, we find that the QNEC is saturated. We compute relations between the off-diagonal variation of entanglement, boundary relative entropy, and the bulk stress tensor. Strong subadditivity then leads to energy conditions in the bulk. In d = 2, we find that the QNEC is in general not saturated when the Ryu-Takayanagi surface intersects bulk matter. Moreover, when bulk matter is present the QNEC can imply new bulk energy conditions. For a simple class of states, we derive an example that is stronger than the bulk averaged null energy condition and reduces to it in certain limits.

Einstein gravity 3-point functions from conformal field theory

We study stress tensor correlation functions in four-dimensional conformal field theories with large $N$ and a sparse spectrum. Theories in this class are expected to have local holographic duals, so effective field theory in anti-de Sitter suggests that the stress tensor sector should exhibit universal, gravity-like behavior. At the linearized level, the hallmark of locality in the emergent geometry is that stress tensor three-point functions $\langle TTT\rangle$, normally specified by three constants, should approach a universal structure controlled by a single parameter as the gap to higher spin operators is increased. We demonstrate this phenomenon by a direct CFT calculation. Stress tensor exchange, by itself, violates causality and unitarity unless the three-point functions are carefully tuned, and the unique consistent choice exactly matches the prediction of Einstein gravity. Under some assumptions about the other potential contributions, we conclude that this structure is universal, and in particular, that the anomaly coefficients satisfy $a\approx c$ as conjectured by Camanho et al. The argument is based on causality of a four-point function, with kinematics designed to probe bulk locality, and invokes the chaos bound of Maldacena, Shenker, and Stanford.

Shockwaves from the Operator Product Expansion

We clarify and further explore the CFT dual of shockwave geometries in Anti-de Sitter. The shockwave is dual to a CFT state produced by a heavy local operator inserted at a complex point. It can also be created by light operators, smeared over complex positions. We describe the dictionary in both cases, and compare to various calculations, old and new. In CFT, we analyze the operator product expansion in the Regge limit, and find that the leading contribution is exactly the shockwave operator, $\int du h_{uu}$, localized on a bulk geodesic. For heavy sources this is a simple consequence of conformal invariance, but for light operators it involves a smearing procedure that projects out certain double-trace contributions to the OPE. We revisit causality constraints in large-$N$ CFT from this perspective, and show that the chaos bound in CFT coincides with a bulk condition proposed by Engelhardt and Fischetti. In particular states, this reproduces known constraints on CFT 3-point couplings, and confirms some assumptions about double-trace operators made in previous work.

Spread of entanglement for small subsystems in holographic CFTs

We develop an analytic perturbative expansion to study the propagation of entanglement entropy for small subsystems after a global quench, in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. Opposite to the large interval limit, in this case the evolution of the system takes place at timescales that are shorter in comparison to the local equilibration scale and thus, different physical mechanisms govern the dynamics and subsequent thermalization. In particular, we show that the heuristic picture in terms of a "entanglement tsunami" does not apply in this regime. We find two crucial differences. First, that the instantaneous rate of growth of the entanglement is not constrained by causality, but rather its time average. And second, that the approach to saturation is always continuous, regardless the shape of the entangling surface. Our analytic expansion also enables us to verify some previous numerical results, namely, that the saturation time is non-monotonic with respect to the chemical potential. All of our results are pertinent to CFTs with a classical gravity dual formulation.

Physical Effects of the Gravitational $Θ$-Parameter

We describe the effect of the gravitational $Θ$-parameter on the behavior of the stretched horizon of a black hole in $(3+1)$-dimensions. The gravitational $Θ$-term is a total derivative, however, it affects the transport properties of the horizon. In particular, the horizon acquires a third order parity violating, dimensionless transport coefficient which affects the way localized perturbations scramble on the horizon. In the context of the gauge/gravity duality, the $Θ$-term induces a non-trivial contact term in the energy-momentum tensor of a $(2+1)-$dimensional large-N gauge theory, which admits a dual gravity description. As a consequence, the dual gauge theory in the presence of the $Θ$-term acquires the same third order parity violating transport coefficient.

Averaged Null Energy Condition from Causality

Unitary, Lorentz-invariant quantum field theories in flat spacetime obey microcausality: commutators vanish at spacelike separation. For interacting theories in more than two dimensions, we show that this implies that the averaged null energy, $\int du T_{uu}$, must be positive. This non-local operator appears in the operator product expansion of local operators in the lightcone limit, and therefore contributes to $n$-point functions. We derive a sum rule that isolates this contribution and is manifestly positive. The argument also applies to certain higher spin operators other than the stress tensor, generating an infinite family of new constraints of the form $\int du X_{uuu\cdots u} \geq 0$. These lead to new inequalities for the coupling constants of spinning operators in conformal field theory, which include as special cases (but are generally stronger than) the existing constraints from the lightcone bootstrap, deep inelastic scattering, conformal collider methods, and relative entropy. We also comment on the relation to the recent derivation of the averaged null energy condition from relative entropy, and suggest a more general connection between causality and information-theoretic inequalities in QFT.

Efficient L1-Norm Principal-Component Analysis via Bit Flipping

It was shown recently that the $K$ L1-norm principal components (L1-PCs) of a real-valued data matrix $\mathbf X \in \mathbb R^{D \times N}$ ($N$ data samples of $D$ dimensions) can be exactly calculated with cost $\mathcal{O}(2^{NK})$ or, when advantageous, $\mathcal{O}(N^{dK - K + 1})$ where $d=\mathrm{rank}(\mathbf X)$, $K<d$ [1],[2]. In applications where $\mathbf X$ is large (e.g., "big" data of large $N$ and/or "heavy" data of large $d$), these costs are prohibitive. In this work, we present a novel suboptimal algorithm for the calculation of the $K < d$ L1-PCs of $\mathbf X$ of cost $\mathcal O(ND \mathrm{min} \{ N,D\} + N^2(K^4 + dK^2) + dNK^3)$, which is comparable to that of standard (L2-norm) PC analysis. Our theoretical and experimental studies show that the proposed algorithm calculates the exact optimal L1-PCs with high frequency and achieves higher value in the L1-PC optimization metric than any known alternative algorithm of comparable computational cost. The superiority of the calculated L1-PCs over standard L2-PCs (singular vectors) in characterizing potentially faulty data/measurements is demonstrated with experiments on data dimensionality reduction and disease diagnosis from genomic data.

Causality Constraints in Conformal Field Theory

Causality places nontrivial constraints on QFT in Lorentzian signature, for example fixing the signs of certain terms in the low energy Lagrangian. In d-dimensional conformal field theory, we show how such constraints are encoded in crossing symmetry of Euclidean correlators, and derive analogous constraints directly from the conformal bootstrap (analytically). The bootstrap setup is a Lorentzian four-point function corresponding to propagation through a shockwave. Crossing symmetry fixes the signs of certain log terms that appear in the conformal block expansion, which constrains the interactions of low-lying operators. As an application, we use the bootstrap to rederive the well known sign constraint on the $(\partialϕ)^4$ coupling in effective field theory, from a dual CFT. We also find constraints on theories with higher spin conserved currents. Our analysis is restricted to scalar correlators, but we argue that similar methods should also impose nontrivial constraints on the interactions of spinning operators.

Emergent Horizons and Causal Structures in Holography

The open string metric arises kinematically in studying fluctuations of open string degrees of freedom on a D-brane. An observer, living on a probe D-brane, can send signals through the spacetime by using such fluctuations on the probe, that propagate in accordance with a metric which is conformal to the open string metric. Event horizons can emerge in the open string metric when one considers a D-brane with an electric field on its worldvolume. Here, we emphasize the role of and investigate, in details, the causal structure of the resulting open string event horizon and demonstrate, among other things, its close similarities to an usual black hole event horizon in asymptotically AdS-spaces. To that end, we analyze relevant geodesics, Penrose diagrams and various causal holographic observables for a given open string metric. For analytical control, most of our calculations are performed in an asymptotically AdS$_3$-background, however, we argue that the physics is qualitatively the same in higher dimensions. We also discuss how this open string metric arises from an underlying D-brane configuration in string theory.

Membrane Paradigm, Gravitational $Θ$-Term and Gauge/Gravity Duality

Following the membrane paradigm, we explore the effect of the gravitational $Θ$-term on the behavior of the stretched horizon of a black hole in (3+1)-dimensions. We reformulate the membrane paradigm from a quantum path-integral point of view where we interpret the macroscopic properties of the horizon as effects of integrating out the region inside the horizon. The gravitational $Θ$-term is a total derivative, however, using our framework we show that this term affects the transport properties of the horizon. In particular, the horizon acquires a third order parity violating, dimensionless transport coefficient which affects the way localized perturbations scramble on the horizon. Then we consider a large-N gauge theory in (2+1)-dimensions which is dual to an asymptotically AdS background in (3+1)-dimensional spacetime to show that the $Θ$-term induces a non-trivial contact term in the energy-momentum tensor of the dual theory. As a consequence, the dual gauge theory in the presence of the $Θ$-term acquires the same third order parity violating transport coefficient.

Aspects of Holographic Entanglement at Finite Temperature and Chemical Potential

We investigate the behavior of entanglement entropy at finite temperature and chemical potential for strongly coupled large-N gauge theories in $d$-dimensions ($d\ge 3$) that are dual to Anti-de Sitter-Reissner-Nordstrom geometries in $(d+1)-$dimensions, in the context of gauge-gravity duality. We develop systematic expansions based on the Ryu-Takayanagi prescription that enable us to derive analytic expressions for entanglement entropy and mutual information in different regimes of interest. Consequently, we identify the specific regions of the bulk geometry that contribute most significantly to the entanglement entropy of the boundary theory at different limits. We define a scale, dubbed as the effective temperature, which determines the behavior of entanglement in different regimes. At high effective temperature, entanglement entropy is dominated by the thermodynamic entropy, however, mutual information subtracts out this contribution and measures the actual quantum entanglement. Finally, we study the entanglement/disentanglement transition of mutual information in the presence of chemical potential which shows that the quantum entanglement between two sub-regions decreases with the increase of chemical potential.

A New Spin on Causality Constraints

Causality in a shockwave state is related to the analytic properties of a four-point correlation function. Extending recent results for scalar probes, we show that this constrains the couplings of the stress tensor to light spinning operators in conformal field theory, and interpret these constraints in terms of the interaction with null energy. For spin-1 and spin-2 conserved currents in four dimensions, the resulting inequalities are a subset of the Hofman-Maldacena conditions for positive energy deposition. It is well known that energy conditions in holographic theories are related to causality on the gravity side; our results make a connection on the CFT side, and extend it to non-holographic theories.

Flavour Fields in Steady State: Stress Tensor and Free Energy

The dynamics of a probe brane in a given gravitational background is governed by the Dirac-Born-Infeld action. The corresponding open string metric arises naturally in studying the fluctuations on the probe. In Gauge-String duality, it is known that in the presence of a constant electric field on the worldvolume of the probe, the open string metric acquires an event horizon and therefore the fluctuation modes on the probe experience an effective temperature. In this article, we bring together various properties of such a system to a formal definition and a subsequent narration of the effective thermodynamics and the stress tensor of the corresponding flavour fields, also including a non-vanishing chemical potential. In doing so, we point out a potentially infinitely-degenerate scheme-dependence of regularizing the free energy, which nevertheless yields a universal contribution in certain cases. This universal piece appears as the coefficient of a log-divergence in free energy when a space-filling probe brane is embedded in AdS$_{d+1}$-background, for $d=2, 4$, and is related to conformal anomaly. For the special case of $d=2$, the universal factor has a striking resemblance to the well-known heat current formula in $(1+1)$-dimensional conformal field theory in steady-state, which endows a plausible physical interpretation to it. Interestingly, we observe a vanishing conformal anomaly in $d=6$.

Hall Scrambling on Black Hole Horizons

We explore the effect of the electrodynamics $θ$-angle on the macroscopic properties of black hole horizons. Using only classical Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory in (3+1)-dimensions, in the form of the membrane paradigm, we show that in the presence of the $θ$-term, a black hole horizon behaves as a Hall conductor, for an observer hovering outside. We study how localized perturbations created on the stretched horizon scramble on the horizon by dropping a charged particle. We show that the $θ$-angle affects the way perturbations scramble on the horizon, in particular, it introduces vortices without changing the scrambling time. This Hall scrambling of information is also expected to occur on cosmological horizons.

Steady-state Physics, Effective Temperature Dynamics in Holography

Using the gauge-gravity duality, we argue that for a certain class of out-of-equilibrium steady-state systems in contact with a thermal background at a given temperature, the macroscopic physics can be captured by an effective thermodynamic description. The steady-state is obtained by applying a constant electric field that results in a stationary current flow. Within holography, we consider generic probe systems where an open string equivalence principle and an open string metric govern the effective thermodynamics. This description comes equipped with an effective temperature, which is larger than the background temperature, and a corresponding effective entropy. For conformal or scale-invariant theories, certain scaling behaviours follow immediately. In general, in the large electric field limit, this effective temperature is also observed to obey generic relations with various physical parameters in the system.

Entanglement and out-of-equilibrium dynamics in holographic models of de Sitter QFTs

In this paper we study various aspects of entanglement entropy in strongly-coupled de Sitter quantum field theories in various dimensions. We find gravity solutions that are dual to field theories in a fixed de Sitter background, both in equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium configurations. The latter corresponds to the Vaidya generalization of the AdS black hole solutions with hyperbolic topology. We compute analytically the entanglement entropy of spherical regions and show that there is a transition when the sphere is as big as the horizon. We also explore thermalization in time-dependent situations in which the system evolves from a non-equilibrium state to the Bunch-Davies state. We find that the saturation time is equal to the light-crossing time of the sphere. This behavior is faster than random walk and suggests the existence of free light-like degrees of freedom.
