Polyhedral adjunction theory

In this paper we give a combinatorial view on the adjunction theory of toric varieties. Inspired by classical adjunction theory of polarized algebraic varieties we define two convex-geometric notions: the Q-codegree and the nef value of a rational polytope P. We define the adjoint polytope P^(s) as the set of those points in P, whose lattice distance to every facet of P is at least s. We prove a structure theorem for lattice polytopes P with high Q-codegree. If P^(s) is empty for some s < 2/(dim(P)+2), then the lattice polytope P has lattice width one. This has consequences in Ehrhart theory and on polarized toric varieties with dual defect. Moreover, we illustrate how classification results in adjunction theory can be translated into new classification results for lattice polytopes.

Mixed Discriminants

The mixed discriminant of n Laurent polynomials in n variables is the irreducible polynomial in the coefficients which vanishes whenever two of the roots coincide. The Cayley trick expresses the mixed discriminant as an A-discriminant. We show that the degree of the mixed discriminant is a piecewise linear function in the Plucker coordinates of a mixed Grassmannian. An explicit degree formula is given for the case of plane curves.

Recent developments and open problems in linear series

In the week 3--9, October 2010, the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut at Oberwolfach hosted a mini workshop Linear Series on Algebraic Varieties. These notes contain a variety of interesting problems which motivated the participants prior to the event, and examples, results and further problems which grew out of discussions during and shortly after the workshop. A lot of arguments presented here are scattered in the literature or constitute folklore. It was one of our aims to have a usable and easily accessible collection of examples and results.

A primer on Seshadri constants

Seshadri constants express the so called local positivity of a line bundle on a projective variety. They were introduced by Demailly. The original idea of using them towards a proof of the Fujita conjecture failed but they quickly became a subject of intensive study quite in their own right. Lazarsfeld's book "Positivity in Algebraic Geometry" contains a whole chapter devoted to local positivity and serves as a very enjoyable introduction to Seshadri constants. Since this book has appeared, the subject witnessed quite a bit of development. It is the aim of these notes to give an account of recent progress as well as to discuss many open questions and provide some examples.

Chern Numbers of Smooth Varieties via Homotopy Continuation and Intersection Theory

Homotopy continuation provides a numerical tool for computing the equivalence of a smooth variety in an intersection product. Intersection theory provides a theoretical tool for relating the equivalence of a smooth variety in an intersection product to the degrees of the Chern classes of the variety. A combination of these tools leads to a numerical method for computing the degrees of Chern classes of smooth projective varieties in P^n. We illustrate the approach through several worked examples.

Classifying smooth lattice polytopes via toric fibrations

We define Q-normal lattice polytopes. Natural examples of such polytopes are Cayley sums of strictly combinatorially equivalent lattice polytopes, which correspond to particularly nice toric fibrations, namely toric projective bundles. In a recent paper Batyrev and Nill have suggested that there should be a bound, N(d), such that every lattice polytope of degree d and dimension at least N(d) decomposes as a Cayley sum. We give a sharp answer to this question for smooth Q-normal polytopes. We show that any smooth Q-normal lattice polytope P of dimension n and degree d is a Cayley sum of strictly combinatorially equivalent polytopes if n is greater than or equal to 2d+1. The proof relies on the study of the nef value morphism associated to the corresponding toric embedding.

Higher Order Bad Loci

Zero-schemes on smooth complex projective varieties, forcing all elements of ample and free linear systems to be reducible are studied. Relationships among the minimal length of such zero-schemes, the positivity of the line bundle associated with the linear system, and the dimension of the variety are established. A generalization to higher dimension subschemes is studied in the last section.

Toric manifolds with degenerate dual variety and defect polytopes

We classify projective toric manifolds whose dual variety is not a hypersurface in the dual projective space. Under the standard dictionary between toric geometry and convex geometry, they correspond to certain convex Delzant integer polytopes, P, which we call defect polytopes. Using the geometrical classification we give a detailed description of defect polytopes and prove that they are characterized by the vanishing of a combinatorial invariant, denoted by c(P). We further prove that a related invariant, c*(P), is nonnegative, for any simple convex integral polytope.

Peculiar Loci of Ample and Spanned Line Bundles

The bad locus and the rude locus of an ample and base point free linear system on a smooth complex projective variety are introduced and studied. The bad locus is defined as the set of points that force divisors through them to be reducible. The rude locus is defined as the set of points such that divisors that are singular at them are forced to be reducible. The existence of a nonmempty bad locus is shown to be exclusively a two dimensional phenomenon. Polarized surfaces of small degree, or whose degree is the square of a prime, with nonempty bad loci are completely classified. Several explicit examples are offered to describe the variety of behaviors of the two loci.

On polarized surfaces of low degree whose adjont bundles are not spanned

Smooth complex surfaces polarized with an ample and globally generated line bundle of degree three and four, such that the adjoint bundle is not globally generated, are considered. Scrolls of a vector bundle over a smooth curve are shown to be the only examples in degree three. Two classes of examples in degree four are presented, one of which is shown to characterize regular such pairs. A Reider-type theorem is obtained in which the assumption on the degree of the polarization is removed.

Chern Numbers of Ample Vector Bundles on Toric Surfaces

Let $\sE$ be an ample rank $r$ bundle on a smooth toric projective surface, $S$, whose topological Euler characteristic is $e(S)$. In this article, we prove a number of surprisingly strong lower bounds for $c_1(\sE)^2$ and $c_2(\sE)$. We also enumerate the exceptions to either the inequality $c_1(\sE)^2\ge 4e(S)$ or the inequality $c_2(\sE)\ge e(S)$ holding.

Cyclic coverings and higher order embeddings of algebraic varieties

An algebraic variety X is embedded to the order k via a line bundle L if the global sections of L generate all (simultaneous) jets of order k on X or if they separate all zero-dimensional subschemes of length at most k+1. Even though we refer to both situations as "higher order embeddings", the first notion (in which case L is said to be k-jet ample) is stronger than the second one (when L is k-very ample). The purpose of this paper is to study higher order embeddings of cyclic coverings π:Y\to X via line bundles given by pulling back "sufficiently positive" line bundles on X. Given a line bundle L on X, we relate the order of the embedding defined by π^*L to that of L and of certain rank 1 summands of the vector bundle L\tensorπ_*\calo_Y. As expected, the sufficient conditions for π^*L to be k-jet ample are stronger then the ones needed in order for π^*L to be k-very ample.

Generation of $k$-jets on Toric Varieties

In this notes we study $k$-jet ample line bundles $L$ on a non singular toric variety $X$, i.e. line bundles with global sections having arbitrarily prescribed $k$-jets at a finite number of points. We introduce the notion of an associated $k$-convex $\D$-support function, $ψ_L$, requiring that the polyhedra $P_L$ has edges of length at least $k$. This translates to the property that the intersection of $L$ with the invariant curves, associated to every edge, is $\geq k$. We also state an equivalent criterion in terms of a bound of the Seshadri constant $\e(L,x)$. More precisely we prove the equivalence of the following: (1) $L$ is $k$-jet ample; (2) $L\cdot C\geq k$, for any invariant curve $C$; (3) $ψ_L$ is $k$-convex; (4) the Seshadri constant $\e(L,x)\geq k$ for each $x\in X$.

On The Projective Normality of Smooth Surfaces of degree nine

We investigate the projective normality of smooth, linearly normal surfaces of degree 9. All non projectively normal surfaces which are not scrolls over a curve are classified. Results on the projective normality of surface scrolls are also given. One of the reasons that brought us to look at this question is our desire to find examples for a long standing problem in adjunction theory. Andreatta followed by a generalization by Ein and Lazarsfeld posed the problem of classifying smooth n-dimensional varieties (X,L) polarized with a very ample line bundle L, such that the adjoint linear system |H| = |K + (n-1)L| gives an embedding which is not projectively normal. After a detailed check of the non projectively normal surfaces found in this work no examples were found except possibly a blow up of an elliptic P^1-bundle whose existence is uncertain.

On surfaces in P^6 with no trisecant lines

We construct examples of smooth surfaces S in P^6 with no trisecant lines. This list includes examples of surfaces not cut out by quadrics. We prove that unless S has a finite number of disjoint $(-1)$-lines, and each one meets some other line L on the surface with L^2\leq -2, and S is not an inner projection from P^7 the surface belongs to the list of examples.

k-very ample line bundles on Del Pezzo Surfaces

A $k$-very ample line bundle L on a Del Pezzo Surface is numerically characterized. We find that the set of the exceptional curves and effective divisors with selfintersection zero, $\cal S$, plays a very important rule in checking the nefness and $k$-very ampleness of a line bundle on a Del pezzo Surface. We show that a line bundle L is nef if and only if it is spanned and that L is $k$-very ample if and only if the intersection with all the elements of $\cal S$ is greater or equal than k. In the first part of the paper we give a complete numerical description of the elements of $\cal S$ .
