Phase-contrast THz-CT for non-destructive testing

A new approach for image reconstruction in THz computed tomography (THz-CT) is presented. Based on a geometrical optics model containing the THz signal amplitude and phase, a novel algorithm for extracting an average phase from the measured THz signals is derived. Applying the algorithm results in a phase-contrast sinogram, which is further used for image reconstruction. For experimental validation, a fast THz time-domain spectrometer (THz-TDS) in transmission geometry is employed, enabling CT measurements within several minutes. Quantitative evaluation of reconstructed 3D printed plastic profiles reveals the potential of our approach in non-destructive testing of plastic profiles.

A mathematical approach towards THz tomography for non-destructive imaging

In this paper, we consider the imaging problem of terahertz (THz) tomography, in particular as it appears in non-destructive testing. We derive a nonlinear mathematical model describing a full THz tomography experiment, and consider linear approximations connecting THz tomography with standard computerized tomography and the Radon transform. Based on the derived models we propose different reconstruction approaches for solving the THz tomography problem, which we then compare on experimental data obtained from THz measurements of a plastic sample.

Matter-wave recombiners for trapped Bose-Einstein condensates

Interferometry with trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) requires the development of techniques to recombine the two paths of the interferometer and map the accumulated phase difference to a measurable atom number difference. We have implemented and compared two recombining procedures in a double-well based BEC interferometer. The first procedure utilizes the bosonic Josephson effect and controlled tunneling of atoms through the potential barrier, similar to laser light in an optical fibre coupler. The second one relies on the interference of the reflected and transmitted parts of the BEC wavefunction when impinging on the potential barrier, analogous to light impinging on a half-silvered mirror. Both schemes were implemented successfully, yielding an interferometric contrast of about 20% and 42% respectively. Building efficient matter wave recombiners represents an important step towards the coherent manipulation of external quantum superposition states of BECs.

Interferometry with non-classical motional states of a Bose-Einstein condensate

We demonstrate a two-pulse Ramsey-type interferometer for non-classical motional states of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an anharmonic trap. The control pulses used to manipulate the condensate wavefunction are obtained from Optimal Control Theory and directly optimised to maximise the interferometric contrast. They permit a fast manipulation of the atomic ensemble compared to the intrinsic decay and many-body dephasing effects, and thus to reach an interferometric contrast of 92% in the experimental implementation.

Integrated Mach-Zehnder interferometer for Bose-Einstein condensates

Particle-wave duality enables the construction of interferometers for matter waves, which complement optical interferometers in precision measurement devices. This requires the development of atom-optics analogs to beam splitters, phase shifters, and recombiners. Integrating these elements into a single device has been a long-standing goal. Here we demonstrate a full Mach-Zehnder sequence with trapped Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) confined on an atom chip. Particle interactions in our BEC matter waves lead to a non-linearity, absent in photon optics. We exploit it to generate a non-classical state having reduced number fluctuations inside the interferometer. Making use of spatially separated wave packets, a controlled phase shift is applied and read out by a non-adiabatic matter-wave recombiner. We demonstrate coherence times a factor of three beyond what is expected for coherent states, highlighting the potential of entanglement as a resource for metrology. Our results pave the way for integrated quantum-enhanced matter-wave sensors.

Vibrational state inversion of a Bose-Einstein condensate: optimal control and state tomography

We present theoretical and experimental results on high-fidelity transfer of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate into its first vibrationally excited eigenstate. The excitation is driven by mechanical motion of the trap, along a trajectory obtained from optimal control theory. Excellent agreement between theory and experiment is found over a large range of parameters. We develop an approximate model to map the dynamics of the many-body condensate wave function to a driven two-level system.

Dynamics of parametric matter wave amplification

We develop a model for parametric amplification, based on a density matrix approach, which naturally accounts for the peculiarities arising for matter waves: significant depletion and explicit time-dependence of the source state population, long interaction times, and spatial dynamics of the amplified modes. We apply our model to explain the details in an experimental study on twin-atom beam emission from a one-dimensional degenerate Bose gas.
