How to Study Reflected Brownian Motion in a Quadrant via Kernel Functional Equations? A short survey

We survey a line of works studying semimartingale reflected Brownian motion in a quadrant, covering both the non-degenerate and degenerate settings. Two main situations are emphasized: the recurrent case, where an invariant measure exists, and the transient case, where the central objects are Green's functions (potential measures). These measures typically arise from Kolmogorov forward equations. For transient or killed models one is also interested in the Martin boundary of the process and, consequently, in all positive harmonic functions, which satisfy Kolmogorov backward equations. Depending on the geometry and parameters of the model, these harmonic functions often admit probabilistic interpretations in terms of absorption, escape, or drift to infinity. All these measures and functions are studied through kernel functional equations satisfied by their Laplace transforms. Several ways of solving these equations are reviewed, each leading to different types of results. Following the analytic approach developed for quarter-plane random walks by Fayolle, Iasnogorodski and Malyshev, a key preliminary step is the analytic continuation of the relevant Laplace transforms onto the complex algebraic curve defined by the zero set of the kernel. Carleman boundary value problem techniques then yield explicit contour-integral representations for the Laplace transforms. In special parameter regimes, Tutte's invariant method provides integral-free formulas and a sharp classification of the transforms according to their algebraic-differential complexity. Singularity analysis combined with saddle-point methods carried out on the kernel algebraic curve, produces precise two-dimensional asymptotics. Finally, in the degenerate setting, the compensation approach provides an alternative constructive method, allowing one to build the densities as an infinite series through explicit iterative corrections.

On the Green's functions and Martin boundary structure of a planar diffusion in a discontinuous layered medium

We consider a two-dimensional diffusion process in a two-layered plane, governed by distinct covariance matrices in the upper and lower half-planes and by two drift vectors pointed away from the $x$-axis. We first analyze the case where the generator of the process is in divergence form, that is, when the flux is continuous across the interface. Then we extend the study to a broader class of processes whose behavior at the interface forms an oblique two-dimensional analogue of the skew Brownian motion. We provide a detailed theoretical analysis of this transient process. Our main results are as follows: (i) we derive explicit Laplace transforms of the Green's functions; (ii) we compute exact asymptotics of the Green's functions along all possible trajectories in the plane; (iii) We determine all positive harmonic functions, identifying the full and minimal Martin boundaries, which turn out to be distinct. The nonminimality of the Martin boundary is a noteworthy phenomenon for diffusions with regular coefficients. To obtain an analytical description of the process, we fully develop a three-variable version of the so-called kernel method by deriving and exploiting a functional equation involving unknown Laplace transforms of Green's functions and two known kernels $\gamma_+(x,y)$ and $\gamma_{-}(x,z)$. The introduction of independent auxiliary variables $y$ and $z$, associated with each half-plane, is a key idea.

Degenerate systems of three Brownian particles with asymmetric collisions: invariant measure of gaps

We consider a degenerate system of three Brownian particles undergoing asymmetric collisions. We study the gap process of this system and focus on its invariant measure. The gap process is described as an obliquely reflected degenerate Brownian motion in a quadrant. For all possible parameter cases, we compute the Laplace transform of the invariant measure, and fully characterize the conditions under which it belongs to the following classes: rational, algebraic, differentially finite, or differentially algebraic. We also derive explicit formulas for the invariant measure on the boundary of the quadrant, expressed in terms of a Theta-like function, to which we apply a polynomial differential operator. In this study, we introduce a new parameter called $\gamma$ (along with two additional parameters $\gamma_1$ and $\gamma_2$) which governs many properties of the degenerate process. This parameter is reminiscent of the famous parameter $\alpha$ introduced by Varadhan and Williams (and the two parameters $\alpha_1$ and $\alpha_2$ recently introduced by Bousquet-M{\'e}lou et al.) to study nondegenerate reflected Brownian motion in a wedge. To establish our main results we start from a kernel functional equation characterizing the Laplace transform of the invariant measure. By an analytic approach, we establish a finite difference equation satisfied by the Laplace transform. Then, using certain so-called decoupling functions, we apply Tutte's invariant approach to solve the equation via conformal gluing functions. Finally, difference Galois theory and exhaustive study allows us to find necessary and sufficient conditions for the Laplace transform to belong to the specified function hierarchy.

Martin boundary of a space-time Brownian motion with drift killed at the boundary of a moving cone

We study a space-time Brownian motion with drift B(t)=(t_0+t,y_0+W(t)+t) killed at the moving boundary of the cone {(t,x):0<x<t}. This article determines the parabolic Martin boundary and all harmonic functions associated with this process. To that end, the asymptotics of Green's functions are determined along all directions. We also find the exit probabilities at the edges, the probability of remaining in the cone forever and the laws of the exit point and exit time. From this, we derive an explicit formula for the transition kernel of the process. These results arise from two different methods initially introduced to study random walks. An analytical approach, developed in the 1970s by Malyshev and based on the steepest descent method on a Riemann surface, is used to determine the asymptotics of the Green's functions. A recursive compensation approach, inspired by the method developed in the 1990s by Adan, Wessels and Zijm, is used to determine the harmonic functions.

Reflected Brownian Motion in a wedge: sum-of-exponential absorption probability at the vertex and differential properties

We study a Brownian motion with drift in a wedge of angle $\beta$ which is obliquely reflected on each edge along angles $\varepsilon$ and $\delta$. We assume that the classical parameter $\alpha=\frac{\delta+\varepsilon - \pi}{\beta}$ is greater than $1$ and we focus on transient cases where the process can either be absorbed at the vertex or escape to infinity. We show that $\alpha\in\mathbb{N}^*$ is a necessary and sufficient condition for the absorption probability, seen as a function of the starting point, to be written as a finite sum of terms of exponential product form. In such cases, we give expressions for the absorption probability and its Laplace transform. When $\alpha\in\mathbb{Z}+\frac{\pi}{\beta}\mathbb{Z}$ we find explicit D-algebraic expression for the Laplace transform. Our results rely on Tutte's invariant method and on a recursive compensation approach.

Invariant measure of gaps in degenerate competing three-particle systems

We study the gap processes in a degenerate system of three particles interacting through their ranks. We obtain the Laplace transform of the invariant measure of these gaps, and an explicit expression for the corresponding invariant density. To derive these results, we start from the basic adjoint relationship characterizing the invariant measure, and apply a combination of two approaches: first, the invariance methodology of W. Tutte, thanks to which we compute the Laplace transform in closed form; second, a recursive compensation approach which leads to the density of the invariant measure as an infinite convolution of exponential functions. As in the case of Brownian motion with reflection or killing at the endpoints of an interval, certain Jacobi theta functions play a crucial role in our computations.

Asymptotics for the Green's functions of a transient reflected Brownian motion in a wedge

We consider a transient Brownian motion reflected obliquely in a two-dimensional wedge. A precise asymptotic expansion of Green's functions is found in all directions. To this end, we first determine a kernel functional equation connecting the Laplace transforms of the Green's functions. We then extend the Laplace transforms analytically and study its singularities. We obtain the asymptotics applying the saddle point method to the inverse Laplace transform on the Riemann surface generated by the kernel.

A dual skew symmetry for transient reflected Brownian motion in an orthant

We introduce a transient reflected Brownian motion in a multidimensional orthant, which is either absorbed at the apex of the cone or escapes to infinity. We address the question of computing the absorption probability, as a function of the starting point of the process. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the absorption probability to admit an exponential product form, namely, that the determinant of the reflection matrix is zero. We call this condition a dual skew symmetry. It recalls the famous skew symmetry introduced by Harrison, which characterizes the exponential stationary distributions in the recurrent case. The duality comes from that the partial differential equation satisfied by the absorption probability is dual to the one associated with the stationary distribution in the recurrent case.

Stationary Brownian motion in a 3/4-plane: Reduction to a Riemann-Hilbert problem via Fourier transforms

The stationary reflected Brownian motion in a three-quarter plane has been rarely analyzed in the probabilistic literature, in comparison with the quarter plane analogue model. In this context, our main result is to prove that the stationary distribution can indeed be found by solving a boundary value problem of the same kind as the one encountered in the quarter plane, up to various dualities and symmetries. The main idea is to start from Fourier (and not Laplace) transforms, allowing to get a functional equation for a single function of two complex variables.

On the stationary distribution of reflected Brownian motion in a non-convex wedge

We study the stationary reflected Brownian motion in a non-convex wedge, which, compared to its convex analogue model, has been much rarely analyzed in the probabilistic literature. We prove that its stationary distribution can be found by solving a two dimensional vector boundary value problem (BVP) on a single curve for the associated Laplace transforms. The reduction to this kind of vector BVP seems to be new in the literature. As a matter of comparison, one single boundary condition is sufficient in the convex case. When the parameters of the model (drift, reflection angles and covariance matrix) are symmetric with respect to the bisector line of the cone, the model is reducible to a standard reflected Brownian motion in a convex cone. Finally, we construct a one-parameter family of distributions, which surprisingly provides, for any wedge (convex or not), one particular example of stationary distribution of a reflected Brownian motion.

Escape and absorption probabilities for obliquely reflected Brownian motion in a quadrant

We consider an obliquely reflected Brownian motion $Z$ with positive drift in a quadrant stopped at time $T$, where $T:=\inf \{ t>0 : Z(t)=(0,0) \}$ is the first hitting time of the origin. Such a process can be defined even in the non-standard case where the reflection matrix is not completely-$\mathcal{S}$. We show that in this case the process has two possible behaviors: either it tends to infinity or it hits the corner (origin) in a finite time. Given an arbitrary starting point $(u,v)$ in the quadrant, we consider the escape (resp. absorption) probabilities $\mathbb{P}_{(u,v)}[T=\infty]$ (resp. $\mathbb{P}_{(u,v)}[T<\infty]$). We establish the partial differential equations and the oblique Neumann boundary conditions which characterize the escape probability and provide a functional equation satisfied by the Laplace transform of the escape probability. We then give asymptotics for the absorption probability in the simpler case where the starting point in the quadrant is $(u,0)$. We exhibit a remarkable geometric condition on the parameters which characterizes the case where the absorption probability has a product form and is exponential. We call this new criterion the dual skew symmetry condition due to its natural connection with the skew symmetry condition for the stationary distribution. We then obtain an explicit integral expression for the Laplace transform of the escape probability. We conclude by presenting exact asymptotics for the escape probability at the origin.

Probability of total domination for transient reflecting processes in a quadrant

We consider two-dimensional L\'evy processes reflected to stay in the positive quadrant. Our focus is on the non-standard regime when the mean of the free process is negative but the reflection vectors point away from the origin, so that the reflected process escapes to infinity along one of the axes. Under rather general conditions, it is shown that such behaviour is certain and each component can dominate the other with positive probability for any given starting position. Additionally, we establish the corresponding invariance principle providing justification for the use of the reflected Brownian motion as an approximate model. Focusing on the probability that the first component dominates, we derive a kernel equation for the respective Laplace transform in the starting position. This is done for the compound Poisson model with negative exponential jumps and, by means of approximation, for the Brownian model. Both equations are solved via boundary value problem analysis, which also yields the domination probability when starting at the origin. Finally, certain asymptotic analysis and numerical results are presented.

Integral expression for the stationary distribution of reflected brownian motion in a wedge

For Brownian motion in a (two-dimensional) wedge with negative drift and oblique reflection on the axes, we derive an explicit formula for the Laplace transform of its stationary distribution (when it exists), in terms of Cauchy integrals and generalized Chebyshev polyno-mials. To that purpose we solve a Carleman-type boundary value problem on a hyperbola, satisfied by the Laplace transforms of the boundary stationary distribution.

Asymptotic behavior of the occupancy density for obliquely reflected Brownian motion in a half-plane and Martin boundary

Let $\pi$ be the occupancy density of an obliquely reflected Brownian motion in the half plane and let ($\rho$, $\alpha$) be the polar coordinates of a point in the upper half plane. This work determines the exact asymptotic behavior of $\pi$($\rho$, $\alpha$) as $\rho$ $\rightarrow$ $\infty$ with $\alpha$ $\in$ (0, $\pi$). We find explicit functions a, b, c such that $\pi$($\rho$, $\alpha$) $\sim$ $\rho$$\rightarrow$$\infty$ a($\alpha$)$\rho$ b($\alpha$) e --c($\alpha$)$\rho$. This closes an open problem first stated by Professor J. Michael Harrison in August 2013. We also compute the exact asymptotics for the tail distribution of the boundary occupancy measure and we obtain an explicit integral expression for $\pi$. We conclude by finding the Martin boundary of the process and giving all of the corresponding harmonic functions satisfying an oblique Neumann boundary problem.

Green's Functions with Oblique Neumann Boundary Conditions in the Quadrant

We study semi-martingale obliquely reflected Brownian motion with drift in the first quadrant of the plane in the transient case. Our main result determines a general explicit integral expression for the moment generating function of Green's functions of this process. To that purpose we establish a new kernel functional equation connecting moment generating functions of Green's functions inside the quadrant and on its edges. This is reminiscent of the recurrent case where a functional equation derives from the basic adjoint relationship which characterizes the stationary distribution. This equation leads us to a non-homogeneous Carleman boundary value problem. Its resolution provides a formula for the moment generating function in terms of contour integrals and a conformal mapping.

Tutte's invariant approach for Brownian motion reflected in the quadrant

We consider a Brownian motion with drift in the quarter plane with orthogonal reflection on the axes. The Laplace transform of its stationary distribution satisfies a functional equation, which is reminiscent from equations arising in the enumeration of (discrete) quadrant walks. We develop a Tutte's invariant approach to this continuous setting, and we obtain an explicit formula for the Laplace transform in terms of generalized Chebyshev polynomials.

Asymptotic expansion of stationary distribution for reflected Brownian motion in the quarter plane via analytic approach

Brownian motion in R 2 + with covariance matrix $Σ$ and drift $μ$ in the interior and reflection matrix R from the axes is considered. The asymptotic expansion of the stationary distribution density along all paths in R 2 + is found and its main term is identified depending on parameters ($Σ$, $μ$, R). For this purpose the analytic approach of Fayolle, Iasnogorodski and Malyshev in [12] and [36], restricted essentially up to now to discrete random walks in Z 2 + with jumps to the nearest-neighbors in the interior is developed in this article for diffusion processes on R 2 + with reflections on the axes.

Analytic approach for reflected Brownian motion in the quadrant

Random walks in the quarter plane are an important object both of combinatorics and probability theory. Of particular interest for their study, there is an analytic approach initiated by Fayolle, Iasnogorodski and Malyshev, and further developed by the last two authors of this note. The outcomes of this method are explicit expressions for the generating functions of interest, asymptotic analysis of their coefficients, etc. Although there is an important literature on reflected Brownian motion in the quarter plane (the continuous counterpart of quadrant random walks), an analogue of the analytic approach has not been fully developed to that context. The aim of this note is twofold: it is first an extended abstract of two recent articles of the authors of this paper, which propose such an approach; we further compare various aspects of the discrete and continuous analytic approaches.
