Quantum diffusion and thermalization at resonant tunneling

Nonequilibrium dynamics and effective thermalization are studied in a resonant tunneling scenario via multilevel Landau-Zener crossings. Our realistic many-body system, composed of two energy bands, naturally allows a separation of degrees of freedom. This gives access to an effective temperature and single- and two-body observables to characterize the delocalization of eigenstates and the nonequilibrium dynamics of our paradigmatic complex quantum system.

Resonant driving of a nonlinear Hamiltonian system

As a proof of principle, we show how a classical nonlinear Hamiltonian system can be driven resonantly over reasonably long times by appropriately shaped pulses. To keep the parameter space reasonably small, we limit ourselves to a driving force which consists of periodic pulses additionally modulated by a sinusoidal function. The main observables are the average increase of kinetic energy and of the action variable (of the non-driven system) with time. Applications of our scheme aim for driving high frequencies of a nonlinear system with a fixed modulation signal.

Bosonic transport through a chain of quantum dots

The particle transport through a chain of quantum dots coupled to two bosonic reservoirs is studied. For the case of reservoirs of non-interacting bosonic particles, we derive an exact set of stochastic differential equations, whose memory kernels and driving noise are characterised entirely by the properties of the reservoirs. Going to the Markovian limit an analytically solvable case is presented. The effect of interparticle interactions on the transient behaviour of the system, when both reservoirs are instantaneously coupled to an empty chain of quantum dots, is approximated by a semiclassical method, known as the Truncated Wigner approximation. The steady-state particle flow through the chain and the mean particle occupations are explained via the spectral properties of the interacting system.

Decay and fragmentation in an open Bose-Hubbard chain

We analyze the decay of ultracold atoms from an optical lattice with loss form a single lattice site. If the initial state is dynamically stable a suitable amount of dissipation can stabilize a Bose-Einstein condensate, such that it remains coherent even in the presence of strong interactions. A transition between two different dynamical phases is observed if the initial state is dynamically unstable. This transition is analyzed here in detail. For strong interactions, the system relaxes to an entangled quantum state with remarkable statistical properties: The atoms bunch in a few "breathers" forming at random positions. Breathers at different positions are coherent, such that they can be used in precision quantum interferometry and other applications.

A two-band Bose-Hubbard model for many-body resonant tunneling in the Wannier-Stark system

We study an experimentally realizable paradigm of complex many-body quantum systems, a two-band Wannier-Stark model, for which diffusion in Hilbert space as well as many-body Landau-Zener processes can be engineered. A cross-over between regular to quantum chaotic spectra is found within the many-body avoided crossings at resonant tunneling conditions. The spectral properties are shown to determine the evolution of states across a cascade of Landau-Zener events. We apply the obtained spectral information to study the non-equilibrium dynamics of our many-body system in different parameter regimes.

Quantum reflection from an oscillating surface

We describe an experimentally realistic situation of the quantum reflection of helium atoms from an oscillating surface. The temporal modulation of the potential induces clear sidebands in the reflection probability as a function of momentum. Theses sidebands could be exploited to slow down atoms and molecules in the experiment.

Landau-Zener transitions in the presence of harmonic noise

We study the influence of off-diagonal harmonic noise on transitions in a Landau-Zener model. We demonstrate that the harmonic noise can change the transition probabilities substantially and that its impact depends strongly on the characteristic frequency of the noise. In the underdamped regime of the noise process, its effect is compared with the one of a deterministic sinusoidally oscillating function. While altering the properties of the noise process allows one to engineer the transitions probabilities, driving the system with a deterministic sinusoidal function can result in larger and more controlled changes of the transition probability. This may be relevant for realistic implementations of our model with Bose-Einstein condensates in noise-driven optical lattices.

Scale-free relaxation of a wave packet in a quantum well with power-law tails

We propose a setup for which a power-law decay is predicted to be observable for generic and realistic conditions. The system we study is very simple: A quantum wave packet initially prepared in a potential well with (i) tails asymptotically decaying like ~ x^{-2} and (ii) an eigenvalues spectrum that shows a continuous part attached to the ground or equilibrium state. We analytically derive the asymptotic decay law from the spectral properties for generic, confined initial states. Our findings are supported by realistic numerical simulations for state-of-the-art expansion experiments with cold atoms.

Noise assisted transport in the Wannier-Stark system

We investigated how the presence of an additional lattice potential, driven by a harmonic noise process, changes the transition rate from the ground band to the first excited band in a Wannier-Stark system. Alongside numerical simulations, we present two models that capture the essential features of the dynamics. The first model uses a noise-driven Landau-Zener approximation and describes the short time evolution of the full system very well. The second model assumes that the noise process' correlation time is much larger than the internal timescale of the system, yet it allows for good estimates of the observed transition rates and gives a simple interpretation of the dynamics. One of the central results is that we obtain a way to control the interband transitions with the help of the second lattice. This could readily be realized in state-of-the-art experiments using either Bose-Einstein condensates or optical pulses in engineered potentials.

Fidelity for kicked atoms with gravity near a quantum resonance

Kicked atoms under a constant Stark or gravity field are investigated for experimental setups with cold and ultra cold atoms. The parametric stability of the quantum dynamics is studied using the fidelity. In the case of a quantum resonance, it is shown that the behavior of the fidelity depends on arithmetic properties of the gravity parameter. Close to a quantum resonance, the long time asymptotics of the fidelity is studied by means of a {\em pseudo-classical} approximation first introduced by Fishman {\em et al.} [J. Stat. Phys. {\bf 110}, 911 (2003)]. The long-time decay of fidelity arises from the tunneling out of pseudo-classical stable islands, and a simple ansatz is proposed which satisfactorily reproduces the main features observed in numerical simulations.

Energetically constrained co-tunneling of cold atoms

We study under-barrier tunneling for a pair of energetically bound bosonic atoms in an optical lattice with a barrier. We identify conditions under which this exotic molecule tunnels as a point particle with the coordinate given by the bound pair center of mass and discuss the atomic co-tunneling beyond this regime. In particular, we quantitatively analyze resonantly enhanced co-tunneling, where two interacting atoms penetrate the barrier with higher probability than a single atom.

Engineering interband transport by time-dependent disorder

We show how the evolution of atoms in a tilted lattice can be changed and controlled by phase noise on the lattice. Dependent on the characteristic parameters of the noise, the interband transport can either be suppressed or enhanced, which is of interest for high precision control in experimental realization with Bose-Einstein condensates. The effect of the noise on the survival probability in the ground band is summarized in a scaling plot stressing the universality of our results.

Induced Delocalization by Correlation and Interaction in the one-dimensional Anderson Model

We consider long-range correlated disorder and mutual interacting particles according to a dipole-dipole coupling as modifications to the one-dimensional Anderson model. Technically we rely on the (numerical) exact diagonalization of the system's Hamilitonian. From the perspective of different localization measures we confirm and extend the picture of the emergence of delocalized states with increasing correlations. Beside these studies a definition for multi-particle localization is proposed. In the case of two interacting bosons we observe a sensitivity of localization with respect to the range of the particle-particle interaction and insensitivity to the coupling's sign, which should stimulate new theoretical approaches and experimental investigations with e.g. dipolar cold quantum gases. This revised manuscript is much more explicit compared to the initial version of the paper. Major extensions have been applied to Sects. II and III where we updated and added figures and we more extensively compared our results to the literature. Furthermore, Sect. III additionally contains a phenomenological line of reasoning that bridges from delocalization by correlation to delocalization by interaction on the basis of the multi-particle Hamilton matrix.

Fidelity of the near resonant quantum kicked rotor

We present a perturbative result for the temporal evolution of the fidelity of the quantum kicked rotor, i.e. the overlap of the same initial state evolved with two slightly different kicking strengths, for kicking periods close to a principal quantum resonance. Based on a pendulum approximation we describe the fidelity for rotational orbits in the pseudo-classical phase space of a corresponding classical map. Our results are compared to numerical simulations indicating the range of applicability of our analytical approximation.

Tunneling of ultracold atoms in time-independent potentials

We present theoretical as well as experimental results on resonantly enhanced quantum tunneling of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices both in the linear case of single particle dynamics and in the presence of atom-atom interactions. Our results demonstrate the usefulness of condensates in optical lattices for the dynamical control of tunneling and for simulating Hamiltonians originally used for describing solid state phenomena.

Detection of avoided crossings by fidelity

The fidelity, defined as overlap of eigenstates of two slightly different Hamiltonians, is proposed as an efficient detector of avoided c rossings in the energy spectrum. This new application of fidelity is motivated for model systems, and its value for analyzing complex qua ntum spectra is underlined by applying it to a random matrix model and a tilted Bose-Hubbard system.

Engineering of Landau-Zener tunneling

Several ways are discussed how to control the Landau-Zener tunneling in the Wannier-Stark system. We focus on a realization of this system with interacting and noninteracting ultracold bosons. The tunneling from the ground band to the continuum is shown to depend crucially on the initial condition and system parameters and, more interestingly, on added timedependent disorder -- noise -- on the lattice beams.
