Polarization-entangled photon-pair source obtained via type-II non-collinear SPDC process with PPKTP crystal

We demonstrate a polarization-entangled photon-pair source obtained via a type-II non-collinear quasi-phase-matched spontaneous parametric down-conversion process with a 10-mm periodically poled KTiOPO$_4$ crystal, which is as stable and wavelength-tunable as the well-known Sagnac configuration scheme. A brightness of 4.2 kHz/mW is detected and a concurrence of 0.975 is estimated using quantum state tomography. Without loss of entanglement and brightness, the photon-pair wavelengths are tunable through control of the crystal temperature. This improvement is achieved using the non-collinear configuration and a stable interferometric distinguishability compensator.

Equal-fidelity surface for a qubit state via equal-distance extended Bloch vectors and derivatives

We describe and characterize an equal-fidelity surface in Bloch space targeted for a qubit state by means of equal-distance concept. The distance is generalized and defined as the Euclidean distance between extended Bloch vectors for arbitrary dimensional states. The distance is a genuine distance according to the definition and is related to other distances between quantum states and super-fidelity.

Highly efficient source for frequency-entangled photon pairs generated in a 3rd order periodically poled MgO-doped stoichiometric LiTaO3 crystal

We present a highly efficient source for discrete frequency-entangled photon pairs based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion using 3rd order type-0 quasi-phase matching in a periodically poled MgO-doped stoichiometric LiTaO3 crystal pumped by a 355.66 nm laser. Correlated two-photon states were generated with automatic conservation of energy and momentum in two given spatial modes. These states have a wide spectral range, even under small variations in crystal temperature, which consequently results in higher discreteness. Frequency entanglement was confirmed by measuring two-photon quantum interference fringes without any spectral filtering.

Generalized quantum interference of correlated photon pairs

Superposition and indistinguishablility between probability amplitudes have played an essential role in observing quantum interference effects of correlated photons. The Hong-Ou-Mandel interference and interferences of the path-entangled photon number state are of special interest in the field of quantum information technologies. However, a fully generalized two-photon quantum interferometric scheme accounting for the Hong-Ou-Mandel scheme and path-entangled photon number states has not yet been proposed. Here we report the experimental demonstrations of the generalized two-photon interferometry with both the interferometric properties of the Hong-Ou-Mandel effect and the fully unfolded version of the path-entangled photon number state using photon-pair sources, which are independently generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion. Our experimental scheme explains two-photon interference fringes revealing single- and two-photon coherence properties in a single interferometer setup. Using the proposed interferometric measurement, it is possible to directly estimate the joint spectral intensity of a photon pair source.

Experimental demonstration of error-insensitive approximate universal-NOT gates

We propose and experimentally demonstrate an approximate universal-NOT (U-NOT) operation that is robust against operational errors. In our proposal, the U-NOT operation is composed of stochastic unitary operations represented by the vertices of regular polyhedrons. The operation is designed to be robust against random operational errors by increasing the number of unitary operations (i.e., reference axes). Remarkably, no increase in the total number of measurements nor additional resources are required to perform the U-NOT operation. Our method can be applied in general to reduce operational errors to an arbitrary degree of precision when approximating any anti-unitary operation in a stochastic manner.

The New Horizon Run Cosmological N-Body Simulations

We present two large cosmological N-body simulations, called Horizon Run 2 (HR2) and Horizon Run 3 (HR3), made using 6000^3 = 216 billions and 7210^3 = 374 billion particles, spanning a volume of (7.200 Gpc/h)^3 and (10.815 Gpc/h)^3, respectively. These simulations improve on our previous Horizon Run 1 (HR1) up to a factor of 4.4 in volume, and range from 2600 to over 8800 times the volume of the Millennium Run. In addition, they achieve a considerably finer mass resolution, down to 1.25x10^11 M_sun/h, allowing to resolve galaxy-size halos with mean particle separations of 1.2 Mpc/h and 1.5 Mpc/h, respectively. We have measured the power spectrum, correlation function, mass function and basic halo properties with percent level accuracy, and verified that they correctly reproduce the LCDM theoretical expectations, in excellent agreement with linear perturbation theory. Our unprecedentedly large-volume N-body simulations can be used for a variety of studies in cosmology and astrophysics, ranging from large-scale structure topology, baryon acoustic oscillations, dark energy and the characterization of the expansion history of the Universe, till galaxy formation science - in connection with the new SDSS-III. To this end, we made a total of 35 all-sky mock surveys along the past light cone out to z=0.7 (8 from the HR2 and 27 from the HR3), to simulate the BOSS geometry. The simulations and mock surveys are already publicly available at http://astro.kias.re.kr/Horizon-Run23/.

Experimental Realization of a Four-Photon Seven-Qubit Graph State for One-Way Quantum Computation

We propose and demonstrate the scaling up of photonic graph state through path qubit fusion. Two path qubits from separate two-photon four-qubit states are fused to generate a two-dimensional seven-qubit graph state composed of polarization and path qubits. Genuine seven-qubit entanglement is verified by evaluating the witness operator. Six qubits from the graph state are used to execute the general two-qubit Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm with a success probability greater than 90%.

Observation of Young's Double-Slit Interference with the Three-Photon N00N State

Spatial interference of quantum mechanical particles exhibits a fundamental feature of quantum mechanics. A two-mode entangled state of N particles known as N00N state can give rise to non-classical interference. We report the first experimental observation of a three-photon N00N state exhibiting Young's double-slit type spatial quantum interference. Compared to a single-photon state, the three-photon entangled state generates interference fringes that are three times denser. Moreover, its interference visibility of $0.49 \pm 0.09$ is well above the limit of 0.1 for spatial super-resolution of classical origin. The demonstration of spatial quantum interference by a N00N state composed of more than two photons represents an important step towards applying quantum entanglement to technologies such as lithography and imaging.

Proposal for Direct, Local Measurement of Entanglement for Pure Bipartite Systems of Arbitrary Dimension

Based on the complementarity relation between entanglement of a composite system and the purity of a subsystem, we propose a simple method to measure the amount of entanglement. The method can be applied to a bipartite system in a pure state of any arbitrary dimension. It requires only single qudit rotations and straightforward probability measurements performed on one of the subsystems, and can thus be easily implemented experimentally using linear optical devices.

Proposal for direct measurement of concurrence via visibility in a cavity QED system

An experimental scheme is proposed that allows direct measurement of the concurrence of a two-qubit cavity system. It is based on the cavity-QED technology using atoms as flying qubits and relies on the identity of the two-particle visibility of the atomic probability with the concurrence of the cavity system. The scheme works for any arbitrary pure initial state of the two-qubit cavity system.

Scalable cavity-QED-based scheme of generating entanglement of atoms and of cavity fields

We propose a cavity-QED-based scheme of generating entanglement between atoms. The scheme is scalable to an arbitrary number of atoms, and can be used to generate a variety of multipartite entangled states such as the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger, W, and cluster states. Furthermore, with a role switching of atoms with photons, the scheme can be used to generate entanglement between cavity fields. We also introduce a scheme that can generate an arbitrary multipartite field graph state.

Parker Instability in a Self-Gravitating Magnetized Gas Disk: I. Linear Stability Analysis

To be a formation mechanism of such large-scale structures as giant molecular clouds (GMCs) and HI superclouds, the classical Parker instability driven by external gravity has to overcome three major obstacles: The convective motion accompanying the instability generates thin sheets than large condensations. The degree of density enhancement achieved by the instability is too low to make dense interstellar clouds. The time and the length scales of the instability are significantly longer and larger than the estimated formation time and the observed mean separation of the GMCs, respectively. This paper examines whether a replacement of the driving agent from the external to the self gravity might remove these obstacles by activating the gravitational instability in the Galactic ISM disk. The self gravity can suppress the convective motions, and a cooperative action of the Jeans and the Parker instabilities can remove all the obstacles confronting the classical version of the Parker instability. The mass and mean separation of the structures resulting from the odd-parity undular mode solution are shown to agree better with the HI superclouds than with the GMCs. We briefly discuss how inclusions of the external gravity and cosmic rays would modify behaviors of the odd-parity undular mode solution.

Instabilities in a Self-Gravitating Magnetized Gas Disk

A linear stability analysis has been performed onto a self-gravitating magnetized gas disk bounded by external pressure. The resulting dispersion relation is fully explained by three kinds of instability: a Parker-type instability driven by self-gravity, usual Jeans gravitational instability and convection. In the direction parallel to the magnetic fields, the magnetic tension completely suppresses the convection. If the adiabatic index $γ$ is less than a certain critical value, the perturbations trigger the Parker as well as the Jeans instability in the disk. Consequently, the growth rate curve has two maxima: one at small wavenumber due to a combination of the Parker and Jeans instabilities, and the other at somewhat larger wavenumber mostly due to the Parker instability. In the horizontal direction perpendicular to the fields, the convection makes the growth rate increase monotonically upto a limiting value as the perturbation wavenumber gets large. However, at small wavenumbers, the Jeans instability becomes effective and develops a peak in the growth rate curve. Depending on the system parameters, the maximum growth rate of the convection may or may not be higher than the peak due to the Jeans-Parker instability. Therefore, a cooperative action of the Jeans and Parker instabilities can have chances to over-ride the convection and may develop large scale structures of cylindrical shape in non-linear stage. In thick disks the cylinder is expected to align its axis perpendicular to the field, while in thin ones parallel to it.
