Dyon Production from Near-Extremal Kerr-Newman-(Anti-)de Sitter Black Holes

Using the enhanced symmetry in the near-horizon region of the near-extremal dyonic Kerr-Newman (KN) black hole in the (A)dS space, we find the exact solutions for dyonic charged scalar field in terms of the hypergeometric function and explicitly compute the Schwinger effect for the emission of electric and/or magnetic charges. The emission formula confirms a universal factorization of the Schwinger formula in the AdS$_2$ and another Schwinger formula in the two-dimensional Rindler space determined by the effective temperature and the Hawking temperature with the chemical potentials of electric and/or magnetic charges and the angular momentum. The emission of the same species of charges from the KN black hole is enhanced in the AdS boundary while it is suppressed in the dS boundary. In addition, the dragging of particles in the KN black hole diminishes the emission of charges in both AdS and dS spaces. The AdS geometry of near-horizon gives the Breitenloher-Freedman (BF) bound, within which the stability of dyonic KN black holes is guaranteed against both the emission of charges and Hawking radiation.

Generalized Gelfand-Dikii equation for fermionic Schwinger pair production

Schwinger pair creation in a purely time-dependent electric field can be reduced to an effective quantum mechanical problem using a variety of formalisms. Here we develop an approach based on the Gelfand-Dikii equation for scalar QED, and on a generalization of that equation for spinor QED. We discuss a number of solvable special cases from this point of view. In previous work, two of the authors had shown for the scalar case how to use the well-known solitonic solutions of the KdV equation to construct Pöschl-Teller like electric fields that do not pair create at some fixed but arbitrary momentum. Here, we present numerical evidence that this construction can be adapted to the fermionic case by a mere change of parameters.

Merger rate of charged black holes from the two-body dynamical capture

We consider the two-body dynamical capture of black holes carrying U(1) charge which can not only correspond to electric or magnetic charge but also have other physical interpretations such as dark or hidden charge. In the low-velocity and weak-field regime, we study gravitational and electromagnetic radiations from point masses with U(1) charges in a hyperbolic orbit, and we develop a formalism to derive the merger rate of charged black holes from the two-body dynamical capture. We apply the formalism to find the effects of the charge-to-mass ratio on the merger rate for possible different cases and discover that the effects depend on the models.

Vacuum Birefringence in a Supercritical Magnetic Field and a Subcritical Electric Field

Recent ultra-intense lasers of subcritical fields and proposed observations of the x-rays polarization from highly magnetized neutron stars of supercritical fields have attracted attention to vacuum birefringence, a unique feature of nonlinear electrodynamics. We propose a formulation of vacuum birefringence that incorporates the effects of the weaker electric field added to the extremely strong magnetic field. To do so, we first derive a closed analytical expression for the one-loop effective Lagrangian for the combined magnetic and electric fields by using an explicit formula of the one-loop effective Lagrangian for an arbitrarily strong magnetic field. We then employ the expression to derive the polarization and magnetization of the vacuum, from which the permittivity and permeability for weak probe fields are obtained. Finally, we find the refractive indices and the associated polarization vectors for the case of parallel magnetic and electric fields. The proposed formulation predicts that an electric field along the magnetic field reduces the birefringence and rotates the polarization vectors. Such effects should be taken into account for accurate polarimetry of the x-rays from magnetized neutron stars, which will prove the fundamental aspect of the strong field quantum electrodynamics (QED) and explore the extreme fields of astrophysical bodies.

Magnetars as Laboratories for Strong Field QED

A strong electromagnetic field polarizes the vacuum and in the presence of an electric field creates pairs of a charged particle and its anti-particle. Magnetars, highly magnetized neutron stars with magnetic field comparable to or greater than the Schwinger field, give a significant amount of the vacuum polarization and vacuum birefringence and the induced electric field can create the electron-positron pairs, which are strong field quantum electrodynamics (QED) processes. In this paper, we use a closed formula for the one-loop effective action in the presence of a supercritical magnetic field and a subcritical electric field, find the vacuum birefringence analytically and numerically, and then discuss possible measurements in magnetars.

Gravitational and electromagnetic radiation from binary black holes with electric and magnetic charges: Elliptical orbits on a cone

Extending the electromagnetic and gravitational radiations from binary black holes with electric and magnetic charges in circular orbits in Phys. Rev. D {\bf 102}, 103520 (2020), we calculate the total emission rates of energy and angular momentum due to gravitational and electromagnetic radiations from dyonic binary black holes in precessing elliptical orbits. It is shown that the emission rates of energy and angular momentum due to gravitational and electromagnetic radiations have the same dependence on the conic angle for different orbits. Moreover, we obtain the evolutions of orbits and find that a circular orbit remains circular while an elliptic orbit becomes quasi-circular due to electromagnetic and gravitational radiations. Using the evolution of orbits, we derive the waveform models for dyonic binary black hole inspirals and show the amplitudes of the gravitational waves for dyonic binary black hole inspirals differ from those for Schwarzschild binary black hole inspirals, which can be used to test electric and magnetic charges of black holes.

Phase-Integral Formulation of Dynamically Assisted Schwinger Pair Production

We present a phase-integral formulation of dynamically assisted Schwinger pair production of scalar charges to find the pair production density under a strong low-frequency field and a weak high-frequency field. The leading WKB action was the Schwinger formula determined by the constant field, whose corrections are determined by the Keldysh parameter for the oscillating field, $mω_{q}/qE_{q}$. We found a systematic expression of the leading WKB action as a power series in the Keldysh parameter, of which coefficients are given as integrals of the product of fields in the complex time domain. For the case of a strong constant field superimposed with a weak oscillating field, we provided explicit formulas and proposed a procedure for numerical evaluation. The presented phase-integral formulation should provide a clear simple method for quantitatively analyzing the leading-order features of dynamically assisted Schwinger pair production.

Gravitational and electromagnetic radiation from binary black holes with electric and magnetic charges: Circular orbits on a cone

We derive the equations of motion of dyonic black hole binaries with electric and magnetic charges and explore features of static orbits. By using a Newtonian method with the inclusion of radiation reaction, we calculate the total emission rate of energy and angular momentum due to gravitational radiation and electromagnetic radiation for circular orbits. Moreover, we obtain the evolutions of orbits and calculate merger times of dyonic binaries. We show that electric and magnetic charges significantly suppress the merger times of dyonic binaries. Our results provide rich information about dyonic binaries and can be used to test black holes with magnetic charges.

Merger rate distribution of primordial black hole binaries with electric charges

We consider gravitational radiation and electromagnetic radiation from point mass binary with electric charges in a Keplerian orbit, and calculate the merger rate distribution of primordial black hole binaries with charges and a general mass function by taking into account gravitational torque and electromagnetic torque by the nearest primordial black hole. We apply the formalism to the extremal charged case and find that $α=-(m_i+m_j)^2\partial^2 \ln {\cal R}(m_i,m_j)/\partial m_i \partial m_j=12/11$, which is independent of the mass function.

Schwinger Effect from Near-extremal Black Holes in (A)dS Space

We study the Schwinger effect in near-extremal Reissner-Nordström (RN) black holes with electric and/or magnetic charges in the (Anti-) de Sitter (AdS) space. The formula for the Schwinger effect takes a universal form for near-extremal black holes with the near-horizon geometry of ${\rm AdS}_2 \times S^2$ and with the proper radii for the ${\rm AdS}_2$ space and the two-sphere $S^2$, regardless of the asymptotically flat or (A)dS space. The asymptotic AdS boundary enhances and the dS boundary suppresses the Schwinger effect and the small radius of the AdS (dS) space reinforces the enhancement and suppression.

Schwinger Effect in Near-extremal Charged Black Holes in High Dimensions

We study the Schwinger effect in near-extremal nonrotating black holes in an arbitrary $D(\geq 4)$-dimensional asymptotically flat and (A)dS space. Using the near-horizon geometry $\mathrm{AdS}_2 \times \mathrm{S}^{D-2}$ of near-extremal black holes with Myers-Perry metric, we find a universal expression of the emission formula for charges that is a multiplication of the Schwinger effects in an $\mathrm{AdS}_2$ space and in a two-dimensional Rindler space. The effective temperature of an accelerated charge for the Schwinger effect is determined by the radii of the effective $\mathrm{AdS}_2$ space and $\mathrm{S}^{D-2}$ as well as the mass, charge, angular momentum of the charge and the radius of the (A)dS space. The Schwinger effect in the asymptotically flat space is more efficient and persistent for a wide range of large black holes for dimensions higher than four. The AdS (dS) boundary enhances (suppresses) the Schwinger effect than the asymptotically flat space. The Schwinger effect persists for a wide range of black holes in the AdS space and has an upper bound in the dS space.

Pair production from Reissner-Nordström-anti-de Sitter black holes

We study the pair production of charged scalar particles from the five-dimensional near extremal Reissner- Nordström-Anti de Sitter (RN-AdS5) black hole. The pair production rate and the absorption cross section ratio in the full spacetime are obtained and are shown to have proportional relation with their counterparts in the near horizon region. In addition, the holographic descriptions of the pair production both in the IR CFT in the near horizon region and the UV CFT at the asymptotic spatial boundary of the RN-AdS5 black hole are analyzed in the AdS2/CFT1and AdS5/CFT4correspondences, respectively. This work gives a complete description of scalar pair production in the near extremal RN-AdS5black hole.

Effect of Schwinger pair production on the evolution of the Hubble constant in de~Sitter spacetime

In this proceeding we consider a massive charged scalar field in a uniform electric field background in a de~Sitter spacetime (dS). We compute the in-vacuum expectation value of the trace of the energy-momentum tensor for the created Schwinger pairs, and using adiabatic subtraction scheme the trace is regularized. The effect of the Schwinger pair creation on the evolution of the Hubble constant is investigated. We find that the production of the semiclassical pairs leads to a decay of the Hubble constant. Whereas, the production of a light scalar field in the weak electric field regime leads to a superacceleration phenomenon.

Astrophysics in Strong Electromagnetic Fields and Laboratory Astrophysics

Recent observations of gravitational waves from binary mergers of black holes or neutron stars and the rapid development of ultra-intense lasers lead strong field physics to a frontier of new physics in the 21st century. Strong gravity phenomena are most precisely described by general relativity, and lasers that are described by another most precisely tested quantum electrodynamics (QED) can be focused into a tiny area in a short period through the chirped pulse amplification and generate extremely high intensity electromagnetic (EM) fields beyond the conventional methods. It is physically interesting to study QED phenomena in curved spacetimes, in which both strong gravitational and electromagnetic fields play important roles. There are many sources for strong gravitational and electromagnetic fields in the sky or universe, such highly magnetized neutron stars, magnetized black holes, and the early universe. We review quantum field theoretical frameworks for QED both in the Minkowski spacetime and curved spacetimes, in particular, charged black holes and the early universe, and discuss the QED physics in strong EM fields, such as the vacuum polarization and Schwinger pair production and their implications to astrophysics and cosmology.

Equivalence between the phase-integral and worldline-instanton methods

The phase-integral and worldline-instanton methods are two widely used methods to calculate Schwinger pair-production densities in electric fields of fixed direction that depend on just one time or space coordinate in the same fixed plane of the electromagnetic field tensor. We show that for charged spinless bosons the leading results of the phase-integral method integrated up through quadratic momenta are equivalent to those of the worldline-instanton method including prefactors. We further apply the phase-integral method to fermion production and time-dependent electric fields parallel to a constant magnetic field.

Charge Emission from Near-Extremal Charged Black Holes

Using the symmetry of the near-horizon geometry and applying quantum field theory of a complex scalar field, we study the spontaneous pair production of charged scalars from near-extremal rotating, electrically and/or magnetically charged black holes. Analytical expressions for pair production, vacuum persistence and absorption cross section are found, and the spectral distribution is given a thermal interpretation. The pair production in near-extremal black holes has a factorization into the Schwinger effect in AdS and Schwinger effect in Rindler space, measuring the deviational from extremality. The associated holographical correspondence is confirmed at the 2-point function level by comparing the absorption cross section ratio as well as the pair production rate both from the gravity and the conformal field theories. The production of monopoles is discussed.

Simulation of Quantum Universe

Quantum simulation provides quantum systems under study with analogous controllable quantum systems and has wide applications from condensed-matter physics to high energy physics and to cosmology. The quantum system of a homogeneous and isotropic field in the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe can be simulated by a charge in an electrically modulated ion trap. The quantum states of these time-dependent oscillators are constructed by quantum invariants. Further, we propose simulation of quantum Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe with a minimal massive scalar field by a charged scalar field in a homogeneous, time-dependent, magnetic field in quantum electrodynamics and investigate the Cauchy problem of how the wave functions evolve.

Unruh effect and Schwinger pair creation under extreme acceleration by ultraintense lasers

A detector undergoing a huge acceleration measures a thermal distribution with the Unruh temperature out of the Minkowski vacuum. Though such huge accelerations occur naturally in astrophysics and gravity, one may design untraintense laser facility to detect the Unruh effect and simulate laboratory astrophysics. We derive the QED vacuum polarization and the vacuum persistence amplitude as well as the Schwinger pair creation in an accelerating frame when a constant electric field exists in the Minkowski spacetime. We advance a thermal interpretation of Schwinger pair creation in the Rindler space.
