Effective Action and Schwinger Pair Production in Scalar QED

Some astrophysical objects are supposed to have very strong electromagnetic fields above the critical strength. Quantum fluctuations due to strong electromagnetic fields modify the Maxwell theory and particularly electric fields make the vacuum unstable against pair production of charged particles. We study the strong field effect such as the effective action and the Schwinger pair production in scalar QED.

Strong Scalar QED in Inhomogeneous Electromagnetic Fields

Strong QED has attracted attention recently partly because many astrophysical phenomena have been observed to involve electromagnetic fields beyond the critical strength for electron-positron pair production and partly because terrestrial experiments will generate electromagnetic fields above or near the critical strength in the near future. In this talk we critically review QED phenomena involving strong external electromagnetic fields. Strong QED is characterized by vacuum polarization due to quantum fluctuations and pair production due to the vacuum instability. A canonical method is elaborated for pair production at zero or finite temperature by inhomogeneous electric fields. An algorithm is advanced to calculate pair production rate for electric fields acting for finite periods of time or localized in space or oscillating electric fields. Finally, strong QED is discussed in astrophysics, in particular, strange stars.

Schwinger Pair Production at Finite Temperature in Scalar QED

In scalar QED we study the Schwinger pair production from an initial ensemble of charged bosons when an electric field is turned on for a finite period together with or without a constant magnetic field. The scalar QED Hamiltonian depends on time through the electric field, which causes the initial ensemble of bosons to evolve out of equilibrium. Using the Liouville-von Neumann method for the density operator and quantum states for each momentum mode, we calculate the Schwinger pair-production rate at finite temperature, which is the pair-production rate from the vacuum times a thermal factor of the Bose-Einstein distribution.

Hawking Radiation as Quantum Tunneling in Rindler Coordinate

We substantiate the Hawking radiation as quantum tunneling of fields or particles crossing the horizon by using the Rindler coordinate. The thermal spectrum detected by an accelerated particle is interpreted as quantum tunneling in the Rindler spacetime. Representing the spacetime near the horizon locally as a Rindler spacetime, we find the emission rate by tunneling, which is expressed as a contour integral and gives the correct Boltzmann factor. We apply the method to non-extremal black holes such as a Schwarzschild black hole, a non-extremal Reissner-Nordström black hole, a charged Kerr black hole, de Sitter space, and a Schwarzschild-anti de Sitter black hole.

Quantum Entanglement and Teleportation in Higher Dimensional Black Hole Spacetimes

We study the properties of quantum entanglement and teleportation in the background of stationary and rotating curved space-times with extra dimensions. We show that a maximally entangled Bell state in an inertial frame becomes less entangled in curved space due to the well-known Hawking-Unruh effect. The degree of entanglement is found to be degraded with increasing the extra dimensions. For a finite black hole surface gravity, the observer may choose higher frequency mode to keep high level entanglement. The fidelity of quantum teleporation is also reduced because of the Hawking-Unruh effect. We discuss the fidelity as a function of extra dimensions, mode frequency, black hole mass and black hole angular momentum parameter for both bosonic and fermionic resources.

Schwinger Mechanism and Hawking Radiation as Quantum Tunneling

The common interpretation of the Hawking radiation as quantum tunneling has some ambiguity such as coordinate-dependence of tunneling rate and non-invariance of the action under canonical transformations. It is shown that the tunneling process of black holes can be successfully described by Rindler coordinates in analogy with the Schwinger mechanism for pair production. We study the tunneling process of a charged black hole and a BTZ black hole.

Ellipsoidal universe in the brane world

We study a scenario of the ellipsoidal universe in the brane world cosmology with a cosmological constant in the bulk . From the five-dimensional Einstein equations we derive the evolution equations for the eccentricity and the scale factor of the universe, which are coupled to each other. It is found that if the anisotropy of our universe is originated from a uniform magnetic field inside the brane, the eccentricity decays faster in the bulk in comparison with a four-dimensional ellipsoidal universe. We also investigate the ellipsoidal universe in the brane-induced gravity and find the evolution equation for the eccentricity which has a contribution determined by the four- and five-dimensional Newton's constants. The role of the eccentricity is discussed in explaining the quadrupole problem of the cosmic microwave background.

Ricci Flat Black Holes and Hawking-Page Phase Transition in Gauss-Bonnet Gravity and Dilaton Gravity

It is well-known that there exists a Hawking-Page phase transition between a spherical AdS black hole and a thermal AdS space. The phase transition does not happen between a Ricci flat AdS black hole whose horizon is a Ricci flat space and a thermal AdS space in the Poincare coordinates. However, the Hawking-Page phase transition occurs between a Ricci flat AdS black hole and an AdS soliton if at least one of horizon coordinates for the Ricci flat black hole is compact. We show a similar phase transition betwen the Ricci flat black holes and deformed AdS solitons in the Gauss-Bonnet gravity and the dilaton gravity with a Liouville-type potential including the gauged supergravity coming from the spherical reduction of Dp-branes in type II supergravity. In contrast to Einstein gravity, we find that the high temperature phase can be dominated either by black holes or deformed AdS solitons depending on parameters.

Improved Approximations for Fermion Pair Production in Inhomogeneous Electric Fields

Reformulating the instantons in a complex plane for tunneling or transmitting states, we calculate the pair-production rate of charged fermions in a spatially localized electric field, illustrated by the Sauter electric field E_0 sech^2 (z/L), and in a temporally localized electric field such as E_0 sech^2 (t/T). The integration of the quadratic part of WKB instanton actions over the frequency and transverse momentum leads to the pair-production rate obtained by the worldline instanton method, including the prefactor, of Phys. Rev. D72, 105004 (2005) and D73, 065028 (2006). It is further shown that the WKB instanton action plus the next-to-leading order contribution in spinor QED equals the WKB instanton action in scalar QED, thus justifying why the WKB instanton in scalar QED can work for the pair production of fermions. Finally we obtain the pair-production rate in a spatially localized electric field together with a constant magnetic field in the same direction.

Elliptic Flow, Kasner Universe and Holographic Dual of RHIC Fireball

We consider a holographic dual of hydrodynamics of N=4 SYM plasma that undergoes non-isotropic three-dimensional expansion relevant to RHIC fireball. Our model is a natural extension of the Bjorken's one-dimensional expansion, and it describes an elliptic flow whose v2 and eccentricity are given in terms of anisotropy parameters. Holographic renormalization shows that absence of conformal anomaly in the SYM theory constrains our local rest frame to be a Kasner spacetime. We show that the Kasner spcetime provides a simple description of the anisotropically expanding fluid within a well-controled approximation. We also find that the dual geometry determines some of the hydrodynamic quantities in terms of the initial condition and the fundamental constants.

Quantum Fluctuations in the Inflationary Universe

The recent three-year WMAP data selects large-field models with certain power-law potentials and small-field models for all power-law potentials as consistent inflation models. We study the large-field and small-field inflation model with a quadratic and a quartic potential within the framework of quantum field theory in an expanding Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe. We find that quantum fluctuations in the small-field model lead to a significant contribution to the effective potential and may have non-negligible effects on the slow-roll parameters predicted by classical theory.

General Form of Magnetization Damping: Magnetization dynamics of a spin system evolving nonadiabatically and out of equilibrium

Using an effective Hamiltonian including the Zeeman and internal interactions, we describe the quantum theory of magnetization dynamics when the spin system evolves non-adiabatically and out of equilibrium. The Lewis-Riesenfeld dynamical invariant method is employed along with the Liouville-von Neumann equation for the density matrix. We derive a dynamical equation for magnetization defined with respect to the density operator with a general form of magnetization damping that involves the non-equilibrium contribution in addition to the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. Two special cases of the radiation-spin interaction and the spin-spin exchange interaction are considered. For the radiation-spin interaction, the damping term is shown to be of the Gilbert type, while in the spin-spin exchange interaction case the results depend on a coupled chain of correlation functions.

Schwinger Pair Production in Electric and Magnetic Fields

Charged particles in static electric and magnetic fields have Landau levels and tunneling states from the vacuum. Using the instanton method of Phys. Rev. D 65, 105002 (2002), we obtain the formulae for the pair-production rate in spinor and scalar QED, which sum over all Landau levels and recover exactly the well-known results. The pair-production rates are calculated for an electric field of finite extent, with a constant magnetic field also present, and are shown to have boundary effects.

Quasinormal modes of black holes and dissipative open systems

After explaining the physical origin of the quasinormal modes of perturbations in the background geometry of a black hole, I critically review the recent proposal for the quantization of the black-hole area based on the real part of quasinormal modes. As instantons due to the barriers of black-hole potentials lie at the root of a discrete set of complex quasinormal modes frequencies, it is likely that the physics of quasinormal modes can be learned from quantum theory. I propose a connection of a system of quasinormal modes of black holes with a dissipative open system, in particular, the Feshbach-Tikochinsky oscillator. This argument is supported in part by the fact that these two systems have the same group structure SU(1,1) and the same group representation of Hamiltonians; thereby, their quantum states exhibit the same behavior.

Method for Solving the Bloch Equation from the Connection with Time-Dependent Oscillator

We introduce a novel method to find exact density operators for a spin-1/2 particle in time-dependent magnetic fields by using the one-mode bosonic representation of $su(2)$ and the connection with a time-dependent oscillator. As illustrative examples, we apply the method to find the density operators for constant and/or oscillating magnetic fields, which turn out to be time-dependent in general.

Coherent-Squeezed State Representation of Travelling General Gaussian Wave Packets

Using the time-dependent annihilation and creation operators, the invariant operators, for a free mass and an oscillator, we find the coherent-squeezed state representation of a travelling general Gaussian wave packet with initial expectation values, $x_0$ and $p_0$, of the position and momentum and variances, $Δx_0$ and $Δp_0$. The initial general Gaussian wave packet takes, up to a normalization factor, the form $e^{i p_0 x/\hbar} e^{- (1 \mp i δ) (x - x_0)^2 / 4 (Δx_0)^2}$, where $δ= \sqrt{(2Δx_0 Δp_0/\hbar)^2 -1}$ denotes a measure of deviation from the minimum uncertainty or the initial position-momentum correlation $δ= 2Δ(xp)_0 / \hbar$. The travelling Gaussian wave packet takes, up to a time-dependent phase and normalization factor, the form $e^{i p_c x/\hbar} e^{- (1 - 2 i Δ(xp)_t/\hbar) (x - x_c)^2 / 4 (Δx_t)^2}$ and the centroid follows the the classical trajectory with $x_c(t)$ and $p_c(t)$. The position variance is found to have additionally a linearly time-dependent term proportional to $δ$ with both positive and negative signs.

New variational perturbation theory based on $q-$deformed oscillator

A new variational perturbation theory is developed based on the $q-$deformed oscillator. It is shown that the new variational perturbation method provides 200 or 10 times better accuracy for the ground state energy of anharmonic oscillator than the Gaussian and the improved Gaussian approximation, respectively.

Inflationary Solutions in Nonminimally Coupled Scalar Field Theory

We study analytically and numerically the inflationary solutions for various type scalar potentials in the nonminimally coupled scalar field theory. The Hamilton-Jacobi equation is used to deal with nonlinear evolutions of inhomogeneous spacetimes and the long-wavelength approximation is employed. The constraints that lead to a sufficient inflation are found for the nonminimal coupling constant and initial conditions of the scalar field for inflation potentials. In particular, we numerically find an inflationary solution in the new inflation model of a nonminimal scalar field.
