Non-Gaussian Effects on Domain Growth

The vacuum two-point function is calculated beyond the Gaussian approximation during the second order phase transition. It is found that the correlation function is dominated by the Gaussian term immediately after the phase transition but later is taken over by non-Gaussian terms as the spinodal instability continues. The non-Gaussian effects lead to larger size of domains and may imply a smaller density of topological defects than that predicted by the Hartree-Fock approximation.

Emergence of Classicality in Quantum Phase Transitions

We show that classicality emerges during quantum phase transitions due to parametric interactions without coupling to environments. The Wigner functions are explicitly calculated for the Gaussian vacuum, number, and thermal states of a free scalar field that describes the spinodal instability regime. The Wigner functions are sharply peaked around their classical trajectories during the phase transition and exhibit classical correlation only for unstable long wavelength modes but retain quantum coherence for short wavelength modes. Thus classicality emerges from the quantum evolution of phase transitions without a classical order parameter. We define a quantal ordering parameter that is linear in the field variable and satisfies the classical field equation.

Multiple-Scale Analysis and Renormalization of Quenched Second Order Phase Transitions

A quenched second order phase transition is modeled by an effective $Φ^4$-theory with a time-dependent Hamiltonian $\hat{H} (t)$, whose symmetry is broken spontaneously in time. The quantum field evolves out of equilibrium (nonequilibrium) during the phase transition as the density operator significantly deviates from $\hatρ (t) = e^{- β\hat{H} (t)}/Z_H$. The recently developed Liouville-von Neumann (LvN) method provides various quantum states for the phase transition in terms of a complex solution to the mean-field equation, which is equivalent to the Gaussian effective potential in the static case and to the time-dependent Hartree-Fock equation in the nonequilibrium case. Using the multiple scale perturbation theory (MSPT) we solve analytically the mean-field equation to the first order of coupling constant and find the quantum states during the quenched second order phase transition. We propose a renormalization scheme during the process of phase transition to regularize the divergences, which originate from the mode coupling between hard and hard modes or between the soft and hard modes. The effect of mode coupling is discussed.

Nonequilibrium Temperature for Open Boson and Fermion Systems

The effective theory of an open boson or fermion system is studied, which evolves out of equilibrium with time-dependent Hamiltonian $\hat{H}(t)$. A measure of nonequilibrium temperature for the open system evolving from an equilibrium is proposed as the time-averaged energy expectation value $T(t) = T_i(\bar{< \hat{H} (t) >_Ψ}/ \bar{< \hat{I} (t) >_Ψ})$, where $\hat{I} (t)$, the action operator, satisfies the quantum Liouville-von Neumann equation and determines the true density operator. It recovers the result for the adiabatic (quasi-equilibrium) and nonadiabatic (out of equilibrium) evolution from one static Hamiltonian to another and takes into account the particle production due to the intermediate processes.

Classical and Quantum Action-Phase Variables for Time-Dependent Oscillators

For a time-dependent classical quadratic oscillator we introduce pairs of real and complex invariants that are linear in position and momentum. Each pair of invariants realize explicitly a canonical transformation from the phase space to the invariant space, in which the action-phase variables are defined. We find the action operator for the time-dependent oscillator via the classical-quantum correspondence. Candidate phase operators conjugate to the action operator are discussed, but no satisfactory ones are found.

Nonequilibrium Quantum Dynamics of Second Order Phase Transitions

We use the so-called Liouville-von Neumann (LvN) approach to study the nonequilibrium quantum dynamics of time-dependent second order phase transitions. The LvN approach is a canonical method that unifies the functional Schrödinger equation for the quantum evolution of pure states and the LvN equation for the quantum description of mixed states of either equilibrium or nonequilibrium. As nonequilibrium quantum mechanical systems we study a time-dependent harmonic and an anharmonic oscillator and find the exact Fock space and density operator for the harmonic oscillator and the nonperturbative Gaussian Fock space and density operator for the anharmonic oscillator. The density matrix and the coherent, thermal and coherent-thermal states are found in terms of their classical solutions, for which the effective Hamiltonians and equations of motion are derived. The LvN approach is further extended to quantum fields undergoing time-dependent second order phase transitions. We study an exactly solvable model with a finite smooth quench and find the two-point correlation functions. Due to the spinodal instability of long wavelength modes the two-point correlation functions lead to the $t^{1/4}$-scaling relation during the quench and the Cahn-Allen scaling relation $t^{1/2}$ after the completion of quench. Further, after the finite quench the domain formation shows a time-lag behavior at the cubic power of quench period. Finally we study the time-dependent phase transition of a self-interacting scalar field.

Classical and Quantum Surgery of Geometries in an Open Inflationary Universe

We study classically and quantum mechanically the Euclidean geometries compatible with an open inflationary universe of a Lorentzian geometry. The Lorentzian geometry of the open universe with an ordinary matter state matches either an open or a closed Euclidean geometry at the cosmological singularity. With an exotic matter state it matches only the open Euclidean geometry and describes a genuine instanton regular at the boundary of a finite radius. The wave functions are found that describe the quantum creation of the open inflationary universe.

Canonical Quantization of a Closed Euclidean Universe with a Cosmological Constant

We study canonical quantization of a closed Euclidean universe with a cosmological constant and a massless scalar field. The closed Euclidean universe with an ordinary matter state can be matched at a finite radius only with the closed Lorentzian universe with the Wick-rotated exotic state. The exotic state provides the Lorentzian universe with a potential barrier extending from the cosmological singularity to the classical turning point and corresponding to the Euclidean geometry through the Wick-rotation, and avoid the singularity problem at the matching boundary. We find analytically the approximate wave functions for quantum creation of the Universe from the {\it nothingness}. We prescribe the Hartle-Hawking's no-boundary wave function, Linde's wave function and Vilenkin's tunneling wave function. In particular, we find the wave function for the Euclidean geometry, whose semiclassical solution is regular at the matching boundary with the Lorentzian geometry but singular at the cosmological singularity.

Black Hole Decay and Quantum Instantons

We study the analytic structure of the S-matrix which is obtained from the reduced Wheeler-DeWitt wave function describing spherically symmetric gravitational collapse of massless scalar fields. The complex simple poles in the S-matrix lead to the wave functions that satisfy the same boundary condition as quasi-normal modes of a black hole, and correspond to the bounded states of the Euclidean Wheeler-DeWitt equation. These wave function are interpreted as quantum instantons.

Nonequilibrium Quantum Evolution of Open Systems

We apply the Liouville-von Neumann (LvN) approach to open systems to describe the nonequilibrium quantum evolution. The Liouville-von Neumann approach is a unified method that can be applied to both time-independent (closed) and time-dependent (open) systems and to both equilibrium and nonequilibrium systems. We study the nonequilibrium quantum evolution of oscillator models for open boson and fermion systems

Entropy Production and Thermodynamic Arrow of Time in a Recollapsing Universe

We investigate the thermodynamic arrow of time in a time-symmetrically recollapsing universe by calculating quantum mechanically the entropy production of a massive scalar field. It is found that even though the Hamiltonian has a time-reversal symmetry with respect to the maximum expansion of the universe, the entropy production is generic and the total entropy of the scalar field increases monotonically. We conclude that the thermodynamic arrow of time is a universal phenomenon even in the expanding and subsequently recollapsing universe due to the parametric interaction of matter field with gravity.

Semiclassical Limit and Time in Quantum Cosmology

We propose a method to recover the time variable and the classical evolution of the Universe from the minisuperspace wave function of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. Defining a Hamilton-Jacobi characteristic function $W$ as the imaginary part of the $\ln Ψ$ we can recover the classical solution, and quantum corrections. The key idea is to let the energy of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation vanish only after the semiclassical limit is taken.

Wave Functions for Quantum Black Hole Formation in Scalar Field Collapse

We study quantum mechanically the self-similar black hole formation by collapsing scalar field and find the wave functions that give the correct semiclassical limit. In contrast to classical theory, the wave functions for the black hole formation even in the supercritical case have not only incoming flux but also outgoing flux. From this result we compute the rate for the black hole formation. In the subcritical case our result agrees with the semiclassical tunneling rate. Furthermore, we show how to recover the classical evolution of black hole formation from the wave function by defining the Hamilton-Jacobi characteristic function as $W = \hbar {\rm Im} \ln ψ$. We find that the quantum corrected apparent horizon deviates from the classical value only slightly without any qualitative change even in the critical case.

Quantum Field Theory in a Topology Changing Universe

We propose a method to construct quantum theory of matter fields in a topology changing universe. Analytic continuation of the semiclassical gravity of a Lorentzian geometry leads to a non-unitary Schrödinger equation in a Euclidean region of spacetime, which does not have a direct interpretation of quantum theory of the Minkowski spacetime. In this Euclidean region we quantize the Euclidean geometry, derive the time-dependent Schrödinger equation and find the quantum states using the Liouville-Neumann method. The Wick rotation of these quantum states provides the correct Hilbert space of matter field in the Euclidean region of the Lorentzian geometry. It is found that the direct quantization of a scalar field in the Lorentzian geometry involves an unusual commutation rule in the Euclidean region. Finally we discuss the interpretation of the periodic solution of the semiclassical gravity equation in the Euclidean geometry as a finite temperature solution for the gravity-matter system in the Lorentzian geometry.

Perturbation Method beyond the Variational Gaussian Approximation: The Liouville-Neumann Approach

We have developed a variational perturbation theory based on the Liouville-Neumann equation, which enables one to systematically compute the perturbative correction terms to the variationally determined wave functions of the time-dependent systems. We then apply the method to the time-independent anharmonic oscillator, and show that the results agree with those of other variational perturbation theories. We also show that the system has an interesting algebraic structure at the first order correction level.

One-Parameter Gaussian State of Anharmonic Oscillator: Nonlinear Realization of Bogoliubov Transformation

We find a one-parameter Gaussian state for an anharmonic oscillator with quadratic and quartic terms, which depends on the energy expectation value. For the weak coupling constant, the Gaussian state is a squeezed state of the vacuum state. However, for the strong coupling constant, the Gaussian state represents a different kind of condensation of bosonic particles through a nonlinear Bogoliubov transformation of the vacuum state.

Renormalization of Black Hole Entropy

We review the renormalization of one-loop effective action for gravity coupled to a scalar field and that of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of a black hole plus the statistical entropy of the scalar field. It is found that the total entropy of the black hole's geometric entropy and the statistical entropy yields the renormalized Bekenstein-Hawking area-law of black hole entropy only for even dimensional Reissner-Nördstrom (Schwarzschild) black holes. We discuss the problem of the microscopic origin of black hole entropy in connection with the renormalization of black hole entropy.

One-Parameter Squeezed Gaussian States of Time-Dependent Harmonic Oscillator and Selection Rule for Vacuum States

By using the invariant method we find one-parameter squeezed Gaussian states for both time-independent and time-dependent oscillators. The squeezing parameter is expressed in terms of energy expectation value for time-independent case and represents the degree of mixing positive and negative frequency solutions for time-dependent case. A {\it minimum uncertainty proposal} is advanced to select uniquely vacuum states at each moment of time. We show that the Gaussian states with minimum uncertainty coincide with the true vacuum state for time-independent oscillator and the Bunch-Davies vacuum for a massive scalar field in a de Sitter spacetime.
