Spin squeezing and maximal-squeezing time

Spin squeezing of a nonlinear interaction model with Josephson-like coupling is studied to obtain time scale of maximal squeezing. Based upon two exactly solvable cases for two and three particles, we find that the maximal-squeezing time depends on the level spacing between the ground state and its next neighbor eigenstate.

Universal output directionality of ultrahigh-Q single modes in a deformed microcavity with low index of refraction

Experimental investigation of the characteristics of quasi-bound states of a quadrupole deformed microcavity has revealed five distinct mode groups in cavity emission spectra with cavity quality factors different by orders of magnitude and consistently with much different intracavity mode distributions but with almost universal far-field emission patterns. These universal directionality of high Q modes are explained by a subtle manifestation of unstable manifolds of classical chaos in the formation of quasi-bound states.

Chaos-assisted nonresonant optical pumping of quadrupole-deformed microlasers

Efficient nonresonant optical pumping of a high-Q scar mode in a two-dimensional quadrupole-deformed microlaser has been demonstrated based on ray and wave chaos. Three-fold enhancement in the lasing power was achieved at a properly chosen pumping angle. The experimental result is consistent with ray tracing and wave overlap integral calculations.

Regular Spectra and Universal Directionality of Emitted Radiation from a Quadrupolar Deformed Microcavity

We have investigated quasi-eigenmodes of a quadrupolar deformed microcavity by extensive numerical calculations. The spectral structure is found to be quite regular, which can be explained on the basis of the fact that the microcavity is an open system. The far-field emission directions of the modes show unexpected similarity irrespective of their distinct shapes in phase space. This universal directionality is ascribed to the influence from the geometry of the unstable manifolds in the corresponding ray dynamics.

Decoherence Driven Quantum Transport

We propose a new mechanism to generate a dc current of particles at zero bias based on a noble interplay between coherence and decoherence. We show that a dc current arises if the transport process in one direction is maintained coherent while the process in the opposite direction is incoherent. We provide possible implementations of the idea using an atomic Michelson and an atomic Aharonov-Bohm interferometer.

Decoherence from Internal Dynamics in Macroscopic Matter-Wave Interferometry

Usually, decoherence is generated from the coupling with an outer environment. However, a macroscopic object generically possesses its own environment in itself, namely the complicated dynamics of internal degrees of freedom. We address a question: when and how the internal dynamics decohere interference of the center of mass motion of a macroscopic object. We will also show that weak localization of a macroscopic object in disordered potentials can be destroyed by such decoherence.

Floquet Formalism of Quantum Pumps

We review Floquet formalism of quantum electron pumps. In the Floquet formalism the quantum pump is regarded as a time dependent scattering system, which allows us to go beyond the adiabatic limit. It can be shown that the well-known adiabatic formula given by Brouwer can be derived from the adiabatic limit of Floquet formalism. We compare various physical properties of the quantum pump both in the adiabatic and in the non-adiabatic regime using the Floquet theory.

Magnetic field inversion symmetry in quantum pumps with discrete symmetries

We investigate the magnetic field inversion symmetry of the pumped currents in quantum pumps with various discrete symmetries using Floquet scattering matrix approach. We found the pumped currents can have symmetries $I(B,ϕ) = -I(-B,-ϕ)$ and $I(B,ϕ) = I(-B,-ϕ)$, where $ϕ$ is the phase difference of two time dependent perturbations, depending on the discrete symmetry considered. The results in the adiabatic limit for each discrete symmetry are compared with those of Brouwer's formula.

Pauli blocking factors in quantum pumps

We investigate the Pauli blocking factor in quantum pumps using Floquet formalism. Even though the time dependent potentials in quantum pumping can not only cause inelastic scatterings but also break the micro-reversibility, i.e. $T^+(E',E) \neq T^-(E,E')$, the Pauli blocking factor is unnecessary when the scattering process through the scatterer is coherent. The well defined scattering states extending from one reservoir to the others form a complete non-orthogonal set. Regardless of the non-orthogonality one can obtain the pumped currents using the field operator formalism. The current expression finally obtained do not contain Pauli blocking factor.

Quasibound states at thresholds in multichannel impurity scattering

We investigate the threshold behavior of transmission resonances and quasibound states in the multichannel scattering problems of a one dimensional (1D) time-dependent impurity potential, and the related problem of a single impurity in a quasi 1D wire. It was claimed before in the literature that a quasibound state disappears when a transmission zero collides with the subband boundary. However, the transmission line shape, the Friedel sum rule, and the delay time show that the quasibound states still survive and affect the physical quantities. We discuss the relation between threshold behavior of transmission resonances, and quasibound states and their boundary conditions in the general context of multichannel scatterings.

Floquet scattering in parametric electron pumps

A Floquet scattering approach to parametric electron pumps is presented and compared with Brouwer's adiabatic scattering approach [Phys. Rev. B 58, R10135 (1998)] for a simple scattering model with two harmonically oscillating delta-function barriers. For small strength of oscillating potentials these two approaches give exactly equivalent results while for large strength, these clearly deviate from each other. The validity of the adiabatic theory is also discussed by using the Wigner delay time obtained from the Floquet scattering matrix.

Internal localized eigenmodes on spin discrete breathers in antiferromagnetic chains with on-site easy axis anisotropy

We investigate internal localized eigenmodes of the linearized equation around spin discrete breathers in 1D antiferromagnets with on-site easy axis anisotropy. The threshold of occurrence of the internal localized eigenmodes has a typical structure in parameter space depending on the frequency of the spin discrete breather. We also performed molecular dynamics simulation in order to show the validity of our linear analysis.

Decoherence-induced wave packet splitting

We provide an intuitive interpretation of the optical Stern-Gerlach effect (OSGE) in the dressed-state point of view. We also analyze the effect of atomic damping in an experiment on the OSGE. We show that the atomic damping also causes the wave packet splitting, in a non-mechanical fashion, as opposed to the coherent process that is mechanical.

An ultrahigh-Q microsphere laser based on the evanescent-wave-coupled gain

We have demonstrated an ultrahigh-Q whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microsphere laser based on the evanescent-wave-coupled gain. Dye molecules outside the sphere near the equator were excited, resulting in WGM lasing in the lowest radial mode order. The loaded quality factor of the lasing WGM was 8(2)\times 10^9, the highest ever achieved in the microlaser.

Observation of Scarred Modes in Asymmetrically Deformed Microcylinder Lasers

We report observation of lasing in the scarred modes in an asymmetrically deformed microcavity made of liquid jet. The observed scarred modes correspond to morphology-dependent resonance of radial mode order 3 with their Q values in the range of 10^6. Emission directionality is also observed, corresponding to a hexagonal unstable periodic orbit.

Squeezing enhancement by damping in a driven atom-cavity system

In a driven atom-cavity coupled system in which the two-level atom is driven by a classical field, the cavity mode which should be in a coherent state in the absence of its reservoir, can be squeezed by coupling to its reservoir. The squeezing effect is enhanced as the damping rate of the cavity is increased to some extent.

Quantum Zeno Effect in Quantum Chaotic Systems

We analyzed the effect of frequent measurements on the quantum systems that are chaotic in the classical limit. It is shown that the kicked rotator, a well-known example of quantum chaos, is too special to be used as a testing ground for the effects of the repeated measurements. The abrupt change of state vectors by the delta-kick singular interruptions causes a quantum anti-Zeno effect. However, in more realistic systems with interaction potentials of continuous time dependence the quantum Zeno effect prevails.
