Effect of Randomness on Quantum Data Buses of Heisenberg Spin Chains

A strongly coupled spin chain can mediate long-distance effective couplings or entanglement between remote qubits, and can be used as a quantum data bus. We study how the fidelity of a spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain as a spin bus is affected by static random exchange couplings and magnetic fields. We find that, while non-uniform exchange couplings preserve the isotropy of the qubit effective couplings, they cause the energy levels, the eigenstates, and the magnitude of the couplings to vary locally. On the other hand, random local magnetic fields lead to an avoided level crossing for the bus ground state manifold, and cause the effective qubit couplings to be anisotropic. Interestingly, the total magnetic moment of the ground state of an odd-size bus may not be parallel to the average magnetic field. Its alignment depends on both the direction of the average field and the field distribution, in contrast with the ground state of a single spin which always aligns with the applied magnetic field to minimize the Zeeman energy. Lastly, we calculate sensitivities of the spin bus to such local variations, which are potentially useful for evaluating decoherence when dynamical fluctuations in the exchange coupling or magnetic field are considered.

Resonant Adiabatic Passage with Three Qubits

We investigate the non-adiabatic implementation of an adiabatic quantum teleportation protocol, finding that perfect fidelity can be achieved through resonance. We clarify the physical mechanisms of teleportation, for three qubits, by mapping their dynamics onto two parallel and mutually-coherent adiabatic passage channels. By transforming into the adiabatic frame, we explain the resonance by analogy with the magnetic resonance of a spin-1/2 particle. Our results establish a fast and robust method for transferring quantum states, and suggest an alternative route toward high precision quantum gates.

Controllable anisotropic exchange coupling between spin qubits in quantum dots

The exchange coupling between quantum dot spin qubits is isotropic, which restricts the types of quantum gates that can be formed. Here, we propose a method for controlling anisotropic interactions between spins arranged in a bus geometry. The symmetry is broken by an external magnetic field, resulting in XXZ-type interactions that can efficiently generate Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states or universal gate sets for exchange-only quantum computing. Analysis of the bus ground state provides a link between quantum critical phenomena and the communication capacity.

Heisenberg Spin Bus as a Robust Transmission Line for Perfect State Transfer

We study the protocol known as quantum state transfer for a strongly coupled antiferromagnetic spin chain or ring (acting as a spin bus), with weakly coupled external qubits. By treating the weak coupling as a perturbation, we find that perfect state transfer (PST) is possible when second order terms are included in the expansion. We also show that PST is robust against variations in the couplings along the spin bus and between the bus and the qubits. As evidence of the quantum interference which mediates PST, we show that the optimal time for PST can be smaller with larger qubit separations, for an even-size chain or ring.

Even-Odd Effects of Heisenberg Chains on Long-range Interaction and Entanglement

A strongly coupled Heisenberg chain provides an important channel for quantum communication through its many-body ground state. Yet, the nature of the effective interactions and the ability to mediate long-range entanglement differs significantly for chains of opposite parity. Here, we contrast the characters of even and odd-size chains when they are coupled to external qubits. Additional parity effects emerge in both cases, depending on the positions of the attached qubits. Some striking results include (i) the emergence of maximal entanglement and (ii) Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interactions for qubits attached to an even chain, and (iii) the ability of chains of either parity to mediate qubit entanglement that is undiminished by distance.

Entanglement and Quantum Phase Transitions via Adiabatic Quantum Computation

For a finite XY chain and a finite two-dimensional Ising lattice, it is shown that the paramagnetic ground state is adiabatically transformed to the GHZ state in the ferromagnetic phase by slowly turning on the magnetic field. The fidelity between the GHZ state and an adiabatically evolved state shows a feature of the quantum phase transition.

Entanglement, Berry Phases, and Level Crossings for the Atomic Breit-Rabi Hamiltonian

The relation between level crossings, entanglement, and Berry phases is investigated for the Breit-Rabi Hamiltonian of hydrogen and sodium atoms, describing a hyperfine interaction of electron and nuclear spins in a magnetic field. It is shown that the entanglement between nuclear and electron spins is maximum at avoided crossings. An entangled state encircling avoided crossings acquires a marginal Berry phase of a subsystem like an instantaneous eigenstate moving around real crossings accumulates a Berry phase. Especially, the nodal points of a marginal Berry phase correspond to the avoided crossing points.

Quantum phase transitions, entanglement, and geometric phases of two qubits

The relation between quantum phase transitions, entanglement, and geometric phases is investigated with a system of two qubits with XY type interaction. A seam of level crossings of the system is a circle in parameter space of the anisotropic coupling and the transverse magnetic field, which is identical to the disorder line of an one-dimensional XY model. The entanglement of the ground state changes abruptly as the parameters vary across the circle except specific points crossing to the straight line of the zero magnetic field. At those points the entanglement does not change but the ground state changes suddenly. This is an counter example that the entanglement is not alway a good indicator to quantum phase transitions. The rotation of the circle about an axis of the parameter space produces the magnetic monopole sphere like a conducting sphere of electrical charges. The ground state evolving adiabatically outside the sphere acquires a geometric phase, whereas the ground state traveling inside the sphere gets no geometric phase. The system also has the Renner-Teller intersection which gives no geometric phases.

Quantum Computational Method of Finding the Ground State Energy and Expectation Values

We propose a new quantum computational way of obtaining a ground-state energy and expectation values of observables of interacting Hamiltonians. It is based on the combination of the adiabatic quantum evolution to project a ground state of a non-interacting Hamiltonian onto a ground state of an interacting Hamiltonian and the phase estimation algorithm to retrieve the ground-state energy. The expectation value of an observable for the ground state is obtained with the help of Hellmann-Feynman theorem. As an illustration of our method, we consider a displaced harmonic oscillator, a quartic anharmonic oscillator, and a potential scattering model. The results obtained by this method are in good agreement with the known results.

Quantum Separability of Thermal Spin One Boson Systems

Using the temperature Green's function approach we investigate entanglement between two non-interacting spin 1 bosons in thermal equilibrium. We show that, contrary to the fermion case, the entanglement is absent in the spin density matrix. Separability is demonstrated using the Peres-Horodecki criterion for massless particles such as photons in black body radiation. For massive particles, we show that the density matrix can be decomposed with separable states.

Entanglement between qubits induced by a common environment with a gap

We study a system of two qubits interacting with a common environment, described by a two-spin boson model. We demonstrate two competing roles of the environment: inducing entanglement between the two qubits and making them decoherent. For the environment of a single harmonic oscillator, if its frequency is commensurate with the induced two-qubit coupling strength, the two qubits could be maximally entangled and the environment could be separable. In the case of the environment of a bosonic bath, the gap of its spectral density function is essential to generate entanglement between two qubits at equilibrium and for it to be used as a quantum data bus.

Entanglement of an impurity and conduction spins in the Kondo model

Based on Yosida's ground state of the single-impurity Kondo Hamiltonian, we study three kinds of entanglement between an impurity and conduction electron spins. First, it is shown that the impurity spin is maximally entangled with all the conduction electrons. Second, a two-spin density matrix of the impurity spin and one conduction electron spin is given by a Werner state. We find that the impurity spin is not entangled with one conduction electron spin even within the Kondo screening length $ξ_K$, although there is the spin-spin correlation between them. Third, we show the density matrix of two conduction electron spins is nearly same to that of a free electron gas. The single impurity does not change the entanglement structure of the conduction electrons in contrast to the dramatic change in electrical resistance.

Entanglement of electron spins in superconductors

We investigate entanglement of two electron spins forming Cooper pairs in an s-wave superconductor. The two-electron space-spin density matrix is obtained from the BCS ground state using a two-particle Green's function. It is demonstrated that a two spin state is not given by a spin singlet state but by a Werner state. It is found that the entanglement length, within which two spins are entangled, is not the order of the coherence length but the order of the Fermi wave length.

Entanglement of electron spins of non-interacting electron gases

We study entanglement of electron spins in many-body systems based on the Green's function approach. As an application we obtain the two-particle density matrix of a non-interacting electron gas and identify its two-spin density matrix as a Werner state. We calculate entanglement measures, a classical correlation, mutual information, and a pair distribution function of two electrons at zero and finite temperatures. We find that changes of entanglement measures are proportional to $T^2$ at low temperatures.

Quantum teleportation via a W state

We investigate two schemes of the quantum teleportation with a $W$ state, which belongs to a different class from a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger class. In the first scheme, the $W$ state is shared by three parties one of whom, called a sender, performs a Bell measurement. It is shown that quantum information of an unknown state is split between two parties and recovered with a certain probability. In the second scheme, a sender takes two particles of the $W$ state and performs positive operator valued measurements in two ways. For two schemes, we calculate the success probability and the average fidelity. We show that the average fidelity of the second scheme cannot exceed that of the first one.

Fidelity of Quantum Teleportation through Noisy Channels

We investigate quantum teleportation through noisy quantum channels by solving analytically and numerically a master equation in the Lindblad form. We calculate the fidelity as a function of decoherence rates and angles of a state to be teleported. It is found that the average fidelity and the range of states to be accurately teleported depend on types of noise acting on quantum channels. If the quantum channels is subject to isotropic noise, the average fidelity decays to 1/2, which is smaller than the best possible value 2/3 obtained only by the classical communication. On the other hand, if the noisy quantum channel is modeled by a single Lindblad operator, the average fidelity is always greater than 2/3.

Errors due to Finite Rise/fall Times of Pulses in Superconducting Charge Qubits

We study numerically the dynamics of two-qubit gates with superconducting charge qubits. The exact ratio of $E_J$ to $E_L$ and the corresponding operation time are calculated in order to implement two-qubit gates. We investigate the effect of finite rise/fall times of pulses in realization of two-qubit gates. It is found that the error in implementing two-qubit gates grows quadratically in rise/fall times of pulses.
